Just got the email and booked for Easter School Holidays next year. Have to return a days or two after school starts for the return for free but thats fine.

    • +1

Price? Interested in doing the same.

      • +6

        booked 2 adults and 2 kids. $656.00 aud p/person return from Melbourne inclusive of 2 x 20kg up and 2 x 30kg back luggage.

  • Anyone reckon there will be a sale on Japan for mid Jan or is that too close to NYE / peak holiday season

    • +2

I would say too close, we paid a LOT for tickets around that time when we went early this year.

      • +2

Hard to tell really, Phil Hoffman did a radio interview yesterday saying the airlines have advised they are boosting flights, legs and destinations anywhere from 2x-5x what they are currently offering, starting December 2023 and going in to 2024. New airlines are supposedly entering all states in 2024 as well, except TAS/NT. He thought with the level of projected flights increasing at the current rate, discount foreign travel will be here again in less than 6 months and cheaper interstate travel will be the norm again in about 12-18 months so long as the carriers can make-up a chunk of the pointless Covid shutdown losses they incurred.

        • +1

Not sure why you got negged, this is wonderful news!

  • +22

Did this and got stuck in Cairns for a day due to maintenance issue with plane. Was told at the airport that they will pay for accommodation and $30 meal as compensation when I sent in my receipts. On return, I was told by customer service I was not eligible for any reimbursement despite reading them their policy. Had to escalate to a manager. Buyer beware!

    • +2

Yep their Dreamliners are nice planes but can they afford the maintenance?

    • +7

Australia really needs EU style traveler protections. In Europe you would've been eligible to receive 600 EUR cash per passenger for a disruption like that. I bet they would've got their shit in order if that's what they would've owed you.

  • +2

How much extra is it for checked baggage?

    • +3

It's about $55 each way for 20kg checked luggage

  • +3

Nice to fly on a Dreamliner when they work.

Terminal 3 in Narita is pretty deserted, no airbridges, the required bus to Terminal 1 goes now and then with endless stops. But hey it is cheap!

    • +1

Easy and cheap bus to Tokyo Station from directly opposite customs exit. Fantastic for carry-on.

      • details on this? Would like to try this for our next visit rather than the skyliner.

        • +1

As you come out of customs there are two bus ticket desks directly ahead. One is brightly lit and serves two people at a time - and have an expensive bus which is a similar price to the rain. To the left of this, around the pillar, is the Low Cost Bus (actually an intercity coach) which is 1300yen to Tokyo station. Just go out the door to the right of the desks and the bus will leave from one of those stops - very handy. The bus runs every 20 minutes.

          • @valuer: cheers thanks for this info.

            • @a l an:

which is 1300yen to Tokyo station

That's what I paid on the local train (Keisei line). Just go on Google Maps, and sort transport options by lowest cost. Right now, it shows ¥1154 on Keisei + Sobu lines to Tokyo station. The ¥1300 shutle is also there. Another good option is the Skyaccess line for ¥1344, that uses the very same tracks as the skyliner. The duration differences are negligible to me.

              • @wisdomtooth: It's a useful tool but there are many times in Japan where Google Maps get things wrong (even where an entrance is to a garden) and this is one of them. We found it's timings were not to be trusted. Heck, there isn't even a train at terminal 3! (It's over at terminal 2).

          • @valuer: do people still buy the JR pass when visiting japan? i assume no if only tokyo
and yes if travelling via shinkansen between cities?

            • @furythree: True the JR passes (there are many train passes) work out to be of value when traveling a distance. The prices also rise this year.

      • +1

I thought they cancelled all bus routes from HDN to tokyo station due to covid?

        • It's definitely still running.

          • @infinite: Do you happen to know the bus line name? Is it the aiport limousine bus or keikyu.

I emailed both a week ago and they said the service was suspended.

    • +1

We just walked, no need for a bus tbh, maybe 10 mins at most to get to the train.

      • I was there a year ago, because of covid many international flights were routed thru terminal 3. Looked like a hospital with a see of masks. Hope all is open now.

    • +7

It fascinates me how critical people on this forum are on every deal. No air bridges and you have to take a bus?? Bohooo you’re travelling, and not only that you get a great deal.

      • +1

Spot on, this is $200-300 less than the next cheapest flight. Is that airbridge and bus really worth $200 to people?

    • +1

In June my Jetstar flight made us go through terminal 2 on arrival. Not sure why as it's always been terminal 3 before.

      • I am trying it in November, got to transfer from Haneda to Narita.

        • +1

There is a train that runs between the two and runs as part of the subway line as a through service. Takes a while and isn't well publicised.

532 from Perth to Tokyo in Nov/Dec is either a lie or gone already?

    • Are you a Club member ?

      • shouldnt matter, non members can still see member prices

from what i can see cheapest flight perth to tokyo is around 700, return free

        • What dates from perth is return free?? i was unable to see any

          • @10muscat: Yeah i think all are gone now

First 5 and 6 dec and a few more were available

Then only 22 nov (others gone)

Now i think none (all gone)

  • +1

Do you have to be a club Jetstar member to return for free?

    • +2

if you don't, you have to wait for Friday.

I recommend to add it on your booking now to get the date you want.
A good date's gone quickly & you might not find any free return, especially for international flight.

    • +2

is that subscription even worth it? didnt look that appealing when i looked at it, savings arent much

      • +1

If you're a family, the baggage discounts pay for it… solo/couple with less baggage, negligible benefit (aside from early access like this)

  • Can we use Qantas FF points for this? Was hoping to wait for Qantas Japan sales.

    • +2

Probably could, but usually wouldn't if you the sale price is this cheap. Taxes alone I would imagine $2-300 each + QFF points.

    • yes you can. it prompted me to use it on check out. though there is a minimum amount of points required to be used.

    • I believe there was mention of points and pay on the website.

  • +24

Did this exact flight, the trip to Tokyo went great, the trip home was less than average.

Paid for inflight meals and credit, didn’t get the meals until half way into the flight(we assumed we hadn’t actually paid for them since they had not arrived yet.. so we bought other stuff) when they did arrive it just got dumped on our tables with no word, zero communication between cabin staff so we ended up giving away our actual dinners after having a rock hard ham cheese toastie each being the only option because they asked everyone else before us(wtf is the point in pre paying for credit then??)Then we spent an extra 6 hours in cairns airport, slept for the first half cause we arrived about 3:45am or so, woke up around 7 when the airport actually started to open up. Jetstar waited 30 minutes until the take off of our CNS-SYD leg to tell us we had $15 credit for use in the airport(didn’t even pay for a salad lol) and because customs is done in Sydney you’ve got a choice of one cafe and one shop/pharmacy. Captain explained it was a staffing issue and they didn’t fill legal requirements for the second leg, my subtle guess is we were waiting for a staff member in cairns to wake up and get to work lol.

All that being said i realise it’s a budget airline so you get budget treatment but I still think it was beyond reasonable at that point, especially the lack of effort to make things a bit more comfortable, we did still pay for the trip lol.

Just wanted to put my experience in for this flight so others are aware, I don’t think any one provider is better than the other, they’ve all had good and bad moments for me personally, what bigs a company back is how they handle a bad situation and Jetstar did a bad job.

I took a Jetstar flight to Bali last month. My only recommendation for potential customer, fly Jetstar for any route under 6 hours is fine, anything over, don't go with them.

From Melbourne to Bali is 6 hrs out and 5 hours back. This is the maximum flight time for me and my wife to fly with Jetstar. (Not only you need to pay extra for food, but the food is very bad and hard to swallow)

The service is very normal but cold and you can tell that they don't want to work for Jetstar, they want to work in the mainstream airline but they can't.

In my experience, mel-syd or syd-bne or mel-ben is no problem as these routes are way too popular, with too many flights per day that you are unlikely to sleep overnight in an airport.

If anything goes over 6 hours, don't take Jetstar(or just don't fly budget airlines).

      • +1

        Paid for inflight meals

Therein is your mistake. Why would you want to eat airplane food anyway?? Narita has a fairly good food court right after luggage check-in. Kinda ugly, but the options are good. And I was surprised the prices were similar to anywhere in Tokyo, not the typical airport markup. Have dinner there before the flight instead. And take snacks. Not the airplane food! 😄

I'm actually glad Jetstar charges extra for the food and the amenities, so I don't have to pay for shit I don't want.

        • When you have hungry kids you won’t say that everyone’s case is different

          • @charliechao: We do. We went last month (BNE-TKY via CNS). Even more of a reason not to get airplane food. Not sure about you, but we are pretty strict on what we feed our kid. If you grocery shop for snacks and fruit before going to the airport, you have better options. And it's cheaper too.

Is anyone having issue logging into your Jetstar account? I'm unable to sign-in, just kicks me out as soon as I try to login :(

    • fine for me. clear cache?

      • Clearing cache didn't worked, created new account which worked.. not sure whats wrong with old account which i prefer

        • I had to do the same thing with Aus post a few months ago, couldn't track anything with my account, new account worked fine :|

    • I just fixed this problem. Just click "forgot your password" and reset it, should work then

  • Can you see the availabiltiy without being a member?

  • Nice deal. Knew I should have waited!

Booked $1200 Qantas tickets to Tokyo a little while ago.

    • I'd cancel them if I were you unless those flights are nonrefundable of course

  • do you need a star club membership for each family member?

    • +2

I just tested this, you only need one person to be a Club Jetstar member but they need to make the booking

      • thanks mate

  • Does the return flight have to be from the same location? E.g. Sydney to Tokyo and Osaka to Sydney

    • +1

It won't for for these I don't think, because the only way to book open jaw Jetstar flights is to book two one ways, which won't work in this case because you need to get the corresponding return for free fare

  • Tempted to book but I've already got a trip to Osaka in December lol. Booked on the same deal last time.

    • How often do jetstar run their Japan sales?

      • I booked in Feb I think it was. So twice a year by that measure. Although this is the first year I've seen this sale.

      • +1

Use to be a few times 2/3 a year. Awesome to see these pre COVID level fares.

    • Agreed. Leaving in two weeks to see family on the only time they get leave, paid $1400 pp :(
This deal is amazing though and I'm pretty keen to do a second trip.

I can't find any Perth flights at all. Literally the moment I got the email from them I searched, every date they provided, but nothing! Totally false advertising.

    • +2

I just found $518 return Perth to Osaka, just put in random dates, out June 4 in June 12. Im sure they exist, make sure you are a member and logged in to find them, and click through the page where you actually select the flights to see the correct prices. I can send you a screenshot if you like

      • Thanks so much. It worked. For some reason it kept on kicking me out using Chrome Browser. I switched to Opera and it's working great now.

        • excellent, did you book?

      • Am i looking wrong or is there none under 680 in the nov/dec dates?

Just would like to share my SYD-OOL-NRT one-way in October. My SYD-OOL leg originally meant to be operated by the 787 taking us to NRT was cancelled, and I was moved to to a 6am flight (2.5 hours earlier than original). The OOL-NRT leg was then delayed by 2 hours or so because they had to quickly assign an incoming 787 from Japan onto our flight, taking the transit time in the Gold Coast to something like 6 hours. Everything else about them is what you'd expect from a budget airline. Book knowing the risks of flying them because their long-haul equipment operates at their limits. I know my experience is nowhere near as horrible as the worst stories told, but make sure you factor in any additional costs and lost sanity when you choose to fly with them…

  • I'm really confused, how do I find a free return flight??? What ever I look doesn't seem to offer a free return. Even signed up for their club membership too!

    • Are you trying to book from outside of Cairns? I got the free return fair on Cairns to Kansai; I'll book flights to Cairns later (hopefully on sale from a better airline). Those same flights from my origin city (Adelaide) were not available.

  • also if you buy add-on baggage, can we just buy for 1 person?

    • yes you can

    • Yes

  • +1

As shit as Jetstar is their extra baggage is very reasonable priced.

    • would it be a better idea to post a box back to OZ (via surface mail)? than paying for add-on baggage?

      • That would wholly depend on what you're trying to bring back and are willing to wait 1-2months.

Jetstar charge something like $70 +50 per leg for a full bag. Arrive home with all your stuff.

        • oh I saw it said $136 per person?? where does it say $70+50? Thanks mate

          • +1

@homersyd: That's my estimate, go with what the website says. Still heaps cheaper than postage if you're doing something like 15kg and the freight is instant plus insured by your travel insurance.

Compare to some of the full service carriers I've been charged $180USD for the same thing before. Jetstar is strangely a bargain here.

        • Sending 20kg via surface mail from Japan to Aus by Japan post costs 11900yen ($130)
          https://www.post.japanpost.jp/cgi-charge/index.php?lang=_en
So you can go empty handed. Then, buy clothes and send back home. Is it worth it?

          • @yasui: Stayed for 10 days and honestly would’ve managed fine with a decent sized carry on. Definitely going with an empty bag to bring stuff back, so many things I wish I bought more of whilst I was over there.

  • +2

anyone else having internal error now?

    • +1

      Yes

  • +3

Around $900 different between JQ fares and SQ with baggages and meals for 2 adults and one kid. Not worth that much gambling your holiday with JQ.
