Nice but small, 16.5cm diameter - 1-2 eggs? Camping?

    • +2

      Yes ?

    • +46

Small for humans, but this is about the ideal size for your cartoon cat or mouse to use.

      • +10

to cook with, or flatten the face of a nemesis?

        • +13

Definitely the flattening. You don't want a cartoon cat/mouse cooking for you - it tastes funny.

          • +2

@CrowReally: This comment really deserves more upvotes. Tastes funny šŸ˜‚

    • Also a great size for a small 1-2 person buffalo chicken cheese dip or similar in the smoker.

    • +2

Hmm, BigW have "masterclass" 6" (15cm) cast iron "mini frypan" going for $9…

I broden'd grabbed 6 of them (for doing individual serves of meatloaf/yorkshire/eggpie/whatnot)…

They're no Lodge but… eh, they'll work just fine for what you're using a 15cm pan for.

      • +3

Difference is the big W have an enamel coating while lodges are just pure cast iron surfaces

        • Ah, yes I didn't see that.

          Good spotting.

    • Could use inside barbecue for sauces, sautĆ©s etc. too

  • Amazon's listing states RRP $49.95 and "regular price" $24.31 on my mobile, and yet another "regular price" $30.13 on the laptop.

Keep in mind this is a tiny pan.

Also it seems it's "FREE International delivery" for Prime members, no need to spend $49, despite the deal title "Free with Prime on Orders over $49".

    • +1

I always interpret $0 with Prime/ $49 Spend as $0 with prime or if you dont have prime, $0 if you spend $49 or more

      • +1

Not really, sometimes it is a free international delivery only when you spend $49 minimum. Not in this case.

        • Really? That's doesn't fit with my experience. But I'm not an expert here…

          • @iDroid: Doesn't fit with my experience either, but I don't buy a significant amount from Amazon…

        • I might have hallucinated then.

I could swear I've seen "Free with Prime on Orders over $49" before and, well, it was not true in this case and was corrected.

    • On mobile app or mobile browser?

      • In a mobile browser "regular price" is $24.31 and I'm not logged in. In the app and on desktop, where I am logged in and a prime user, it's "regular price" of $30.13.

I'll have you know that 6.5 inches is well above average.

      • Especially after covid.

      • Boasting about 6.5" and then whipping out a pan of that size does not have the effect you're looking for (unless you like blushing, giggling, laughter & ridicule)

  • +12

8 inch is $24.13 if you wanted a bit more girth

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B00008GKDG?smid=A4XRJ8S0WXSO0&tā€¦

    • +6

Thanks for this, girth is what really counts

    • +1

Doesn't seem like any free shipping for Prime on this one :(

    • 8" normally $69.95 but "on sale" for $24.13,
      9" is normally only $42 ?

    • +2

I'm a prime member but this item is not eligible for free shipping. At check-out, shipping is $26.64 International delivery Saturday, 1 July. Are you getting the same?

      • Nope, still $18.22 with free International delivery Saturday, 1 July at this very minute.

        • +7

          He's referring to the fatter 8" not OP's 6.5"

        • +5

Yeah heā€™s talking about the 8ā€ which DOES NOT have free shipping sadly.

    • is 8inch big enough for a standard steak?

      • +1

Just big enough for a taco

      • -2

I'm sure 8 inches will be more than adequate..

      • it is if your standard size is adjusted for mortgage repayments ā€¦.. loweā€™s portion sizes ā€¦.

    • ^size or diameter you mean..

    • +1

$34.97 with free shipping from Amazon JAPAN

    • Additional $26.64 delivery fees for this one

    • Makes my eggs look smaller..

      Thanks, but a hard no.

    • Exactly what I need :)

  • +1

I need a new skillet. My Jim Beam one was abused camping and at home using cold water to clean after use (not recommended) Now I have a crack it it that leaks oil when cooking. Will be sent to the camp box and replaced now.

Don't hit hot skillets with cold water lol let it cool then clean.

    • +3

I always wash with boiling water while hot with a brush and cleans up easy with a few years worth of seasoning now.

  • +2

Did anyone get any of the 3.5 inch ones 4 years ago?
Probably my most underutilised frying pan. And I got 3.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/509352

    • +2

what were you intending them for, that just seems too small for anything useful?

      • +6

        Quail eggs and Melba toast

      • +1

Thats a weird question to ask an impulsive ozbargain buyer.
To be honest i wasn't expecting them to be so small. Got thrown out by the dimensions in inches maybe.

        • To be honest i wasn't expecting them to be so small.

          That's what she said

  • Was excited to see this but it looks a bit too small. Is this big enough for a standard steak?

    • 6.5ā€ is the diameter of the rim. The cooking surface is 4.5ā€. So depends on your steaks - this wonā€™t be big enough for a lot of tbones but would be fine for a scotch fillet for instance

      • +1

Its a handy size for sides like a potato gratin or if you want some onions or a fried egg on a weber q while you cook burgers. Dutch baby pancake.

That type of thing. Handy for certain purposes.

      • +1

You should use a bigger skillet for more thermal capacity/buffer for a better crust on the meat.

  • +1

Just found out Kmart also sells cast irons

    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/29cm-cast-iron-frypan-43037ā€¦

    • +3

that looks like a sad cast iron pan :( nothing like the amazon pics. Why so?

      • +2

As long as it can cook my steaks good, i dont care if it looks depressed or not

    • Weird I just had that thought when I saw that this morning. 29cm and 2.5kg would be an absolute beast to move around. I feel like a 10 incher would be perfect.

      • +3

What sort of crazy mad man are you? Mixing cm and inches is reserved only for the mad and insane. Repent your sins and hail 6 Cyndi Llauper's or forever be damned.

        • Well the last time NASA mix metric and imperial they lost a spacecraft worth millions.

          • @skillet: Rumor has it that aNoPHeLeS was on the team.

  • +1

Lol this is so small. What are you cooking? One fried egg?

    • +2

Its actually pretty useful. Perfect for 2-3 eggs or some mushrooms on the side with dinner or cornbread.
Seriously we use this one all the time

      • +1

Fair. I guess it has its uses.

    • +3

My kids love them - they cook all sorts of single serve dishes in them (usually revolving around eggs).

  • +2

Shame no free shipping on the 8

  • $18 in the cart then $30 once I get to the payment page, wtf Amazon?

    • +1

Mine showed $30 at payment minus $11 prime discount, check further down the page that it doesn't show $18 total?

  • I know the size is right there but was still kinda surprised by how small it was. Have only used it a few times to either cook a sausage or two, a single burger and for a couple of eggs.

  • Does it bottom need to be flat for induction cooktop to work properly? Asking as I noticed the bottom has Lodge logo.

    • +1

You don't even need a pan to touch an induction cooktop for it to heat up, I sometimes slip a little heatproof mat between the cooktop and the pan if I am scared a pan will scratch the cooktop.

  • Any reason to buy this if i already have the 10" Lodge?

They are really well built hurt my wrist first time picking it up.

    • +1

pfft 10" you should try the 13"

no reason to get this if you have the 10" IMO.

  • Still haven't used the one I bought 2 yrs ago.

  • Eh, thanks but ill wait for a bigger size at a better price

  • According to the specification it uses 1400 Watts…so not very camping friendly…you will need a lot of eneloopsšŸ¤£

  • bought one but don't know why.
it uses 1400 Watts, I only cook with gas, is it suitable for gas stove?
otherwise I have to cancel the order.

    Thanks!

    • +1

Works perfectly with a gas stove.

Heat up the cast iron before cooking for at least 5 minutes on a medium heat (pan is read when the handle is too hot to hold).

  • +4

I donā€™t know how you guys maintain the non stick. I tried so many methods and after a couple of uses or 1 most times the non stick just does. I find buying Myer brand non stick for super cheap price kick easier. The brand is called The Cooks Collective. Can even go into the dishwasher although I would recommend hand wash as lasts longer. And after 10-12 months when it no longer non-stick then I just buy a new one for like $25-30 and I find it so much easier in life

    • +2

      Sounds easy and wasteful af.

      • I donā€™t like it either but Iā€™ve tried baking the lodge tried to fry it many times with oil and just lose the non stick so easily. Do you know whether you can Ruin Lodge or they are impossible to ruin?
But the Myer version is just so cheap and easy with life.

        • Apparently the only way to ruin this cast iron pan is to give a hot one a temperature shock under cold tap, from the comments above.

I've been using the same cheap ikea non-stick pans for years. One's steel bottom is all scarred by my gas stove. The frying surface is pristine. It gets matt occasionally when I put it in a dishwasher.

I wonder how it's not common knowledge to avoid metal spoons, forks, scourers, too much rubbing on all non-stick pans.

    • +2

Really? I cook almost exclusively on cast iron and it's insanely non stick and lasts forever..

Are you seasoning your pan? If so, are you seasoning your pan correctly?

I scour the hell out of mine with a stainless steel scrubber and some detergent - dry and oil them over heat so they smoke. Never had an issue, own over 10 cast iron pans and all work perfectly - some expensive but most cheap.

      • 10? Overkill?

        • Yeah, what happened to all of them?

    • +1

Don't worry too much about it the seasoning - it builds up over time as long as you keep using it, using a little extra oil in the beginning helps. Some people will tell you never to scrub them or use soap - I use morning fresh and a blue scourer and my pans are pretty non-stick ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ

  • +4

Great for testing out your smoke alarm

Have bought lots of Lodge gear over the years. Itā€™s solid gear and considerably weightier than youā€™d expect.

But apart from the pancake griddle, I havenā€™t used any of the others since discovering Solidteknics. Not exactly a bargain, but occasionally can be found for a few dollars off online, or via one of their frequent kickstarter campaignsā€¦

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/solidteknicsusa/seasoneā€¦

    • Saw them in david jones the other day, which hopefully means some discounts during EOFY.

  • +1

this size is great for shashuka for one ā€¦..eggs on spiced tomatoe concaise ā€¦ā€¦ some canned tomatoes , spices and 2 eggs and you have $15 cafe breaky ā€¦ā€¦.were $12.95 in 2019 when i bought mine from amazon.
