40% off Fender Squiers, 30% off Selected Fender Guitars & Free Delivery @ Fender Music Australia

890

Fender Days.
Just saw on the fender page, they're doing 40% or 30% off their selected models. I recently got the classic vibe 50s strat for nearly the same price but its good they have more stuff available. Also, could someone let me know if Fender has done this before? Would like to know if this is a recurring sale from Fender.

Just flip the strings. If you get into vintage guitars it'll be a lot easier on your wallet.

@oshkoshjosh4: Not that simple. You’ll have to adjust the bridge saddles for each string too, and re-do the intonation for each string. And relocate the strap button. And deal with hitting the controls with your forearm 😂

@lppepper: Plenty of videos on YouTube detailing the whole process, otherwise take it to a guitar tech (quotes online say around $80 to $130 usd). Most of what you listed are relatively quick and easy jobs. If you don't believe me, email a technician and find out for yourself.

If you are serious about playing guitar you need to learn how to do all this stuff anyway.
You can find reasons to do something or reason not to do it… no point picking up a guitar if you're not willing to learn new things

            • @lppepper: Personally I don't like the look of using guitars upside down, plus it can feel unbalanced. Cheapest option I've found is to just accept the industry caters to the larger right handed customer base.

      • how did you do that?

  • +6

Just to clarify, its "up to" the indicated discount. Tested code on two items in the "up to 30%" catagory, and one was 15% off and the other was 20% off

    • Two I tried the 'fender' code on weren't applicable

      • +1

I have a few points, trying to re-ignite my guitar skills after first learning 30 years ago. Firstly, was the discount, it is limited by models included as mentioned above, and very much colour, with some models all but 1 colour is still full price, and 1 odd colour is discounted 15/20/30/40%. Colour makes no difference to playability or sound, but you won't want to keep the guitar if it doesn't tickle your visual senses. On top of that, check against other internet prices, for example Squier contemporary can be found cheaper elsewhere right now than the 40% discount price.

Second point is I have a Squier Classic Vibe bought very recently, and it is not a cheap instrument, the worst thing by far is the guitarist. I bought a Fender Mustang Micro, fret oil and some youtube inspired items adding up to less than $100 and this thing is an absoute joy, and my only other guitar is accoustic and worth probably 6x as much. As a comparison, I burned through a Squier 30 years ago when I first picking up guitar, couldn't wait to get rid of that in the first few months, I'm already settling into this one as something I really want to keep and play.

Third point is quality control. I can't speak for Squier or Fender, but I bought my guitar from visiting a few music shops, I tried guitars from $500-$2500 and kept coming back to the one I bought. Why? It kept impressing me in the sound and playability, it was a fraction of the cost of a lot of guitars I tried, but I couldn't fault it when I played it, nor can I now. Is that the same for all Squiers, especially from the internet, I doubt it.

Also, if you buy well, you'll be out of pocket 10-20% if you decide to sell, if you do well in a sale like this, you may even brean even if you don't like it and sell. But this is the same regardless of where you buy. I bought at the absolute closest store (walking distance) and got a deal that would mean I could quickly distribute on the internet for 10% less and already have had enough play to make that <$100 a good investment.

Finally, putting all of the above together. Squier, Player series, likely Epiphone and some lesser known brands will make some quality instruments that you find joy in playing and want to keep. If you mistake that, try to limit the pain to 10-15% to offload, so think about what people would pay if your a worried about the choice. But the real problem with this deal is not try before you buy, you can get a Squier that sounds amazing, but I'm no certain that's every Squier, and I would personally prefer to pay a little more and make sure I'd played if for 30 minutes in a store and it felt and sounded great to me. Like I said, I tried way more expensive guitars, and pretty quickly put down and eliminated what would be seen as great guitars online, maybe becasue the Squier had so much quality for it's price.

  • No John 5 telecasters and the Haruna telecaster didn't get a discount.

  • My son is interested in making the shift from acoustic to electric. After reviewing YouTube videos with him as to the best way forward we still have no idea. There is a squier kit which a few reviewers seem to think is ok https://derringers.com.au/squier-squier-stratocaster-pack-br… but I’m worried the kit will be a little toy like and he’ll want something better within a short time - does anyone have any experience with these all in one kits, for a serious “student” will the kit be sufficient?

    • sure, there is nothing wrong with it as long as you are going in knowing this is a base grade option. If your son has been playing acoustic for a while and developing skills, and more important is passionate and likely to keep playing then id recommend a different path. You can do better for similar price of that pack. Have a look at Artist guitars website. Id go there for a guitar for him and then when the time is right, and he's still playing, get him a positive grid amp.

    • +7

Better off getting a secondhand guitars on the market. This will be ok but you get more bang for your buck with used gears. There’s plenty of them.

Used amp like Vox Pathfinder will cost $100ish. Used guitar like a Yamaha Pacifica $200. You will have spare money to get a multi-effect pedal too like Pod XT for $150. Those would be a more solid startup kit than this.

And the thing with used gears, you can re-sell it at minimal loss once you’re ready to move on to a better gear.

      • +1

Second the used market. Spend that bit extra and keep in good condition and you'll likely make money.

    • +1

Get the infinity model. Squires a good, have always been good, but now they’re brilliant. The amp is meh. Headphone amps are all the rage these days and can be played through PA systems.

    • +1

To be honest the guitar in that kit will probably feel pretty cheap. Tolerances are poor and we found all models had misaligned screws on the pickguard and just a general low quality feeling. The guitar itself is the low end Bullet model, below the Affinity and Classic Vibe. Amp sounds absolutely awful so likely won’t get any use. Had one for a learner but they very quickly upgraded in only a couple of months

If you’re not too committed or on a tight budget they will still do the trick for a beginner

For a bit more money though I would say the Classic Vibe or Fender Player series (made in mexico or japan) are good beginner to intermediate guitars, can get them $5-600 second hand and build quality is not far off the prized USA built models

Pair with an amp like the katana or spark and you’ll have a killer combo with access to a wide range of tones/styles

    • +1

I'd go second hand. If you wait can get a Mexican built fender for $500 to $600. I'm a fan of Korean built guitars so even a Chapman, old Ibanez RG, Ibanez SZ etc. can be had for $600. Around this price mark there's just so many options. I'd look up reviews and perhaps look at similar guitars in store before purchasing. Also if you have someone who knows about guitar setup (perhaps your son) when you go look at them you will be able to find a nice one.

As a practice amp, if you can afford it try the Spark or a Boss Katana 2. There's a few second hand for around $300. Both play plenty loud and has all the tones you could ever want available to change via a phone app.

    • +2

Squier have lifted their game. And I say that honestly as not at all a Fender fanboy.

I'm an experienced player with more expensive guitars (double digits). I recently opportunity bought a Squier Bullet Tele and was blown away by how good its BQ is for the money. Presumably their starter Bullet Strat is the same. Be aware though, Squier Bullets and Affinitys all have ceramic pickups. He'll be limited by that amp though, and like any kid, want more within a short period.

Personally, If you want a better starter Strat on that kind of budget but which will see him through a few years, rather than a pack, I'd buy an SX SST57 or SST62 from their vintage series and couple it with a 40W practice amp. Those SXs have the BQ, feel and playability of a Squier Classic Vibe, and their pickups although ceramic sound like silk with solid output. You could source and upgrade them with a set of Wilkinson alnicos very inexpensively if and when wanted.

As for an amp. I'd recommend a Blackstar ID:Core 40 V3 for versatility, Fender Champion 40 for simplicity and superb tones, or Boss Katana 50 Mk II for more grunt than the ID:Core if your budget extended there. Presently there are no super deals on the ID:Core, but as Boss introduce their new Katana 50 EX, you can currently pickup a killer price on the older MK II 50.

It really comes down to how much you want to spend.

Do buy your accessories seperately if he hasn't a decent tuner or strap. The pack included ones are rubbish. Most important is a decent quality TS cable.

If you wanted alnico pickups, Yamaha 112V is still the one to beat in value for money terms. Very different guitar in both feel and tone from the Squier Classic Vibe though, and it's HSS.

      GL.

Bro it was a joke. You must be fun at parties…

    • My expereince growing up learning guitar was that I was much more inclined to practice/play with a nicer instrument. It's been a while since I've tried a squire strat, I think it was a bullet and it was ok, but not great. Best bet is to go into a guitar store and let your son play a bunch and see what resonates with him.

    • might as well get that. if you buy/price match at a local, they might put some new strings on and intonate/setup the guitar. had my first new guitar a while back and makes a difference from used. You could also onsell this so not much risk. Could find these sets on gumtree etc in good condition for around half off.

    • My son started with a similar kit. Not a bad way to see if they will go on with it.

Once it was obvious he would continue, he got a better guitar and Amp and we sold the kit.

Oh crap, a 40TH ANNIVERSARY TELECASTER gold edition. Is that buy now ask for forgiveness thing still a good idea?

  • Any recommendation for beginner?

    I want a elec guitar

    • Tele. Nothing more you need. Simple, elegant, and a workhorse.

Edit: Strat is more comfy with the belly cut for a beginner though.

      • they both heavy tho' - I thought my '65 Tele was heavy on a wide strap around my neck at gigs and didn't want to keep doing that

at the same time I shared a Gibson ES335 semi-acoustic - and if I recall it was about the same weight - just larger size

but that was last century when I just missed playing for Debbie Harry - I brushed past her on the narrow stairs she was coming down as I was going up to get some fresh air on the street after our set when I was dying of heat prostration in the hot and sweaty summer basement, and she and her crew were just arriving for a look-see after or before their concert in town. It may have been around the date of the only concert she cancelled due to food poisoning.

now I'm old I just play the Yamaha nylon acoustic I've had for 50 years - for me it's sweet enough and I'd like to think the vibrations from use have mellowed the sound - true or not I'm happy to stick with.

    • Price range? can get a dirt cheap used one for around $50 + $30 amp. $200 to $300 is starter new guitar. Brands like Cort are meant to be good value. Around $200 is also used Squier Strat money. See some 2000's models under $200 regularly.

    • I grew up playing Yamaha Pacifica for years. Great entry level guitar IMO.

      • +1

It's luck of the draw, and you need to be very lucky.

      • And here's the other thing, in my opinion and it's going to sound harsh but there's usually a difference between what customers think is good and what the shop would count as good. I'm talking about the fret dress, where the guitar can actually be set up without fretting out, how well the nut is cut etc. Most people do not really know about this sort of stuff, how to adjust a truss rod etc. The only guitars worse than Fender Mexico that I worked on were Indonesian Jacksons, the QC on those is so bad you can literally see it on the pictures.

        • Just curious, which brands impressed you the most with their quality after doing setups on so many guitars?

          • @Fappo: Japanese Ibanez, US PRS, Suhr, Fender Japan. Value for money it's hard to beat Ibanez Prestige.

            • +1

@ThePojo: Cool. Agreed on the Japan Ibanez's. I was very tempted by an AZ when I tried one a while back. Glad to hear the QC is up to snuff on PRS and Suhr. It damn well ought to be given their price point.

    • That's a shame because they used to be decent Squires can also be a little rough out the box

      • Ironically they're better than the Mexicans Fenders.

  • +1

    Beginner bass? Any advice?

    • +1

Loads of options out there. First decision is standard or short scale. Second preferred neck proifile and fingerboard radius. Lastly pickup config.

For standard scale, FMM can't beat either Yamaha's TRBX174 or Cort's Action Plus. Ibanez gets an honourable mention with their SR200 -similar passive ceramic PJ config to the previous two, but with their gimmicky as it is pointless proprietary Phat II EQ. Cort's Action Plus has a 2 Band Active EQ which is a similar kind of electronic gimmickry to Ibanez's Phat II EQ. I preferred the Yamaha without either.

Short scale at those kind of price points is kinda' limiting with Ibanez's Talman and miKro entry level units hitting a pleasing entry point note.

Squier have a few half decent offerings if attracted to the Fender look and brand, from their short scale basic single proprietary pickup Bronco through various standard scale Affinity PJ or JJ options.

A relative Gumby bassist myself, seeking one last year to learn on and for home studio recording use, I chose Yamaha's TRBX174 and it didn't disappoint. Tone is phenomenal for their OEM passive PUPS, and the BQ and playability truly cuts way above its price point.

All that said, can't go wrong with any of the above really. What you get for the money is remarkable. GL

I wanna try my hand at an electric bass guitar and see if I can get the hang of it. I play rhythm guitar and sing in a band, but we need a bass player and I'm prepared to give it a shot. I'm a woefully slow learner though, so I'm not very confident I will take to it.

If I wanted to buy something I could easily resell and recoup most of my money, are these $899 Squier basses reduced to $539 an outstanding choice? Or am I better to grab something off gumtree for like $100 or something?

  • -3

are these $899 Squier basses reduced to $539 an outstanding choice?

Hard to beat at that price. You'll also want a good bass amp to go with it.

Or am I better to grab something off gumtree

The secondhand market isn't as good as it used to be. People seem to want RRP prices for old junk, and you can never be sure what condition it is in so there potential for a lot of time wasting.

Stick with Yamaha. They make great instruments across the range (Elton John plays a Yamaha piano) and the APX500/600 is the most popular acoustic guitar in the world I believe. Yamaha FG is also a reliable starter acoustic.

      • Wasn't talking trash on yamaha, just my old guitar. :)

There are a lot a good brand offering in that price point. Sigma, Cort, Tanglewood, Alvarez, Takamine. You could also check out Eastman and Mayson.
