    Come on atv3 jailbreak….

    • -2

      OUYA > atv3 + jb

      • +6

OUYA = vaporware atm, could be the next DNF for all we know
EDIT: I do hope that it gets released soon though because it could/will be awesome :D

        • alright, I will admit I'm not an Apple fan, and I love games.
I'm too getting impatient about the March next year delivery date.
          AND I'm biased… proudly to be. :D

        • Vapourware…? Even though they received an overwhelming response on kickstarter, have more than enough funding, and have promised a March 2013 date?

I wouldn't call it vapourware. Not in the slightest. Don't compare it to DNF - the guys behind Ouya seem legitimately interested in making this happen, and keeping the community closely involved throughout the process.

They've already taken people's money, they're not just going to run off with it.

Oh and I wouldn't touch the ATV with a 10-foot pole. There's one in my house and I stay as far away from it as possible. Admittedly, the one cool thing it does is let my Dad stream photos onto the TV from his iPhone. But that's about it. And of course it's only ever going to be useful if all you own are Apple products.

        • Vaporware definition from Google: Software or hardware that has been advertised but is not yet available to buy, either because it is only a concept or because it is still being written or designed.

        • So what. By that definition any product up for pre-order is vapourware because you can't buy it yet? Sound logic right there.

There's a difference between a teased concept and something that actually has a confirmed release date, along with prototypes, funding, confirmed partners (i.e. gaming companies, XBMC) and the full backing of devs.

        • -2

OUYA is very much vaporware. They have no history of design, development or dealing with manufacturers. Their office is P.O. Box behind a gas station. They don't even have a fully working prototype & you expect them to make the March release date?

          http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2407046,00.asp

        • I think you (and the article you linked) totally missed the point.
Ever heard of "Risk Management"? Rarely any concept as amazing as OUYA is for a certain. They should never be taken for granted.
Pure pessimism isn't gonna get you anywhere.

  • Not even a jailbreak would make it worthwhile.

    • -4

It could be a cardboard box with an apple logo and people would still pay for it.

      • -6

I doubt that. but you made a good point.

        • -1

hmm… at least 5 people would pay for it? I'm intrigued!

  • Love this thing. Makes streaming all my content from the PC to the TV so very easy, much better than carting around usb sticks or messing with windows in a media centre.

There are a few apps, but I think air video server is the best.

    • +2

so easy? Apart from the fact that all your media needs converting/transcoding to make it work, wasting a ton of power and resulting in loss of quality as you transcode from one media to another

      • +1

Not on the ATV1&2 with XBMC!

        • +1

"this" thing would be an ATV3.

      • +7

Not sure you understand how this works entirely. The converting is done live, it's seamless.

I scroll the movies (stored on my PC) via my ipad or iPhone, select the movie and it plays on the TV instantly. Couldn't get easier!

As for quality, it streams at 720p, 2560kbps, more than sufficient for most people. Goes over 5000 if you have fast enough network/PC.

And using a ton of power? Well the CPU gets fair use while transcoding obviously, similar to playing a game. That wouldn't stop you gaming though would it?

No point in the hating fellas :) everyone's entitled to their opinion.

        • -4

if i have a really fast pc would it go puts sunglasses on over 9000!

        • +1

Why would you want to use 2 devices to do single device job?

        • It's a strange question, as I don't "want" to use two devices, it just so happens that way, but regardless I'll answer…

It's not really two devices, as the pc is a fileserver and always running anyway - but ignoring that..

For a single device the options are WDTV, which is a great choice also but has different strengths, or a media centre which also has different strengths. Neither of them are as easy or user friendly as the apple tv, but the WDTV comes very close.

I also have a media centre pc by the way. A totally different prospect to an apple tv.

        • +1

When your PC is doing the decoding, you can hardly use it for anything else serious, like playing BF3. That's the main problem I have with this setup. (I have a decent PC btw)

        • Cause the control is much better with iPhone/iPad. Anyway, with some other devices, you'd need a good keyboard (or mouse) to make it trully usable, hence you end up with 2 devices as well (albeit only keyboard, but same way as using iPad as keyboard, right?). Everyone has their own taste, I'm happy with my ATV and iPad configuration.
My only issue with ATV, is only a few apps can do full screen due to ratio differences between iPad resolution and TV.

      • You obviously dont understand what the jailbreak does nor do the 4 voters you got.

  • If I don't have a Mac, and don't plan on buying movies, how is this better than WIDI?

    • If this were jailbreakable, it would be amazing.

Its not jailbreakable, so is far from ideal.

  • Can i watch free channels from this device like set top box?

    • +3

No, except for abc news 24. It does have iview which is great though.

The store on it is ridiculous ($$$) but if you have tons of cash (ie not ozbargainer!) it would be extremely convenient.

      • ty for your comment and yea if i had tons of cash wouldn't be here ;)
Any good set top you can suggest?
        thanx

      • +1

When did apple tv get iview app? Can you share any web link confirming your claim?

        • +1

I guess ibfragalot is talking about iview app on your iphone or ipad and streaming it on Apple TV…

        • Edit: yeah, I think it may have been on the iPad streaming to the Apple TV now I think about it… (iView) !

  • If you change the region on this to US and use a VPN you can subscribe to hulu/Netflix which is great value, otherwise its a lemon.

    • Can do the same with a WD TV Live streamer which is $88 at the moment as less restrictive than the Apple TV…

      • +1

the apple has support for hulu/netflix built in, no firmware/flashing required.

  • I bought a refurb from the Apple Online Store for $95, ships free (and still available now). Remote and the unit appears to be brand new. Only difference I can see that it's a used model is from the power cable. It came wrapped in the same packaging as the new ones too. Had to be reset coz it somehow connect to my wifi, but after that it works perfectly.

I use Airplay most of the time to push videos/music from my mac/iPhone to the tv. And got a toslink to analogue converter on ebay to connect to decent speakers :) And this way if you play music you don't need to have the TV on.

    • Apple's refurbs always have a new exterior hence why they look new.. the insides however are not.. should that make any difference? not really, but it makes a difference to some people..

      • +1

you can dress up a pig but it's still a pig

  • crazy the apple tv 2 2nd hand (jb ofcourse) can sell for near $200 on ebay
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Apple-TV-2nd-Gen-Jailbroken-firmw…
    should i sell mine? hehehe

    • Crikey, some people. Do they pay so much because they are afraid to do the JB themselves, or are the old versions just now available anywhere else anymore?

    • Yep. Sell it and hope for ATV3 JB!

  • i have sold 2 apple tv 2s for $250 on ebay
wish i had more of them

  • Have not had much to do with these but wondering if the Google android ics media box is a better option? pros/cons over apple tv?

  • I wouldn't be caught with another Apple TV. Extremely laggy, frequent connection problems, and AirPlay Mirroring would scale to about 1/4 of the size of my 32" TV. Useless.

    • I am not sure if you are even using your apple tv 3 properly.
I have been using one for 3 months now connected through wired ethernet connection.
      - Air play mirroring from my Mac book air (Mountain Lion) is flawless.
      - Video play of a BDMV image through 'Beamer App' works as well without any lag
      - Even airplay from ipad (Dailymotion, Vimeo and Youtube HD content is again flawless)

      Regarding screen real estate…

Agree that you don't get full screen mirroring if you are air mirroring your Ipad as not all apps are airplay compatible but that is a problem with ipad apps.

I am not an apple fan boy but got one as a gift.

All I can say is…if you are after one then ATM this is a good deal.

      • +1

Just like iPhone 4 users with connection problems weren't 'holding their phones properly'? Why is it with Apple devices that it's, purportedly, always the user's fault, never the device's? Maybe CMI's device was faulty. Maybe it wasn't compatible with some aspect of his setup. It should never be assumed that it is the user's fault first, and device's second.

      • Sorry, Smarter Fool, I forgot that you were there and that you know everything about what was happening. Also, I'll have you know that there is no difference between mirroring from an Apple app (mail, safari etc) compared to a 3rd party app (angry birds, facebook etc). Saying 'some applications are not airplay compatible' is incorrect.

  • This frequently goes on sale. It's technology so prices are expected to fall a little notwithstanding it's apple. The price is $10 off and there have been better deals of late. I wish there was a mediocre vote. I'm sure my vote will get revoked but not really a bargain imo.

  • Isn't this their standard price?

    • Standard price is $109.

    • For an OzBargainer's intents and purposes, yes. Nothing 'special' about this.

  • Could anymore recommend a similarly priced device with these features? i.e. stream media from a home server. one post had the wd live tv streamer for $88, any links?
