  • Can an Ipad gen9 use like a Mac book for kids with keyboard and pencil with it?

    • No, different operating systems on them. Depends on what your kids need/want to do with the device though as many popular software packages have iOS apps available.

New M2 air can be had for less than $200 more than this any day if you know where to go. Much better but now. This needs to be sub 1k for it to be a deal.

    • +6

Where are you getting the m2 air for less than $1450?

      • +5

        Seems to be a secret

        • +5

          More likely completely fabricated.

          • +4

@dstar012: Yeh he’s flexing. Ozbargain equivalent of flashing your gold bounty Rolex. “Look at the awesome deal I got that only people in the know can get”. If it’s a secret under the table deal then he wouldn’t have said anything in the first place. The only point of his post is to show off

          • -1

@dstar012: At the risk of actually flexing I recently paid $1297 direct from Apple University Store for M2 air stacking Cash Rewards (7%) and Apple gift cards (15%). Wasn’t hard at all. The reason I didn’t quote the SAME price as this M1 deal is these offers are not regularly available - the $200 extra amount I mentioned is. Anyone with half a brain (like me) can figure it out.

            • @Fancydancer: Receipts or it didn’t happen.

            • @Fancydancer: My Cashback was rejected for Apple store, said you can't pay with gift cards. This was via Shop back so maybe if you buy the GC with shop back then use CR to checkout you can stack?

              • @Agret: Next time try to convert GC to store credit, I’ve never had one rejected yet, about five purchases now.

            • -1

@Fancydancer: Hahahaha, you said - and I quote "New M2 air can be had for less than $200 more than this any day if you know where to go. "
Do they run the Cash Rewards (7%) and the Apple gift cards (15%) everyday now?

              • @dstar012: If you want M2 today for about $1440 (less than $200 more than this deal’s M1) then go to Coles and buy Apple Store cards using Flybuys deal, then go to correct Apple Store where you’ll find it for $1597. (Approx $1600-160=$1440) or M1 for $1170 approx.

I didn’t do this, I stacked other offers that I’m not claiming are regularly available.

Of course if you enjoy paying more and buying from HN then no one is stopping you. I’ve had plenty of Negs from people who seem happy to do that, hopefully others can save some cash though.

        • -4

It’s definitely no secret, you don’t need to scroll far down almost every post for Mac deals to find out. Eg. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/780464

    • +1

The m2 is much more expensive. Also the base model is not as good as the m1 (slow ssd). You would need to get a 512gb.

      • +1

What's the real world impact of the slower SSD?

        • +3

Depends on what you're using the machine for:

          https://www.theverge.com/23220299/apple-macbook-air-m2-slow-…

For just general internet and basic tasks, highly unlikely to notice.

          • +4

@dstar012: If you are spending over $1.5k: in the case of m2, I am expecting a better machine. I can do basic tasks on cheap androids. That’s my 2 cents. Also if you don’t need the latest the m1 is a perfect machine and you save money. I have had one since January 2021 and it’s a great laptop.

            • +1

@fozzie: It's better to get m2 unless the budget is really tight. There are minor improvements (faster CPU, GPU, better video hardware acceleration, newer WiFi, Bluetooth, Magsafe). The SSD issue has been blown out of proportion. The USB 3.2 deficiency on m1 isn't ideal.

As an owner of a m1, I have a different view and recommend people to go for m2 now.

    • +1

      Fiction.

    • +2

I'm not sure id pay $200 more for an M2 air tbh. Not much difference between the two

      • -1

Faster processor, upgraded screen, magsafe charging, better audio, extra graphics core, better resale. Only downsides are higher cost and slower ssd read/write.

        • +2

Better audio is false as confirmed by several reviewers. The speakers that fire onto the screen as opposed to firing into the air like the M1 makes it sound less clear and has less soundstage. Tested this at the Apple Store and it’s true. M1 has more clarity and spatial quality. M2 is slightly louder but the sound quality is sacrificed.

        • M2 isn't worth the extra money.

      • +1

While the m1 is enough, if you got the cash grab the m2. I prefer the design, and it’s slightly larger being a 13.6 inch device

      • +1

M2 will be supported longer than the M1. It might be worth the difference to some people… because as we know Apple - Once it's out of support, it basically becomes paperweight.

    • what if you only need an M1 lol?

  • Would this be any good for basic video editing? Like 5 to 8 minute YouTube videos?
Currently using a Samsung mobile and would just like to move forward.

    • +12

That’s cheaper than the apple education price. And is still a current model. Yes overpriced, but that’s apple. Considering it will last you many years, with not many problems , I would always buy over a windows laptop.

      • +8

I did try to resist apple in the past, but I have spent money for kids windows laptops and their quality wasn’t great (I bought a over $1000 laptop and it started having problem after a year or so) So last time one of my children needed a new laptop I bought a 2014 MacBook Air (that was nearly 2 years ago), second hand for $200ish from cash converters. Only problem we have had has been the battery, which I replaced by myself.
Newer models are harder to replace the battery though. My daughter is going to uni next year, but she said it’s still ok to use the old 2014 air (only word; school work and usual web browsing). I think it’s impressive for such an old laptop to still work that well, despite it’s daily usage and age.

        • Their software is good. I'd even say it's great! But the hardware, not so much

          • +1

@teddiebear: I’m still using my 2016 MacBook 12 and have been waiting for it to become unusable before I upgrade but have been waiting for at least a couple of years while newer models are released,
I’m very tempted by the Mabook Air 15 but I’ll probably wait for a sale?

            • @JTTheMan: My colleague has the same Mac as yours. Her battery died and she’s just replacing it at apple lol. She said it still works fine, why should I spend over $1000 when I can spend $409?
I don’t know if I totally agree, $400 for a battery is way too much imo.

              • +1

@fozzie: $400 for a battery that's outrageous. Take it to a computer repair store, I only charge half that for batteries. The 2016 model is a bit tricky to switch out as Apple want to make it a pain for users to DIY but it's not $400 tricky.

        • Anecdotal evidence like that means jack, like what does that even mean that your daughter is fine with a 2014 air?

For instance my friend uses a Sony Vaio F from 2015 still on the original battery and on the same Win8.1 install, for Uni (Word, PDF, browsing, life admin). It was only $800 at that time and there's been zero maintenance done. But it's not something I'd use as evidence on how good it is just because my friend can cope with that.

          • @plmko: It’s not just my child’s laptop. I also have used macs through work and never had a problem. Same for my current m1 air (owned for 2.5 years).

          • +1

@plmko: 2013-2017 air were pretty reliable, SSDs in them are good but 4gb ram models might struggle if you try to use Chrome instead of Safari. If you have an 8gb model I'd imagine they're still pretty usable for web browsing.

            • @Agret: She owns a 4gb one, not sure if she used chrome or safari. She also plays a lot of Roblox on it lol.

              • +1

@fozzie: 4GB of RAM in 2023? I'm calling Child Protective Services.

                • @oshkoshjosh4: Ahha, she only uses for school work, YouTube and usual stuff 16 years old do. I did ask her if she wanted to upgrade but she’s happy with it (I replaced the battery by myself and easy in 2014 model). Might get her an iPad for uni when she goes next year.

          • @plmko: Your friend has a unicorn 🦄

        • +1

Uni students like to use iPad with Apple pencil.

Just watch all the tic toc videos. Some claim it improved their grades

          • @sal78: Good point, my oldest is first year at uni and has both laptop and iPad. I’ll ask her which one would be better for her sibling.

    • +2

Considering HN is selling these at the cheapest right now, your latter argument has no legs.

      • -3

OH NO!! I HAVE NO LEEEEGS! NOOOO! Lmao

        • +1

          Don't patronise yourself

    • +2

Best in class performance, build quality and battery life = bad, apparently.

      • -3

        Love watching apple fans cry

        • +3

          Are they crying though?

The main people who are upset seem to be having an emotional response based on their dislike of Apple rather than relying on anything factual.

Post some benchmarks or alternatives and tell us why they're better or in what cases they're better. If you can't, maybe you are the one having a cry

    • +1

      Bruh.

  • -3

hey are desperate to get rid of these lol, don't fall for it. it only has 8gb of ram, if you don't want you sdd to wear out quicky don't get this model.

    • +1

      Define quickly

      • depends on your usage and what kind of work you do on your laptop. Video editing for example on a daily basis on the go will be about 2 years, from testing compared to the 16gb model that runs faster and alot less writes to the ssd. Even with an external drive, it will depend on the demand of the video editing software where it will start using the paging file on the ssd. If all you do is watch videos and play games and do basically F all on your laptop then the 8gb version will last you at least 3 or 4 years or more.

    • +2

8gb is fine for MBA workflows. If you need a laptop that needs 16gb get the MBP.

  • +3

Would 8gb ram be enough to open 20 tabs on chrome + outlook?

    • Would like to know as well

      • Depending on the tabs, but yeah it's fine.

    • yes works perfectly fine great machine, if you can afford try and find 16gb model.

    • +2

I am using exactly same model macbook air (8gb ram) now. I have 7 different chrome windows opened with 22,20,20,7,6,6 and 3 tabs on each without issues. In addition, I have also 5 pdf files, 2 word docs, 2 excel files, one note, note and 2 messaging apps opened. 8gb memory is surprisingly sufficient with basic tasks. My partner has M2 macbook air and honestly I can't tell much different in performance for daily tasks between M1 and M2 macbook air so I would say M1 macbook air is still a good buy

      • +3

You’re still trying for tay tay tickets aren’t you. Don’t give up. (Sold out though hehe)

      • -1

Check your SWAP, you're likely raping your SSD.

    • +1

Depends, one tab of rich content webpage like Facebook or Instagram will use much more RAM than a text only webpage. Use Chrome task Manager to check the actual RAM usage.

    • Yes. Not an issue. Have opened 40+ tabs

  • -1

The inferior qualities of the M2 are its speakers and notch.

Speakers lose spatial sound stage due to its speakers firing onto the screen (sounds are vibrations so partly absorbed by the screen). Go to the Apple Store and you’ll hear the difference.

Notch means less room on the menu bar. Only an issue if you use lots of menu bars icons.

  • Wish you could still boot camp these, love the device, hate the OS, especially parallels!

  • Never used MacBook. Does this laptop comes with its own version of document editor.? Like Windows laptop has MS office

    • +2

Yes you get Apple Pages (Word), Sheets(Excel) & KeyNote(PowerPoint) included for free.

You can use Microsoft Office on Mac too, if you know anyone using office 365 that would download fine into the Mac.

You can also use Google Docs or Microsoft Word Online (via OneDrive) for free cloud document editing.

      • Thank @Agret for the information

  • Go to https://www.apple.com/au_edu_5000447/shop/buy-mac/macbook-ai…
    Price = $1,294.70
Get 10% off (sort of) via bonus Flybuys deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/785042
    Price = $1,165.23

  • I've gone off the Apple OS, its a bit too restrictive for me and cant boot camp anymore. Any thoughts on a windows equivalent in the same form factor? I know theres the Surface but not after tablet. HP Dragonflys etc are a lot more expensive, especially with SSD. Something the same price, performance and form factor would work for me if it ran Windows
