Thanks for sharing this. Was just looking at buying one of these today and couldn't locate any good deals.

    Legend

    • Just started looking into these phones and stumbled across it. I'm not even with Telstra though!

  • +9

They really should start giving 256GB as a minimum or bringing back the SD card slots. Can't justify buying a phone I can't transfer all my existing data to

    • +1

This is why you should invest in cloud storage. Back up everything in case your phone shits itself.

And use the 128 or 256 for apps which I'm sure is more than enough.

I feel like the SD excuse is just a way for people to push away other people from a specific phone.

Also it's a known fact that SD cards usually slow down phones because of their slow speeds.

      • +7

$16 a year for 2TB of Turkish google cloud storage

        • how can you get this ?

        • guide my friend? any chance of google account being banned? that'd (profanity) my life up a bit.

      • +13

Also it's a known fact that SD cards usually slow down phones because of their slow speeds.

so don't buy a $4 one from aliexpress

      • +12

I've got it backed up but I like having it stored locally so I'm not enforced to pay a subscription fee for storing my photos, videos etc.

I'm not trying to push anyone away from the phone, I want one but can't justify it given 128GB is the only option for the 7a with no way to easily expand the storage. Hence my lamenting the lack of SD card slots

Whether they slow down phones or not it would be nice to have the option for those of us who like cheap local storage

        • -2

I think most people these days are quite happy with cloud backup and the prices it can be attained.

Having less on a phone also means better engineering capacity, thinner phone etc…Hence why very few phones are implementing storage.

Plus you need to think as a brand they are trying to build an ecosystem, cloud storage, google home etc…this phone is more of a buy in service than "Hey I want to store my media locally!"

          Horses for Courses

          • @Hanz Heinz: Agreed, and with Youtube Music and Google Photos back up, you really don't need any local storage and for $2 a month you are having your stuff accessible anywhere around the world. it just makes more sense, unless you want to get an iPhone 14 Pro Max 1Tb for an arm and leg.

            I have a 256gb S23 and I've only used 80gb including systems which is 40gb on it's own. But that's just me.

          • +10

@Hanz Heinz: The main issue is that there is no alternative if you want a high end phone. We want a sd card, not an ecosystem.

I'm tired of features being removed to be resold to us as services, and people defending this practice. I'm an early adopter of many of these technologies, and I still want the choice of having both.

You guys are using multi country abuses so that it doesn't feel that costly. Don't act like it's actually supposed to cost 2 bucks a month. It's Stockholm syndrome for very anti consumer behaviours.

            • @Wonderfool: A lot of us have no issues with advancing services that used to be 'features'. Look at having to have a DVD player and purchasing DVD's or renting movies and the ecosystem of free streaming / paid streaming there is now. Don't think anyone is complaining about that.

I don't agree, I think the company should have every right to charge more for upgraded storage rather than changing their ecosystem to fit a minorities needs.

Most phones and laptops don't even have 3.5mm jacks anymore, I could bandwagon and gripe of how much this effects my life…but I'm fine using some blue tooth headphones to overcome this first world problem

        • How do you locally store it? Automatically or manually transfer?

    • +3

Yeah, I agree. Once you take the size of the OS and apps into account, 128GB leaves you with nothing. I haven't changed my phone in almost 3 years because of this.

      • +1

Not sure about that, it all depends on personal use I guess. I've had 128GB phones for the last few years and only ever use around 50% of the storage and have around 200 apps installed. What apps take that much space? I also use cloud for photos and music though.

    • +1

Yeah I won't consider phones under 256GB anymore, 128GB is nothing these days with how much space apps and media take up.

  • pricebeat at officeworks?

    • +3

Last time I tried something similar the manager got hung up on the whole "Telstra ID Required" thing and wouldn't allow it. Your milage may vary.

      • jb told me the same

        • Geez, your lucky it wasn't jv telling you the same.

        • Jb told me the same on chat, so i went in they just gave it to me

      • Just rang them and same Telstra membership/ID required BS but Costco is OK even if it requires membership!

  • Thank you!!

  • +11

P7 Pro screen is crazy fragile. Buyer beware!

  • +3

128gb storage simply is not enough for a modern phone, cloud storage is also not safe. There should be a SD card slot for every phone nowadays.

    • I have 40 apps installed on my pixel 5a, along with everything else, Spotify has used 12gb of music (over 1200 songs) and all my photos from Google photos. still 83GB free from 128GB storage lol

      • I'm using a Pixel 3XL with 32GB storage and getting by. I do have to think about it occasionally but seeing all these comments calling 128GB impossibly low makes me chuckle. I would love 128GB but I'm honestly not sure what I would do with it all.

      • Yeah 128 GB is more than enough for me as well. I have something like 200 apps installed and still have 81 GB free

    • That would be true except I actually never used up to 80GB out of my 256GB iPhone XS Max and when I did a full transfer to my Pixel 7 128GB with most of apps that were iOS and stuffs I still got like 63GB left. That is on top of the 200GB Google Drive. So yes I think 128GB is ok for most people.

Also there are Pixel 6 and 6 Pro refurbs on eBay for well below $400 with the current refurb code. And do not require feeding all your family's PII, world+dog to the great Helstra dataslurp.

  • Great deal! Will be moving from my iPhone 12 Pro Max to the Pixel 7 Pro

    • -6

Great deal! will be moving from my S22 Ultra to your iPhone 12 Pro Max.

  • 7A:
The touch screen is not functional with my glass screen protectors
The fingerprint scanner works 20% of the time. Which means you usually fail three attempts in a row and have to input your pin anyway

Glaring faults for an everyday device.

    • Did you get a glass screen protector that only has adhesive on the edge of the protector and where the finger reader is located? Those are the worse screen protectors ever. I had that on my Pixel7P and I had to push down so hard to register my finger strokes.

You will need either the high end glass protector that cost like $80 each (unless you can find the cheap ones that has adhesive throughout the screen protector, which I can't seem to find for 7Pro) or you can be like me and just go with TPU screen protectors. I used to be exclusively glass screen protector ONLY, but I couldn't justify spending $80 on one, so I ended up switching to TPU screen protector and never looked back.

      • No, I don't know what it is but it wasn't adhesive on edges only.

I noticed the issues mostly when trying to touch near edges or pull down from the top. I couldn't hit the spell buttons on kingdom rush reliably :p

The protector was applied from opening the phone brand new, there was not a single speck of trapped dust etc. So it wasn't the screen protector application that was the issue either.

        • I have the same problem with my phone. After looking at the screen protector I believe it happens because the screen protector doesn't go right to the edge of the screen. This creates a dead zone along the edges of the screen protector and makes the part that isn't covered nearly impossible to touch (especially with a case on as well)

          • +1

@SpainKing: Whilst that's plausible, and may be the case for your phone, the 7A has such a big dead zone near the edges that it continues well away from where the screen protector ends. I can't believe quite how bad it is.

Or how bad the google case is (edges not raised enough to protect the screen nor even really fit a screen protector properly)

Nor how phones still have curved screen edges. What a dumb idea.

            • @justtoreply: This. I dropped my Pixel 7 Pro half a metre onto a wooden bench top. At first I thought nothing of it as it was such a nothing bump. But the screen completely shattered because the Google case doesn't extend beyond the screen. Clear design fault, but google will not come to the party.

Others have complained about the P7 Pro screens shattering randomly. Like I said above, buy at your own risk, or wait for the next one which apparently won't have the curved glass!

            • @justtoreply: I'm a long time satisfied customer of Spigen cases for over 10 years now. They're all very well made and Made in South Korea. I thought maybe I'll get a Google case too with my Google credits, but I decided to go back to Spigen because I trust them.

              • @ChairmanMeow: My last was a spigen. They don't fit tightly enough.. sand gets in the back and dents anything metal. Their stupid spigen logo also imprints itself on plastic bodies.

My poor v30 looks like garbage due to the spigen. But… At least the screen didn't break and I suppose that's good

      • Where to buy TPU protectors?

        • I bought mine from Amazon. They also sell it on eBay. The one that was mostly suggested to me was the amFilm TPU screen protector. I've been using my P7P with an amFilm screen protector for about 2 weeks now and it feels nice to the touch. I remember having bad experience with TPU protectors back to the iPod touch days, but this one is good.

    • I have no problems with my 7a. I don't necessarily even need to turn on the increases sensitivity screen protector touch screen mode.. But I did anyway.

    • My finger print sensor has been faultless

Using a screen protector, haven't turned on the screen protector function

  • Does getting a Belong SIM provide you with a Telstra ID? Bc Telstra own Belong?

    • +1

      No, seperate systems.

  • Are these locked to Telstra then, or can you use any SIM if you buy outright?

    • +3

Response from Telstra chat FYI. I'm not with Telstra, but might just source someone who is to buy it from their account number.

Thanks for those info. That was very helpful. To answer your enquiry, I am happy to tell you that outright device purchases are not locked to Telstra network. This means that you can use the device on other mobile services.

    • I don't even have any active services with Telstra, but I still have an account. I was able to buy a Pixel 7 for my son with the $300 deal they had a couple of weeks ago and it's not locked

  • Got the 7 pro for $869 a few weeks ago, very happy with it.

    • From where?

      • +1

Google EOFY sale ($300 off) + studentbean 10% off I'm guessing.

        • Correct.

  • -1

Pixel 8 (pro) coming out soon!!

    • +2

Probably at least $400 more than this deal though. To be fair there's always a newer phone on the way.

  • +3

You can choose the 256GB or 512GB model by simply add in a query in the URL, like this

    https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/mobiles-on-a-plan/g…

Much cheaper than all other retailers at the moment

  • Can this be price matched with jb or officeworks?

    • +1

Possibly. I know someone who matched the Pixel 7 Pro deal that Telstra had a couple of weeks ago with office works. They beat it by 5%

It probably depends on the member of staff you're dealing with at the time

    • I got one of these pricematched at JBHifi in Belconnen. "We can pricematch if you have a number at Telstra. Do you have a number Telstra?" "Yessirreebob I do." "OK, $599 it is then.".

  • -3

As an FYI, the phone will likely be locked to Telstra. I bought the Samsung A13 for my dad which is in the "outright" category on the website. Received the phone and confirmed with Telstra (in-store and over the phone) that the phone is indeed locked to Telstra and will cost $80 to unlock. I got the phone 2 months ago and still going through the refund process.

    • If it is prepaid, it is locked. Outright just means there is no monthly installment.

  • Is it locked to telstra?

    • +2

      No

    • -5

      Yes.

      • Yes what.?

  • Annoying you have to get a Telstra plan

    • +1

You can actually but it outright. Its one of the button options where they ask you how you'll pay (ie on monthly plan or outright). I almost missed it too!

      • Cheers!

      • -2

No, the phone will still be locked to Telstra in my recent experience.

        • The Pixel 7 Pro is not locked. The prepaid phones (such as with your experience) are.

  • -5

PSA that $200 used iPhones are faster

    https://browser.geekbench.com/mobile-benchmarks

  • -1

Said it and will say it again. Pixel 5 is better than this with Unlimited HQ photos. Also photo quality is not much different

You will not get a better fingerprint sensor than the 5
I will not upgrade. Keeping til updates expire til end of year

I would wait for pixel 8

Let's hope for less bugs and non curve screen

Next base model better be 256GB not the same rubbish 128GB. And make it more robust not fragile with better form factor

  • -2

Includes $4.17 monthly discount. Max discount of $150.12 when you stay connected for 36 months.

Need to commit to stay with Telstra for 36 months, No thanks.

    • Can be purchased outright if you have a Telstra ID

      • @celery juice Does Telstra issue a Tax Invoice for outright purchases? Thx.

        • +1

Yes, but you will need to ask for it as the tax invoice is printed manually from the checkout.

  • Thanks OP, have been considering on getting one of these since their release and now that my current one is end of life figured i would pull the trigger!

  • Can jb price match this?

    • i believe someone has tried it and worked but might be hit or miss. Read above.

  • 256GB 7 Pro is sold out

  • Has anyone bout an outright phone from Telstra and received an invoice so they claim back the GST on exit from AU?

    • When you return don’t declare and it’s found out you so get a fine. TRS is not worth it anymore

      • +1

Thanks for the heads up. Checked the TRS site and if it's below the passenger allowance, you don't have to declare it. Here's the statement from the incoming passenger card for WA.

'Goods obtained overseas or purchased duty and/or tax free in Australia with a combined total price of more than AUD$900, including gifts?'

Should be good to claim the 7a or 7 from another deal, as they are both under the cap!

  • It looks this deal is locked with telstra network.

    • Bought mine outright checked the IMEI number and it's not locked.

  • Anyone knows if this is dual Sim? Thanks.

    • Yea it is. Physical and e-sim.
      Google is your friend…

  • Does anyone have an image of this deal from the Telstra website from when promo was on?
