Bioslim VLCD Meal Replacement Shakes 18pk or 12pk $8 (Usually $30-$45) in-Store Only @ The Reject Shop

100

Very cheap price for meal replacement shakes. I’ve never tried this brand nor done a VLCD but do sometimes have one for a very quick breakfast. In general in find meal replacement shakes too sweet for my liking.

The way VLCD works is you have 3 shakes a day + two cups of low carb veggies, 2litres of water and nothing else to rapidly lose weight. It’s only recommended for overweight and obese people, though I’ve seen some women do it just to be thin. If you stick to it I believe it’s actually effective and people tend to eat smaller portions after and can keep the weight off. Supposedly can be used to manage and even in some cases reverse type 2 diabetes https://bjd-abcd.com/index.php/bjd/article/view/793 There’s also some interesting info presented on this on the How to Live Younger ‘food’ episode on iview that probably changed my mind about VLCDs.

Anyway if you normally do shakes either for all or some meals, this is a bargain. Probably check the best before date when buying.

Looking forward to reading people’s views on these shakes and VLCDs

The way VLCD works is you have 3 shakes a day + two cups of low carb veggies, 2litres or water and nothing else

Key part here is the "nothing else". Super simple to lose weight, but it is incredibly easy to inadvertintantly have enough snacks to stop you being in a calorie deficit

    • Yes, has to be nothing else. Though those low calorie noodles eg changs are allowed, which make for a good accompaniment for veggies in a clear broth.

      • Ignore me, it’s only low calorie not actual low carb.

As an overweight adult, I burn 2k+ resting calories per day.
Three shakes is under 600 calories, two cups of veggies would be another few hundred.

I would need to do a lot of snacking to stop being at a calorie deficit.

      • +2

I think the whole point of these kind of shakes is to have a large calorie deficit and lose weight rapidly (under supervision or a dr of course)

      • I would need to do a lot of snacking

I agree, but it largely comes down to what a person classifies as a "snack". A reason so many people suck at diets is their inability to count or estimate calories. What is "a lot" for some people, is "just a few" Tim Tams, half a bottle of fruit juice, and bowl of nuts which are popularly considered healthy but are very calorie dense.

Yep I think that’s the benefit of this kind of thing. If you stick to it strictly with no snacks etc it take the thought out it. Which if your health is compromised with T2DM may be worth it. I think it might also help to reset habits by working through fatigue, stress etc without reaching for food, and then ease into a normal healthy lower calorie diet. The addition of the veggies might even be a 100% increase for some people.

@morse: Yeah, fully agree - this isn't the only way to lose weight effectively and healthily, but I have no doubt that it would work well if people stuck to it :)

In general in find meal replacement shakes too sweet for my liking.

Maybe for LCD meal replacements, but I found most VLCDs I tried before my surgery had barely any sweetness at all. Although these do have 14g of sugar.

Anyway still a bargain. Couldn’t believe how much I spent on them.

    • I’m surprised how expensive they are too! This is definitely a great price for those who need or want to be on the shakes. For me there’s something a bit sickly sweet about them (though I’ve never had this brand), not sure if it’s an artificial sweetener taste.

      How’d your surgery go?

I wouldn't recommend this method to lose weight. Yes it works, but most of the time you will gain the weight back as easily. I've done it twice and in both times I gained it back. Its just not a sustainable way to keep weight off. This meal replacement is more suitable for people who urgently need to lose weight fast for like surgery or anything like that and do not have much concern if the weight comes back after.

For a long term goal I recommend a more sustainable diet. Eat more healthy food, reduce calories intake and up your exercise. Play the long game. A lot of people also want to lose weight by avoiding exercise, I wouldn't really recommend that either. Exercise is not only useful to burn calories, it is also a good mental exercise to support your healthy lifestyle journey. I did this since last November and have lost 15 kg since, that includes a couple holidays (which is usually my crux when I would gain my weight back after). I'm back on my weight in the 20s and never been fitter than I am now. Still maintaining what I eat and exercising. In fact I enjoyed exercising so much now that it becomes my favourite time of the day.

There is an occasional temptation to go back to my old self, but so far I haven't cave in, thankfully. I really think it's more of a mental battle than it is physical

Yep there's no "easy" method to losing weight. Diet pills, replacement shakes and even surgery are all temporary fixes and won't fix lifestyle choices.
It's pretty simple in principle - eat less food, do more exercise. Less calories in, more calories out.

I used these to lose 10kg~ over a period of 2-3 months. I only replaced 1-2 meals, not the full 3. But since I stopped the weight is slowly coming back on due to my diet (the McFeast deal isn't helping).

Really good comment. Hit the mark.

I’m not a dietician but I’d also add that these highly manufactured powders don’t replace fresh natural fruits and vegetables which our bodies are evolved to consume. Even with all the added vitamins, minerals and fibre. I don’t think we humans yet fully understand the gut and still think that a milligram of vitamin C in a manufactured powder is the same as a milligram in a carrot.

      • One interesting thing about these VLCDs is they recommend people eat the two cups of veggies. And some even say for the low starch veggies you can have more. As crazy as it sounds that might actually be a substantial increase for some people. Some people are probably coming from a pretty dire baseline.

        • +1

Yeah true, that’s right. They say it because it’s marketed as a meal replacement but it doesn’t replace veggies and fruit. It’s a good way to lose weight I guess, you just need to try not to put the weight back on afterwards.

    • +1

      Well done.

There is also a both-and approach. Have a shake or three per day to kickstart, 0 or 1 for the rest of dieting period, and finally 0 for maintenance/lifestyle but option to lean on them again if ever needed for minor course-corrections.

    • Thanks for sharing your experience. I’ve always thought that might be the case. I was intrigued when I saw on that show referenced above though and some of the literature that says it can actually be better for some people. I think the thing is if you do this until you’ve reached goal weight and then go back to calorie surplus it’s obviously going to just come back. I would think it would need to be a large calorie deficit for a while on the shakes, followed by continued calorie deficit with regular foods before maintaining. I think many people do the deficit and then go back to a surplus. You’re 100% right about exercise- best way to enhance and maintain any dietary changes. Congrats on your weight loss too!

        Thanks for the support!

The thing is when you go on this kind of extreme diet, at some point you are bound to leave it, because obviously it’s not sustainable for long term. The danger is as you’re leaving it, you could get carried away and makes it really hard to stay on calorie deficit diet.

I think if anyone would use this to kickstart their weight loss, don’t go replacing all meals. It’d be too extreme. I’d say one meal a day at most. But add exercises and opt for healthy & balanced food for snacks and other meals. Abandoning carbs, protein or fat completely is going to make our body crave and we could end up revenge eating instead.

Also.. log the food to allow meal planning (I could tell you exactly what I eat everyday since last November).. especially important on days when we are socialising!
