Samsung PM991a 1TB PCIe Gen3 NVMe M.2 2230 SSD US$51.67 (~A$79.18) Delivered @ AIiExpress Storage Store, AliExpress

140

A record low price on this Samsung M.2 2230 sized SSD that's perfect for upgrading the storage in the 64GB Steam Deck. It's also suitable for the ASUS ROG Ally, Surface Pro 9, 8, 7+ X, Surface Laptop 3, 4, Go and Surface Book 3.

Alternatively you can pick up the WD SN740 SSD instead, however the Steam Deck runs at Gen3 speeds so you won't see a big difference in speed with the Gen4 SSD. The other advantage of the SN740 is that it's available in 2TB.

AU$ based on current Mastercard rate, GST inclusive and stacks with cashback.

  • Why are 2230 SSDs so hard to find in normal stores?

    • +3

Because the form factor is really only designed for OEM. All of these are extracted from other devices (ie. old Surface Pro's, laptops etc). Even the SN740 is an OEM-only product. Everyone selling them are reselling the drives they'll have bought in bulk from WD as an OEM.

    • +1

I'd assume it is because most devices that use them are in situations where the manufacturer does not consider it user replaceable (steamdeck is the exception here), and for home built pc's, 2280's make more sense, so there is just not enough reason to spend money on retail packaging and marketing outside of OEM's.

    • +3

They're a really niche size but that should improve with the Steam Deck popularity. PLE for example now stock the Corsair MP600 MINI 1TB Gen 4 SSD for a whopping $199 or the Micron 2400 2TB Gen 4 SSD from JW for $299.

Yeah, pretty much for this reason I went to Aliexpress and bought a WD 1TB for my steamdeck. Works as advertised. Then been upvoting most of Clears 2230 deals as they are decent, and lots of folks are lost with this form factor.

  • Not sure I'd trust the store:

      • +1

        I prefer Smasnug.

      • If its not legit Samson drives. I dont bother.

        • +2

I only buy Samsonite drives to put all my stuff in

    • *note: Drives are sold by Sam Sung, any confusion with Samsung brand is on the buyer

  • Thanks op, been looking for a decent priced gen3 for my surface pro 8, shame they havent be updated drivers to handle gen4 properly.

Even now I’m not sure if this drive will work, fingers crossed I didn’t waste $80 lol

Have this ssd in my surface pro 7+ and works fine.

  • The Power brick that came with the Steam Deck has a European plug(?) What is the equivalent for our local plug? That or just simply buy an adaptor?

    • The Steam Deck uses standard USB-C PD - just use another charger.

  • 15 Sold …

  • It’s showing $85.95 in final checkout with tax included and free shipping.. Did the price expire?

    • Yeah. I'm expecting another AliExpress sale this month so it'll return.
