    Jellyfin is free!

    • +7

Jellyfin is great. Switched over a while ago

    • +8

+1 for Jellyfin. I've been using it for nearly a year. Could never justify paying so much for Plex.

      • +5

I got Lifetime Pass for like $70 probably 5 or 10 years ago, it's been decent value for me, but I'm at the point where I'm migrating to JF.

Meanwhile Plex has just gotten worse and worse and worse.

        • +13

Just wondering how you feel plex has gotten worse? I’ve been using it pretty much since it came out and it’s at the best point it has ever been right now.

          • +1

@MrFunSocks: Some niche issues that may not be so niche but pretty much been known issues for a long time and no response/fix from Plex so affected users are understandably frustrated. Main issue I face is downloading onto a mobile device. Absolute garbage app.

          • @MrFunSocks: I am not a plex pass user, but have been using plex in my Shield for a while.

Sometime last year plex stopped playing True-HD contents, it did not pass it through to my receiver. Apparently it was a known issue with the latest update pushed to the plex client. Many suggested rolling back to an earlier version or going to the latest beta.
I rolled back to an earlier version, nothing got fixed, later I upgraded to the beta, & then my Atmos contents gets played in DD+, but in True-HD it plays audio, but no video.

I still don't know if it is officially fixed or not, but it is not working for me as it used to work earlier.
It gets embarrassing when you are trying to play some demo contents to guests and it fails miserably :P
Just sharing my experience with Plex. I am yet to try Jellyfin.

    • +6

      Seriously, 10000% better.

Plex was running like shit on the latest Sony TV, whereas Jellyfin runs like butter.

      • +11

        Seriously, not better at all.

Intro skipping not built in and the plug-in isn’t supported by most clients.

        Most clients are very beta-ish.

Not as good at matching media.

It might be good one day, but it’s not there yet.

        • +5

Yeah looks janky. Plex’s UI is too clean

          • @OzBerghainer: Not saying this will fix the jank, but you can get a much nicer interface by using the custom CSS option imo. Sus out this CSS Wizard who has put together a choose your own adventure for a layout here.

        • -5

Cant even stream your own content with plex if the web is down. Plex is bloatware and basic features behind a paywall.

          • +1

@noise36: You definitely can, the local LAN streaming isn't going via the internet. It's going straight from the Plex server to the client.

            • -3

@BeerCrisp: Actually you won't be able to from any Plex Client, only working solution is to use the https://IP:32400 address to get around the internet being down or have downloaded the media locally to your device

This is due to the way Plex handles DNS requests to resolve to an internal IP Address

              • +2

@blankie: You're dead wrong.. I had a week of internet outage and plex worked fine on my TV streaming from my NAS based Plex server

              • +1

@blankie: Agree with @Megahowler, I've had times where I've had no internet in the house and Plex runs perfectly locally. You might have your setup incorrect and it's not actually locally streaming / direct playing. Would be silly to go out to the internet then back in for something that is available locally on the network.

            • @BeerCrisp: Only if you open up by IP address, which means your kids can browse your home-made porn libraries.

          • +1

            @noise36:

            basic features behind a paywall

            Well, they’re a business, not a charity.

            • -1

@PainToad: Where's this attitude when you're pirating Nintendo games on your PC/Xbox, PainToad? 🤔🤔🤔

          • +1

            @noise36: wrong, wrong and…..wrong

      • Plex runs great on my 2 year old Sony TV. 0 issues.

My only issue with Plex is downloading content requires you to babysit the app too much.

I tried Jellyfin and it was harder to setup, the UI is way less intuitive so it was hard for my users, and it straight up didn't work on some clients that Plex did.

However, I have had PlexPass for around 6/7 years that I got for 70 bucks or so. Without PP, it isn't the same experience. But I have around 20 users that don't have PP, so in the end the value is great. Compared to the 3k I have spent on HDD alone and the circa 60 that indexers and servers cost each year, it is really very cheap for something that just works for most people.

    • +2

Cheers, never heard of it. Plex last updates have been giving me grief. I think it’s time to make the switch.

      • +2

You’ll be back. Trust me. I’ve “switched” twice in the last two years.

    • +6

      100% support Jellyfin :D

    • Plex is too actually, unless you want specific paid features none of which affect home streaming off your own server. I’ve been using it weekly over a decade and have spent exactly $0.

      • +2

Hardware transcoding is the killer for me.

        • +4

          Free with Jellyfin

    • Gonna sound dumb but I tried to set it up and I couldn’t even use the UI. It’s like there wasn’t a setup guide

    • And like so much open source software, you get what you pay for. Jellyfin is still worse than Plex at matching content, and its client apps are clunkier and available on less devices.

Oh, and Jellyfin has nothing on Plexamp.

  • +19

    Jellyfin $0 now that's a bargain.

    • +3

Depends, for instance, Jellyfin on Shield is just a client, you can't use Shield as a server.

      • -1

You couldn't sideload one of the Server versions?

        • +1

          There’s no android version.

  • +1

Purchase it via Türkiye, much cheaper.

    • That’s what I did. Worked out to be $11/year. Tried Jellyfin but didn’t really like it.

    • Do I just follow the same instructions as the turkey deal?

    • +2

Is there a way to do this again? I thought it was all patched up by matching the origin of the credit card?

EDIT: You can get lifetime through Turkey Google Play for ~$100AUD

      • +2

Could you share the steps for doing this? Seems like this is cheaper than any deal in recent times.

  • +1

Wait for 50% I think this happens around Black Friday.

  • +1

    Works out to $145aud.

  • +1

Reminder that it's possible to find people who will share their massive libraries with you

    • Interesting…any tips on where to start?

      • Unless it’s a friend or family member, they’re going to want payment for the service.

        It’s just asking for trouble.

      • +4

        Google “r/plexshares”

        That will get you started.

  • +3

    Jellyfin FTW

It's free and getting better all the time.

  • This bargain? Daaamn!

  • +6

Plex is great but this deal isn't exactly spectacular. Think I got 50% off when I bought my lifetime pass many years ago. Used to run the server on my PC, then on a Shield and now on a DS920+. Never had any real problems with it. Used to use Kodi but wanted something everyone could use of any technical ability and on any device and Plex fit the bill perfectly. Use it for a PVR of FTA shows too.

I'm sure Jellyfin is good too but Plex is more mature as a program and just works for me so no reason to change. Yet at least.

  • +2

Also agree, Plex a headache now and not reliable for me anymore…is Jellyfin available for MAC? EDIT** yes it is :)

  • +7

Lol I'm just about to post a deal to get lifetime for ~$50
    Few steps involved but worthwhile.

    • +1

I’m interested in this. Can you let me know how if you don’t end up posting? Cheers

    • +1

      Very interested in this!

    • +5

To all the people messaging, I will post tomorrow night once I've worked out a step by step.

      • +1

I just tried lots of ways, all failed. I'd be keen to know what your trying, even without the steps yet.

    • +1

      Please share the info mate

    • Pls share this. Thank you.

    • +1

If you could post steps that would be great. I think we're all eagerly waiting.

    • +4

I haven't posted yet due to the third party payment provider it relies on temporarily not accepting topup's. Can't post a deal that isn't obtainable. But here's a sneak peak of what to expect

The method should also future proof any other turkey geo hacks that may get patched by card issue location.

      • Not interested in Plex pass atm but following for the payment method. I'm currently using ininal but top up is a pain sometimes.

        • How did you sign up with ininal? I looked into basically all the Turkey providers and couldn't find a way to get around either needing to be in Turkey, having a Turkey ID, or have a Turkey mobile number.

          • @Castcore: I signed up using my Australian ID and mobile number without any issues. Just had to enter a fake Turkish address.

The only issue was topping up since I couldn’t top up with any of my Australian cards (including 28 degrees) so had to use EFT via Revolut which costs ~$2 each time.

            • @xers: How did you top up ininal with revolut? Cant get past the Bic/swift and address of recipient when I tried.

              • @vodamerc: For BIC/SWIFT, enter AKBKTRIS. Address you can get from their contact page which is: Kuştepe Mah. Mecidiyeköy Yolu Cad. Trump Towers Blok No:12 İç Kapı No:448 Şişli/İSTANBUL.

  • +7

Before people jump on board to get this. Last thing I heard is that Plex dev team is not pushing many updates anymore and left many unhappy people.
Then people tried to go to Emby which also went downhill. Let you guys decide whether it's worth it.

Jellyfin is opensource and free but transparent. I use this for my server, and it runs pretty good with Nvidia Shield or Chromecast.

    • Compared to Plex, Emby's been great for me on a Shield.Dumped Plex and never looked back.

    • Plex have switched from the "software is our product" to "our users are our product" model, meaning that if you search for a movie they'll recommend their ad-supported streaming services and partners to you and your users over your existing copy; and that has to be manually turned off on a per-device basis. Sometimes that means recommending advertising supported porn to your kids over the vetted library of films you'd rather they watch; tough luck, no refunds.

Also, if stuff breaks and it's not their streaming stuff they don't care. They broke search and took six months to fix it (you type in "termin" and hit enter because you want to see a Terminator movie, and it comes up with Alien films - because that was the thing you searched for yesterday, and overrules whatever you typed today).

Also, Linus Tech Tips fired them as a sponsor a couple of months back, because the process of downloading transcoded ("shrunk") movies from Plex to your phone/tablet is broken, and has been for a decade, and he's sick of it.

If you do want to use it maybe buy a three- or six- month licence, and then see where Emby or Jellyfin is up to.

    • Do you mean you have a Jellyfin server on Shield ?

  • Not bad, thanks!

  • +5

I'm on the other side of the argument as some people here: I've tried jellyfin and can't stand it. Every time I've looked at it it can't stand up to what plex offers me. Don't get me wrong, having competition is always a good thing, especially when it's free and open source, but for my use case plex wins 100% of the time.

My advise is to check both out and see what works best for you before jumping all in in either plex or jellyfin

      • -6

Only 16 fanboys. I thought there would be more.

  • Does jellyfin have a Samsung smart tv app?

    • I think there is a tizen app but you have to sideload it.

  • +2

Before people spending their money, only get this if you really need it, for average user who only use it in house doesn't needs it.
And this isn't the cheapest price either.

  • My experience is Jellyfin sucks for my 4k content (30GB+ movies). It wants to transcode virtually everything whereas Plex will play direct on most of my devices.

    • Funnily enough I had the opposite problem. I could config Jellyfin for direct play but could never force Plex to direct play on a few clients.

    • I've played 70-80gb 4k remuxes direct through Jellyfin, handled it like a champ.

      • Transcoding or direct play?

        • Direct play to a 2019 Shield Pro, using the Jellyfin Android TV app.

  • same. tried Jellyfin, it couldnt even match 40 seasons of survivor, it was just such a mess,
didnt fancy spending all Sunday fixing the matches.

plex has been rock solid for years now, never saw the point of getting this pass

  • Damnit just paid for 1 year a couple days ago!

    • I read so where else that if you email them you should get some sort of credit back.

  • How is Plex/Jellyfin different to KODI?

    • Try install it and find out?

    • I use Jellyfin as a backend for Kodi.

Jellyfin handles the library, syncs your watch status across kodi boxes , Kodi is the front end player, no transcoding in my setup.

    • +2

Kodi is only local files. Plex is a media server that your run in your home, and it shares out your media files over the network, including (if you want) the internet.

That means you can start watching a video on your living room TV, and then finish watching it in bed on a tablet; and Plex will remember where you're up to and start it off there.

If you pay for it it'll do hardware transcoding, and crunch down your 4k rips so you can watch them on your phone on the train of a morning. It'll also convert videos from formats your TV can't play to formats it can. Also, you can share out your movies/TV shows to friends and family.

That said Plex have changed their business model from selling software to selling users, and so I don't recommend a lifetime pass any more.

      • +1

        Kodi is only local files.

Not true, Kodi will happily play files you've stored centrally on your NAS/Server.

That means you can start watching a video on your living room TV, and then finish watching it in bed on a tablet; and Plex will remember where you're up to and start it off there.

Kodi can do exactly the same thing - shared library is simple to setup.

The only thing Plex really brings to the party is transcoding and playback over the internet - if you just want in-home use then Kodi is fine.

        • +1

I believe they’re talking about locally as in local to your network, not just that literal device.

  • +6

after WMC died, plex became the exclusive household solution for slinging music and video across rooms and onto mobile devices, and it includes FTA TV guide and PVR for when the need arises.

a few years ago i decided to support plex and bought lifetime pass.

i dont know all the ins and outs of jellyfin but plex just works - jellyfin may well be the champion in years to come but if you are using plex on a daily basis IMO you should support the devs if you can afford it.

truth be told - most plex users are not forking out for multiple streaming services…
