Good deal. I got the 14 inch M1 with 8 core and 16/512GB for $2347 at officeworks.

    • +1

likewise, 24 gift cards to get the extra 10% off, painful, but good price, and upcoming tax return. Will see if I can work with a Mac, but my last 3 Windows laptops have been average at best. So far very happy, has connected to everything seemlessly.

      • +1

be curious to hear how it goes in a few weeks time - you know, when you have to plug it into a charger for the first time haha.

awesome laptops, the current m series ones - definite pros/cons with the mac/windows debate too, but I love my little m1 air, bought it at release, and i think the biggest downside is its freezing cold to the touch in winter.

i think the biggest weirdness with mac for me is file management - finder is a bit more work for me vs windows explorer (im a folder tree fanboi).

and im not sure if its changed in recent versions but copying a folder over another folder doesnt merge.

plenty of pros of macOS too of course, but im not gonna preach. i use both OS's on the regular and i like em both, if i have a personal pref, thats personal haha.

i do strongly feel all mac users should enable 'Three Finger Drag'. please try it.. and umm.. thank me later lol. (it will convert the three-finger gestures to 4 fingers, and it means 3fingers on the trackpad is equivalent to click+drag. works brilliantly)

        • +1

+1 for the three finger drag tip. Something I enable on every new Mac I use / wife uses.

From memory it's in a pretty obscure location though… so prob need to Google how to enable it.

Also - some people use three finger drag gesture on the track pad to change desktops… so if they use that a lot they won't like the three finger drag.

          • @elib: is that the swiping between virtual desktops? that just became a 4 finger gesture automatically for me, i use it all the time ; love it.

            • @yahms: Not sure.. I never use virtual desktops :D Looking at "More Gestures" under settings… it looks like these three gestures all use three fingers in different ways:
              - Swipe between full-screen apps
              - Mission Control
              - App expose
              All of which I've disabled…

              Anyway!

              • @elib: yeh so with '3 finger drag' enabled, they will read as being 4 finger gestures

EDIT wait no, theres a 3 and a 4 finger option now. in the older macos versions, it used to just change them all for you. maybe it still does that, not sure, coz its been like this for a few versions. but long story short, you can still do any of the 3 finger gestures, just with 4 fingers

                https://imgur.com/a/N8t2T8d

          • @elib: Three finger dragging is in the 'accessibility' and then 'trackpad' options I believe.

For anyone interested you can price match this deal at Officeworks and pay using 10% off Ultimate Home Gift Cards from Woolworths to save an additional 15%

      • It's out of stock in VIC, and I was told they don't price-match online

        • Managed to order one of these from officeworks today with delivery and it was price matched to JB, so I would suggest to give it another go. Could have just been a bad rep.

          • @iamnotborat: nah, I gave up. Thanks for the info tho

            • @crispynuy: Space grey is in stock in Victoria at JB, you can try again if you don’t mind the space grey colour.

Also, it doesn’t need to be in stock in the state for price match, I think it just needs to be in stock in Australia to be delivered to your address (they generally just price match and add delivery cost charged by JB which is ~$10).

      • Be careful when placing an price match order with Officeworks, particularly if you've never done it before.

I tried ordering a silver one yesterday but their "security team" had the order rejected less than 30 minutes after.

Their excuse "We have requested that our security review your order again unfortunately it did not meet our customer privacy and security standards when shopping with Officeworks. It has been cancelled & a refund processed.

As an alternative, please visit one of our stores to purchase this item. "

I had to go to the store and order it that way instead.

        • That is odd, I’ve never had that experience before and is the first time I’ve heard about it. I usually price match in store anyway, especially if I am paying with gift cards.

  • Great value

  • +1

On eBay regularly you can get hardly used (like new) 16" M1 Max 32GB 1TB+ for just over $3k

    • But it would be hard to claim tax return on eBay purchases.

      • +6

Why is that? As long as you have a receipt, can prove it is for work… does it matter where you get it from?

      • Tax deduction should be fine as long as you can provide eBay order receipt. It’s the GST that you won’t be able claim if there is no GST invoice, hope that helps.

        • +2

Oh I thought I wouldn't be able to claim eBay purchases for tax deductions. I've been missing out!

          • -1

@awesomise: Be careful, maybe the seller has already used it for tax claim? no one knows.

But with that said, it's seller's problem not yours. As long as you use/claim it legitely it should be fine.

          • @awesomise: Since yours was used, if you hadn't got the original invoice from the seller (not an ebay confirmation or anything from ebay), you can't claim the tax, most probably.

    • Um… yes that’s why they are cheap I think :)

  • +1

I’ve got a trip to NZ so will claim the Customs discount

    • You cant bring the same product back under the new TRS rules

  • Pay with 10% discounted gift cards will bring it down to $2436 shipped. Good deal

  • +2

FYI, might not be the case for you, I bought from JBHIFI the same model MacBook about 2 months ago and while it was new in sealed box it was obvious that it has been sitting in JB stock for a long time and by default it was showing as warranty expiring in October 2023 and invoice didn't have serial number so I had to speak to Apple support in order to update/validate purchase date and fix the warranty period.

    • +1

I'd be concerned the battery life would be shortened by flattening out during 18months+ of non use. Or maybe Apple has some sort of BMS magic that keeps it healthy??

      • +2

Battery health showing as %100 and AppleCare+ expiring in May 2026 so I'm not worried

      • +1

Valid concern, generally I wouldn't be worried as long as its above 20-30 percent when you turn it on for the first time. I'd guess most these devices with massive batteries and presumably design features to minimize vampire draw while in the box would keep them above that for years in storage.

If its dead when you get it out of the box, then I'd be considering a return… capacity drops a lot quicker once charge is at 0

    • Its a relief Apple were able to fix up the purchase/warranty dates for you.

  • Would it be worth an extra $180 (and half the storage) for the M2 Pro??

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/macbook-pr…

    • +6

IMO no. not much gain with actually slower disk speed and obviously half the size.

    • I'd buy the M2 Pro just cause I want the HDMI 2.1

      • Only relevant if you want to output 4k 120hz (or more) though right? So probably not an issue for most people, and certainly gamers aren't buying this device.

        • +1

Yep exactly, I have the M1 Max and the only thing that bothers me is the HDMI 2.0 in it paired with my LG C2 42" running at 4k 60hz. But yeah if you already own a M1/M1 Pro device I wouldn't upgrade to a M2/M2 Pro.

But if I was buying something new I'd still go with the M2 Pro just cause its new, even though the base M2 Pro has a slower storage and compared to this deal half the storage as well.

      • I would buy the M2 as its a whole generation newer..

      • I got myself a DisplayPort to USB-C cable from Amazon and getting 144Hz on 3440x1440
For me, HDMI port is only good for when travelling and you want to connect something quickly without bothering with dongles or additional cables and chances of finding a display with high refresh rate on the go is slim to begin with.

  • FYI, other macbooks are also on sale

  • does this model of the M1 support more than one monitor? because the 13 inch M1 only support one monitor.

    • -2

I think it’s one external monitor officially. But I’ve personally had multiple monitors connected via a DisplayLink dock, required drivers to be installed etc.

      • but this M1 Pro version does it natively support dual monitors?

        • yes it supports multiple monitors 3 atleast.

        • +2

"Up to two external displays with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors (M1 Pro) or

Up to three external displays with up to 6K resolution and one external display with up to 4K resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors (M1 Max)"

          https://support.apple.com/kb/SP854?locale=en_AU

        • I tried it with 2 monitors one via DisplayPort to USB-C cable and one via HDMI port at the same time, worked fine and I was getting 144Hz on my main 3440x1440 monitor.

  • You can speak with the salesperson at JBHIFI to have a further discount. I have this machine at a lower price.

  • i am on the fence though my 2020 macbook pro 13 inch CTO with 1tb and 16gb of ram and M1 processor is almost 3 year old I am thinking either thing or waiting till next year for a M2 version

    • +1

With tech, if you don't need it right now, always wait. M3 chips will be out by then, will be faster and use less power. At the very least there will be decent EOL discounts on the old M2 units.

    • +1

This is a no brainer for anyone with an Intel Mac that can afford the jump.

For anyone on another M* Mac, it isn't so clear cut - unless you have a reason that the M1 frustrates you that the M1 Pro will fix, you'd probably be better off waiting a few more months for M3 to be released and M2 to be discounted. Or wait 4-5 years because these Apple silicon machines are that good.

    • You already have a good MBP, so I'd suggest waiting till next year's release. If you upgrade now, you're probably not going to see huge improvements, but it all depends on your use case.

      • they need to bring egpu support back!! even since I went from intel mac to M1 Back in 2020 I have had to sell off my egpu!!

  • +2

Ugh I am super on the fence about this.
I have a 2017 base level MacBook Pro that is just about clinging on- battery lasts about 90 mins. Once it finally gets going it’s just about usable (multiple VS code projects running in dev mode at once is main use case) … But the M2s might be on sale later in the year (September??) . This is coming up to 2 years old now

    • The screen alone is reason to upgrade, I don't think it gets the attention it deserves tbh. Had my M1 MBP since release, awesome machine.

M2 discounts will follow the same pattern, light discounts with deep discounts only after M3 is out. At which time you'll be wondering whether to wait for M3 discounts.

  • +1

How much is this spec originally for?

    • +1

If you’re asking what the retail price was it would have been ~$3900 at launch. The current M2 Pro mid tier spec is being sold for $3999, so definitely would have been close to that. Although you could have picked this up for ~$3300 from the apple education stores

If you are asking what the price was before discount right now, it currently retails for $2897 at Officeworks. JB currently have 10% of their prices for Macs (which ends tomorrow)
