Almost booked with Qantas. Glad I waited for this.

    great airline.

    • how's the booking company - 'Flightfinderau' - never heard of - watch your money fly by night ?

      • not sure. i've always booked direct with the airline, sure this may save a couple of $$ but its easier to sort out any issues with the airline directly instead of booking through a 3rd party.

  • pretty good pricing for cherry blossom season

    • +3

Not quite. Good timing for plum season though!

  • Just booked with ana … Slightly cheaper price.. really looking forward to a holiday again

    • +1

ANA is also a great airline!

Japan has also recently dropped its requirements for vaccination certificates. Also a fantastic time to visit, went in April this year and it was amazing, the temptation is incredibly strong right now.

  • Terrible status credits for QFF but great airline

    • I don't think economy is ever worth it for status anyway

Bullet train 7 day pass is going upto 50k yen, about $555. Might want to factor in.

    • +2

There are other passes available which can be used that will make it a lot cheaper than the new JR Pass prices

    • +1

I'd suggest looking at local passes (A little bit of an increase but not as much) and just buying tickets outright as one good thing about train travel in Japan is it costs the same if you buy tickets 20 minutes out or 2 months out (A Nozomi from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka is ¥14,920, one way). Remember passes don't really even work out now for in city travel as I did a trip from around Ueno to Disneyland on JR, and it was a few hundred yen and that was almost 20kms.

JR Pass beyond buying in October and using past February will probably only be worth it for very long trips. I'd probably suggest domestic airlines for longer trips and another option I did last December was a ferry, which was good too (Did Hokkaido to Oarai, 100km away from Tokyo)

    • If you're able to fly out of Osaka then I think the best way to do the golden route (Tokyo -> Kyoto -> Osaka + Hiroshima day trip) is probably Tokyo -> Kyoto single ticket bullet train and get either the 5 day Kansai + Hiroshima pass or the 8 day JR West All Area pass.

  • Is it feasible at all that April 2024 would ever have sales? Trying to buy tickets and they're always showing up as 1.8k+ for non-stop (April 4 - 27) and it's making me sad :( Should I just suck it up and pay that amount, or will the price decrease eventually?

    • +2

That's Easter? Very unlikely. Before and after Easter should see similar prices

      • Ah that sucks, but thank you for letting me know - very much appreciated

    • +2

      doubt it.
peak season. easter / school holidays. prices will prob increase so best to bite the bullet.

      • I managed to get Mar 9 - 5 April on JAL for ~$1080 in the sale a few months ago. I think you can play around with the dates, and if you can leave in March prior to the school holidays it will save some $$

    • Ana had return tickets for around $1000 for dates leaving Apr 16 and later. Not sure if sold out now but was there on Monday.

    • +1

I honestly think that's as best as you're gonna get, and Qantas is no cheaper either. I checked around a similar set of dates, and was surprised to see direct JAL from Melbourne is gone.

      • Yeah.. I'm so sad because about two months ago I checked and they were $1550 for a non-stop flight on JAL - should've just bought it then and there but I thought it'd have been too early to book and the price would go down but since then it's just been going up and up. :(

  • Any chance prices will go even lower for JAL or ANA closer to March? Or are these prices already pretty good?

    • $100 question! Prices are trending down and therefore It's possible it may drop further.

    • Hoping the same, $800 and I'll be more than happy.

  • ANA showing as $858 for SYD <> HND

    Never BRIS Zzz

    • Never BANE

  • Do people just book with these resellers to get the listed prices or pay a bit extra to go via the airline? Also, is it optimal to land in the evening or try to sleep on the plane and get there in the morning?

    • +2

Would personally do the latter. As for landing time, I'd rather land in the evening. Arrive, have quick dinner, straight to sleep in a proper bed instead of a meh at best sleep on a plane.

    • i've always booked direct. should any issues easier chance of sorting it out direct with them instead of 3rd party.

i've usually flown overnight, sleep on the plane and get there in the morning. personal preference so you might want to do the opposite.

  • Any good fare for Business Class in that period?

  • Anything for mid-Jan to mid-Feb 2024?

    • +1

Nothing atm. Will keep an eye out though.

      • Love your work mate
