      Just curious, what's the appeal?

    • +9

At under 6 inch? What do you use such huge pixel density for?

    • +6

I had a 1440 x 3200 px display on the Galaxy S21 Ultra [6.8inch] and I couldn't see any difference in clarity between 1080p and QHD. The first setting I changed on the Samsung was reduce the render resolution to prolong battery life.

I think past the standard 1080p res you will be chasing diminishing returns in terms of picture quality, especially if your display is in the 5~6,5 inch range.

Multiple cards work if you use them in store.

Yea this, can only use one of those Ultimate cards online.

  • how many Phones out there Charge As fast as the mi 13 ?

that Would be good seems like the Camera is pretty Good as well but dos the CPU not also Overheat ? it is a gen 1 after all …

happy to provide my own Charger if need be :)

        • +1

Nothing wrong with the 8+ Gen1; are you confusing it with the 8 Gen1?

Besides, even the 8 Gen1 didn't overheat, CPU's are very good at throttling themselves to avoid that these days. They reach a thermal limit, then slow down rather than risk going over their heat specifications.

Only cons for me is absence of wireless charging

    • +5

Looks like the new zf10 now has wireless

      • Yes, thinking about moving on to that

Zenfone 10 has just been released last month btw

Only 2 yr OS updates for me is a deal breaker for the price though!

    • -3

Yeah, should be more like $400

      • +3

it has a flagship chipset and everything about the phone is flagship

        • +5

I used to get flagship zenfones for $400 with current everything.

Now they have tripled in price

Fair comment while stock, but ParanoidAndroid now has an official rom for it though; so not a huge concern anymore for people who are 'into' OS updates.

My LG V30 had its last update in Nov. 2019 and is running Android 9. It's still going as strong as ever.

      Do updates really matter?

The short answer is 'yes' if you use a lot of untrusted apps, or fall into a niche category of users, vulnerable to hardware or protocol exploits.

The long answer is 'probably not' if you're not a specific target for someone, and you exclusively use apps from known good-actors in regards to patching app-level exploits.

Assuming you're not providing hardware based attack vectors (like leaving NFC on 24/7, or leaving Bluetooth discoverable, as a few examples); Apps themselves hopefully handle their security, it's when there's an exploit within said apps, that can 'escape' into the OS, that OS level security patches matter.

An example of this happening on a phone is iOS and Pegasus. A ZERO click exploit in the iMessage app meant it could be installed without the user even opening the message.

        • Interesting. Thanks for the detailed response. I probably should take my security more seriously.

Zero click exploit. Does that mean you don't even need to click the unknown link for Pegasus to be installed?

          • @ninnypoop: Correct. You just need to recieve the SMS. You don't even need to read it.

              • @ninnypoop: If you want something that has longer software support, get a Pixel or one of the more recent Galaxy S or Galaxy A phones. They get 4 years of support or something.

                • @BadGiraffe: 4 years OS (android version) and 5 years security updates

                  • +3

@shxhshzhz: I told my brother in-law that and he laughed and said, "What's the point? Your battery will last only 2 years and then you'll have to get a new phone".

He can afford to change his phone every 2 years. Not everyone else can.

  • Definitely tempted with a camera like that. Seems to have good samples.

      The camera is hugely underrated.
Every review seems to say its 'ok, not great' yet it came top3 IIRC in MKBHD's blind camera test.
In addition, the stabilisation is out of this world, even in modes that CLAIM it can't use the gimbal, it still seems to use it as a simple 'huge OIS' and it STILL helps.

The ONLY negative I think I've seen is that it exaggerates dynamic range when in extreme conditions; like photographing a lit building at night. Darks are too dark and lights are very bright. Video doesn't seem to suffer this same flaw though.

I wanted a phone that could do VLOG's under ANY condition, and this is probably the only camera example I've seen that doesn't cause 'shakey light balls' when filming at night.

Nice that you can use a wired external mic on it too.

If it had an SD card slot it'd be perfect for me, but with the 256GB model, and a USB-C memory stick, I might be able to make it work :)

      • I looked at GSM Arena's camera samples and I think the night photos are like that if you leave the auto night mode on. I wonder if it's the same with it off.

    Waiting for Zenfone 10

    • Juat the price will be around $1200+

Any Zenbook users out here that use it in combination of a Zenphone?
Is there some sort of integration advantage?
Personally I find Asus made in Taiwan having the best longevity.

  • Does it support microSD?

    • Nope. Like my last phone, I'll still need to carry a USB stick to offload video if I'm recording all day.

  • This or the half priced Motorola Razr 2022? (https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/motorola-razr-2022-5g-256…)

Seems like for ~$750 you get the novelty of a fold phone and a headphone jack, and double the storage, am I missing something?
