  • Hi anyone having issues finding the $0 fare on return flight, or does the fare reduce after payment. I go to checkout but the cost is for both flights departure and return, I cant seem to find the $0 return flight avaliable? - I am a club member
And should there be a $0 fare showing when selecting the return flight?

    • There should be $0 fare showing up in the search results if they are available.
The original $0 fare I chose disappeared after I tried an hour trying to book with endless "something went wrong". I had to select another date.
Not sure whether there will be more seats for $0 fares available tomorrow when the public sale opens.

      • so theyre sold out is what your implying?
If so thats such a shame just wasted $55 on the membership

        • Yes, I think they are sold out if you cannot see $0 fares.
I was booking SYD to Tokyo. My original planned date is during March 2024. There were two dates in March showed $0 return fares when I first searched, but after an hour both showing normal fares. I had to switch to May. There were a couple of dates available for free return in May when I booked it.
Maybe consider search another promotion period if your destination has other promotion periods?

          • @seanyong: will do thank you, really wanted to go japan with that cheap of a flight, anyways enjoy your march holiday make sure to spend more time in osaka rather than tokyo

      • Yes I had issues with prices changing after I was clicking on dates etc, fumbled around on it for a while then gave up.
        Borderline bait advertising

on our way back from tokyo via Singapore… it's bad enough having a full service flight, I can't imagine the nightmare on a jetstar flight. I already saw on the schedule board a cancelled Jetstar flight an hour ago when I was at arrival hall. Would be stress way to start or end a holiday.

  • +1

I tried a few times and could not see any $0 fares. I did notice that the insurance that they offered went up in price each time I tried to book tickets.

    • I think you missed out. I started to search at 4pm and booked at 5pm, during that time my payment once cancelled as the dates i want in april was sold out. I had to choose diff combinations (return date) to get 0 and finally got it

    • just checked and there are still plenty of days in October that has $0 return from Sydney.

  • Maybe a stupid question but how can I sign up the newsletter from CheapFlightHunter? When I opened the website I did not see any buttons?
*Edit - Never mind. It turns out the subscribe button was blocked by my ad-blocker.

  • any budget hotel recommendation for four people in tokyo?

  • +1

site ended up crashing for ticket sales ~12:30am

  • Got my tickets! But looks like it’s $20 for non Club Jetstar return fades…

    • what days

      • +1

EDIT: ignore my comment - looks like they took the $20 off at checkout

  • Any thoughts on the Jetstar travel insurance?

    • +1

I never buy these bundle add-ons; they feel like those overpriced products at the cashier hoping for an impulse purchase.

Last month I paid $68 for 2 adults + 1 child for 2 wks in Tokyo at Tick Insurance. They're a subsidiary of Generali, and their productreview was alright (4.0), so I thought it'd be alright, but I didn't use it, so can't comment either way.

    • +1

As pointless as all other paid travel insurance, just get it free via a CC with international travel insurance.

      • Wish I'd known this before spending $700 on travel insurance.. 3 adults..

        • Ouch that's crazy expensive. Good one to keep is the Commonwealth Bank Smart Awards credit card.

  • +1

Lots of exclusions for Jan - Mid Feb (the best time to see the higher altitudes/Hokkaido as a winter wonderland), shame.

  • +1

Site isn't loading flights for me. Anybody else?

    • +1

try using your phone on mobile data not wifi.

      • works. thank you. will keep in mind for the future

      • Mobile data also not working for me :(

  • i can see $299 per monthly but why does it increase to $319 when you try to select any dates? what is the $20 for?

  • +1

Fantastic deal. Managed to pay just over $1,500 return for 2 adults and 3 children on direct flights from Brisbane-Tokyo. Irrespective of what everyone else says about Jetstar's reliability, this is cheap enough that I will put up with potential delays or lack of in-flight service.

    • +2

Yeah and just to think a full service for 1 can be around that amount. Yes you could have problems, but I think you're always in a better position to have one direct flight with a LCC as even if there are issues, the problems shouldn't be as bad as if you were connecting.

I've flown to Japan with Jetstar a few times although not in the last couple of years and they were fine. I'd say at least one thing they do right is they do at least offer free cups of water, which unfortunately some budget airlines don't. I feel this should be a minimum for all airlines doing routes longer than 3 hours.

That's what I hate about Virgin's new service, it's basically like Jetstar but without the prices and flying a plane that is not set up for long haul (narrow bodies can be set up well for long haul, this is not the case here)

    • Do you need to get 2 rooms with 3 kids?

      • +1

Yeah at most places, at least if you want a nice room. The Hilton at Disney has a room that fits us all so will go there for a few nights too

    • Do you mind sharing dates please? BNE as well…

      • They will be well and truly sold out now but 20-27 April

    • The good thing is it’s direct through the airline anyway so should problems arise at least it is their problem to fix, no shady third parties needed.

They might not be the most reliable but I’m lucky to have a good manager that should things go tits up and we end up back late, it’ll be an inconvenience not a disaster.

  • Can’t find anything for Perth anymore, anyone aware of any left over for Perth?

    • There was a few last night, however by a few I mean very few.

As per my post below I still recommend Singapore Air, for not that much more (if you need bags!)

  • +2

Looking at the prices, even in cheapest windows is about 3500-3700 base for 2 adults, 3 kids from Perth. Once you add in bags it will likely be around the 4k mark.

If I fly Singapore Air at the same time it costs about 4300 all up, however a consideration people need to make is that with the changing of rail pass costs more people should be flying in/out of Tokyo/Osaka to save a return trip to Tokyo. The rail pass made this a non issues historically but given it is doubling in price more people should be trying to structure their trips to only have 1 trip between Tokyo and Osaka/Kyoto to stop the need of having a rail pass.

    • for me the difference in fairs means:
      • Better overall experience with Singapore Air
      • Short transit in Singapore (1 to 2 hours) vs 5 - 16 hours in Bris/Cairns
      • Lots of luggage allowance
      • Can fly in and out of different airports saving a return Shinkansen ticket and bypass the need for the more expensive rail pass
      • Not have to worry about Jetstar cancelling any of the 4 flights you will be taking (having had Jetstar cancel or delay at least 1 leg of ever flight I have used them on in past 12 months)

I have flown the return for free through Cairns (with my adult brother) which was fine for us, but with kids in tow - not as much fun!

  • I booked for 4 adults (how are 12yr olds adults???) and one child… SYDNEY <> TOKYO for April school holidays (back May 7). Did my booking at 5am.. haha.

    Yay Japan!

    Oh God… Now the planning…

Saved 20c through Club Jetstar.. hahaha

  • Cost me $2716 with check in baggage for 2 adults and 3 kids. First time going overseas since having kids! We are not seasoned travellers so any hacks/tips anyone to share would be appreciated. Disneyland is definitely on the cards. Thank you @CheapFlightHunter for this deal!

    • Are you just doing Tokyo or are you moving around a bit?

      • Going for 2 weeks, probably spend first 5 days in Tokyo and then check out other parts of Japan like Osaka and Kyoto

    • +4

Also going with this deal for the first time. From what i've learnt:

Get a debit card with no fees (UBank, Up Bank etc.)
If you need cash, use no fee cards to withdraw cash at 7/11 atms only.
Only withdraw/pay with yen, not AUD.
Consider the JR pass for transportation. Prices are set to increase in October, so purchase before then (within 90 days of travel date).
3 star accommodation is good enough.
For internet, get either a pocket modem to share or keep an eye out for japan eSims (some are posted on here).
Get a single universal adapter, and a power brick to plug into it.

This is a useful forum: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/762147

      • +3
        1. Put Google Lens or Microsoft Translator on your front screen, as you'll be using that a lot (unless you read Japanese, as English is really sparsely used).

Consider the JR pass for transportation.

Not if you're only staying in Tokyo. JR pass is only valid on trains, not metro or buses. Get a PASMO or Suica card instead (they're charge cards, not passes). Consider buying 24, 48 or 72h metro passes when you expect to take a few trains in the day (they're not valid in trains, tho).

        For internet…

Get NTT's Japan Wi-Fi auto-connect app, that auto-connects to wifi hotspots all over the place (and, yes, get a Taiwanese data sim as backup).

        If you need cash…

It took me a while to figure out MCard is widely accepted everywhere cards are, bc the logo is not always shown amongst Japanese card brands, so initially I was withdrawing cash at 7-11 ATMs every few days. You only really need cash to pay at flea markets and older ticketing machines.

        • Fantastic, thanks for that!

Is Visa then less likely to be accepted than MCard? I'm going to take both either way but just so i know where to place my funds.

As for internet, how often would you be without internet with just that app? And why a Taiwanese sim?

          • +2

            @JiggyJiggy361: Here.

As for the internet, how often would you be without internet with just that app?

I got the one from TravelKon. I found it quite often didn't work. At times I thought I had burned through the allowance (there's nowhere to verify your balance; you have to rely on your phone's data usage stats), but then it would come back.

Is Visa then less likely to be accepted than MCard?

No. I did use VISA a couple of times (inadvertently, actually). The reason to use MCard is better exchange rates and no overseas transaction fees.

First time going overseas since having kids! … Disneyland is definitely on the cards.

Do go to Disneyland, if your kids are small. I chose DisneySea instead — bc it's newer, the reviewers I watched said it was better, and bc I thought my nearly 6-y/o (then) would find Disneyland too babyish. I was wrong; most of the rides at DisneySea are thrill rides, and what he really wanted to see was Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Pluto… the classics.

Almost forgot! It took us a while to realise we didn't have to pay transport fares for our 5-y/o. Not even half! In Japan, only kids in the equivalent of Year 1 and above have to be paid for.

Btw, this is my list of attractions in Tokyo. We didn't see it all, ofc, but quite often I would use it to see if there was something around of interest where we were at any given moment.

      • +1

JR PASS for your family of 5 will be pretty expensive. I got lucky and got a 7 days, which set myself back aud1000 for 2 adult 2 kids, for to and from Tokyo to Kyoto. I assume after oct it will cost 1500+ and in your case close to 2k.

Found it really useful adding suica card, which is like opal or myki, to my iPhone, and could top up using Macquarie debit card anytime. Took out aud1000 worth of yen at the airport with Macquarie card on 7 bank ATM and was enough cash to get me through all 10 days, everything else I just paid with the Macquarie debit card fee free.

        • Where did you buy the JR Pass from? I see there are lots of different websites that sell them

    • You are welcome! Have the best time :)

  • I tried to select the flights I was after. Then used the chat system with Jetstar and now I just get "Internal Server error" returns when I try to select flights.

I am trying to book outside of the promo but before it was allowing a selection of a flight with a price and a return flight etc.

    • Tried again using a different web browser and all good. What an amazing deal, I was going to organise dates etc for flights this weekend and was expecting to pay a lot more!. Now I have extra dollars to spend on Sushi and Ramen!.

Ps I got the Plus deal which will give me a few Qantas Points for free. I wasn't a QFF member but you can get free membership via Woolworths Everyday rewards for free. Normal cost is $99.50.

      Yippee ! 😀👍

      • +1

I've had free QFF for almost 20 years. All I had to do was give an overseas address.

      • I did the typical OzBargain thing. 😌

Buy, think, regret, re-evaluation of life, excitement, guilt, happiness and relief. Put all those in a bag and shake them up and you have my sentiments from the last 2 hours. 🙃

I didn't really factor in local flights but still the total (Yes I know Jetstar is considered a budget airline etc) was still around what I was hoping/expecting to pay.

When I looked at Qantas/JAL the price was around $600-$1000 more.

There are always options in life aren't there though?.

I hope this option to get to, and get back from Japan, works out for me. (First trip to Japan and have been waiting since 2019/2020 when I cancelled flights back then due to the "Issues" at the time)

  • -6

    Why?

Travel within Australia and support our home economy

    • If us Aussies were like the Japanese maybe I would.

  • -5

When you go there can you please let us know about the fukushima water? Cheers!

  • Site not working have tried multiple devices and different browsers anyone have the same issue?

  • It shows "Free Return available" but it actually shows $500-$600 on the return flight within the promotion dates!?

Cannot see any $0 return at all.

    • It means those $0 fares are already sold out as very few $0 return fare were available in each category

      • I found there were quite a few options when I booked a couple of days ago. Obviously, they've been OzBargained.

      • If you can not fine $0 fare consider QF sale.
Around $1050 return including 30k bags and meal and drinks.

    • +1

I booked one today for two people, literally about an hour ago and had to really search. There were still some left Bris > Tokyo for mid June but couldn’t find any other dates.

Annoyingly it didn’t like me running multiple searches and seemed to return errors when I was trying to be clever and search lots of options. I found the best way was to select an outbound date, and scroll on the return date until I found a $0 one, and amend the departure accordingly.

  • Sort of related so FYI for those that are Club Jetstar members or signed up because of this deal. I believe you can only get the fare club prices for a max of 5 people. I booked for 6 and I got charged the non-club price for all 6 fares. The system doesn't charge 5 fares at club prices and 1 at non-club price. In hindsight I probably should have booked 5 in one booking and then the remaining 1 in a separate booking.

    • Ah so unfortunate, thanks for the heads up tho its not applicable to me

  • Saw someone posted above that UBank debit card doesnt charge fees when withdrawing cash overseas, would it require a credit check to open a new UBank debit card? Are there any other options?

    • No credit check for bank accounts/debit cards, only for credit cards.
Plenty of options for free foreign transactions accounts e.g citibank, macquarie, ing etc not sure for ubank sorry. Look it up here.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/cards_with_no_overseas_tra…

Many options for credit cards too

    • Upbank is great too with an excellent app. If you plan on using a digital transit card on apple wallet to travel in Japan, recharging only works with mastercard which is what upbank uses for their debit card while the ubank dc is a visa card.

Otherwise, the best cards for travel that I have used are hsbc, upbank, ubank, wise and revolut.

      • +1

HSBC is VISA. I have both HSBC and UP, and definitely avoided using HSBC's VISA in Japan; UP's MCard FX rates and fee free withdrawals were unbeatable.

  • Hi, does anyone know cheapest way to get more luggage after buying our ticket? It cost double price for buy extra luggage after booking. Thanks

    • +1

Does it? Good thing I booked the check-in luggage on the return flight then (for all those Daiso NipBargains). How much are they charging? It was $39 during booking.

      • They want to charge me $110 for 20kg tokyo to sydney

        • Aargh damn… I got 70 for one leg so 140 for return, damn shouldve bought when bookg. Seems like being club member doesnt matter.

  • Tis a bit annoying how the selected dates and return differ in prices heavily but I guess that's the norm for these deals + the usual shenanigans with jetstar.

  • Just wanted to say thank you for this! I never would have seen this and now have a trip to Tokyo booked for a bargain price of $450 including luggage. Thanks :)

  • Return for free or get what you paid (for the return trip) back!
