really good ssd and bombastic price

    • Seems to have gone back up to $367

  • Why won't the 1TB version get discounted :(

    • +6

      But this is like… 4 x 1tb's….

      • +1

        AU$ 71+ per TB

    • I believe that it is in fact discounted on a Prime exclusive deal.

      https://www.amazon.com.au/Samsung-Intelligent-Magician-Softw…

      • It was $80 a week ago and I held off thinking it was going to be cheaper on Prime Day :(

        Rookie mistake

        • Yep well this must be disappointing.

        • Not necessarily. I held off on the 2tb pro pro deal last week and it was better on prime day as they did they heatsink version for the same price. It was just unlucky.. Still 28 hours left for them to do 1tb deals too so not all is lost

  • What is the lowest price these have ever been for legit local aussie stock?

    • +1

I haven't seen it cheaper in AU than this:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/780184

    • I was pretty happy to get it just under $400 from ebay a few months ago this is an insane price.. Makes it harder for me to resell mine tbb

    • Got the 4tb 860 Evo for 313 after cashback way back in 2021

  • +3

Am I correct in thinking this is only useful if you don't have a NVME header or you need to expand storage on top an existing NVME? Its speed is around 10% of a Gen4 NVME.

    • +4

Its also useful in notebooks that are older than nvme.

      • -1

Okay what is an "amazing drive" by your standards?

    • If you can get an NVME drive instead do it, but the theoretical speed of the interface will often not be the limiting factor, especially with cheaper drives. For more budget drives the difference between NVME & sata is largely academic, the flash memory/cache itself will be what determines real world impressions.

High end drives though, yeah NVME will let you actually use the full potential of the drive.

    • +3

If you copy large chunks of data to this drive, it would be faster than most of the cheaper QLC nvme drives.

    • +1

I already have NVME but my M/B only has 1 NVME slot, the secondary one halves my PCIe speed or something so I don't use it.

Generally they say that SATA SSD is fast enough in real world apps.

    • +10

Its speed is around 10% of a Gen4 NVME.

People always get caught up with the theoretical speeds but don't realise that the difference in real world performance is minimal. You'll notice basically no difference between SATA and NVME for gaming or most other applications besides niche ones (if you have to ask then you probably don't need it) but if you have the slots and the price difference isn't that much then you may as well get the NVME drives.

  • Thanks OP. Have a 1TB that I need to upsize so this is great timing.

  • +1

    Crucial MX500 4tb @ $276.35 or this

    • +6

      Probably the Samsung?
I recall someone saying that "the 870 EVO is guaranteed TLC versus the TLC or QLC MX500"
TLC tends to sustain at a higher speed than QLC, and is less complex so should also be more reliable than QLC.

    • +7

If I'm not mistaken, the MX500 now has QLC variants out there, whereas the 870 Evo is still TLC.
The MX500 also has a rated endurance of 1000TBW, compared to the 870 Evo's 2400TBW, although realistically most people will not hit either of these within the 5 year warranty length.

    • +1

Samsung wins I think but only in endurance.

      Speeds are the same.

So it's $2/TB more for double life span and Samsung ecosystem which means better compatibility with Samsung magician software.

    • +3

Definitely this, Crucial has ruined their reputation by substituting low quality components late in a product's lifecycle after it has already got good reviews. As far as I understand, Samsung has not yet done this.

  • +1

Got the 2TB for 165 today happy as i dont think i would ise the 4TB for my security cameras. Great price.

  • Wasn't this available at this same price as local stock recently?

    • I checked the 4tb tags and I can't seem to find any amount remotely close!

      • My mistake. Same drive was 326 on an eBay sale.

  • +1

At the rate prices have been falling this year it will be sub $200 by Black Friday.

  • Need guidance, I have Dell 5593 with NVMe BC511 Sk Hynix 256 GB. Can I simply replace with this? On Dell's website it says max 2TB for the SSD so totally lost if laptop has limitations or Dell do not offer.. appreciate any ideas on this

  • Not bad, but happier with my intel S4510s

  • +1

Extremely annoyed. Bought one for $330 in the computer alliance deal back in June.

  • Seems like a great deal! I have an old IMac I want to update the drive on to an SSD - can I update it with this SSD? It’s a late 2009 IMac. Thanks!

    • +1

Yes this will work. You need to remove the front display (see ifixit for guides) or you could run macOS from an external USB enclosure. You’ll be limited to USB 2.0 speeds though.

      • +1

Great, really appreciate it - thanks!

  • Thanks OP ! bought 2

  • A little gunshy to go with OS stock after having 2 860's fail.

  • +2

Seeing Amazon trend on these lately will drop to $189 next week

  • +1

I'm kinda glad I didn't bite. There's still stock… Probably tonnes of stock. Price will go through this floor in a few weeks

    • Prices seem to have gone back up everywhere. :(

    • That's the QVO, would stick to the 4tb EVO if I were you.

  • +2

The 2tb drive has gone down to $138 on Amazon this morning!! 🤩 I’ve swapped my order from the 4tb to the 2tb for the purpose of upgrading the the HDD an old Imac.

Limited-time deal: SAMSUNG Electronics 870 EVO 2TB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-77E2T0B/AM) https://amzn.asia/d/fXl7HdK

  • Was reading a post about a purchaser receiving a mislabeled drive… Can anyone share if they come across this…

    https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/14y53rj/samsung_8…

"I just bought a new 4tb 870 EVO from Amazon and when I mounted it for the first time to initialize it on my Mac, it was titled “Sabrent Media Disc”."

    • +1

If they mounted it in a USB enclosure (most likely unless they were able directly connect it to the motherboard) then depending on the chipset of the enclosure it may report it as the brand/chipset of the enclosure in Disk Utility or the actual name of the SSD.

      • +2

Yep, this - they almost certainly used a Sabrent USB case/dock to connect it.

        • Yes at the end of the discussion thread the person realised that it was because he/she had placed the SSD inside of a Sabrent USB HDD enclosure which is why it was recognised as a Sabrent Media Device in the operating system. There was no scam going on by the seller. Makes you wonder how many people make the same mistake.

"Yes! I didn’t think of that - it’s a Sabrent USB enclosure. Thanks for all of the feedback."

    • Samsung Magician app will tell you if genuine.

  • good deal
