575

I was looking around for a new credit card and came across this one. Not a huge fan of bank rewards programs, but points can be converted to 90,000 velocity or alternatively a minimum $800 gift cards.

Offer:

Earn 180,000 extra ANZ Reward Points and get $150 back to your new ANZ Rewards Black card when you spend $3,000 on eligible purchases in the first 3 months from approval. T&Cs apply.

Card Features:

  • Earn 2 ANZ Reward Points for every $1 spent up to and including $5,000 per statement period.
  • Earn 1 ANZ Reward Point for every $1 spent over $5,000 per statement period on eligible purchases.
  • 20.24% p.a. interest rate on purchases.
  • Minimum credit limit of $15,000.

Annual Fee: $375

Mod: Previous post 4/1/23 (Duplicate exception, more than 6 months old). It was also changed from 150k to 180k points on 4/5/23. This deal has been marked as long expiry as no expiry date is listed, to avoid the deal auto expiring after 45 days. Incorrect annual fee corrected. Cashback amount is not a discount on annual fee.

not sure where you are getting your rates from
      ANZ points
Velocity 2:1 coverts to 90,000 points
Krisflyer 3:1 coverts to 60,000 points

  • Can it be converted to Qantas Frequent Flyer points? If so what’s the conversion?

  • +5

Nothing new, been like that for a very long time. Plus I don’t recommend ANZ anyways

  • +3

If you wait when transfering to Velocity you can get a 15% bonus. They usually run the promo 3-4 times per year, see here: https://www.pointhacks.com.au/velocity/transfer-bonus-promot…

  • I had this one. ANZ doesn’t really give you much of rewards. CBA Awards is much better.

    • Please explain

      • CBA gives you rewards every month on expenditures in shops like Coles, dominos, etc… for instance, i just received an offer ‘ spend $200 in coles to receive $10 cash back’. This happens very frequently. However, I never received any of that from ANZ.

        • ANZ also have cashback - they have teamed up with cashrewards, and they also get bonus cashback. Plus you get sometimes upwards of 120,000 qantas points. Keep in mind CBA cards that give rewards cost upwards of $395 a year, so you would need to get cash back of nearly $400 a year to break even.

          • +1

@onlinepred: Nah, I never received any cash back rewards from ANZ. And I paid $59 annual fee last year for my CBA credit card

            • +3

@Neil2016: Just because you didn't use it doesn't mean they weren't there. ANZ have cashback rewards, discounts, bonus cashbacks, and better value cards if you want points.
The $59 card gets the lowest points per spend of most cards. (0.4 Qantas Points per dollar)

        • +7

The purpose of this is to get the 180,000 in the first month, convert to gift cards and close the card immediately after. Don't worry about the monthly offers, who cares about $10 when you clean up $600 and move on …

  • Its okay, but there are much better offers out there imho.

    • +1

Care to share whats better at the moment please.

      • It really depends what you want to get out of the card, this one is a jack of all trades master of none. I would recommend doing research on what exactly you plan to use the card for and buy one suited to that. For example I use a platinum edge amex for groceries, bills and filling the car up because I get 3 points per dollar spent, I wouldn't use it for purchases outside of that because the card weakens a fair bit as far as benefits goes.

This is why they add that little disclaimer on every financial based advert - read the PDS available blah blah blah, main thing to take away from it is you should do your research and base that on your own situation and spending habits.

        • +4

This is a churner, get the 180k, get the gift cards, close the card. $595 profit.

          • +1

@cook99: Ah now that makes sense, I am not that deep in the ozbargain game yet lol

        • Amex devaluation now makes 3:1 basically 1:1..at best. Amex time is done, cancelling mine this year.

    • Like which?

    • Got this one as I've already churned through the usual suspects and not really collecting velocity, so decided might as well start getting some cashbacks and gift cards since those aren't usually part of the frequent flyer exclusion conditions.

Also interesting that ANZ offer the option of straight cash back if you can't be bothered converting into $800 worth of giftcards, though with the con of being $80 less.

  • This deal has already been posted https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/749469

    • +1

yeah, there is nothing new about this 'deal'

  • compare with NAB Rewards Signature Card, which offer is better?
    https://www.nab.com.au/personal/credit-cards/offers/rewards-…

    • +1

That NAB card is 100,000 points initially then another 40,000 points after 12 months.

I don't remember the conversion rate for NAB points but I would be assuming 180k ANZ points trumps 100k NAB points. Even after taking into account ANZ annual fee is $30 more (first year).

    • ANZ works out almost twice as good.

Check here for all the hard work already done for you.
      ANZ profit: $595
      NAB Profit $325

    Whats the minimum income requirement?

    • I've been rejected at 100k but someone here said it's likely because I already bank with ANZ

  • RElinking to this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/601060#comment-13635077 for anyone considering a limited stint on an ANZ credit card.

  • Has anyone used it to book a trip to earn the points and get travel insurance, then cancel the card after getting their points. But the trip is for a date after they cancelled the insurance, the insurance will still be in effect right?

    • In their booklet:
You are not covered for any claim made after termination of, or the expiry of, the period of insurance specified in the group policy.

      • Thanks. If I understand correctly this means that when we apply for the free travel insurance, we specify the travel dates and therefore the insurance is in effect regardless of whether we cancel the card

  • How much yearly income you need to have to apply ?

$1000 spend, 600$ return in flybys cash or 550$ gift cards.. $95 annual fee.

Terrible application process. Gets sent to offshore processing centre who have no understanding of finances. Had over 10 calls with different reps over 6 weeks because none of them stored the records correctly, asking the same questions and showing a general lack of understanding of how money works. Local branches could not help me and told me they don't have access to the application system, 3 complaints filed, all ignored. Could not withdraw application and had to report to AFCA to get ANZ to finally leave me alone. A credit check and hours of my time wasted all to learn - ANZ never again.

    • +1

I've never had an issue with ANZ but I guess it's a bit of luck who processes the application.

    • +1

I've done 4 cards with ANZ over last few years no major hassles that I can recall.
Sorry your application was so bad, sounds awful if you get a bad loop of bad service 😔

    • +2

Yeah, I tried to apply for an ANZ card this morning and got an instant rejection, for no apparent reason even though I could pay the card off multiple times over with just savings.
tried to contact to ask for a reason as to why, and was just told that I'll get a letter in the mail.
Applied for an NAB card after that and was accepted within minutes, no mucking around or anything.
Just not worth mucking around with ANZ, especially when my credit rating will likely now show I was rejected by them.

      • +1

I could pay the card off multiple times over with just savings.

Credit card applications seemingly care very little about savings or assets, which is why it can be unreasonably difficult for retirees to get approved.

Unfortunately the institutions are not forced to disclose their reasons, which is pretty poor.

my credit rating will likely now show I was rejected by them.

Credit histories show enquiries, not approvals or rejections.

      • This happened to me as well, near instant rejection. The letter they sent was basically saying they couldn't say why I was rejected lol
Do you already bank with ANZ? Someone here said that could be the reason why..

    • Precisely this. The operators say different things to each other and don’t understand basics such as plus or excluding super.

The complaints team did look into it and then tried to assist. All in all unless you have ongoing payg work look elsewhere

  • +4

ANZ credit card team are hopeless - made multiple credit enquiries for 1 card therefore messing with the credit score - MUPPETS

    • Exact same thing happened when I applied for a home loan with them. It was such a long drawn out process. Half of them had no idea what they were doing and they did 3 credit enquires against me while they fumbled around professing the application.

That was 2 years ago and their excuse was COVID but clearly they haven’t improved.

  • +4

Yup, Out of all the Cards i have gone through, ANZ was by far the worst experience.

  • +1

I churn quite a bit and can confirm ANZ are the worst by far, in terms of processing applications. A necessary pain though for those sweet rewards points.

  • -1

Strangely I had zero issues on my last Black application last August. Whole thing went very smoothly.

Closed it last October so a couple of months before I can apply again.

    • Yeah. Things have changed at ANZ. A lot.

  • ANZ credit card assessment team used to be good years ago.
    Now they are ABSOLUTELY HOPELESS.
Now the credit card assessment team is in India. Completely incompetent. They have no idea of Australian finance or taxation rules.
Most of them you cannot understand what they are saying as they cannot speak english.
And to top it all off they are rude and arrogant.
If you want to waste your time and send them all the paperwork they keep asking for (every time you speak with them they need more) go ahead, but you have been warned.
And yes, as someone mentioned, if you go to your branch to sort it out they are very apologetic because they know what a sh!tshow the assessment team are. But they cannot do anything.
ANZ is going down the drain. Like so many other companies' customer service in Australia!
    Rant over.

    • Same experience on the lack of knowledge of finance here such as plus superannuation and self employed

  • I applied a few hours ago, and my application was approved in less than two hours, followed by an online ID check that was just completed with no hassle.

    • +2

yeh, that's usually my experience with anz.
      easy and no problem.

however, I don't think this is a particularly great deal, but there isn't much around at the moment in terms of offers.

For the same annual fee you can get 120k velocity with westpac.

    • did you upload any docs?
      I received this email.
" We will be in touch shortly, and may ask you for any further documentation we may need based on your circumstances."

      • Yes, uploaded 3 months payslips, as part of the application

  • Does anyone know if the annual fee can be refunded for ANZ? I recall that they stopped doing this?

    • Did you end up getting refund at all?

      • +1

I haven't cancelled card yet. Only hot the 5k spend recently! Will let you know

  • Last time I applied, they asked me for the same documents that I sent in the initial application three times, apparently always missing my email replies.

    • same, happened to me too. Just follow up with them should be fine.

  • Hey guys, am I still elegible for this if I have an ANZ Frequent Flyer Black Visa card as well? Is it correct that the Frequent Flyer Black is different to the Rewards Black card?

  • Hi guys, new to this and looking to get a credit card. Just wondering if I join up and just spend the 3k on my council rates and buying a few things online I'll be able to to get the bonus points and then I can just cancel the card?

    • Generally speaking, most (/all) credit cards will exclude government payments in that initial spend bonus and only count all other purchases to the card. Although, many people find work around to this with the use of Beem / DEFT or the like for their rates/rent etc. I used Beem to pay off my HECS (ATO) debt sometime ago to get the points - although I think they’ve closed this loophole since.

  • They denied my multiple requests for a prorata refund of annual fee. Anyone else experience this?

  • Applied on Wednesday evening and was approved Thursday afternoon. I did have to physically go into the ANZ branch to do an ID verification in person (a first, and I’ve held ANZ credit card accounts before). Hopefully card arrives without me needing to chase this up, although the bloke in the branch said “it should happen, call Friday if you haven’t heard anything”. Not exactly confidence inspiring.

  • Made the 3k spend. How long before the points hit my velocity account?

    • Did yo already manually convert it through the anzrewards website portal?

    • How long it it take for you at the end?

      • 12/8! Auto conversion "as many points as possible"

  • For some reason it's not giving me points for my paypal transactions for postbillpay bills. Points for later purchases have already been allocated so it doesn't appear to be a processing time issue. Did they finally catch on to this loophole it seems?

    • Hi, did your bonus points eventually come through using this method? Looking for a way to pay my council rates so it counts to the minimum spend.

      • Nope never came through so I ended up having to divert some spending from another card in order to make up the min spend for this one. Guess they've simply figured out non-retail paypal payments even though the postbillpay ones have been marked "AP" on the balance statements since inception. The only free method left seem to be bpay through zippay, otherwise gotta cop the 1.5% fees through SNIIP.

        • Banks don't use names to determine eligible spend but rather the Merchant Category Code (MCC). I'm guessing you tried to pay a government service.

When you pay with Paypal, they pass the real MCC of the merchant to your Card Issuer. They've been doing this for a while now.
PostBillPay will do this too it seems (Pass MCC to Paypal), though that is possibly a more recent thing for them.

          • @wangasm:

They've been doing this for a while now.

Well I've been using it for years now and having it count government/council bills as eligible for the minimum payment requirement, it's only with my 2 most recent cards where it seems to finally stop counting for both points and minimum spend.

            • @johnjones8: A better workaround is to purchase the Prepaid MC/Vanilla Visa cards from Coles with your credit card when they're on sale, then use those to pay govt/council bills.

  • Anyone know if I can get this one after having the Anz Velocity?

    • From their T&Cs:

ensure if applying for an offer, you don’t currently hold and haven’t opened or closed an ANZ Rewards Black, ANZ Rewards Platinum, ANZ Rewards Travel Adventure or an ANZ Rewards credit card in the last 12 months and meet all other offer eligibility criteria.

  • Made an enquiry om whether the annual fee could be refunded. Not sure if they'll do it…

"You can discuss it further with our Credit Card Closures specialists as per our Terms and Conditions, under Clause 16.c of the Conditions Of Use states (c) Any annual or other periodic fees are charged for the relevant year or period or any part of it. This means, unless we agree otherwise, that we will not refund them once paid, even if a Credit Card is cancelled or your Credit Card Account is closed."

    • Just called ANZ. They confirmed no pro rata refund where points have been earned. I.e. if you make the spend and receive 90k velocity points, the annual fee will NOT be refunded, nor will it be refundee pro rata.

      Damn.

  • Does anyone know how long the application process usually takes? Applied 10 days ago, got an email immediately to say thank you for your application, we will be in touch shortly and havent heard a thing since?

    • +1

I had mine in limbo for half a week after I sent my payslips so I emailed them for an update. I was then approved later that day so it's worth contacting them though YMMV.

  • +2

I got approved on 26/7 and then met the minimum spend on 14/8. My statement was generated on 14/8 and my points were in my ANZ rewards account on 25/8. Just asked for the annual refund today and they provided it.

    • Cool. What number did you call? Did you close first then asked them?

      • I called up using the in-app button and asked the rep. I said I wanted to switch to the FF black card and asked if they could offer a pro-rata annual fee refund. They offered a product transfer but I just said I'd prefer to close the card first and sign up on a new account.

        • Can you get bonus points on ff black after this card straight away?

    • when did you get the $150 cashback?

  • -1

Rubbish application process. Avoid ANZ at all cost.

  • Applied yesterday and the process was unexpectedly quick. It got approved today.

    • ha, surprising here as well. Never been easy like this before with ANZ. Applied yesterday night (Sunday) and approved today afternoon.

      • I did not have any bad experience before, but this time i received the card after 3 business days.
