Another deal calls for another round of tips…

    • This deal is for all Ultimate gift cards sold at Coles (excluding the variable load denominations).

    • Please be aware that some Coles stores still stock Ultimate (eftpos) gift cards, which are the older version of the Ultimate gift cards pictured in this deal, and I am not actually sure whether the eftpos gift cards would also have bonus value added to its balance through this deal. If you do not know about the differences between the Visa and eftpos versions (and want to know why I would generally avoid the eftpos version anyway), please look here.

    • Ultimate (Visa) gift cards are redeemable instore at some of the participating retailers, redeemable online at some of the participating retailers and can be exchange for some participating retailers' digital gift cards. Please refer to the Ultimate gift card website for more information on how you can redeem them at a particular participating retailer. (For anyone curious to know which participating retailer was added within the last week or so, it was Roblox.)

    • If you want to know what the correct list of participating retailers and redemption options, please look at the Ultimate gift card website. The gift card packaging is not the source of truth for participating retailers, unless you are looking for gift cards redeemable at Supercheap Auto, rebel, BCF or Drummond Golf.

    • The maximum fixed denominations I have seen for Ultimate gift cards sold at Coles recently have been $50 (Eats, Everyone, Gaming & Bites, Kids, Students, Teens, Thanks) and $100 (Active & Wellness, Beauty & Spa, Her, Him, Home, Style/Shopping). I have not seen a Baby & Mum gift card at Coles recently, and I have been to over 15 Coles stores across three states in recent weeks… If you are looking to purchase a very expensive item from a participating retailer (e.g. JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys), it may or may not be possible to use a stack of Ultimate gift cards as the payment method. If you are unsure, feel free to ask and the community will try to help out where it can.

    • No split payments with gift cards in store now?

      • +4

        For Coles:

        • At self checkouts, as soon as you press the Mixed Payments button, you should get an error message saying you need to go to the service desk to complete the purchase. I know that you used to be able to insert cash first, then go back to the payment screen and select Card to pay the remaining amount owed, but someone (not me) recently edited the FAQ to say this is not possible anymore. I have not verified this myself though.

        • At standard checkouts, staff should still be able to do split payments if you are purchasing a gift card, but it is up to the staff member whether they let you do that.

        • Sorry Mr WookieMonster, I mean to stack gift cards to pay in JB Hi-Fi. Why is it?

If you are looking to purchase a very expensive item from a participating retailer (e.g. JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys), it may or may not be possible to use a stack of Ultimate gift cards as the payment method.

          • +4

            @Imposter: Ahh, gotcha!

The vagueness of that statement is due to the following:

            • You cannot redeem more than one Ultimate gift card on an online store of a participating retailer (including JB Hi-Fi).

            • JB Hi-Fi’s instore POS system can handle split payments, but you could always have a JB Hi-Fi staff member unilaterally decide to not allow split payments, especially if you are purchasing a gift card. To be fair, from my experiences (and experiences of others on this website), not allowing split payments is more likely to happen at Officeworks than JB Hi-Fi or The Good Guys, but it is something to be mindful of.

That statement was intended to be a catch-all for all participating retailers, not just JB Hi-Fi. I mean, there is one person on this website who recently used 53 Ultimate gift cards at 99 Bikes.

            • @WookieMonster: Not sure if you noticed but the card network site says this when converting to jbhifi gift cards.

*An unlimited number of Gift Card codes per transaction can be used both instore and online for JB Hi-Fi.

              • +3

@Applause: Yes, but that statement you quoted refers to JB Hi-Fi gift cards, not Ultimate gift cards. I would be really surprised if JB Hi-Fi allowed the redemption of multiple Visa cards on their website, especially since they would be allowing the redemption of multiple Visa cards through card-not-present transactions, increasing their exposure to fraudulent transactions.

The conundrum is that there is no straightforward way to convert an Ultimate gift card into a JB Hi-Fi gift card, which is what causes a lot of headaches. I just checked the Ultimate gift card exchange facility for an Ultimate Home gift card and there were no JB Hi-Fi gift cards on there. You instead have to try your luck purchasing a JB Hi-Fi gift card instore or online from JB Hi-Fi, but it is no guarantee either will work.

          • +1

@Imposter: Just from my experience staff weren't happy about me using 12 giftcards. Said 4 was max. They still put it through but I'm going have to find another Jb if I want to do it again

            • +2

@quill: That kind of thing probably varies by store. I work at JB in a country town and we're all very chill about these gift cards. Maybe they're grumpier in the cities.
The only thing I would recommend to get a good reaction is to be kind to your cashier and have the cards ready to go (out of packaging with PIN revealed) to make the process quicker. We'll usually be happy to put em through and laugh at your extremely long receipt (I think out store record is somewhere around 50 cards for one transaction).

              More tips:
Some of these cards are now made of cardboard and if you crease the magnetic strip they can be a real struggle to swipe, so go gently on them.
The best way to reveal the PIN is like a scratchie ticket, gentle fingernail or coin over the grey part. DO NOT try to peel the grey stuff off; I've had a couple of people lose their PIN that way.

        • +2

I made the edit on the split payments at Coles, after it happened to me and the card only self serve checkout had an existential crisis trying to refund cash that hadn’t been inserted

        • So instead of making mixed payments at checkout, goto bank ATM withdrawal cash and pay in cash at self serve - the banks then get no fees = win-win

      • +1

I’ve used 20+ cards in recent days on JB store, and so many times till date. Only issue is they deny to swap it for JB gift card directly, but swapped for apple GCs with 27 cards, and no issues.
Good thing with Ultimate Gift Cards is you can add them to Apple/Google pay, TCN cards lacks that.

        • I think Apple Wallet only let's you add a maximum of 8 cards. Can you confirm these gift cards counts outside of the 8 somehow?

          • +1

@Jinster: Different iPhones will have different limits to the number of payment cards that can be stored at any one time.

            For example:

            • Any iPhone 7 and older supporting Apple Pay: 8

            • Any iPhone 8 to iPhone X: 12

            • Any iPhone XS and newer: 16

I am not sure about limits for other devices (e.g. Apple Watches)…

        • +1

So can you add ultimate gift card to apple pay and then use to purchase JB gift cards?

          • @youngchinaman: Is the benefit of adding it to Apple/Google Pay that you can just tap to pay and don't need to enter in the PIN?

          • @youngchinaman: That’s the idea.

Whether or not JB Hi-Fi will let you do that is a different question.

            • If you attempt to do this in-store, there is a remote chance that JB Hi-Fi has got around to automatically blocking you from using an Ultimate gift card to pay for a JB Hi-Fi gift card, but I have not heard any reports of that happening. Alternatively, you may have a staff member demand to see what kind of payment method you are trying to use when you ask to pay by card, but that has not happened to me. Some JB Hi-Fi staff really do not like customers using gift cards to purchase gift cards.

            • If you attempt to do this online, there is a higher chance that JB Hi-Fi’s fraud detection system (Riskified) will step in to cancel an order of a JB Hi-Fi gift card paid for with an Ultimate gift card, even if you opt to use Apple Pay as the payment method on the online checkout. If Riskified does not do that straight away, it will only let you purchase two JB Hi-Fi gift cards using two different Ultimate gift cards per calendar day. You can opt to instead directly input the Ultimate gift card’s details into the credit/debit card section of the online checkout, but anecdotally that is more likely to be cancelled than if you go via Apple Pay.

            • @WookieMonster: Thanks I just tried and the first one went through with Apple Pay and then second got rejected right away.

        • As in swapping the Ultimate Gift Card for Apple Gift Card, that's possible to be done in JB-Hifi? What are the amount of Apple gift card do they sell in JB-Hifi?

          • @moredeals: Yep, that should be possible. I did that myself last week. You may get a staff member who is all like you cannot purchase gift cards using gift cards, but as long as you tell the staff member you want to pay by card, you should be fine.

JB Hi-Fi sells $20, $30, $50, $100 and $200 Apple gift cards in their stores. JB Hi-Fi does not sell the variable load denomination for Apple gift cards (which is a denomination you see stocked at other retailers, including Coles, Woolworths and BIG W).

            • @WookieMonster: Thanks WM, is paying by card the only option and not by bringing the physical gift cards?

Pay by card means add the to your mobile wallet and scan multiple times when you checkout?

If i have 11 GC i would need to scan 11 times?

              • @moredeals:

is paying by card the only option and not by bringing the physical gift cards? Pay by card means add the to your mobile wallet and scan multiple times when you checkout?

When you ask to pay by card at a JB Hi-Fi store, you can redeem your Ultimate gift cards in two ways:

                • Swiping the physical gift card on the EFTPOS terminal.

                • Adding the physical gift card to a mobile wallet and then tapping your mobile wallet against the EFTPOS terminal.

You need to be clear and say you want to pay by card (or Visa card). If you instead you want to pay by gift card, the staff member will likely assume you want to use a JB Hi-Fi gift card, and the checkout handles the redemption of JB Hi-Fi gift cards separately to Ultimate (and TCN) gift cards.

The reasons you will see suggestions to add an Ultimate gift card to a mobile wallet are:

                • For Ultimate e-gift cards, the only way you can realistically redeem them at a JB Hi-Fi store is from a mobile wallet.

                • If you purchasing a gift card (especially JB Hi-Fi gift cards), you are more likely to get away with it if you tap a mobile wallet. In my experience, a lot of staff do not care if you swipe a card, but on one occasion, I had a staff member stop a transaction when I swiped an Ultimate gift card and they demanded to see what kind of card I was using. When they realised it was an Ultimate gift card, they went on about how you cannot use gift cards to purchase gift cards, so I left the store empty-handed. I think swiping is such an unusual way to use a card these days that it will catch the attention of some staff members.

If i have 11 GC i would need to scan 11 times?

You will need to tell the staff member you want to redeem multiple cards and tell them the exact amount on each card each time. After you do that, either swipe the physical gift card or tap your mobile wallet.

                • If you swipe the physical gift card, you will need to select CR (so the payment is routed through the Visa network) and then enter the four-digit PIN printed on the back of the gift card.

                • If you tap your mobile wallet, you should not need to enter a PIN (at least for purchases).

                • @WookieMonster: Thanks WM, that's been really helpful and i would know what to do now.

For the $11 x $50 gift card would be $632 with this deal, i would be able to get 620 apple gift card and the rest of the balance i would have to use them on the spot?

    • Thanks. This seems very helpful, I've just a couple of questions…
      - Is there some way to determine the EFTPOS versus the Visa version of these cards? Eg, do the Visa cards have a Visa logo on the packaging?
      - Is there confirmation that the EFTPOS version does not include the 15% bonus?

      • +1

Is there some way to determine the EFTPOS versus the Visa version of these cards? Eg, do the Visa cards have a Visa logo on the packaging?

Have a look at the second table of this FAQ or the link to the photo below that table.

Is there confirmation that the EFTPOS version does not include the 15% bonus?

I have not seen confirmation either way, so I would say it is risky to purchase the eftpos version.

        • Leg(end) - thanks!

For those looking for the information on how to tell the difference between Visa and EFTPOS versions:

There are a number of ways you distinguish between the eftpos and Visa versions, including:

          Feature differences
          Gift card number
          eftpos Starts with 502125
          Visa Starts with 457824

          Card network logos
eftpos logo is printed on the back of the gift card.
Visa logo is not printed anywhere on the packaging nor the gift card.

          Packaging
eftpos Gift card sits on top of the packaging.
Visa Gift card is tucked inside the gift card packaging.

          Participating retailer logos
eftpos version Participating retailer logos are printed on the physical card.
Visa version Participating retailer logos are printed on the packaging. A Where To Use QR code is printed on the front and back of the gift card.

For people who prefer to look at a photo, in, the gift card on the left is the eftpos version and the gift card on the right is the Visa version.

  • What denominations do they stock?

    • +4

Read Wookie’s last point in his above comment.

  • +2

How is the 15% value added? Given gift card value is limited to say $100 do you get $115 in it somehow?

    • +9

Yes, it’ll load the bonus value during the checkout process

      $100 x 1.15 = $115

  • OW price match?

    • +8

      Two problems with suggestion:

      • I have not seen Officeworks stock any Ultimate gift cards for many months now. Back when Officeworks stocked Ultimate gift cards, they only stocked Beauty & Spa, Eats and Thanks gift cards.

      • Even if Officeworks stocked Ultimate gift cards (which would be a bad idea, considering they are now a participating retailer in the Ultimate gift card scheme), their Price Beat Guarantee only covers items that are priced lower at competing retailers. A $100 Ultimate gift card in this deal is still going to cost $100, so Officeworks would argue that Coles (their competitor) is selling identical Ultimate gift cards at the same cost as them. I also highly doubt Officeworks can get a $100 Ultimate gift card to activate with $115 on it…

      • +2

Yes, point 2 is most likely happening.
OW is price beating discounts, but not on the "Extra on top values" or "cashback redemptions".

  • $100 max cards? Is it 5 a day or all up?

I can smash my 2k min spend!

    • +2

I'm very certain it'll depend on the person serving and their store policy
Could be 5 per person or 5 per transaction Regardless you can exit the store and come back in given that you manage to find the cards still in stock or go to a different store

Brownie points if you go to the same staff member with a fake glasses and moustache on

      • Fake glasses with moutache - check.

      • The hangers were all still full, like untouched from a restock, when I went in at lunchtime to my local Coles.

    • It totally depends on the person serving you. The person did 2 sets of 5 X $100.
And went to another Coles, and bought 12 of them at self checkout, easy

  • Does anyone know whether multiple gift card can be used to pay for ROG ally on JB HI FI online?

    • +1
    • +1

Just to add onto WM's FAQ - online for sure not! The max denomination for the ultimate card is $100 and the ROG Ally costs 10x that. JB HiFi updated their terms and conditions back in March 2023 to explicitly disallow purchase of JB Gift cards using ANY gift cards BUT you can surprisingly use any gift card to purchase non-JB gift cards.

But I'll suggest that it'll surely be worth the trouble to buy 13x $100 cards and purchase ROG Ally in store as you're permitted to redeem multiple GCs in store.

      • Depends on staff. I did it once, but I won't be able to do it again, at this particular store so ymmv

        • JB have been cracking down on this as well progressively. It will get harder and harder although not impossible since its a human control not blocked by EFTPOS. But as WM pointed out below, OW have been updating their POS and I suspect JB will get into this soon!

My main hope is to purchase lots of $100 Ultimate gifts cards with my Coles MasterCard cards to then go straight to JB Hi-Fi to buy APPLE gift cards to buy the iPhone 15 Pro Max in September. Basically trying to maximise my discount on the new iPhone by inceptioning my Coles MCs with this deal.

        • Same thought!

What are people's favourite uses for these cards?

    • +4

      EB, JB

    • +4

By far JB is most used with these cards

    • Good Guys to stack when they have huge coupon deals

Officeworks to stack with 5% price beat on grey stock

    • +3

      Subway

    • +1

      Nandos

      • Do you know if these ones can be used online on nando's website or in-app ?

  • I'm guessing the 5 per day limit isn't enforced via Flybuys for Ultimate card deals?

    • +1

      Flybuys not required.

    • While purchasing, there is no way to know whether a card is being loaded with the bonus value or not. So this may be a risk.

      • +1

I guess you can always check the balance right after purchase and dispute with service desk. In my experience, Coles will generally not refund cash for gift card purchases but will try to offer you a replacement Coles gift card worth the actual amount you paid (without any bonus value). This is absolutely unacceptable for me so will hold out buying on Day1 until we get confirmation that this is working at the register lol.

  • What’s the process if you want to buy an item with a total value of more than $115 online using an ultimate gift card? I want to buy a new iPhone. Obviously JB HiFi/The Good Guys check out system sees the card as an actual credit card and not a gift card. Is there a way to do a ‘split payment’ online when paying with a gift card of this type?

    • +3

I think gift cards are VISA credit card numbers. So you cannot do it online. You have to take it into a store and do it at the counter.
I think Coles stocks up to $100 cards. There is a limit of 5 per person if you manage to get hold of one

    • +2

Buy gift card using these cards and then pay in split payment

  • Is there a way to convert these to eBay? Do Officeworks sell eBay giftcards which you can use the Ultimate GC to pay for?

    • +5

      Three problems with that statement:

      • Officeworks does not sell eBay gift cards nor any type of gift cards exchangeable for eBay gift cards (e.g. Swap Celebration gift cards, TCN GIFT gift cards).

      • Officeworks has a gift card policy specifically stating you cannot use any gift cards of any type to purchase any gift cards sold by them.

      • In the last couple of weeks, Officeworks has been progressively updating their instore POS system to automatically block the use of various Ultimate gift cards as a payment for gift cards (even if you have the Ultimate gift card on a mobile wallet). I have run into this myself and have seen an Invalid Product Mix error on the EFTPOS terminal as soon as I have tapped my phone’s mobile wallet when I tried to use an Ultimate gift card stored on it. The staff member got a message on their terminal saying I tried to use a "gift card type" payment method, so they knew exactly what I was trying to get up to.

Damn! Gone are the days of trying to hide paying for a GC using a GC using a mobile wallet at OW.
You would get told off right way if you tried using the physical cards.

Only some JB stores were a bit lenient on this, but I think they are also starting to enforce the rules strictly now.
Too risky to attempt 15% off Apple GCs using Ultimate GCs.

        • +1

Haha I will say that the staff member was confused when I triggered the error, because they did not realise that you could add an Ultimate gift card to a mobile wallet.

          • +2

@WookieMonster: The only time they would be able to see is if the POS terminals are lying flat on the checkout counters. So, as you go onto tap they would be able to very easily peek at the card you are tapping from your mobile wallet. A few OW stores are awkwardly setup like this.

In any case, all of this is moot point once they roll out the firmware upgrades across all retail stores.
It was bound to happen with all the 15% off deals on Ultimate GCs.

        • It's a pity since even ignoring the bargains of buying discounted giftcards with discounted giftcards JB have always consolidated my gift cards into one jb one until i tried to a few weeks ago so i could use it to pay for my order through sms checkout and was denied.

They explained there was some loophole that allowed people to use the cards twice that caused the policy to be enforced.

          • @xentar:

They explained there was some loophole that allowed people to use the cards twice

So, after consolidating all the Ultimate GCs into a single JB Hi-Fi GC, the funds were not fully transferred from the Ultimate GCs? :mind-blown:

Thanks for the post. Works out to be just over 13% off

    • What do you mean 13% off? There aren’t any fees associated with these cards are there? I couldn’t see any of the website so isn’t it 15%?

      • +8

A 15% bonus value deal is not the same as a 15% off deal.

        Think about it this way:

        • In this deal, let’s suppose you are purchasing a $100 gift card. You pay $100 for it, but you will have $115 loaded onto it. In other words, you are buying a $115 gift card for $100, so the discount is 1-100/115, which is equal to ~13.04%.

        • In the December 2022 deal, if you purchased a $100 gift card, you paid $85 for it and had $100 loaded onto it. In other words, you are buying a $100 gift card for $85, so the discount is 1-85/100, which is equal to 15%.

Thank you for clarifying that for my simple mind, clearly I gotta go back to math class 😂

I can never seem to obtain any of the GC when the promotion is on at my local Coles store, always out of stock.

      Check the freezers

      • So that's where they hide it :).

Damn, cmon Woolworths, match Coles and go 15% discounted Ultimate Gift Cards so I can pay with 10% discount Coles Mastercard!

    • Agreed but probably TCN ones are better for online redemption.

    • Woolies still got the fobia about the extra 5% from people using Wish eGC to buy in-store giftcards ages ago.

      • I’ve never tried this so don’t quote me on this, but technically if you load all those Woolies gift cards you got on discount elsewhere into your Everyday Pay wallet via the Everyday Rewards app and then use that as that as the payment method to pay for any TCN GC offer instore… it can still stack?

Looking to try when the next round of TCN ones come up

        • It worked ages ago. In recent years, its offers are consistently worse than Coles by about 5%. Hence, I say it is like a fobia that people may find a way to pay less.

It won't work via everyday pay as I know.

        • +2

That used to work during the early phase of the Everyday Pay trial, but all purchases of gift cards were blocked by the time I joined the very late phase of the trial around a year ago. I got Item Not Allowed errors at Woolworths and BIG W checkouts, and I even managed to cause the BIG W self checkout I was using to crash (which really annoyed the self checkout assistant).

The Everyday Pay FAQs also state that purchases of gift cards (and tobacco) are blocked on Everyday Pay.

I would encourage you to still give it a go, because you never know when Everyday Pay is updated and accidentally lets this happen!

    • You can't use a Coles MC to buy an Ultimate at the self serve terminal? Damn, I thought you could.

      • I don't think Coles lets you use Coles MC to buy gift cards from Coles. Don't think the same applies at Woolies, though.

        • You can use Coles GC on woolies checkout to buy GC from woolies.

          • @gauravmau: I think you meant Coles MC, not GC. But if you did meant GC, then please elaborate.

Can we use ShopBack 2.5% shopping Visa card to buy this ?

  • I've had issues in trying to redeem Ultimate Home cards at GoodGuys.

Multiple attempts and terminals have been unable to process, Ultimate says GoodGuys needs to update their terminals, GoodGuys said it was a card issue despite the card being active online with full credit.

    • Was this online or in-store? One or multiple split payment?

      • In store, no split transaction, single gift card being used for purchase.

  • +2

Can we still use these at JB HiFi to get Apple credit?

Now that OW, Coles have clamped down hard on gift cards.
