I’m holding out for the Mmm model I hear they’re beta testing it at the moment with some crash test dummies.

    Kidneys or this?

    • +7

      this.

      • +1

One kidney may not be sufficient

        • Both??

      • +4

        nah i prefer this

        • Aahh..one kidney is enough for this

  • +2

Overkill for most people, need a deal for 16GB or 32GB RAM/1TB SSD.

    • +5

Probably clearing all the high end M1 Max stock that no one wants to buy at the original asking price. Doubt a < half price 16GB/32GB variant will be availalbe from any retailer.

      • Yeah any of those left are probably all sold.

    • +8

I agree but does it really need to be said that a $4000 laptop is overkill for most people? Should be pretty obvious that people can get by with spending less.

      • +3

Graphic designers need the ram, After Effects uses it all then uses SSD as scratch disk when the ram runs out. Audio people also need a lot of ram, probably even more than 64GB depending what they doing.

        • +6

Ah I'm not disagreeing that certain people need it, I'm just thinking its a useless thing to say it is overkill. It'd be like going to a deal for a 85" TV and saying that you can get a 65" for cheaper.

        • No 64g is for all them damn docker containers.

          • @CowFrogHorse: I'm a BA and our dev is starting to look at docker and this comment doesn't give me any confidence that it's a good choice and that it's high utilisation? Can you explain why you say this please?

      • I know some people that got this solely because it's 16" and don't need or care for the specs. Before the 15" MBA, it was the only option if you wanted a larger MB

        • Those people would not buy an M1 Max of any description, they would just get the base 16 inch M1 Pro 16 inch, which would still outperform the latest 15 inch MBA M2.
And of course, now they do have the 15 inch MBA which is more suited to their needs. Lovely machine.

    Thanks bought 0.

    • +1

      Thanks. I bought 2x more!

      • +1

When I divided the amount you bought by the number I bought all I got was undefined. I was happy to get my fine waived.

  • +4

At first glance, the thumbnail looks like the screen iss badly damaged…

    • Second glance also…..

  • +1

    Any 14"?

I thought it was weird that only one store was clearing stock, so I'd be interested to see if the 14" pops up.

Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i 14'' i9-13905H recent deal was 1k cheaper, more powerful CPU but less Ram/HDD

Good time to have 10% off eBay gift cards!

    • +4

Intel vs M1 processor is a massive difference… I never heard my Macbook Pro M1 fan running..

      • Yeah, honestly I was thinking simply for music production but both units are amazing.

1k is a bit difference tho.

    • Maybe there's a chance it'll get a bit cheaper before all the new ones stashed about the place run out? Though the mwave stock sold out pretty quick.

    • Haven't really seen 10% ebay gift cards recently, not enough to by an MBP anyway

  • its temping but since this is a 2021 model I wouldn't go for it since we are close to a M3 chip if this was the m2;s then it would be a steal.

    • +3

M2 is barely any difference. 15% better performance at 15% more power usage.

      • +1

Kinda feels Apple hit the efficiency wall really quickly. Good thing for them out of the gate. More of a challenge going forward

Be interesting to see what the big semiconductor boys could do with a desktop/laptop ARM chip

        • +2

Yeah Intel and AMD will hopefully make some big advancements soon, but they are on the back foot, both with R&D, as well as the x86 ball and chain that is Windows for most of their retail market. Apple can totally change up their software at will, which is what makes them so formidable now they are in-housing the hardware. Side note: I read that Apple's annual budget JUST FOR R&D is within 10% of Australia's entire defence budget. Mental.

Back to the chips, M2 is kinda just overclocked and shuffled around variant of M1, they are both 5nm. Will be interesting to see how the 3nm performance and efficiency is when M3 arrives.

          • +1

@eggboi: Re software, I remember in 2007-2009 how it seemed so stupid that apple refused to support Flash on iphone in any form, ever. Then the world bent to their will and now nobody uses flash lol.

            • @eggboi: IIRC it was less people bending their knee for Jobs and more Adobe not being able to fix Flash. There were always security issues popping up that they could never get on top of and it was always a battery hog.

        • According to Geekbench 6, the vanilla M2 ranks higher than the M1 Max for single core. And for multi core the M2 Pro ranks higher than the M1 Max. Wouldn't surprise me if vanilla M3 ranks higher than the M1 Max for multicore. Of course the real value for this deal is the storage and ram.

          • +1

            @AustriaBargain: You're misinterpreting the benchmarks.

The results aren't that surprising once you realise that single core performance doesn't change within a M-generation, because they all use the same cores, only the quantity changes. But single core only stresses one core, so the M1 vs M1 Pro vs M1 Max all perform the same. Similarly, M2, M2 Pro and M2 Max all perform the same and obviously better than M1. "The vanilla M2 ranks higher than the M1 Max for single core" is misleading and means very little because the strength of the M1 Max compared to the M2 isn't in its single core performance.

As for the M2 Pro ranking higher than the M1 Max in multi core, do realise that there is no difference in CPU core count between Pro and Max CPUs, only the GPU cores double. So that statement means very little as well, because obviously the 2nd gen 12-core CPU will outperform the 1st gen 10-core CPU. Again, the strength of the Max CPUs compared to the Pro counterparts lies in its GPU only.

As for the vanilla M3 beating the M1 Max in multi core, it'll be a tough ask but Apple might be able to pull it off. We gained 13% in MC performance going from M1 to M2, Apple's going to need at least +28% on top to match or beat the M1 Max

            Geekbench 6 multi core
            M1: 8576
            M2: 9691 (+13% on M1)
            M1 Max: 12439 (+28% on M2)

        • I suspect M2 development was Covid response damaged and the M2 is just an holding update to the M1 to keep it and its variants competitive.
We will just have to see what the M3 does before we can say Apple hit a wall.

        • They reaped all the benefits of arm in the first gen because intel were sitting on their arse for forever with their 14nm+++ bs. Future m generations will follow other x86 cpus with 15-20% increase in performance gen to gen. The bigger gains will be in gpu compute.

  • RIP .. I paid that much for my Intel macbook with 16GB ram and 500GB ssd haha

  • Is 16inch macbook, 8tb ssd 16gb ram m1 pro , for $3500 a good deal?

    • 8tb is impressive, as long as you really don't need the extra ram it might be worth considering.

    • Where is that? Do you need 8tb SSD storage? I wouldn't go for it.. Processor and ram are more useful for me

  • Can i remove the MacOS and install Windows 11 instead?

    • +2

Not on M-processor Macs but you can have a Windows virtual machine installed

    • Why would you want to remove MacOS.

    • -1

Don't think you can run anything other than MacOS bare metal on these machines, not even Linux, at least not an easy task… If you need to run W11, there are much cheaper options everywhere.

    • +1

Not on the metal, but Windows 11 on ARM works extremely well in a Parallels VM

    • +1

No but you can install bare metal Asahi linux. Don't expect it to work well though.

  • +1

can this play ray tracing games

    • +1

Yes, Geforce Now or XCloud streaming.

  • +1

That 4TB SSD has me drooling

    I paid more than this for my 512GB 36GB M1Max 16.
I am jealous, this thing would be perfect

    • I'm jealous you found a way to put 36GB in a M1Max 16.

      • Yeah, I'd mean 32 :P

  • +4

Why do all these rando sellers have heaps of hectic-specced Macbook Pro stock? Is it just because apple never officially supports heavy discounts, so they move it through back channels?

    • +3

I have the same suspicion… The last mwave deal some units were backorder, clearly suggest Apple is moving them through some lesser-known resellers.

      • Yes. B&H had the same deal.

      • Do they have more M1 chips to clear? I thought Apple is a fan of JIT manufacturing

    • When Apple releases a new MacBook Pro, in addition to the 3 standard configs available on launch day, they seem have a secret CTO high spec model that's also in stock. This is not advertised though, only visible once you customise it on their website check pickup options.

With the 16-inch M1 MacBook Pro it happens to be this M1 Max 32 core, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB SSD that's been floating around now. More info on Reddit and MacRumors

Seems like a lot of these weren't sold directly through Apple and they're now clearing them through local retailers.

    • Configure To Order machines are always low volume so Apple are just bundling all the top spec last-gen parts and clearing them through retailers that attract the more hardcore user

Also means the M3 on TSMC 3nm is going to be a huge upgrade with all M1 and M2 machines about to take a massive hit to their value

      • M3 having "huge" upgrade over M2 is unlikely. Apple is already playing the cores trick. It's unlikely Apple will use up all the reserves and go for Intel level of power consumption.

If M1 or M2 ended up taking a huge price dive, that will be good for OZBers.

3nm performance, we will get to know with A17 first.

  • all gone (main site), missed it again

    • EBay listing is still active. Only $110 more after using the eBay code . Price $4099

  • +1

    ALL GONE!

    • +1

Keep an eye out on scumtree and marketplace

      • Good luck for them. Trying to sell these, as retailers keep clearing them.

And who's going to pay them thousands of dollars more when they see the receipt?

        • Yeah and also most people on gumtree and fb aren't looking for laptops in this price range

          • @Nillionaire: That too, that's a lot of money to spend cash because people spending that kind of coin generally want to use it probably for business and it's a tax deduction

  • +1

    All gone. Faaaark

  • Price is same as M2 Pro (base model) with 32gb RAM. Is the extra battery life of the M2 Pro worth more than the upgraded SSD and RAM?

    • If the M2 is always plugged in and used as a desktop then absolutely

  • Someone selling one here from Mackay QLD for $4,099 after using eBay 7% discount code with free postage in case someone still wants it.
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/125999864757

    • +2

No clue why the dude bought it tbh, if this is from the mwave deal then he paid $3999 + shipping for it. At his $4399 + free ship, after eBay fees he's making a loss of $200 or so. Strange.

      • May be he also received 3 $0 variable fees promotion from eBay. He also has "Make Offer" function enabled. Probably worth trying to get extra discount if the seller accepts.

        • aaaand just like that someone bought it!

    • Thanks a lot man. Just purchased it. 🙂

      • That's great. Did you make an offer or purchased at advertised price ?

        • Didn’t want to take the risk given you had made it public. 😉

          • @JC1186: Smart move 😅

            • @Go Maroons: Only just noticed you first mentioned it about 80 minutes before I purchased it.

Strange. It was only $110 more. 🤷‍♂️

              Not complaining. 😉

  • Waiting for another deal on 14 after having dillie dallied around on the mwave one.

    • Yeah I wanted the 16 inch, but since I started using my iPad in side car I'm thinking maybe 14 would make more sense. Then again I do keep finding the Adobe interface cramped in 13 inch MBP, having to scroll down the properties panel every single time gets old, so maybe 14 wouldn't be much better.

  • +2

I had one meeting and gone, thanks Ozbargain for saving me $4k

  • Damn, good deal !

The below specs were $5849 at launch (about 5500 with Uni discount).

Apple M1 Max chip with 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine
    64GB unified memory
    1TB of SSD storage

Was hoping for 4500 on eBay about 6 months ago, but MWAVE's deal ruined it for me LOL

    • How does someone at Uni afford this? If parents, why worried about saving? LOL

      • Don't want to open a whole can of worms but mate, my brother who is 19 just spent $3.5k on a gaming rig, same generation are complaining rents are too high… the economy is so heated now.

        • Part of the lying flat movement. If ya can’t get a house, might as well enjoy life

        • Hahah you mean like everyone flying to Europe in their 20s but they can barely afford rent? Theyll be whining about housing for decades!

      • Mum, Dad, I need a new computer for my Bachelor of anthropology.

      • Some can pay $230 per month on their 24 month finance offering……but yeah, the price is ridiculous.

MBP's have gone from 2K to over 5K in the last 8yrs or so. Seems they can dictate the price and the market (sheep) will follow.

All other manufacturers used to offer a decent sub 1K deal, now they're all over 2-3K or more because hey, if apple can do it, why cant they?

        • +1

"MBP's have gone from 2K to over 5K in the last 8yrs or so"

Hm I don't think you're comparing apples to apples there. The 2015 15-inch macbook pro with dGPU was close to 4k.

          • -1

            @Mostly Fanless: I said 8 years or so…….maybe closer to 10 lol

            • +1

@TB0n3: I had a friend pay over $4k for the first MBP in 2006, so no, MBPs have always been expensive. And isn't it the other manufacturer's fault for thinking they can be Apple?

    • I think what helps people pulling the trigger, including myself just now, is that the resale value will hold up so well. And that’s a big plus imo.

  • Now main site is showing $4399, so odd!

  • AppleCare+ prices for this model and spec is - A$239.99/yr. or A$649 for 3 years

    • -1

Only a fool would buy Apple Care. 90% of the extras apple care give syou are already covered by Australia consumer law.

      • This is AppleCare+ which covers accidents. You won’t get that with the ACL.

      • You get the following with AppleCare+ in addition to mandatory ACL coverage. might be worth it for some accident prone fools people,

        • Accidental Damage Protection
          - Unlimited repairs for accidental damage
        • Onsite Service
          - A technician will come to your work site or home

cow: You forgot to mention the little writing…

          https://www.apple.com/au/support/products/ipad/

Each incident is subject to a service fee of A$65 for iPad, or A$45 for Apple Pencil or an Apple‑branded iPad keyboard

Who pays $45 to fix an apple pencil which is worth $150 ?

Direct access to Apple experts by chat or phone

          everyone has this…

          24/7 priority access through getsupport.apple.com

Anybody can use this as well…but hey if you makes you fuzzy because they said you are special by all means pay.

Express Replacement Service: We’ll ship you a replacement device so you don’t have to wait for repairs

How can I get the Express Replacement Service for my product?
Contact us to request the Express Replacement Service. We'll place a temporary authorisation on your credit card to cover the full replacement value of your product until we receive and assess your original product.

          Yeh great deal…

          How much will it cost?
If you have AppleCare+, you can replace your iPad with an incident of accidental damage. You'll pay the AppleCare+ fee, as specified in the AppleCare+ Terms and Conditions. You can also review that fee in our pricing estimate tool.

But wait you pay the "service fee" and then more repair fees which you can find out by using the pricing estimate tool.

Like i said ….no different to someone without apple care.

In some cases, your coverage may be different. For example:

If your product has an issue that isn't covered by an AppleCare+ incident or our warranty or consumer law, you'll pay an out-of-warranty fee.

          What im shocked.
