2.5% Cashback on ShopBack Supermarket Visa Gift Cards (Usable at Any Major Supermarket Nationwide) @ ShopBack

304

Hey there OzB, just wanted to call out our new Supermarket Gift Card launching today that can be used at any major supermarket, to get you 2.5% Cashback on all your grocery needs. These cards can be used online and in-store, so however you shop you can get your value back in your pocket. I'll drop info below on how this works, let me know any other q's and I'll do my best to help out!

HOW TO ACTIVATE

  1. Click “See Voucher” to start the process
  2. Fill in your details on the eGift activation page
  3. Click ‘I accept these Terms and Conditions’
  4. Scroll down to see activated card details

TO USE THE CARD

Online:

  • Enter the required information on the checkout page in the debit/credit card section (not Gift Card section).
  • Please note that online merchants cannot perform split payments, so the amount of the purchase needs to be less or equal to the value of the card. If the price of the item(s) is more than the value of the card, the transaction will decline.

In-store:

  1. Go to the wallet app on your mobile device (Apple, Google and Samsung Wallet supported)
  2. Click on the plus icon
  3. Select Debit or Credit card on the next screen
  4. Enter the activated card details. Your card has now been added to your mobile wallet
  5. Tap your phone to pay. Your payment should be processed as a debit/credit card payment, and not a gift card payment.
If the value of the purchase is more than the amount of the card, you can supplement the additional value with cash or another payment method that is accepted by the store.

GYB's Notes

  • Certain stores may not have functionality for these.
  • This card is restricted and can only be used at the following merchant category locations: Grocery Stores & Supermarkets (5411), Frozen Meats, Seafood (5422), Candy, Nut, Confectionery Stores (5441), Cheese Shops (5451), Pastry Shops (5462), Miscellaneous Food Stores (5499). The Merchant Category Code (MCC) identifies the type of service a business provides. If the MCC listed above does not match the retailer’s category, then the transaction will decline.

Oh wow, but why not more discount? With present offers like from Prezzee it is compared very lame. $10 extra gift card for $150 footy card can be swapped for over 400 retailers. Even with reward systems from NRMA (free blue membership) or Life rewards via Bupa etc. gives 4% on Woolworths gift cards any day as immediate discount!

    • +3

      Because "Shopback reasons".

      • Profit?

    • Just shit on this deal without reading the finer details why don't you?

      Hint

  • +5

Can I use it at Coles to purchase TCN or Ultimate Gift Cards?

    • +3

      Would be useful to know.

    • I can't see why not. Coles would use MCC 5411 and it's just a Visa card (prepaid I assume).

    • +3

I am not aware of Coles’ checkouts automatically rejecting Activ Visa gift cards, but you may get a staff member who sees you are using a prepaid gift card as a payment method for gift cards and stops you from completing the purchase.

However, Blackhawk Network currently enforces redemption restrictions on Activ Visa gift cards at supermarkets and I would expect the gift card in this deal to also have those restrictions too.

      • @WookieMonster I used this Supermarket gc to purchase Ultimate and Myer gc at Coles stores last month.
Do you know if it will also work for Coles MasterCard gc in Flybuys offer next week?

        • +2

I don’t think Coles would block you from using the ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift card to pay for a Coles Mastercard gift card.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Thanks, except ShopBack has blocked me after 3 transactions with Coles MC gc for the week

        • +2

The denominations suck. You'll need a $200 supermarket card to pay for a $105 Coles Mastercard. You'll then have $95 left over on the supermarket card.

          • @capslock: If you use a cash machine you can put in $5 cash and then use $100 from the card.
Are we confident that these cards are going to work?

            • @Yola: Instead of cash, can $5 be paid with a different card?
Don't know if anyone here has bought Coles MC gc with these cards

              • @trixieb: I don't believe you can at self-checkout. This is the only split payment you can make. Someone mentioned that they have purchased the ultimate card with this one.

                • +1

@Yola: I bought Ultimate and Myer gc at self-checkout without split payment, with the Supermarket gc last month

      • +1

I had one bad exp as "a staff member who sees you are using a prepaid gift card", that's because I was using TCN grocery and it's too clearly showing "gift card" name on wallet photo then the rude lazy just protected her tap machine. alright I didn't dispute just moved to next Coles in 10mins driving then bought MC cards there.

        • +1

These deals seem to bring out the worst in some Coles staff. Usually middle-aged women. The young ones don't care.

  • +3

Can I use it at Woolworths to purchase gift cards?

    • +1

I know you cannot use other types of Activ Visa gift cards (e.g. regular Activ Visa gift cards, Activ Visa Petrol & Auto gift cards, Activ Visa Luxury gift cards, Activ Visa Flowers gift cards) to purchase some gift cards at Woolworths, as Woolworths’ checkouts automatically block you. You can read about the restrictions I know about here. However, with Woolworths, the two big unknowns for me are:

      • Whether Woolworths has expanded its restrictions on the usage of Activ Visa gift cards since I last tried. I have not really tried to use Activ Visa gift cards at Woolworths to pay for gift cards since the end of 2022.

      • Whether the specific gift card in this deal is affected by the same restrictions, because there is a good chance it uses different card numbers to what Woolworths is aware of.

However, Blackhawk Network currently enforces redemption restrictions on Activ Visa gift cards at supermarkets and I would expect the gift card in this deal to also have those restrictions too.

      • +3

Just worked at Woolies for me. Bought an Ultimate Home $100 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/782511) for $90 with it.

      • +1

It may be possible to buy eGC via Woolworths online giftcard portal, extra 2.5% on top of the existing discount.

        Report below suggested no.

  • +14

The one thing that the OP has neglected to mention is that Blackhawk Network (the owner/operator of the Activ Visa gift card scheme) has implemented spending restrictions at supermarkets on Activ Visa gift cards, and I presume this includes the gift card in this deal, because the gift card in this deal appears to be a re-branded Activ Visa gift card.

    In summary:

    • You cannot redeem more than $400 from a single Activ Visa gift card at any supermarkets each day. For example, if I have a $500 Activ Visa gift card and go to one store and redeem $300 from it, if I go to a second store on the same day and attempt to redeem the remaining $200, the transaction will be declined with error code 12 (Invalid Transaction).

    • You may not be able to redeem more than one Activ Visa gift card within an approximately ten minute window at the same location. I have previously been able to redeem $200 and $50 Activ Visa gift cards at the same Coles store within seconds of each other, but I have not been able to redeem $200 and $250 Activ Visa gift cards at the same Coles store within seconds of each other.

These restrictions also cover Perfect eftpos gift cards and OnlyONE Visa gift cards. For example, if you are able to redeem $200 from a Perfect eftpos gift card at a Coles and then try to redeem $250 from an Activ Visa gift card at the same Coles a few seconds later, the Activ Visa gift card should be declined.

    • +1

You may not be able to redeem more than one Activ Visa gift card within an approximately ten minute window at the same location.

So if someone else just used one at that location I might have to wait ~10 minutes before I can pay for my groceries?

      • +4

That’s right. Let’s hope there are not a lot of people in your area who use Activ Visa gift cards or Perfect eftpos gift cards or OnlyONE Visa gift cards at supermarkets.

Btw, approximately is the key word there.

        • I have not been able to test whether it is a 5 minute window or 10 minute window, but speaking to a couple of people who are bigger users of Blackhawk Network’s gift cards than me, they have indicated it is closer to 10 minutes.

        • In my experience, I once redeemed $230 from a Perfect eftpos gift card at a Coles, but when I waited 3 minutes before I tried to redeem another $460 from an Activ Visa gift card at the same store (but different checkout), it was declined by Blackhawk Network.

        • +2

I tried after 3 and it failed. Tried again after 12 for success.
I bought three $100 Ultimate Home with a $300 ShopBack Supermarket card at the self service - all good. Went to an operator checkout to buy another three $100 Ultimate Home with a second $300 ShopBack Supermarket and it failed. Went to the chemist and came back to the operator terminal and it worked. My wife said that’s embarrassing but I don’t care, got $690 of cards for $585. That’s 15.22% off

          • @rpb: Well done. Don't listen to your wife. Next time go without her, less stressful. Others just do not appreciate our ways.

            • @Yola: Haha I actually went separately and bumped into her at the operator checkout (because it is next to the hand sanitiser and she was finished).

        • This looks like a ridiculous restriction across cards and customers…this is making me nervous to buy this as who knows how many people in Coles are using this network's card!??

  • +5

HSBC 2% everyday everywhere that takes PayPass, and we do not need to worry about forgetting to use or limited usage. I think ozb is not easily impressed with 0.5% savings, unless op can provide us ways to double/triple dip

  • +3

not worth the effort for 2.5%

    • +2

Yes, just buy woolies GC via free NRMA blue membership, life rewards etc. Lots of options and even instant discounts (4%) without any hassle. Easy Peasy!

  • +1

Cool but appears to be technical limitations and usages commented above to be worth such miniscule yield

  • May work in smaller supermarkets e.g. Asian?

    • Usable at Any Major Supermarket Nationwide

I'm guessing no, unless they are a chain of stores?

    • +1

It depends on whether the EFTPOS terminals at the smaller supermarket have been assigned MCC 5411 (or some other MCC that is permitted in this deal).

The OzBargain community did a great job last year at reporting which small supermarkets used MCC 5411 or MCC 5499 as part of a 5% cashback deal through Hiver. My suggestion is you have a look at this forum post and see if one of your local small supermarkets is listed there.

The one caveat is that MCCs can change over time, so I cannot guarantee the accuracy of the information in that forum post, but it should be a good starting point for you.

  • 2.5%!!! Thanks!

  • +2

Can this be used at ALDI? Would ALDI charge their $0.5% surcharge?

Macquarie Marketplace has 3% off for Coles and 4% for Woolies.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/57482

    • +2

Can this be used at ALDI?

Yes, because they use MCC 5411.

However, Blackhawk Network enforces redemption restrictions on other Activ Visa gift cards at supermarkets, so I would expext the rebranded Activ Visa gift card in this deal to also be affected by those restrictions.

Would ALDI charge their $0.5% surcharge?

      Yes.

Activ Visa gift cards only support the Visa network, and any payments routed through the Visa network will attract the 0.5% surcharge at ALDI.

      • +4

Thank you! Am gonna +1 this deal as I think there's honestly almost no other similar discounts available for ALDI.

I think this works out to 2.013% saving at ALDI, as you would technically save 2% of the 0.5% surcharge.

      • When does ALDI actually charge the 0.5%? For Visa cards only and not mastercards?

        • +1

For contactless purchases and credit cards. Visa is mentioned as this deal is a Visa card.

What forms of payment are accepted at ALDI stores?
We welcome cash, EFTPOS, ALDI Branded Gift Cards and other qualifying Gift Cards. Gift Cards cannot be used to purchase other Gift Cards.
We also accept all major credit cards, except American Express and Diners Club. Please note, however, that there is a 0.5% surcharge on all credit card purchases to cover the cost of the service.
Why does ALDI charge a credit card surcharge?
ALDI offers Visa and MasterCard as payment methods for customers, as well as contactless transactions, however there are very high costs associated with accepting these cards. Rather than ALDI inflating prices across the board to compensate for the credit card acceptance costs (like most of the retailers do) ALDI instead allows customers to make the choice as to the payment method they prefer. This allows customers who choose the lower cost method of payment, to receive the direct benefit by way of lower prices.

          • @inherentchoice:

however there are very high costs associated with accepting these cards

            cough bullsh!t cough
Ahem… cool story ALDI. Needs more unicorns.

        • +6

ALDI charges a 0.5% surcharge for any payments routed through the Visa or Mastercard networks.

Whether ALDI routes your payment through the Visa or Mastercard networks depends on a number of factors. For example:

          • If you present a card that only supports Visa or Mastercard (e.g. a Visa / Mastercard credit card), you will pay the surcharge.

          • If you tap a physical dual-network card on the NFC reader of the EFTPOS terminal, it is a mystery as to whether your payment will be routed through eftpos or Visa/Mastercard. The default for such tap payments would be Visa/Mastercard, but I have heard of cases where tapping some physical dual-network cards at ALDI will see it default to eftpos instead.

          • If you insert or swipe a card on an ALDI EFTPOS terminal, you can choose between eftpos (SAV), eftpos (CHQ) and Visa/Mastercard (CR). If - for example - you present a physical dual-network card and you choose SAV or CHQ, your payment will not attract the 0.5% surcharge. If you choose CR, you will get a warning message saying you will have to pay a 0.5% surcharge.

          • If you tap a card saved to a mobile wallet, the network the payment will be routed through will depend on what you chose on your device… assuming you could choose in the first place. For example, if you have a Westpac Debit Mastercard added to Apple Pay, you can choose on Apple Pay between eftpos and Mastercard before you tap your device against the EFTPOS terminal. If you have an ING debit card added to Apple Pay, all payments will go through the Visa network, because ING only supports Visa payments via Apple Pay.

          I hope that makes sense…

      • Hey Wookie,

Just to clarify (and assuming this all works without restrictions):
If I had a $100 SB Supermarket gift card, would I be able to use it to purchase a $100 ALDI gift card instore? Or would I only be able to buy $99.50 due to surcharge?

        Thanks 😊

        • +2

You will not be able to purchase a $100 ALDI gift card using a $100 ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift card. As soon as you tap your mobile device against the EFTPOS terminal, the ALDI EFTPOS terminal will realise your Visa gift card can only be processed through the Visa network, so it will apply the 0.5% surcharge and then attempt to charge $100.50 to your Visa gift card.

However, you should be fine to purchase a $99.51 ALDI gift card using a $100 ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift card, as ALDI should apply a $0.49 surcharge, which would then push your total spend to $100. (In my experience, ALDI calculates their surcharge in a weird way; for example, when I purchased 2x $100 Westfield eftpos gift cards using 1x $250 Coles Mastercard gift card during this deal, ALDI rounded the surcharge down from $0.9595 to $0.95.)

    • inherentchoice, as far as i know, the Macquarie offer only works in store for Coles, since i don't think they accept gift cards online.

  • +2

This seems good for shopping at Coles. I normally buy Super Swap gift cards and swap them for Coles whenever I shop there. They only give 2% cashback so these give a slightly better return than those.

Are there any higher discounted gift cards that we can buy for shopping at Coles?

    • +1

I get Coles gc via HCF at 3% discount, if you have the lifestyle rewards, I think you can get at 4% discount - check the discounted gc page.

    • +2

My comment directly above mentioned 3% via Macquarie Marketplace. Huge marketplace with discounted cards for various retailers. Personally I just buy the gift card on their phone App when in the store, and it's instantaneous. Can choose a custom amount for the value of your shopping purchases. However, my comment above provided wrong link. Here is the correct link:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/574828

    • Yep good for Coles but doesn't stop the OzBitches negging this post because they can get their precious Woolies cards elsewhere.

  • If you use this at ALDI, what happens when you buy an amount that exceeds the card amount? Ie. you buy $110 worth of things and your giftcard is only $100? Does ALDI support multiple payments? So I can pay the remaining $10 via my bank card?

    • +1

As far as I know, ALDI never allows split payments (across multiple cards)…. yeah, annoying. Does anyone know WHY ALDI doesn't allow split payments?

Also, as mentioned above, when you pay with a credit card, a 0.5% surcharge is automatically added to whatever "Total" the cashier tells you. So, if the till total is $110, you'll be charged $110.55. (Of course, you can avoid the 55 cents surcharge by paying cash or using a debit card instead.)

      • +1

Likely to do with merchant fees.

Merchant fees is based on a small percentage PLUS a fixed amount.

If you put through multiple cards, their fees go up ever so slightly based on the fixed amount.

    • +2

I have been told in the past by ALDI staff that the only type of split payments possible at ALDI is one card + cash… but that was a while ago and was before I noticed ALDI selling ALDI gift cards.

I am not sure whether you can split payments in other ways nowadays (e.g. one card, one ALDI gift card), but I would be surprised if ALDI started allowing split payments across multiple Visa/Mastercard/eftpos cards.

  • bought one to support GYB :)

anyone succeeded to add card to apple wallet? got error "invalid card", may try again later.

    • Weird, definitely let me know if you have issues that continue, happy to take a look at this mate!

      • seems my phone issue, added on wife's so gift for her :)

    • Mine added to Apple wallet fine :)
Will try it in a bit

  • +1

@GYB Will this be the standard cash back for this product or is this a launch promotion?

    • +1

Hey mate! Yeah that's the standard Cashback, so we'll have it upsized from here but 2.5% is the base rate :)

  • +1

What's the best way to track your balance with these cards? Do the wallet apps that you add them to track the balance for you?

    • On Samsung Wallet, I use the Add Card Memo feature to manually track the balance and the card’s PIN.

On Apple Pay and Google Wallet, I cannot find a way to add notes or memos to payment cards stored on there, so I think the balances for any Activ Visa gift cards would need to be tracked manually elsewhere.

EDIT: as GYB has already pointed out, there is no way you can get Apple Pay, Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet to automatically obtain the available balance for you. I have never heard of a mobile wallet being able to obtain the available balance of a debit or credit card (or Activ Visa gift cards), and I suspect that is due to security reasons.

    • Hey mate, you can check the balance at any time here, I don't believe wallet apps fully tracks the remaining balance but will track amounts you've spent/previous transactions so you will have an indication of what's left there based on that as well.

      • +1

Hey GYB, please check your PMs :)

      • that link doesn't work, how do we check the balance now?

  • +2

There must be some way to giftception this, otherwise I'm not overly enthused.

    • ;)

  • +1

Woolworths periodically sell their Woolies store gift cards with 5% added value through their website (e.g. purchase $100 get $105 value, approximately 4.76% discount). I know that gift card purchases through Woolworths online are processed through the MC5411 code.

I wonder if these gift card could be used in this instance for additional discount?

    • +5

tested no luck, also couldn't add to paypal.

      • +1

Thanks! Not being able to add to Paypal is useful to know.

    • +3

Yeah I tried too and it just errored out and told me to call for assistance.

      • Thank you.

      • OK, thanks for the report. TCN Grocery worked directly for me last time.

        • +1

think they are different, TCN's better.
this supermarket card seems Ultimate group.

        • Can anyone confirm if you can still purchase TCN grocery card with this?

          • @JHoliday: No recent purchase

          • +1

@JHoliday: TCN Grocery worked for me to purchase 5% bonus eGC today. Probably the best time to use it (if have no access to senior citizen benefits).

  • -2

Can I pay my builder with these?

  • +3

I feel as though I sort of ruined this deal earlier today, so here is a little tip for anyone who likes to make purchases at 7-Eleven.

7-Eleven convenience stores that do not sell fuel (e.g. inner-city convenience stores) should use MCC 5499. That means that if you purchase a 7-Eleven gift card there using the gift card in this deal as a payment method, you can then use that 7-Eleven gift card to pay for fuel at 7-Eleven service stations. That is handy for you helicopter pilots out there, especially since you cannot find 7-Eleven gift cards on discounted gift card portals.

On the other hand, 7-Eleven convenience stores attached to 7-Eleven service stations should use MCC 5541 (and therefore be ineligible for this deal).

I know this tip is not ideal for everyone, especially if you don’t normally pass through a 7-Eleven that does not sell fuel, but hopefully this tip helps at least one person.

    • nice, will give this a go

  • $5 bonus cashback challenge on this now, for those following. Must pay by Westpac card.

  • +1

Gift card worked at local fruit and veg shop as well (surprisingly).

    • +1

Yes, also worked for me at a fruit and veg shop.

  • +1

Did not work at Coles online. But then even Coles gift cards can't be used at Coles online…

    • -1

Hey mate, sorry to hear of the trouble here! These definitely should work online at Coles, though because online stores don't often allow for split payments and these cards are treated liked debit cards, the total purchase amount does need to be up to/under the amount on the card when shopping online. In store they're able split payments, but not so when it comes to online. Let me know if that's not the issue you've come up to here and I can definitely take a closer look.

  • Bought this two days ago. Couldn’t add to Apple Pay. Checked on balance website and it said activation failed? @gotyourback

    • Hey there mate, definitely seems like an odd one, happy to get our team to take a look into it so shoot me a DM with details.

      • Has DMed you.

      • Hello could you please check your DM?

      • I have also dm you. Bought 2, 2days over, tried on 3 wallet devices and still doesnt work…
