    I know it's chilly but that's a lot of cash for a hand-warmer!

People have always wanted to play games on the road.

The popularity of handheld pc gaming has increased significantly in recent years due to the advancements in technology that have made it possible. Just a few years ago, before the Steam Deck was released, the handheld gaming market was dominated by the Nintendo Switch (and before that, the Nintendo DS). And you're basically at the mercy of Nintendo with their pricey switch games and draconian policies on emulating retro games.

I believe handheld gaming has always been popular, not just among the younger generation but possibly the older generation. The fact that you can just pick up and play means it's easier to fit in small gaming sessions in between work, taking care of kids, sleeping and chores. Folks with busy lives and tight schedules might find handhelds more appealing this way.

Nintendo isn't that draconian, their consoles are just busted wide open. I suspect that's why Hogwarts is so delayed on switch. Or Guardians of the Galaxy came out as a "streaming version" for switch.

          pricey switch games

@jjcf: worth it not to give nintendo money

              • @congo: DMCAing emulators and community projects that are entirely legal

                • +2

@maybe a bot: It would have been smarter (for Nintendo) to include emulators games in the store for a small fees.
It would have been a win-win.

          • @jjcf: To be fair that's only like 15-30 Nintendo switch games. I suspect many would have that many on PC already. Both solutions are worth it depending on what's being sought..

        • switch costs much less

I bought a steam deck entirely because its cheaper to run electricity-wise than computer..and electricity prices are getting ridiculous.

You're only looking at this through your own perspective. Im on public transport for a total of 2hr15 min a day. I game when traveling and very seldom when I'm at home. Without a handheld I wouldn't have time for any games at this stage of my life

Interest going up because people spend big money buying handheld?

    • +1

It's all relative. For some people, it's a huge purchase. For others, it's probably a tiny fraction of the income they make.

What would be the advantage buying this over the Ally? $300 more for Zen3/RDNA2…??

SSD size difference sure but not for the loss in power + $300 premium..

    • +1

Yes its nice build quality these but other then that no reason to get it for this price.

    • +4

There is no real advantage to getting this over the Ally as far as I'm aware. (Other than the design but that is subjective).
People keep listing this older AYANEO 2 which uses the 6800U. The current AYANEO devices are the AYANEO 2S and AYENEO GEEK 1S which use the 7840U.
The 2S is more comparable to the Ally.

Considering you can now buy the Ally and AYANEO 2S, I definitely wouldn't be considering an older gen device at this price point.

I’d probably go for the Ally at this price.

      For cheaper price, you get:
      - Newer Zen4/RDNA3 (although at lower wattage performance jump isn’t significant)
      - 120Hz VRR screen to smooth out frame drops even if you’re not playing at high refresh rate
      - Better control ergonomic (according to a review I saw that said AYANEO2 layout is not comfortable because it’s not V-shaped)

You get less storage on the Ally but it has a microSD slot for cheap expansion so overall not a big loss. I also noticed that ASUS has been more active in updating their firmware updates, maybe just to please early review woes but if that continues, it’ll be a more relevant machine long term.

what is the graphics performance comparable to ? 3050 ?

    • I logged in just wanted to say: I personally would NOT buying anything from Kogan. I consistently experience terrible customer service and damaged box 📦 of delivered items due to lack of care and protection.

  • Can i use this to play Diablo4?

    • +1

Yes but the Asus ROG Ally would deliver better performance

      • Asus ROG Ally vs SteamDeck
        Which one is better?

        • Depends on what games you're playing Steam Deck for low powered games and emulation is better, for AAA titles then the Ally is best as you will likely be plugged in / not expect massive battery life on the go but need the performance.
