Dell WD22TB4 Thunderbolt 4 Dock $299.99 Delivered @ RonaRigs

280

All time low for this dock I believe. Seems like they are an authorised Dell Partner based on their past deals with 3 years warranty.

Good dock for those who purchased this recent 4K monitor deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/778785.

I've got an older Dell TB16 dock which can only output 4K@60Hz whilst this dock should be able to manage 4K@120Hz (dependent on how many extra monitors are plugged in and what resolution you run them at).

EDIT - Specs do not officially state support for 4K@120Hz but being a TB4 dock it should (I make no guarantees… I don't own this dock and it's just based on what I found researching):

Full-size Thunderbolt 4 Docks

Unless otherwise indicated, all docks include these base features:

  • Monitor output:
** Most brands do not list all compatible monitor modes so double-check with the manufacturer to ensure compatibility with your specific monitors. For example, the Goodway DBD1110 lists 4K120 but not 5K60 support, but some re-brands like the Brydge Stone list 5K60 but not 4K120. Both models actually support 4K120 and 5K60.
    ** most TB4 laptops support: 1x 8K30, 1x 5K60, 1x 4K120, 1x 1440p144, or 2x4K60

Just what I am looking for! In time for my tax deduction.

    Thanks OP!

  • Does anyone know how well these docks work with M1 Macbook pros?

    • Bought one like 6 mths ago for my m1 pro. Works great out of the box, but no dual display output(m1 limitation)

      • Hey could you please clarify what you mean with the 'no dual display' output. So I can't connect two display to the dock or do you mean via daisy chain? And did you buy the USB-C version or the Thunderbolt 4 one?

Do you know if that differs from the Cal-Digit TS4 which supposedly support multi display output even for MacOS. Thanks

        • I meant via the dock itself with the ports provided. It would just mirror your displays.

I have not idea how to do daisy chain as my monitors do not support those I believe.

Mine is the TB4 one bought for 360 ish.

Also does the Caldigit one use “display link”?

          • @OnlineShopper123: There are no Caldigit docks that use DisplayLink unfortunately… The Caldigit docks do support multiple displays for M1/M2 Pro/Max of course.

It's not the cleanest, but if you want 2+ external displays on non-pro M1/M2 apparently you could use any non-DisplayLink dock + USB-A to HDMI/DP DisplayLink enabled adapter.

However, prepare to be disappointed by DisplayLink… I get low refresh rate, compression artefacts, choppy/laggy mouse on a 13" M1 Macbook Pro.

        • There may be some clarity required.

I think onlineshopper123 meant "MacBook Pro with M1" when they said "M1 Pro," because they later say the single monitor is a "M1 limitation"

A MacBook Pro with M1 Pro should do multiple monitors, but through this dock, I don't know. Seems likely, but this is also the information I seek.

        • Any true Thunderbolt dock should support multiple extended displays from M1 and M2 Macs. The comments on the linked website suggest this is true. So yes, you can connect multiple extended desktops to any M1/M2 Mac with this hub.

          • @ayoole: Well Apple said M1/M2 will only support a single extended screen over a single Thunderbolt connection while the Pro variants will support two extended screens over a single Thunderbolt connections. Max can support up to four extended screens but over two Thunderbolt connections (presumably one connection on each side of the laptop, the two TB4 ports on each side are tied to the same controller).

The Thunderbolt 3/4 specification will only deliver two video streams in a single connection. The limitation is on the M1/M2 chip. While most Thunderbolt certified products must comply to the Intel TB standard, Apple obviously doesn't follow this (for M1/M2 chip).

You can get two displays from a M1/M2 MacBook but they will be mirrored. The best middle ground approach would be to go with USB graphics dock (such as DisplayLink) or even Hybrid dock (mix of Alt. Mode and DisplayLink). With a Hybrid dock, you could theoretically get up to 3 extended screens from a M1/M2 MacBook. DL used to suck due to the compression and additional software processing but their latest drivers now support hardware acceleration. In other words, you will find it hard to differentiate between all these technologies visually if you are doing productive tasks (e.g. Office applications).

M1 macs do not support dual display. at all.

      • +1

Yeah I got one for my M1 Pro, but I only use 1 ultrawide display. It handles 3840x1600@144hz fine though which is all I wanted.

Very happy with it, has everything I needed in a dock without a bunch of extras I don't (and the higher price that comes with that).

        • Can you use MBP and the ultrawide as a “second display?

    • Do you mean the regular Pro, or the Pro Pros?

I'm on an M1 Macbook Air, and it works fine - can't do two monitors though, just one external unless you have a DisplayLink adaptor.

The proper Pros work the same, though you can directly attach an external monitor through the Mac's HDMI port.

It works as a USB hub, network adaptor, etc…

    • i have m1 and use D6000 for 3 external displays via displaylink

    • Works fine - see here on how to connect monitors - https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-au/000124312/dell-thun…

I have been using one for a while with one monitor connected via HDMI and a second connected via USB-C to HDMI.

Also sold by the same mob at Amazon but still at higher price of $335. I am expecting them to drop the price soon given it's sold by the same mob.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Dell-WD22TB4-Thunderbolt-Dock-USB/…

Anyhoo, I've got one. Thanks OP once again.

  • You sure this can output 4k@120? Spec only have 4k@60

    • I'd like to know this too.

    • It wont be able to I’m pretty sure, Thunderbolt 4 max output is 4k60Hz

So it can do 4 monitors at 4k60Hz but no 4k120Hz Im pretty sure, need a KVM switch or something for that

    • +2

I found a comment on a previous deal where a user was able to output 4K@120Hz but they used the USB-C downstream port:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12710944/redir

The HDMI ports won't work since they are HDMI2.0. I'm not sure if the native DP ports will support it but based off that comment, if you use a DP to USB-C cable, it should work.

    • I think it's 60hz only at Single Screen 4K.

      https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-au/wd22tb4-dock/dell…

Doesn't matter for me as my XPS 2-in1 doesn't go any higher than 60hz but for others, it would be.

  • Can you connect 3 monitors to this dock to work with M1 Pro?
Instead of using 3 ports directly on the laptop, can you connect 3 monitors to this dock and connect dock to M1 Pro by using only 1 port on the laptop?

    • +2

Yes, via USB-C if you're unit is Thunderbolt enabled.

      3x 4K 60HZ Displays, 1x 8K Display

Would anyone have a recommendation for a dock that would be suitable and take maximum display advantage for both a Surface Pro 8 and an Xbox Series X (based on attaching both to the G3223Q monitor we all just bought ha ha)?

    • +2

I’ll let you know how this Dell WD22TB4 dock + G3223Q goes once it arrives lol

  • Can we get a moment to appreciate how good this store's name is

  • Is this a display link dock? Those absolutely suck but it's hard to tell as it's usually hidden in the specs… I can't see anything mentioning it

    • If its ThunderBolt 4 I dont think it should be DisplayLink? Think its not overlapping tech

    • it clearly says thunderbolt 4 in the title.

      • Right, didn't realise these were mutually exclusive

        • display link stuff goes out of its way to make it clear.

  • +1

For everyone's future reference. Caldigit is the only brand that explicitly lists support high refresh rates in their docks (that I could find). Unfortunately their TS4 dock is like $700.

You've also got to have display cable with the appropriate HDMI/DP version otherwise it won't work - the refresh rate will be listed as an option but when you select it there won't be any signal to the monitor.

  • If I had $300 to blow on something I'd be this, so I could compare my dell USB-C dock to a thunderbolt dock, since me Latitude has Thunderbolt, be interested to see the dif, so long as this dock can charge the laptop like the USB-C can, I live off-grid and not having to run a charger for the laptop and the dock is a must! (I checked … it does)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeOSbPbl_tA

    • so long as this dock can charge the laptop like the USB-C can

Yes - 130W for Dell systems and 90W for non-Dell systems

      • I did say that at the bottom as I checked the specs before publishing the comment!

  • +1

One major limitation when using Dell docks with non-Dell laptops that's not very well-publicised: Dell docks limit power delivery to 90W when connected to a non-Dell laptop.

As per the official specs on Dell's website for this dock:

    Power Provided
    130W (Dell systems)
    90W (non-Dell systems)

Depending on the power delivery requirements of the non-Dell laptop you're connecting this to, it may not even charge the battery if the factory AC adapter is a 150W model for example.

  • Thanks for the post. Got one! Hoping it will be better than many of the much cheaper USB hubs that I have bought, and seem to have constant problems with.

  • I have a WD19S and D6000 from work, tried both with M1 Pro Mac and both somewhat suck. Their internal fan noise goes high on both models and on WD19S model it generates a loud noise on audio port, at least on my speaker until dock is activated via Mac after which noise significantly reduces but it's still faintly there as far as I can tell. You have to install DisplayLink software on Mac to get it activated and I have noticed sometimes it doesn't get activated after Mac wakes from sleep. Highest refresh rate I was able to get was 100Hz on single display 3440x1440 ultra wide 34" (I have not tested with dual displays)

Personally I wouldn't get this Dell dock unless if I see some Youtube review where they say it works great.

Thanks for putting this up OP.

Thought I'd clarify a few of things:

1: We've had customers test running this dock at 144hz and confirmed it works. (Connected to a Alienware 38" AW3821DW)
2: Most we've seen connected to MacBook Pro (M2) is 2 monitors, due a limitation with the laptop, not the dock. M1 MBP's seem limited to 1 monitor.
3: Fan noise seems modest on the units we've personally tested and used but for customers that want a perfectly quiet room, don't go for this.
4: Warranty is 3 years (Dell AES) meaning if it goes wrong, they will replace it within the 3 year period for free. (Provided no intentional damage)

Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.

    Cheers,

    Jay from RonaRigs

        • Hi Jay,

I've got the delivery from Sendle yesterday thank you.

I couldn't find any tax invoice included so if you don't mind could I please ask for a copy of tax invoice from you?

If you have a PM, I'll give you my order number.

          Regards

          Zz

          • @burningrage: Great to hear it arrived.

            Just sent you a PM.

            Cheers

    • What would you recommend for a completely silent option?

      • Not sure yet, we've tested a bunch of docks without an internal fan however they are woefully underpowered and will not run multiple displays without issue.

We will do a bit more research and come back to you.

  • I could not imagine a dock with a fan.
Especially in Summer, it is not optimal.

  • Also, the RonaRig peeps are good peeps. I bought something similar from them earlier this year and received top notch service personally. Can vouch for both solid prices AND service.

    • Thanks for your kind words n0ob1

  • Thanks to everyone that ordered, we've just reached our allocation for this promotion and have to revert to normal pricing.
