how to use digital credit card at ALDI?

    • +2

See here. Just add it to your mobile wallet and tap at checkout as normal.

      In-store:

Go to the wallet app on your mobile device (Apple, Google and Samsung Wallet supported)
      Click on the plus icon
Select Debit or Credit card on the next screen
Enter the activated card details. Your card has now been added to your mobile wallet
Tap your phone to pay. Your payment should be processed as a debit/credit card payment, and not a gift card payment.
If the value of the purchase is more than the amount of the card, you can supplement the additional value with cash or another payment method that is accepted by the store.

      • Thanks! DOH I totally forgot about those 'Pay' from phone.

      A couple of extra points:

      • You will need to pay the 0.5% payment surcharge when using the gift card in this deal, because the prepaid gift card in this deal only supports the Visa network, and ALDI surcharges any payments routed through the Visa network. If you are wanting to redeem only $100 from the prepaid gift card in this deal (as an example), you need to tell the ALDI checkout person you only want to redeem $99.50 from a Visa card, as the checkout adds the payment surcharge after you tap your device (or if you swipe/insert a card, select CR). If you are at an ALDI self checkout, I believe you will need to make sure your purchase is less than or equal to $99.50.

      • AFAIK, ALDI cannot do split payments between multiple Visa/Mastercard/eftpos cards. Last time I asked an ALDI staff member about this, they said they could only do split payments between one Visa/Mastercard/eftpos card + cash. I am not sure how the redemption of ALDI gift cards is handled, so don’t ask me how split payments involving an ALDI gift card works. (I am currently over 700km from the nearest ALDI, so I am not exactly in a position to travel to an ALDI to find out…)

yeah, will need to go spend the last bit at WW/Coles

      • +2

Sounds like too much of a hassle to be honest for a few bucks/per cent but good write up.

      • +1

I have asked Aldi staff about Aldi gift cards before and the answer was that you can split a payment across an Aldi gift card and Visa/MC/Eftpos card or you can use Aldi gift cards + cash. I am not sure however if you could use 2 Aldi gift cards in the same transaction.

  • Can these cards be printed and used without adding to an ewallet?

    • +2

The gift card in this deal operates on the Visa network, so the only way that would be possible in-person at a merchant is via MOTO (mail order / telephone order). I am not sure how likely it is you would be able to get a merchant to process something via MOTO, but all my attempts have failed.

  • could you use this at Costco ?

    • +3

      Doubt it.

Costco should use MCC 5300 (Wholesale Clubs) in the warehouse and MCC 5542 (Fuel Dispenser, Automated) at their service stations. Neither are listed as whitelisted MCCs, so I would expect Blackhawk Network (the gift card issuer) to decline this gift card in-person at Costco.

I am not sure what MCC is assigned to Costco’s website, but is probably MCC 5300 too.

The reason I am not saying “it definitely does not work at Costco” is that I have not actually tested this myself. There is a remote chance Blackhawk Network have stuffed up their whitelist for this gift card and accidentally included MCC 5300 for this gift card. Blackhawk Network stuffed up last year when they accidentally included MCC 5311 (Department Stores) on the whitelist for OnlyONE Visa Home Improvement gift cards, which meant that a lot of people were able to purchase items from eBay and some gift cards from Shopback (which both use MCC 5311) using a gift card that was accidentally discounted by 10% at Woolworths before it was thoroughly OzBargained and Blackhawk Network closed the loophole.

  • yeah nah

  • Thanks OP.

Gift card worked at local fruit and veg shop as well (surprisingly).

    • +1

Has worked at two such shops for me too.

  • 5% off at Aldi, worth it I suppose.

  • Can you use these to pay for giftcards at Colesworth?

    • Paging @WookieMonster 😇

    • +1

      Probably.

I am not aware of Coles’ checkouts blocking these Visa gift cards as a payment method for gift cards in their stores. However, you could always have a staff member refuse to process a payment from this Visa gift card if they realise it is a prepaid gift card.

At Woolworths, I would expect to see it being automatically blocked from purchasing gift cards issued by Woolworths Group (e.g. WISH, Woolworths, Dan Murphy’s), as well as open-loop gift cards (e.g. Activ Visa gift cards, Perfect eftpos gift cards). I would be surprised if Woolworths automatically blocked you from using it to pay for other types of gift cards (e.g. Apple, Ultimate, TCN). As with before, you could always have a staff member refuse to process a payment from this Visa gift card if they realise it is a prepaid gift card.

Having said all of that, I would expect Blackhawk Network to implement redemption restrictions for the Visa gift card in this deal at supermarkets, because they implement redemption restrictions at supermarkets on other types of Activ Visa gift cards (e.g. Activ Visa Balloons gift card, Activ Visa Green gift card, Activ Visa Mother’s Day gift card, Officeworks Visa gift card). You can read more about it here, but in summary, you will see an Declined - Invalid Transaction (aka error code 12) on the EFTPOS terminal if you exceed their redemption restrictions. My thinking is that Blackhawk Network hates it when people using their open-loop gift cards to pay for gift cards, as it results in money being spent really really quickly. I mean, the physical packaging for Activ Visa gift cards manufactured in December 2022 says on the back in large writing Cannot be used to pay for Gift Cards.

  • Can you use this to buy discount wws gifcard?

    • Two people already tried and it did not work.

My hunch is that Woolworths is rejecting the gift card, not Blackhawk Network. Woolworths tends to do that when you try to use a prepaid gift card on their online gift card portal.

      • Woolworths allows other prepaid cards, so it could be one of two issues:

        1) The MCC used on the gift card portal doesn't fall strictly under one of the categories offered by the giftcard (ie. it might not be 'groceries')
        2) Woolworths might be targeting the specific Shopback supermarket gift card number range because they know you can double dip

Something leans me more towards 1, I know that when using PayPal in the Woolies GC portal, the MCC that charges your card appears as something like "Gift cards", but when paying directly it's something different again.

        • +1

Woolworths allows some other prepaid cards as a payment method.

          • Good luck trying to use a Coles Gift Mastercard or a Coles Mastercard gift card or a Vanilla Visa gift card or an OnlyONE Visa gift card as a payment method. Those are known to be blocked by Woolworths Group on their gift card portal.

          • Officially speaking, Woolworths Group does not accept prepaid cards on their gift card portal. I was verbally told this over the phone by the gift card team, and someone else was told this in an email. However, some prepaid cards will sneak through.

The MCC on the Woolworths Group gift card portal is MCC 5411 (Grocery Stores, Supermarkets). I just tested this myself with a prepaid card that works on the gift card portal (TCN Grocery gift card), and the MCC reported for that transaction showed up as MCC 5411.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Thanks for the info! In that case, it seems more likely that Woolies are blocking the Blackhawk gift cards.

        • The MCC was supermarket back when we were all using that debit card that gives 5% back on supermarket spend (amongst other things) - can't quite remember the name of it

  • Reported - Deal is still going and not expired yet. I just bought and got 2 x $5 including Westpac bonus. Will expire on 18 July. 370 claimed only out of 1000

    • How long did it take for the challenge to update?

Bought a few hours ago with Westpac card and challenge is still pending.

      • In about 1 hour 40 mins. Hope you got yours

    • Only one per account though?

      • Yes
