I think I'd rather backup my files on a NAS box at a family members house.

At least they wouldn't keep jacking the price year on year.

    • I think im eventually going to setup my own, prices keep increasing.
Ive heard FreeNAS seems to be the best / easiest.

      • Yep lots of options.

      • unraid or Debian if you have Linux experience

      • I got synology at mine and my parents and setup tailscale and rsync so they are securely connected and syncing over the net

        • Any guides for this? I’ve got a couple of QNAPs that I want to do the same with

          • +1

@chartparker: I never used qnap but it looks like tailscales available

            https://tailscale.com/qnap/

just set up an account on the tailscale website and install the app on qnap, its basically automatic and as if you threw a giant network cable to the next device, they will be in their own 'LAN'

    • It's worth it if you have the ability to do your own maintenance.
      Buy once, maintain forever.

This is why I’m so reluctant to properly utilise any cloud storage services. Once you start using it you either end up paying more because they hike the price, and/or you keep going up tiers because you need more storage. Then if you want to switch to something else, how easy are they going to make it for you to fetch potentially terabytes of your own data?

I back everything up locally, but I’m not super happy about this arrangement either (hard drives could corrupt, place could catch on fire, etc).

Not affiliated but have you checked out something like Backblaze?

  • Upgrade, get the device and then cancel with a pro-rata refund?

    • Sneaky 😵‍💫

      • Did anyone tried this? Its hard to get refund from google

    • Just subscription to Turkey. It's only $22 for a whole year.

      • I couldn't get Turkey working :( Moreover dont want to risk google account.

        • I created a separate Turkey account and family plan.

    • +1

      Refund policy
Google storage plan purchases are non-refundable. The amount of storage you purchased is yours for the length of the subscription, even if you decide to cancel it. In some countries/regions, you can end your subscription immediately and receive a partial refund.

  • Nothing :(

I too dint get the promotion email but I was able to access it via the google one hub at https://one.google.com/home . It should be under the member benefits section

      • yeah, it showed up in app & website.

        Thanks :)

I'm already on 2TB plan and never got any benefits… if I drop down to a lower plan, will this benefit come up?

    • +3

According to the Tc & Cs listed above ("Offer available only to users….. who were not subscribed to a 2 TB monthly or annual plan or above at the start of the offer period"), that would be a no, I'm afraid.

      • +1

Bummer. Serves me right for wanting to back up a bunch of photos a few months ago which pushed me into the 2TB tier :(

        • Same. I just upgraded last month too.

        • Feel your pain. I've been thinking about another cloud service to provide offsite backup for photos since my "lifetime" plan with Zoolz died. I did think that my lifetime plan with Degoo was also dead (also bought via stacksocial), but apparently not. Was 2TB but now seems to be 2.9TB, although (as I hadn't logged on for ages) they have however helpfully wiped everything that was in it. Hmmm. Not a biggie as I just need to re-upload but you get what you pay for I guess.

The annoying thing for me with the Google offer is I literally bought a 4k Chromecast yesterday. Could always do with another though, and the more backups the better in my opinion.

  • Edit, found it.

Open Google One app > scroll down to 'Get more from Google'
How do u see the benefit? In my upgrade settings there's no mention of free stuff?

    • I click on "get more storage" and it's there under the upgrade button for 2TB. If it's not there, perhaps your account isn't eligible eg currently not on a 100GB or 200GB plan?

Note - for those who have signed up, keep an eye open for the email from google in about a week. You will then:
    1. Visit the Google Store by clicking “Claim your gift.”
    2. Add a Chromecast with Google TV (4K) in the color Snow to your cart.
    3. Code will be applied automatically at checkout.

    • Email just came through, was able to order. Was worried it wouldn't come through due to being out of stock.

      • My email came through even though they were out of stock. Luckily they came back in stock a couple of days later and I was able to order. It turned up yesterday

  • I was paying subscription for the last 5 years… There's nothing in for me here :( All the new promotions focus on getting "new customers", loyal customers are always ignore. Sad!

Good for anyone who looks to upgrade though! If you use cloud storage to back up your precious data, make sure that you upload data to at least 2 different services I guess. Google has blocked this man because of a genuine mistake but refused to restore his access.

    • +1

Don't worry, you didn't miss anything. I signed up and can't claim the Chromecast because it's out of stock. Bunch of scammers!

  • For those who took up this offer last week, has anyone received the email from Google to redeem the Google TV (4K) device?

If yes, may you please let me know when you upgraded to the 2TB tier, when you received the email with the redemption link and what was the email subject line of it?

If no, when did you take up the offer to upgrade to the 2TB tier?

    Thanks in advance.

    • I got the redemption email today and it's out of stock. Chatting with support now. Seems a bit dodgy to offer this deal and make it impossible to claim
I tried to claim within seconds of receiving the redemption email.

      Here's their response

"it looks like right now we have reached the number of available Chromecast that can be redeemed as part of 2 tb benefit for Google One storage."

Dodgy AF. I literally had no chance of claiming this offer.

      • Thanks for sharing.

Ditto, just received the email today (subject: xxx, redeem your Chromecast with Google TV (4K)). Tried to redeem it, but OUT OF STOCK.

Yeah, it is a bit disappointing that we cannot redeem it immediately. However, since we've got until late July to redeem it, I will check back later in the next few days to see if they have more available. If they become available again and I manage to redeem it, I will comment here. Vice versa, if you notice it available, please let me know.

        Cheers.

        • +2

Yeah, I was going to keep checking to see if it comes back, I'll let you know

        • +1

Hey mate, they're back in stock. Quick!

  • +1

I got this offer in an email and upgraded the next day, today I got an email to claim the Chromecast and it's out of stock! Seems like a con

  • +2

Seems like they're available again for redemption 👍

    • Yeah, I went on the waiting list to be reminded when they came back in stock and got an email 8 minutes ago! :)

  • +1

Bit of a lure. I upgraded and had the offer on my benefits page. It said I would receive an email within 7 days and nothing came through. Now it's gone from the benefits page and I am chatting with their support. Hopefully they can sort it out. But if you did not receive one during the promo period. Maybe just chat to support, considering this is part of the Google One package.

    • Same here.

Edit - chat is woeful, they can't tell what plan I'm on. She told me to upgrade to a 2Tb plan. I already am one one for over a week… And now doing the "turn it off and on again routine" and asking me to make sure I have the latest version of the app.

      • +1

The person I spoke to on chat was alright. Put me on hold a couple times and after about a 10min chat, escalated. I got an email today with a code and a link to the store. So just ordered my free chromecast 4K.

        • Thanks, congrats! What date did you upgrade to 2TB? I did on 29th June. Might give them today to see if the email comes, otherwise will badger chat again.

    • +1

Mine took more than 7 days

      • How many days? I'm on 8 days now but I can't even prove I had the promo offered to me.

        • +1

Upgraded on 21/6 and got the email to redeem the Chromecast on 30/6

It was out of stock, but came back a couple of days later

  • +2

Just got the email and redeemed for Turkey Google One.

  • Got this offer when trying to upgrade from 100GB to 2TB plan. In Google One benefits list, it shows that the bonus "claim your Chromecast" offer will be available in 6 days. Nice one. It's easier to share with family members with it. Of course, I also use self-hosted immichi on NAS to keep another copy of all important data (Google Takeout is neat to have.).

  • +1

Was keen on this but for some reason, it doesn't allow me to use my play balance first before charging the rest on my card, just says "insufficient balance" when trying to use my play balance.

    • did you find a fix around this?

      • No, seems like a lot of others have experienced this as well. I remembered being able to partially use my google play balance in the past. Maybe they removed that ability.

        • The work around is to top up your Play balance to the amount needed to pay in full

  • -1

Good deal, but please think again when giving away your data to G. Also pricewise, it can be a trap, like their photos which were used to be free

  • -1

I'm currently on 200 GB with mroe to spare so hell no

  • Did anyone tried purchasing the google one 2 TB plan and claiming Chromecast and then cancelling the subscription? Does Google accept cancellations?

  • its a trap 🤓
