  • hmmm, so i couldnt buy a ipad pro down the line and use it with this? i read the specs, including:

One cable, no hassle: With 11+ thoughtfully placed ports, the Lenovo USB-C Dock (Windows Only) delivers unmatched performance while decluttering your desk. It only requires one USB-C cable connection to notebook to boost productivity.

  • +11

This dock works fine with my laptop, currently running Fedora 36. All USB ports work, and I have it connected to my laptop via USB-C, and driving 2 external monitors via DisplayPort.

    • +4

A man of culture I see. Good to know it can work with Linux too

    • +2

I'm also using Fedora 36 and it even updated the firmware of the dock a few months ago. I've got an HDMI monitor connected, power, ThinkPad, and a Logitech unifying receiver.

  • +1

Windows only? I wish it could work on macbook pro m1

  • Does this work with Dell laptops?

    • Same question, the back of my desk has 100000 cables, does it mean I can remove the charger of my Lenovo laptop and use this?

    • +1

It should ideally work with any laptop that has a USB C port. I use a Dell dock with my Lenovo laptop just fine

      • +2

It’ll work as a dock for laptops with a USB-C port but won’t charge (older) laptops that have a USB-C port without power delivery support

    • +2

You can buy a used Dell WD15 K17A on eBay for around $50.

    • The tech behind them is basically all rebranded displaylink. Should be fine as long as the dock/laptop have compatible connectors (I.E. USB C with thunderbolt/not if it requires it).

  • +2

Annoying these can't go above 60hz. I know it's intended for work machines, but I WFH and use the same dock for my work laptop and gaming PC. I use a USB switcher to point the dock from one machine to the other, which works very well.

    • +1

What usb switcher are you using? I'm going to need something similar for my home setup.

      • I'm curious too. Can you explain where the switch box sits? My worries Lenovo's are on her desk, and she'd like to share her home laptop and work laptop using the monitor and mouse and keyboard

        • So the output of the dock, that you normally plug into your PC, goes into the input of the switch, then one output of the switch goes to work laptop, and the other output goes to personal PC. So when you press the button to switch outputs, it's essentially simulating you physically unplugging the dock from your work laptop, and plugging it into your personal PC (which is literally what I used to do before I had the switch). Hope that helps.

          • @happykamper: Makes sense! If you don't mind sharing a link to the switch, that would be a big help. Thanks @happykamper

          • @happykamper: So what type of connection is there between the switch and the pc? My pc gfx only has dp and hdmi connections.

            • @cerveza: The switch is purely for splitting the USB out of the dock into two switchable channels. My particular Dell dock does HDMI and DP. My personal PC had DP out, but it's directly connected to my monitor, and not via the dock, because the dock can't handle 100hz signal that I need for my monitor.

      • +2

I use this one, works great for this purpose. It's USB-A input, so you might have to confirm if you can still use with this USB-C dock.

        • I had this one last year and it fried itself after about 3 months: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07S7YNN3S/ref=ppx_yo_d…

I miss the switching function though, so taking a punt on the one that you linked.

          • @jigna27: Yeah I didn't want to cheap out on something fairly important like this. I've had this one since May 2022, and had no issues at all with daily use.

            • @happykamper: I Also tried this one: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B09Z1T8YHB

Knew immediately it wasn't going to work. Haven't bothered again, but seeing you posted your solution works, I thought I'd give it another try.

              • @jigna27: Thanks for sharing that, I was actually tempted by that one recently, due to the separate switcher button; but will give it a miss.

                • @happykamper: The one you have isn't working reliably with my docking station, so I'm thinking there's something buggy with my DS that seems to prefer having the USB plugged directly into the source.

  • Can this drive two different resolutions at the same time? i.e. one monitor at 4k and one at full HD?

    • +1

      Yes.

      • +2

        Thanks

  • this is not windows only, idk why they say that

    • not exactly the same model
but looks like the thunderbolt 3 version cannot work with 3 monitors when using with Macbook pro (max 3 screens including the MBP screen)
Besides, ethernet port is not working either

    • I've had issues with the HDMI on these, it cleared up as soon as I installed a driver into Windows. I guess they're saying a Mac driver isn't available.
But Linux doesn't suffer those issues.

      • can u point me to the driver, having some issues

        • displaylink - but thats not a thunderbolt 3 dock… thats a usb dock

  • Can I use this on PC desktop as USB expander without the power delivery?

    • Yes. the power delivery is an extra function

  • I have this dock issued by my employer. It turned my very high spec gaming laptop into a POS when connected with random restarts, flashing screens when in sleep mode, crashes for no reason. All latest windows updates and drivers issued by Lenovo. No change. I thought oh, it must just be the laptop. Plugged it into my personal PC. Turned that into a POS too, take it off the dock and if functions normally. Thinking it was just me, I was talking about it to my staff members having a whinge who let me know they face the exact same issues across a range of different PC/Laptops. I'd avoid.

Loved this review, actually cracked up too haha.

      • Cheers. It's a rarity :)

    • Shit im experiencing this on a new lenovo from another deal.. runs garbage

  • +1

One of my clients use these and they're great until they're not.

Sometimes for no reason video issues arise and random fiddling and disconnect/reconnecting, regardless of cable or monitor is required to revive them.

They've 20+ and this has occurred with more than 1/2 of them. Some have been replaced under warranty.

Unsure if an issue from the Lenovo Laptops (mostly) - some are Surface devices.

  • +1

How does this dock compare with other Lenovo docks like the USB-C Dock Gen 2 (40AS)?

I've found using various TB4/USB-C docks to be hit and miss (and very tempermental) with some devices… I finally got my 40AS to work well with my HP laptop from work, my Macbook Pro 14" and my iPad Pro M2 (it randomly started working with my 32:9 screen over HDMI recently when upto that point it had black bars 21:9)…. but my new ROG Ally doesn't have any display out when connected to it.

    • I wish I had read this, before I purchased for my Ally :( haha.
Luckily, the older 165w Lenovo dock I use for my work laptop did display when I tested it (that's why I thought this would be compatible too). I guess I'll just swap the 2 over, as I'm at least sure this will work with my Thinkpad.

  • Is this thunderbolt? I searched online and it doesn’t seem to be.

So then the video capabilities are driver based or something… so not as good/stable as thunderbolt then?

    • +1

      no, this isn't thunderbolt
      this model number is 40B50090AU
the thunderbolt 3 model is 40AN0135AU
      https://www.amazon.com.au/Lenovo-ThinkPad-Thunderbolt-Dock-G…

      • Thank you! 😊

What’s your opinion on this deal then? I’m looking to drive two 4K monitors (1x HDMI, and 1x DP). Just for work, so 60Hz is fine for me.

I know the specs say this will work, but just wondering if you’re aware of any downsides with this mode compared to the higher-priced TB model?

I think it is WavLink docks that have issues, etc. because video capabilities are emulated or something and not natively supported? Was wondering if the same issue might apply with this dock?

  • Are those that say Linux is supported certain? I've had success with another Thinkpad dock:

    ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen2
    https://support.lenovo.com/au/en/accessories/acc500106-think…

but they all look very similar, so wondering how this model differs, and those that have tested Linux, are you sure it's this model specifically?

  • Any chance it would support 3x WQHD at 60hz?

    • I bought one of those recently, got it for $79 during an eBay plus sale. Works ok so far. Didn't come with a USBC cable, so that was an extra $20. One of my monitors doesn't work via display port though, not sure why. Ended up using a HDMI and display port in the end.
Audio driver is a bit temperamental though and occasionally disappears.

  • Figure I'll give it a go. standard pricing looks to be around $230, with the cashback its pretty decent. I found a video comparing USB-c dock Gen1 to the Gen 2 I have at work. It looks like this dock came after the Gen 2 but they have dropped the gen naming scheme.

  • Hows this vs the mini docks caldigit? tempted to go for caldigit for the dual 4k

  • I got one for work and annoyed it only has 1 X hdmi port

    • Just get an adaptor
