MSI Katana 15 15" FHD 144Hz i7-12650H RTX 4070 1TB SSD 16GB RAM W11 Gaming Laptop, Black $2,199 + Del ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Umart

SAVE $400!
$2,199 is the Cheapest high-end gaming laptop I have ever seen. NVIDIA RTX 4070 is significantly faster than the top-end 3080 chipset still found in laptops twice the price. All the other essentials like a fast i7 CPU, 16GB RAM, SSD and 144Hz screen are here too.

Compromises are the smaller battery (plug in for gaming) and the FHD screen (not 2K or widescreen). But a rig this quick should really be plugged in to get the best out of it, IMHO.

    $2199 for those wondering…

  • Battery 53.5 whrs might cause some issues here

    • +5

Yes, but how many gamers looking for a top-end chipset are going to want to play without it plugged in?

      • Me.

        • I’ll update the description to note the battery

        • You need an external power bank.

      • a lot of people still want to use their laptop as "normal" laptop… ive had terrible battery experience with some gaming laptops in the past that it was basically only usable for 1.5 hours or had to go to 1Ghz ultra power saving mode to survive just basic internet browsing.

        • +2

Thats just kind of expected right?

          • @superroach: Surprisingly some laptops perform better in low-powered mode.

So its not always that bad. The laptop i mentioned above was a 9th gen Intel MSI Stealth.

  • NOICE ! good specs for the price, BUT be aware that Katana is low quality.

Just thought I'd point out that of course NVIDIA gave the mobile version of the 4070 8gb of VRAM instead of the desktop versions 12gb.

A 1080 screen for a 4070 card is a bit of waste. A 2k screen would have done wonders

    • I'm not debating about the monetary value of a 1080 screen VS a 2K one, but seriously, can your eyes see the difference on a 16" screen and if so what are the benefits?

      • +1

It does make a difference. More detail

        • More detail

Technically speaking it's more detail and It would make sense if you output the laptop 16" screen to an external large screen.

    • You do realise that 2k = 1080p RIGHT?
What you were triying to say was 1440p.
Also, no one can tell the difference in RES above 1080p on a laptop screen, BUT they can tell the difference in QUALITY.

AND a bonus for you, ROM does NOT equal storage.

    Tough sell

For $2.2K, minimum is a high spec 2.5K screen

Crippled 4070 mobile struggles to pull away from the 3070 let alone the 3070 Ti

    AORUS 3070 FHD $1699
    Omen 3070 Ti FHD $1814
    Legion 3070 WQXGA $1999

    • +4

Oh wow, just realised the 4070 desktop is almost twice as fast with almost twice the die size… Seems pretty scummy to name it a 4070…

NVIDIA RTX 4070 is significantly faster than the top-end 3080 chipset still found in laptops twice the price

      Seems pretty doubtful…

      • +2

NVIDIA RTX 4070 is significantly faster than the top-end 3080 chipset still found in laptops twice the price

That is a typical misleading marketing statement.

    • +1

But you need to look at what is available right now.
I did a quick look on MSY and they've an Infinity with similar specification 62 Wh battery for $2,180.
Or I could buy a laptop with a 3070 GPU because I don't care that the 4070 offers 3-5% (theoretically) better performances while I save more money.

    • +3

Some 3070ti laptop variants perform better than 4070 laptop.

    • Totally agree

    • Legion is currently 2099

Late to the party here. As per usual downvote on low end katanas with the horrible cooling solution and un-updated chasis for 6 years running at this point. I feel sorry for every cpu and gpu that come off intel/nvidia fabs just for them to end up in a Katana chasis. Imagining being born in a jail cell in north korea from parents with political crimes and knowing you will be jailed in there for life. Yeah thats what these chips felt.

@Zeafer please see link I attached. The battery is painfully small even for a gaming laptop, not because anything else but MSI still refuses to update the aging chasis. With the space for a 2.5 drive remaining but they can’t be arsed to accomodate for a larger battery inside.

Coupled with a low colour gamut (53% srgb omegalul) 1080p screen, this speaks anything but a deal.
