FANATEC CSL DD Ready2Race Bundle for PC (5 NM) $639.90 + Delivery @ FANATEC

1290

Seems like a pretty good deal on an entry level direct drive wheel and pedal combo.

The blurb from Fanatec:

Dear sim racer,
We’ve done it again - another game-changing price point in sim racing! Full Direct Drive package for $639.90. Plus, you can save additional if you add the Boost Kit at the same time!

Direct Drive: the choice of pro racers worldwide. What’s the big deal?

Most entry-level racing wheels use small motors in combination with gears or belts to increase the torque on the steering shaft. Using the same technology as professional simulators, direct drive requires a more powerful motor, because the steering wheel is directly mounted to the motor shaft. This means there’s no belt or gear mechanism to dampen the force feedback effects.

FANATEC CSL DD Ready2Race Bundle for PC includes:

CSL Steering Wheel P1 V2
The steering wheel’s lightweight construction helps to retain fine force feedback detail even at low torque settings. Its 300 mm diameter is suitable for many vehicle types. It features a RevStripe and display, and metal paddle shifters.

CSL DD Wheel Base
The CSL DD raises the bar for performance at this price point. The powerful direct drive servo motor delivers linear, consistent performance (5 Nm torque), with the optional Boost Kit 180 (sold separately) unlocking the maximum strength (8 Nm torque).

CSL Pedals
Both the throttle and brake axes use precision Hall-effect sensors. The stability of the all-metal design means it is built to last. The stiffer spring on the brake pedal combined with the PU foam damper provides a realistic, progressive feeling. The pedals can be upgraded to a load cell brake for even higher performance.

This is another step towards our goal of bringing direct drive technology to a wider audience. Now is the perfect time to find out what you’ve been missing!

Kind regards,
Team Fanatec

I have paid less for whole cars

    Wow. Great deal!

Niche product they'll go underappreciated here.

  • +2

Paid $800 for this exact bundle a month ago :) thanks fanatec

    • +1

Ouch. Was advertised as a pre-order special, too. I assumed that the price would only go up from there.

    • Credit card price protection?

    • Bugger. How long did it take to arrive?

    • I just bought this, their website is excerable.
      'Australian post' lol
      Defaults to american express
      Really slow processing.
      Lol

  • +1

RRP 928.75 if anyone wonders. Also the discounted price is $639.90 plus delivery.

    • +2

      Load cell is basically compulsory.

Aliexpress have knock off boost kits too for around $50 versus the $250 fanatec is asking for.

      • So go with the better pedals, and get a boost kit knockoff. Any other upgrades you recommend?

        • +2

Those are the key ones imo. You could get a better wheel or a shifter if you're keen.

I don't actually have these but was researching last year. It did get to the stage that I was just going to go with a higher tier custom set up. The DD wheelbase would have been over $1k by itself…

The load cell is for the brake so you'll keep the other two for clutch and accelerator. It makes braking much more realistic.

      • ? I think the Fanatec offers an entire single pedal for $250 instead of just the boost kit?

        • +3

The boost kit is to up the torque on the wheel base from 5nm to 8nm

    • +1

I am running into a bit of an issue. The discount is only applying when I have the regular pedals twice plus the loadcell kit. I cannot get the load cell kit pedals added by itself.

      edit: image showing problem https://imgur.com/a/PCl46LR

        • At this rate, fanatec is going to lose a customer. So I added from the show current setup page and it quotes the price at 810, then I go to my cart and it is 925. Here are three images that show what is happening: https://imgur.com/a/8QjuXuS

          • @nk7: Their website has always been a bit quirky, but, I believe the pedals can only be part of one discount at a time. It can either be the base pedals + the bundle discount with DD/wheel, or, full price dd/wheel and bundle pedal set. The bundle with DD/wheel is the bigger discount, so makes more sense to combine those, but then you will be paying the full $250 for the loadcell.

            • @Iroh: Same problem here, and then the shopping cart goes all funky and I have to empty it and start again. Also if you add the pedal tuning kit the price is meant to be $790

      • +2

Having a similar issue. Trying to buy the bundle and add the load cell kit with the advertised discount of ~$79 but that discount doesn't apply due to the other bundle overriding it. I've just emailed them to work out how to get that deal they're marketing in the configurator and or if I can just upgrade the pedals completely to the V2 or V3s.

If you work out how to get it into your cart correctly let me know as I've been waiting a month or so for Fanatec or Moza to go on special… I have a playseat trophy sitting next to me fully setup with nothing attached to it…

        • I still haven't figured it out unfortunately. Their website is also extremely slow which drove me crazy and I ended up giving up. Hopefully support figures out the issue, please let us know if they have a fix

          • +3

@nk7: I'm tempted to just skip and still go with Moza and the R9. Will let you know if they respond.

            • @RaGH: Keen to hear back also. I've been pissing around with it all morning trying to get combinations to work so I can order. There's nowhere that says that the discount is tied to one bundle etc. The configurator is telling me to add the load cell for the $79 discount, I add it, then it tells me to add the 'tuning kit' for a $79 discount so I add that as a no brainer being they're only $59. Everything totals correctly in the config with the 8Nm R2R bundle but then add to cart and you're hit with everything at full price.

            • @RaGH: Well I can't edit the previous post. I've just gotten off the online chat. Supposedly this is a known issue with the configuration and that we kindly don't use this as it's not reflecting correct pricing. I said if they know it doesn't work then surely they should remove the function until it's fixed and asked that they honor and they advised that it's a management decision that it wont be taken offline and that they wont honor the discount.

Was tempted to send them the ACCC website link about pricing etc but given they're probably German or something they probably don't give a flying toss.

              • +1

@Dragonhorn: I haven't received any response from their support and the online chat rep said they didn't understand what I was asking despite me showing them screenshots.

Tbh this experience is making me lean towards moza as this raises a questions on their support. If this is how a potential customer is treated who knows how things go once they have our money.

                • +2

@RaGH: Gotta say this is a similar feeling I got after the online chat experience.
Whilst it may seem a bit petty it does make me wonder whether I want to be stuck in that ecosystem if their support/management decisions or whatever is like that.
Hell even if they would've said oh I'm so sorry but that's a pricing error, I can offer you 5% discount on that product instead or something silly I probably would've been okay.

Only downside is that the entry level moza pedals don't seem as decent as the csl w/ load cell upgrade from what I've seen and they're quite a bit more expensive overall if you're looking at the 8Nm fana bundle and comparing to the R9 and building a bundle.

    Perfect timing. Thanks OP.

This product is not compatible with any PlayStation® console and cannot be upgraded to achieve compatibility.

    =(

    • +2

I had the CSL DD before swapping it over with the GT PRO - both the same base (basically).

I ran the CSL DD on playstation, which read it as the GT PRO anyway, with use of DRIVEHUB. The basic difference between the two wheel bases is literally that Playstation/software compatibility, which the DRIVEHUB can overcome.

I didn't feel any difference between the two bases and the only real reason I changed was because I wanted a cleaner setup, ie. less cables.

At this price, I expect airbag to be included…

    • +19

It is. It'll be inside your delivered parcel. Although some people just call it bubble wrap.

  • Will this bundle works for xbox?

    • Nah won't work with OG xbox….

      • too bad then thanks

        • The listing says it's xbox ready…

You might need to check if the wheel is compatible though

    • You need an XBOX-licenced wheel to make it work

      • I add a cheap xbox wheel and is close to 1K, so will pass

    • +1

I ran my CSL DD on the xbox just fine - problem is generally xbox games aren't optimised for wheel use, or at least this wheel!

Tried on Forza 7 Motorsport and Assetto Corsa Competitzione and both were horrible experiences. However, no further development is being done (or was done at the time of testing) for Forza 7 plus ACC has always been a PC focused game. However, Dirt Rally 2.0 was fantastic on xbox and felt just as good as the PC version.

The wheel that comes with the package 'may' not be 'xbox compatible' - you might need something like this https://fanatec.com/au-en/steering-wheels/csl-elite-steering…

  • +8

Ngl this is a good deal in the eyes of someone who knows how costly sim racing is. Essentially double a g29 but then the shift knob may be an issue (for playing on console).

    • Just need the DD. Buy this and sell wheel and pedals for $100 would still be cheaper than buying just the wheelbase.

  • +1

Need to spend $50 for the table clamp too, I am on the fence

    • +6

…then 1k for a cockpit, then another 2k for triples. Sim racing is a slippery, expensive slope.

      • no room for a cockpit so will have to just bolt to desk

      • +1

        But soooo worth it

        • +2

I paid $600 for a T300RS and used it until it broke. This is leagues ahead of that. You'll get your money's worth out of it, and when you're done, could flip it at $400+ and have people climbing over each other to buy it.

      • VR baby!

Doesnt make you faster but is more fun IMO

        • Was going to try Quest 2 but with Quest 3 around the corner will have to hold out unfortunatley. Which headset you using?

          • @jar-unit: I dont move around so using a cabled device - HP G2. It has really good resolution for the price. Also have an older Dell WMR thats not to bad as well.

Im on like my fourth VR headset (I had previously Oculus DK2 etc) and I dont think any of the newer headsets is that much better to be worth the huge jump in price.

Im quite looking forward to the wave of AR headsets that are going to come out over the next few years

            • +1

@Franc-T: I saw the HP G2 looks like a good device, but it seems Quest 3 will beat it out and will be about the same price. As tempting as it is to buy one and take the hit selling later, thinking waiting for Quest 3 will be the smarter option, only a few months away

              • @jar-unit: The G2 was the best option for me when I bought it for $1K a year or so ago and it was had the best res for an 'affordable' headset.

A few month wait is most certainly worth it for a better product (which it should be as the G2 has been around for years now).

      • The cost all depends on how many compromises you're willing to make to save money. You don't need a cockpit or triples to have a good time…

Personally, this is what I did:
        - I bought 3 Dell 27" 1440p 75hz IPS monitors on special, totalling under $900, and I also use them for work and gaming (Thanks to dealbot for that one) (You could save further by going to cheaper monitors). Could go for VR instead, like a HP Reverb G2.
        - A good wheel stand will suffice, I grabbed the Next Level Racing Wheel Stand 2.0 for $289
        - I still use my old G27 which I paid $180 for like 8 years ago (I'm still on the fence about upgrading)
        - Buy or reuse a cheap office chair and set the monitors up on a desk or even use cheap monitor arms to move them out from the desk to wrap around you better, and you're set.

You can slowly upgrade overtime, and as others have said, just sell items when you're no longer using them.

  • +1

    Fantastic price for decent gear

    • +1

Yep, and for Sim Racing on PC, Fanatec arguably has the best software too.

      • +3

My concern is that I've seen that the QC can be hit and miss.

        • +4

And then the support almost always sucks

          • +1

@mickeyjuiceman: Both issues seem true although I have run fanatec bases since 2018 and only ever replaced a cable and the right shifter paddle on my formula wheel.

      • Easily up there

  • Oh man, I am tempted…

Does this have the same dd drive?

Does this mean i can just get the steering wheel later?

    • +2

Unfortunately no. That base is actually different and licensed for PlayStation with a Sony chip inside to make it compatible.

      • Thanks i will be using it for pc, is it the same DD??

        • Yep, same hardware other than the compatibility chip.

          • @Bedford: Sorry just few more questions, or to anyone reading thjs

Is it just the steering wheel that sucks here?
Are their much advantages to this basic wheel to the more expensive ones.
What am i looking to upgrade if i want improve my kit (not including shifter and handbrake)

            • +1

@aerona: Wheel is basic but functional, would be decent for drifting, rallying, general driving. No bells and whistles on it.

The gt3-v2 is a bit of a crowd favourite amongst the (budget) GT3+ drivers from what I understand and would be slightly better suited to that kind of car: https://fanatec.com/au-en/steering-wheels/csl-elite-steering…

From there, wheels go up in price (and functionality, build, design, form factor etc).

            • +1

@aerona: I haven't used this wheel before. I have a higher end Fanatec setup, but we're talking over $3k.

From my experience starting with Thrustmaster, going to Simagic, then going to Fanatec, this bundle is an absolute steal at the price, given the Fanatec software and ecosystem.

            • +1

@aerona: As a total package I honestly don't think you're going to get anything better so it's not really a matter of if it sucks or not. If you get the base Moza/Simagic offering then I'm sure people will say their baseline wheel also sucks. When people say a wheel sucks I don't think it's the same kind of "suck" people use when comparing direct drive versus non-direct drive. A wheel may not be the size you prefer or have the features you want but doesn't mean it "sucks" if you get me? Comparing wheels is really hard, there's lots to compare against and they creep up and up in value. It's hard to draw a line somewhere and say "Wheel X is better than wheel Y if it's $50 difference but not for $100". I've been using a 330mm round wheel for a long time on all types of cars and do just fine. Would I like a 290mm F1 style wheel? Sure, I have one coming haha! But will it make me faster? Nope. Make me enjoy it more? Probably. I've spent over 10k on my rig and the last place I spent money was my wheel.

              • +2

@lemto: Thanks for everyone's comments, I've decided to get one, i primarily use the car sim for drifting so it looks like ill be retiring my g923 logitech kit!

              • @lemto: Just throwing an observation in re: price, but I actually have no actual idea in this field about quality or price-to-performance for driving peripherals.

I was at scorptec recently to pick up a new CPU, and saw a full logitech wheel kit; wheel, pedals + shifter for $560.

Again, I have no idea how the two brands stack up performance-wise, just adding a note about price options.

                • @Sporange: I have a full logitech kit - this is way better as its direct drive (It feels loads better).

Im trying to buy the fanatec setup atm.

            • @aerona: You can easily get a new wheel - I have 3 wheels for my base.

A round wheel is the most versatile of course - other wheels come with more buttons or dials for car management etc. Eg. I use the Mclaren GT3 for almost everything except rally and drift where I need the circle wheel.

              • @Porker: The McLaren seems to be the overall favourite (and great value), I reckon

                • +1

@mickeyjuiceman: For the price, you get a lot of function and moreso than some more expensive ones in their line up. Quality is pretty good too.

  • +1

Thanks, I bought with the load cell kit. Will by the boost kit later. This is a really good price for new stuff and good savings in the bundle.

    • Did you manage to get the discount on the load cell kit?

      • yeah i did. Add the bundle first then go to show setup and add the load cell at the reduced price. Dont add any other alterations like the 8nm as it will remove the pack discount. Honestly it was a pain to order till I figured out how it worked.

        • How much was your total price with the load cell kit ?

          • @brotos: My guess is $889.85, I followed the suggestion posted above but it seems that no matter what combination is used the 288.85 and 79.90 discounts are mutually exclusive and tied with the specific CSL Pedals item added to cart

          • @brotos: $965 total.

            This is the Bundle ($640)
            plus load cell (+250)
            plus desk claim (+50)
            plus shipping (+26)

Ill grab a aftermarket boost kit elsewhere

            • @ruddiger7: So it seems you didn't get the 79.90 discount for the loadcell kit combo
It's an issue with their shop/cart setup

              but thanks for confirming

              • @teh_gimp: mm wonder if i should send a message to Fanatec to see if they can fix it up. $80 would pay for an aftermarket boost kit lol

              • @teh_gimp: Received an email back from them lastnight and yeah they confirmed that you cant double-dip the discount (unless I was to buy a second set of pedals and apply it.

    • +3

Get the boost kit from aliexpress. Fanatec are price gouging. People were actually DIYing their own boost kits.

  • +1

how does direct drive differ when compared to non-DD?

I had a Logitech G920, the steering felt so granular and artificial so i returned it. Like i could feel the "clicks" lol.

    how about this one?

    • +2

The G920 has two small motors controlling a gear so you get a clunk when it changes. This is a direct drive… so a powerful motor with the wheel attached directly to the shaft. It's night and day difference and at this price it's utterly insane value.

      • would you be able to compare it with real sports car with electric steering? say the GT86?

also will this wheel like "Free Spin" like other DD wheels? for example when you crash it will like spin so hard and so fast and injure you.

        • +1

I'm not across the Fanatec software but I would guess it's configurable enough to change its base feel. After that it's really up to the game's FFB and how it modeled the particular car you're driving. It gets kinda complicated to explain the difference between in game FFB settings and wheelbase-specific FFB settings that are applied across each game. I have a 20Nm wheel which will absolutely snap your hand in half at full power. I've dialed mine down to 10Nm and it's powerful enough in certain circumstances to hurt you. I'd only be guessing what 5Nm can do… maybe a nasty bruise?

      • G29 owner her (pretty much the same wheel).

This Fanatec great value and im buying one myself!

    • Were you using G920 on PC or console, and what game/s?

      • PC, i played AC.

there was very little feedback and it did not feel direct. Configured the settings based on YT recommendation and it felt better but not great still.

  • +1

Is that 5Nm torque the same as using a torque wrench (for comparison)? Does that take the wheel out of your grips or is it a light tapping kinda thing? Trying to guage the strength of this feedback it has. Genuinely interested.
