Uglier than a hatful of arseholes though.

    • +16

      Agreed, looks cheap.

      • +47

Looks like a bog standard SUV. Nothing good, nothing bad, looks very Toyota like on the inside with the lines.

        • +1

Looks like land cruiser made baby w volvo

      • +59

I would buy this cheap junk over other metal junks like Holden Craptiva any single day. Just wrecked my Craptiva after using 7 freaking years.

        • +28

7 Years of pain with a craptiva.
          Kudos.

        • +4

no wonder you can pick up 10 year old ones for about 3-4k

        • +8

Buying a Captiva is a poor life decision

          • +4

@Xizo: Hold your judgment for a min or two. Background: Holden used to employ people here in Adelaide, until the end of 2017. There were families, friendships and many small businesses used to depend on the ecosystem. We knew the risks and history of Holden cars. So, it was mostly a decision to support a local manufacturer, instead of buying Japanese cars and drag it till end of your life :) Fast forward to 2023, if Holden had decided to stop the manufacturing here due to "financial considerations", its time to move on to other Car makers who are trying to make decent cars. Companies like Mahindra needs a bit market support to make even better cars, as compared to those who extort $$$$ for their successful brands. Unless you are a real penny pincher, nothing wrong to support them ;)

Admirable intentions, but Captiva's were made in South Korea at the old Daewoo factory:

              https://www.carsguide.com.au/car-advice/q-and-a/where-is-the…

Only Commodores and Cruzes were made in Aus.

                • @RGuy7865: You needed to buy a car that was manufactured here to support local manufacturing jobs.

They stopped local manufacturing not because people didn't buy enough Korean built Captiva's but because not enough people bought Australian built Commodore/Cruzes. It's all a moot point now anyway.

          • @Xizo: its cheap so poor people buy it. if they had more money, they would have better options.

        • +4

Yeah I don't understand why car manufacturers don't get punished for cars with design faults just like any other not-fit -for-purpose good is.

Craptiva is a failure of design. $6k to fix a pos engine knowing it'll fail again.

        • +2

They say never buy a model of holden that ends in 'a'.

          • +3

@ShipShapeRC: Better make that 'e' as well to include the Cruze

        • Craptiva was only outdone by Camira as the crappiest Holden…..

          • +1

@fprjet: I bought a Camira in 1998. It fell apart in twelve months.

            • @NevC: Ahhhh memories… when we emigrated to Australia my dad bought a Holden camira as his first car here. I still remember 13 year old me having to get out and physically push the car out of the Narre Warren library carpark because it didn’t have a functional reverse gear anymore. I’m pretty sure that happened shortly after we got our citizenship.

Say what you will, but nothing will ever evoke so much positive nostalgia for moving to Australia than the smell of an old Camira. Straya!

Now I want MCM to do a Camira build

Ripped off the Renault Koleos leds

      • +18

For $37k what were you expecting it to look like? An Alfa Romeo?

          • @Drakesy: The H6 is not in the same size category as this Mahindra. You're comparing a similarly priced medium sized SUV with a large SUV.

            • +2

              @Zackeroo: the H6 is 4cm shorter

I mean it's all relative though, there are some things where 4cm can make a huge difference

              • -2

@Drakesy: I haven’t really seen these cars irl but looking at the outer dimensions darkest has a point that the dimensions are remarkably similar. There is a 300kg difference though but I’m not sure where that goes. Ground clearance could differ. There could be more equipment or stronger side intrusion or heavier duty drivetrain.

Towing capacity is actually higher for the Haval.

Maybe Indian is better than Chinese for cars though? Who knows.

Just seems a bit unfair to downvote drakesy so much without explanation as to why the disagreement exactly. Is it the 5 seat vs 7 seat? That would make a difference for some people for sure and not others. But perhaps people are assuming they’re completely differently sized vehicles because of that seating configuration and maybe part of that is actually down to a spacious 5 seats vs a cramped 7? But as I said I don’t know the cars. Maybe the dimensions are misleading because the haval doesn’t use up all its footprint and only swells out to those same outer dimensions in a small area while actually being much smaller inside. If this is the case the maybe haval do this to make it seem bigger than it is based on specs sheet? It’d be good for someone to clarify if they know.

          • -1

@Drakesy: Wtf are you talking about?
S6+ and S10 look good. Its a ute ffs. For like, actual work, not towing the boat from the union site to the pub to home on a friday arvo (stopping off to buy fresh fish on the way home ofc).

      • +15

Looks not cheap … looks like any other stupid SUV on the road (just blue not white … haha). Give me a small (and I mean small - Smart size) cheap electric runabout.

It's 16 June. some may find a hatful of arseholes quite appealing.

      • +3

why is a hatful of arseholes more appealing on the 16th of june rather than any other date of the year?

    • Upvoting you because you seem to get it.

    • And the World's dumbest comment goes to…..

  • +25

You could probably still get a 7 seater runout runout CRV for about 41k driveaway in comparison

    • +11

True, probably will have better resale value.

      • +2

Who knows where will we be in 7 years. $37k might become $37 and we wouldn’t care.

        • +2

if so, better put that $37k into crypto today and hope it ain't worth $37 in 7 years.

        • +1

I'm with you on this. People sit around worrying about resale more than simply outlaying less to start with.

Then it comes time to realise the resale and they just trade it in for cents on the dollar anyway.

    • +6

Does a CRV actually have 7 seats or is it just the same 2 very small seats suitable only for children?

      • +3

5 seats for adults n 2 seats reserved only for kids. Very uncomfortable for adults to sit on the 3rd row.

    • +1

Those prices were before Covid. Even a new Mitsubishi Outlander LS cost $45K

    • 2020+ model year with <100ks on it ?

  • +2

The front headlights look similar to Renault Koleos.

    • +7

Just far uglier. C-shape running LEDs has been Renault's signature since the 2015 release of the Talisman so Mahindra has definitely taken inspiration there. Just like what MG did with the ZS taking the headlights from the previous CX-5 and rear from the Renault Kadjar.

      • +3

MG is not MG- it's Roewe Shanghai Automotive Corporation.

        • +6

I know. When people refer to a car like the ZS, they're discussing the MG brand as it stands today - only one company is behind MG products that are currently available (been that way since 2006). You really didn't need to make an account just for that reply.

Good car, but resale value spoils it..

    • +2

will buy this after a few years then invite my inlaws over! this is the car they deserve!

    • +2

      Get one second hand?

      • Exactly. Buying new is for suckers. Once the initial depreciation happens, the rate of depreciation falls off dramatically and you have the same car for cheaper with less depreciation

    • Pleae provide evidence to support you claims.

      • I think it’s safe to assume that cheap brand cars have generally worse resale than say Toyota or Honda where long term reliability is well established and trusted. That’s always been the case.

It’s a trade off though because those cars cost a lot more to buy as well for the same reasons.

I think a lot of people want to buy brand new cheap cars, ride out most of the warranty period and then sell it to recoup some of the cost of repeating that procedure. Personally I think people have been bamboozled into thinking that if they don’t have warranty they will have something break that they can’t afford and do they must spend far more money on that procedure than they would even in the worst case scenario of something breaking in most cases. I say buy used and buy quality that will last, maintain it properly, and keep it for ages.

pretty sure these guys have been making decent cars for a while… although only in india. looks like crap but im sure at this price it will attact some. problem is they dont have any dealers anywhere so how the hell are u supposed to get it serviced?

      • +9

Why do you think it’s so cheap? Back to base for service and maintenance.

      • +1

Look is very subjective if you think of it in isolation of price.. there are people who love any model and those who would hate that model. Which SUV looks very pretty anyway! Durability is important and I believe this brand is known for that.

        • +1

My opinion is that SUVs are ugly in general also. That’s why I’m so confused by Aussies loving them so much. Especially soccer mum ones for the city. If you need 7 seats then sure I guess, since it’s either this or a van. Although vans are more economical. The one good reason I’ve heard is that if you have little kids in car seats you don’t have to bend so much to buckle them in for that brief time that takes. But People without kids or with kids that can get in the car themselves? Wtf. Compared to a sedan or hatch where essentially it may be an almost identical car, the difference is it’s heavier, more expensive to buy in a lot of cases, uglier (subjective), and raised, meaning higher centre of gravity meaning worse handling, worse braking, worse acceleration, worse fuel economy. Heavier suspension components costing more to replace in some cases. Etc etc. Most things you look for in a car are worse by just raising it.

Oh one other thing is good about SUBs with more ground clearance though, you can do an oil change without jacking it up if you can just reach under. But I’m sure that’s not a consideration for most Aussies buying SUVs

          • +1

@rhino015: Precisely so.. I never understood why do small families opt for less cost-effective, uglier and more expensive SUVs vs much nicer looking, cheaper and more cost-effective sedans. Parking lots in Australia (vs US) aren't even made for SUVs at the most places - sedans barely fit there. Not that everyone goes to camping every other weekend. For a couple or a family with one child, sedan is perfect and so much better looking, ay! SUVs are ugly in general.. too bulky for my choice. No matter which brand. I was in Europe in last holidays and I didn't notice that many SUVs there. Beautiful hatchbacks and sedans on the roads was quite refreshing, honestly..

            • @virhlpool:

less cost-effective, uglier and more expensive SUVs vs much nicer looking, cheaper and more cost-effective sedans.

That’s your opinion but there are plenty of nice looking SUVs that are compact and cost effective.

The reason families go for SUVs is because it offers more internal space for a growing family. It is much easier to drive because it has a better viewing angle as you are seated higher off the ground.

Have you driven a SUV before?

              • @MuddyClear: A lot of SUVs these days are essentially another non-SUV car, just lifted.

When comparing an otherwise identical non-suv to the SUV, you have the same room inside but raising the car makes it more expensive to buy, and gives it worse handling, braking, acceleration, fuel economy, and higher maintenance costs.

Sure you can see over other cars better, but now that everyone has them that benefit doesn’t work the same as it did when having an SUV was rare. Is it an arms race these days? Next minute we’ll all be driving inspector gadget’s car or something haha

                • @rhino015:

raising the car makes it more expensive to buy, and gives it worse handling, braking, acceleration, fuel economy, and higher maintenance costs.

That’s the price you pay for a better viewing angle unfortunately.

Sure you can see over other cars better, but now that everyone has them that benefit doesn’t work the same as it did when having an SUV was rare

All the more reason to get a SUV.
