      • Wow hahaha

      • That explains the quote to those of us who don't live in Sydney - thanks.

    legit question:

At this price (even with discount) how does this Anker rate/compare to the Zyron 66w one from here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/780398 ?
Both 3 port but one's significantly less & this one looks to stick out from wall/socket more?

genuinely curious cos i was going to buy another Zyron one from the EOFY deals.

    • +2

Anker is meant to be better in terms of quality/reliability but for the price i'd still go for Zyron cause the OZB rep is responsive and they seem to help get your replacement sent out if it fails within 15 months

    • +10

I'd go the other way and always buy a higher quality charger, budget allowing.

Anker design their own chargers and generally perform well in more technical reviews, IIRC. With some of the other brands sold they are just slapping their name on OEM products with varying degrees of quality between brands and batches.

      • Aftersales support is pretty great too. I had a replacement express posted immediately following an issue.

        • The Anker should be at least 100W at this price, Zyron they way to go for 65W at $34.99 or 2 for $66.48

          • @dandandan: Kind of comparing a Macbook to a Chromebook there, though I admit this is a bit overpriced even at this discount.

            • @0jay: Because Mac is overpriced too?

              • @Schniz2: Not sure I’ve ever paid full price for Apple gear except maybe iphone 4 when it came out

          • +1

@dandandan: The Noname brands can do it cheaper because they cut corners and also often can't actually meet the spec they are sold at.

            • +1

@Aureus: I see what you are saying, maybe a little bit different in the charging world. I see the GaN chips supplied to Anker by Navitas Semiconductor, are the same Gan chips in the Zyron powastone models at least. Not sure if they are in other Zyron models including the one linked here however Zyron's website say they work with leading technologies like GaNFast which is built around Navitas GaNFast Power ICs.

              • +1

@dandandan: There's a lot more to a charger than simply the chipset used - there's the design and quality of the other components to consider.

@ihfree: I 100% agree with you, it's the OzBargain conundrum though isn't it!

        • I had a bad experience. 3 yo USB C cable with lifetime warranty bought through Amazon. Anker AU said it was not their problem and yo go to Amazon. Who directed me to Anker.

Glad others have had better luck.

          • @y2k: Three years’s stretching it for a cable tbh

            • @0jay: Sure, then they shouldn't offer a lifetime warranty. Otherwise it's part of the sales pitch

              • @y2k: Yeh I agree but I’d argue a lifetime warranty for a cable’s pretty obviously a marketing pitch – an inherently difficult thing to take advantage of.

If you were drawing up conditions for a warranty like that the bulk of the document’d be made up of use cases that aren’t covered and that are difficult to prove (and therefore difficult to refute).

Anker is the one brand that I'd consider trusting to my thousand+ dollar laptop. I am not going to piss about with saving $15 for some low to non-existent QC unheard of brand to power my computer.

Then again, I get by totally fine with my OEM chargers anyway which I can also use to charge my phone really, really fast. So I use Lenovo chargers when travelling instead of trying to play clever with GaN third party chargers.

I run a standard Thinkpad, and the 65W charger powers it up plenty fine, and brings my phones to full charge faster than I need or want. I do not really get why people insist on 100W chargers- what are they doing, power multiple Macbooks off the same unit? If so… why? Is the tiny amount of space saving in luggage really worth it? Or is it just chasing specs, which seems to be the done thing these days regardless of whether those specs mean anything IRL.

        • I do not really get why people insist on 100W chargers

There probably more interested in the multiport aspect

          • @ihfree: The fast chargers charge devices so quick that I have not have to worry about multi port. This is for my phones and laptops, at least. I don't charge Switches.

            • @rumblytangara: Depends on your battery’s capacity (and potential charge-speed) as to whether or/and how much of a benefit you’ll see with a higher watt charger.

Not just about maxing out the charge-rate.

              • -1

@0jay: Well yes, clearly. As mentioned, one of the devices is a laptop (i.e. higher capacity than most other mobile devices).

                • @rumblytangara:

I do not really get why people insist on 100W chargers

People who have large capacity batteries (higher, apparently, than yours).

@0jay: Or perhaps considerably less patience.

                    • @rumblytangara:

Not just about maxing out the charge-rate.

                    • @rumblytangara: It's more about convenience - my favourite charger is the Satechi 165W.

The most common use case is a Phone + Steam Deck and maybe a laptop before bed. I've used it with 3 or 4 devices on many occasions.

                      • @ihfree: It's probably worth mentioning that keeping devices at full charge tends to be harder on battery life. It's worse than keeping the batteries in elevated temperatures. I just throw mine on for long enough to get 'mostly' or 'enough' charged, so I don't do overnight charges.

My laptop is configured to only charge up to around 50 or 60% if it's going to be plugged in long term.

                        • @rumblytangara: Yep, I know - it's unlikely to have a significant impact on my devices during my ownership.

The only laptop that is on a charger most of the time is my MBP on a TB dock. It charges to about 80%. There is also the option for Android phones, but I don't bother.

                        • @rumblytangara: Probly also worth mentioning that powerbanks and powerstations benefit both from rapid charge and from high enough wattage you’re not waiting days for a capacious powerstation to reach capacity.

I keep all my gear at between 40 and 80% as much as I can but if I’m topping up a powerbank I’ll default to a quick charge every time, even if my idea of a top up dips out at 80%

$109.12 delivered for 2 (with eBay plus), thanks!

  • That's actually not bad given this is the fancy one. Not bad at all.

  • Anyone knows why Anker doesn’t sell the 737 120w model in Australia?

    Regulation?

    • +3

I'm assuming that would require Anker to release another SKU with the AU Plug.

If you compare Anker US with Anker AU, we're missing the majority of their products (mostly products that required wall plug).

  • Still have conflicting info on whether leaving cable plugged in limits max charging wattage or not.

    • +1

This version apparently smartly adapts wattage.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12887663/redir

      • Yeh so this version is 'smarter'.

But there were people here saying previously that when only charging 1 device, but other ports had cables plugged in, but no device charging will still cause the previous version to think 2 devices are charging, hence limiting wattage.
Prob need one of those cable with a screen displaying wattage to confirm

I'm still waiting for Anker 747 to release in Australia…

    • Same. No >100W = no go for me.

    • Are you referring to the 150w gan prime or another? I've heard of an 87w model and I'm scratching my head trying to find it.

      • +1

Yea, it is 150w GAN Prime. It is out in the US but not yet released in Australia.
