    Beloved?

Not sure what you do with yours, but I’ve just been using mine for t’internets…

  • Does it charge the phone if connected through phone hotspot ?

    • Assume you mean via the 1 USB port. Doubt enough power would be there even if not tethered that way.

    • It's 5V/1.5A (7.5W) output apparently. Source: https://forum.gl-inet.com/t/slate-ax-axt1800-how-much-curren…

I don't know if that's enough for your purposes, I guess that would depend on your phone.

I'm guessing you're wondering if you can just do Power bank -> Router -> Phone, or something? (As the router is a type-c input for power)

    • I have a Slate. The earlier one. I USB tether my phone to the Slate, and it absolutely does charge the phone.

The power supply that came with my (earlier) Slate was rated at not being able to deliver much more power than the Slate itself used. 5V 1A if I remember correctly. It wouldn't have much power left over for the phone, and the two together could overload the power supply, or not leave enough power for the slate when it needed it. So I found another similar power supply rated at 5V 2A, and I used that.

I expect it would be the same for the Slate AX. It would definitely charge a phone USB tethered to it. But it wouldn't charge the phone as fast as a direct connection to a higher powered QC 3.0 or PD USB charger.

Thanks for sharing, I am looking for one that has sim card and 5g, any recommendations?

    • Same

    • Suggestion. There's something that'll do what you want. A 5G phone. It'll wifi hotspot. And if you want a wired connection you can get an ethernet adapter, and ethernet hotspot. And its a phone.

      • Telcos in countries like the US are pretty stringent when it comes to wifi hotspots. It's not always possible to do a wifi hotspot while travelling. The option simply disappears from your phone.

    • The one that GL.Inet have available is a tad on the larger side, and would be a backpack minimum to transport. (Although I might recommend a foam-lined case because of all those antennas)

I know Telstra have a bunch of different pocket wifi models that they have on contract and outright, probably look into those too.

Edit: Or you know, a 5G capable phone and a power bank

    • I haven't seen one. If you don't need OpenWrt/VPN/… then any portable dongle from the operators could do. 4G ones are like $10-20 on marketplace. 5G ones are more expensive, $300-500 new I think.

Been looking to get one of these “travel” routers but there are so many variants.

Anyone have any real world experience with both Slate Plus and this one? Is this one worth the extra?

  • The price went up to 186 with the 15% discount, do you think this will go down before the end of the financial year?
