Back again with another retro handheld game console and this one is from Powkiddy. This one is suitable for emulating games up to the PS1 and considered to be Powkiddy's answer to the Anbernic RG351P/M as it runs the same chipset. Like other handhelds this has custom firmware support for ArkOS.

Featuring a 3.5" OCA 640x480 display, the usual buttons including dual joysticks and shoulder buttons, 2 USB-C ports for charging/OTG, 2 microSD card slots, 3.5mm audio jack, inbuilt speaker and a 3500mAh battery with over 5 hours of playtime

  • Dang this is an adorable case

    • Yeah, there's accompanying stickers of various animal faces you can stick to the center where those 3 buttons look like eyes and a mouth.

I've been following these things for a while… it's quite amazing what they can emulate on such portable devices.

Of course, it's hard for me to consider getting one… the $40 PSP Street I got many years ago runs everything I want.

    • +1

      That face cannot be unseen!

  • Not good with PSP / N64. Is this across the board or because of the 1GB Ram on this unit?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXhX-Y7BwSs

    • +6

It's more because of the CPU used. PSP and N64 games are harder to emulate than 3D PS1 games. Something like the Anbernic RG353V has a better chipset and will handle them better.

  • Seems good, from where do you get all these games shown in in the video, like street fighter? Are they inbuilt?

    • +3

Google Miyoo Mini Tiny Best Set

      • +2

'Tiny Best Rom Set GO!' it's called now

  • What are your thoughts on this one:

    https://www.geekbuying.com/item/POWKIDDY-X45-Handheld-Game-C…

I like the form factor but I dont know how it compares to the OP

    • +3

It won't handle 3D PS1 games so it's more suitable for platforms like Gameboy, NES and Sega Genesis etc.

    • +1

That one is really old, and has quality issues.
      Look for their new devices.

The prices will be (significantly) higher. But honestly it's better to have only 1-2 great devices, rather than 3-4 mediocre or bad ones. It's also more environmentally friendly, as you're limiting eWaste.

Loving these retro handheld deals - just wanted to say thank you for introducing the scene to me

    • +1

Check out Retro Game Corps on Youtube if you're getting sucked down the rabbithole like I did (my collection of these devices is shameful)

      • What is your recommended device? This would be my first

        • Depends what systems you play most of. I think best all-rounder would be the Retroid Pocket 3+ (or Flip if you prefer clamshell, same internals), or the Anbernic RG405M if you play mostly 4:3 content. These devices can play up to Dreamcast, N64 and PSP well, with a handful of Gamecube with tinkering.

If you really want Gamecube and some PS2, Odin Lite is a decent choice. My current preference is the Steam Deck since it handles everything up to PS2 easily using EmuDeck which gets lots of support and frequent updates. But I still like more portable devices like the above for on-the-go gaming or when I don't feel like playing on a big heavy slab :)

If you want something super portable, the Miyoo Mini+ or Anbernic RG35XX are currently top picks

    • No worries… I take requests 😉

Admittedly it's becoming an addiction for me too.

  • Why 2 sc card slots? Can we use both to store the game roms?

    • +2

you can run single or double

having just the OS on first slot is handy for flashing since you don't have to worry about reloading games when formatting

  • Would ps vita better if we want to emulate things? Or dedicated one like this?

    • Vita is in another league

      • Even when comparing with high end anbernic? That one over aud 200.. 353v or something

Ok then will just wait for vita go down in price.

        • The higher end models are much better than the Vita for emulation. The 353v will play a wider range, including Saturn, Dreamcast and better N64 performance.

  • Sorry for the noob question, but do you have to buy games? or they come inbuild into the console?

    • Poster "thecloudking" above answered your question

  • have retroid pocket 3+ and the RG35xx from previous deal.
I think the next would be a flip SP style. Hopefully we get some deals on the upcoming devices.

  • +3

    I don't need it, I don't need it, I don't need it!

  • This or the Miyoo Mini Plus?

    • +1

if you're considering miyoo mini+, consider the RG35xx deal

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/771471

      • +2

Not sure if there's still supply issues with Miyoo Mini+ but I've been trying to decide which one of these things I should get for a while now. I still haven't decided because new products come on, rebrands happen, different form factors, varying pricing to make my head explode. Not to mention /r/EmulationOnAndroid is a thing.

It's getting to the point I might just get a Steam Deck, slap CoinOps and be done with life

Also for @8at8 maybe check this comparison out: https://retroabxy.com/anbernic-rg35xx-vs-miyoo-mini-plus/

I'd like to emulate up to Switch but thats proving difficult.

        • +2

Switch you'll want Steamdeck or ROG Ally

          • @impoze: Ahh yes, a new contender. Nice!

          • +1

@impoze: Linus of LTT has implied he plays Switch games on his Steamdeck.

I’d get a steamdeck if it was officially sold here, but for is asked for them grey market, it makes the ROG Ally more appealing. Haven’t decided what to get myself…

      • Thank you

    • +1

They are similar. MMP has Wifi, like the RGB20S. Personally I like my MMP.

      The RG3xx doesn’t have WiFi: https://www.reddit.com/r/SBCGaming/comments/10szxjh/rg35xx_o…

      • No wifi but not highly useful besides retro achievements

        • +1

Drag and drop games/save states with browser or ftp. OTA update. Multiplayer. And yes, retroachievements….

    • +1

Miyoo Mini Plus has better build quality. Also I just can’t get over this PK name

    • +1

I've got the Miyoo mini and the RG35xx, and much prefer the Miyoo mini fwiw.
      Haven't tried the RGB20S

    • MMP cos Onion. No contest.

      • +2

GarlicOS is pretty solid on the RG35xx

        • Garlic is more than decent, but Onion's retroarch customisation goes a lot deeper under the hood…

          • @Fullhalter: …which makes a difference, that's why I got negged

            • +1

@Fullhalter: I didn't neg, which consoles has better performance on Onion?

Black Seraph is pretty active on the development so hopefully he'll also bring across the same retroarch customisation

              • @impoze: I know. Thanks for the leg up. As you've said elsewhere it depends what console you got 35xx or miyoo, correspondingly garlic or onion. No versus here. Amazingly onion is only beta on mmp, but it is stable (almost final) on the mm.

He's doing an awesome job on catching up, I wouldn't worry… Rg35xx for $86 is a great bargain

  • +1

I use a recent-ish phone with a controller. Much better performance. This one can hardly keep up with those ancient games.

    • -2

      What phone and how please?
I have a iPhone XS Max lying around.
Will this work? If so any links?

      • More emulators are available on Android

  • This or Anbernic RG35xx??

    • I bought the RG35xx last deal, and can honestly say Miyoo Mini if you can.

    • Plenty of comparison videos, comes down to preference, price and availability

      • Yep, I prefer the RG35XX. It's bloody amazing!!

        • +1

They essentially both run the same emulators, and both have great CFW with GarlicOS and OnionOS

Been living the auto save states/resume on the RG35XX, makes it much more easier for casual gaming with kids

          • @impoze: RG35XX also has great visuals without having to play around like the Mini.

    • RG35xx.

otoh this has a smiley face and joysticks for ape escape… hmmm

  • This or the RGB10 Max 2?

  • looking for a mini arcade that is portable so i can play third strike single player anywhere around the house.

  • noob question, can you save progress in rom games e.g. zelda

    • +1

      Yes you can

    • +1

Yes, either using the normal game save or with emulator save states

  • Damn clickbait

I thought there was finally a handheld to play the old leisure suit larry
    3.5" floppy collection

    • This thing runs lsl thru dosbox
