12 Months Free NBN 50/20Mbps For Eligible Nominated Families @ School Student Broadband Initiative, Australian Government

1569

I came across this whilst browsing Exetel's website. I know a lot of people wouldn't really consider this a deal, but thought it was worth sharing anyway.

From the Australian Government's Department of Infrastructure website:

To boost education opportunities and narrow the digital divide, the Australian Government is working with NBN Co to provide up to 30,000 families with no internet at home free NBN for 12 months.

To be eligible, families with school age children will be nominated by participating schools, education authorities and charities/community organisations. These organisations will identify and provide information directly to families within their respective systems about the initiative.

The first families were connected during Term One in 2023. The one-year of free service begins from the day the service is activated for each family.

The Government is supporting NBN Co’s implementation and delivery of this initiative with a $4.5 million grant. This is a targeted affordability initiative while the Government considers longer-term solutions to address digital exclusion and education.

Who is eligible to receive free services?

To qualify to apply for the SSBI program, a family must:

  • have a child living at home that is enrolled in an Australian school (up to Year 12 including Prep in QLD/VIC/TAS, Kindy in NSW, Reception in SA, Transition in NT/ACT and Pre-Primary in WA)
  • not have an active nbn network internet service at home - having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility
  • live in a premises that can access the nbn network via a standard connection
  • not have had an active nbn connection during the previous 14 days

List of participating nominating organisations. In addition, Federal Members of Parliament and Senators are able to identify and nominate eligible families.

Edit 23/10/23:

To check your eligibility, follow these simple steps.

Contact the National Referral Centre, operated by Anglicare Victoria, on 1800 954 610 (Mon-Fri, 10am-6pm AEDT) or at www.anglicarevic.org.au/student-internet.
The National Referral Centre team will help assess your eligibility for the SSBI, by checking several things including your residential address and current financial situation.
If eligible, you will be issued a voucher which can be redeemed at any of the participating SSBI retail service providers. The National Referral Centre will also be available to assist with contacting your SSBI retail service provider of choice and providing follow-up support.

Update 29/01/2025

The duration of the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI), an Australian Government program, has been extended until 30 June 2028.

Families and carers already connected to a nbn SSBI service through the program will be automatically extended#, while those with unredeemed vouchers are encouraged to contact a participating internet provider to connect to the program.

Once the program reaches the cap of 30,000 SSBI services connected, no further nominations will be accepted by participating internet providers, and any unredeemed vouchers will become invalid.

With over 23,000 free nbn SSBI services already provided by participating internet providers through the program, this extension means families and carers can continue to benefit from this cost-saving initiative for an additional two and a half years.

Additionally, qualifying families and carers who have not yet participated now have more time to take advantage of the program, either by redeeming an existing voucher or applying for one - with the nomination period being extended until 31 December 2025, unless the cap of 30,000 services is reached earlier.

It is expected an automatic extension will apply if the family's participating SSBI internet provider decides to be part of SSBI after the end of 2025. nbn is considering alternative arrangements where a participating internet provider decides not to continue past the initial period end date of 31 December 2025, and those arrangements may involve the family selecting a new participating internet provider.

A list of participating internet providers is available at School Student Broadband Initiative.

School Student Broadband Initiative extended to mid-2028.

This is a great deal. Some of you are a bit out of touch. I know some families who rely on just local library internet. This will be useful.

    • -3

I know some families who rely on just local library internet.

Do they read OzBargain? If so, send them the link to the forums to find out about more government welfare services that are available.

      • Thanks, I don't check forums, so this was useful!
And no they do not read this site.

        • -1

          so this was useful!

          How is it useful?
Even if they did read it in their local library, it does not change anything. It's not as if they can apply for this.

          • @jv: It's useful as I can refer them to the school district so they can look into it. We weren't aware of this until today

          • +1

@jv: Because someone who does read it might know someone who does and get the ball rolling. You really have won the world's biggest knob contest on this post.

      • +2

Jeez give it a rest. Report it and move on, let the mods move it if they agree.

        • -2

          Jeez give it a rest

          Why?

  • Thanks OP!

What is needed to be "referred by a nominating organisation"? Is one's income tested? Has anyone tried this?

    • -1

Is one's income tested? Has anyone tried this?

      Who knows?

      No details have been posted.

It is a pointless post, not a bargain. Belongs in the forums.

    • no , they don’t look at income it looks at if you have school age kids and no active nbn but a charity has to refer you as you can’t just apply for it

  • +4

Everyone upvoting this "deal" because of the feel good factor. Bring back the ruthless bargain seekers.

    • Indeed!

  • +5

The strange part about this initiative is that that in QLD it's Brisbane Catholic education that has to refer a student. Don't Catholic schools charge a fee for education? It would seem to make more sense to be able to offer this to assistance to kids in the state school system in low-socioeconomic areas.

    • +1

      Yes I saw that.

    • +2

Catholic Schools will still enrol students who are unable to afford school fees

    • +1

They charge a fee and get more government funding than public schools - it's the same for all private schools, most of them church based.

  • +1

Perfect for single mothers covered in tats with a bin overflowing with takeaway food, winfield blue packets and premix jim beam white and cola cans, that are doing it tough

    • Perfect for single mothers

What, you saying your mum's dumped me? 😭

      • Look,we all know you'd never cheat on your mum.

        • She kicked the bucket last year, I'm a free man!

    • wow

  • +3

Or perhaps instead the newly arrived immigrant family who are fleeing persecution from overseas with no financial means and living in a housing commission.

    (as my family once were)

Regardless of whatver the posting rules are, it was worthwhile to bring to attention those who may benefit from the scheme who are much less privledged compared to everyone else.

Everyone else who wants this post removed are really cold hearted people.

And yes, remarkably believe it or not, not being able to afford nbn does happen in this country because people have to prioritise for food and shelter.

Everyone who reports or places a negative comment here really is just looking to

    • +5

Seems like you have a chip on your shoulder which is blinding you from seeing that Ozbargain has posting rules and guidelines to adhere to.

Post aren't made for people to feel good.

      • +1

It’s not a chip on the shoulder, it’s the provision of context RE what is useful for people.

If you’re trying to say that posts advertising the saving of as little as $1 are more worthy, then you may need to think things through a little deeper.

And if it comes down to what the rules permit, then the obvious conclusion is that the rules need to be reviewed.

And if they don’t get reviewed, then I can’t wait to see more of those amazing “spend $500 and get $3 cashback!” posts… /s

        • +4

If you’re trying to say that posts advertising the saving of as little as $1 are more worthy

They are if they are bargains.

This is just a public service announcement of government welfare payments. It is not a bargain.

          • +7

@jv: And your stream of comments don’t help with identifying or advertising bargains, yet they are tolerated on this site…

If you’re such a stickler for the rules, then perhaps start limiting your posts only to comments that are helpful for understanding more about bargains. Arguably, a lot of your comments constitute spam.

            • @wormarts:

limiting your posts only to comments that are helpful for understanding more about bargains.

That is exactly why I commented in this thread.

              • @jv:

That is exactly why I commented in this thread.

All 49 of them (so far)?

                Give us a break.

            • -1

              @wormarts:

              your comments constitute spam.

I'm not advertising anything. Are you?

          • @jv: Its not a payment. Its a free bargain

            • +1

              @Geoff01:

              Its not a payment.

It's a government welfare payment, and not free, you need to be paying Catholic school fees.

      • +3

Seems like you have a chip on your shoulder which is blinding you from seeing that Ozbargain has posting rules and guidelines to adhere to.

I guarantee you that most people that are voting negatively are doing so becauase they themselves cannot benefit from the deal, and not because they care about the posting rules and guidelines.

    • a newly arrived family should not be given housing commission over australian citizens that usually have to wait 15 plus years to get a housing commission place

  • +2

To be eligible students must be nominated by a participating school/charity/education dept. The only participating entity in Queensland is CathEd. Seems like a way to further funnel government money towards private entities they like.

  • +4

Sorry OP, should be in the forums.
This is not a deal and unattainable.

  • +3

If you need to be explicitly referred to by an organisation within this program, then the communication obviously needs to come from them.

Posting this on ozbargain does nothing.

  • I'm a childish student of life!

  • +4

Not really attainable as some have pointed out, more of a psa… so not a deal in my view. Forum material, but doubt the mods care as they see it as a bit of a popularity contest these days.

  • +6

Not a deal, it’s welfare and unobtainable to a deal seeker. And do not misuse this government scheme through religious/affiliated organisation.

  • -1

yeah these community help + targeted deals = 'spicy' deals
more likely belongs to forums. = free is a good deal

    • +1

= free is a good deal

      Not free.

You need to pay to go to a catholic school that then nominates you.

      • Not everyone

        • +1

In QLD and WA you need to be nominated by a Catholic school

          • @jv: Or foundation housing

            • +1

@Geoff01: You need to pay for that too…

      • Not anymore. Can self-nominate.

  • +6

Not a deal, welfare benefit. Should be in the forum.

  • +4

Not a deal. Not attainable, and there are eligible families/schools/ogranisations that have applied for this and not yet gotten this discount (thanks to NBN restricted requirements around eligibility, resourcing related matters, and other issues). It's a great initiative when it works, but not a deal. More a forum post as others have pointed out.

  • +3

Not a deal, move to the forums. Welfare is not a deal.

Edited to comply with the "rules"

  • +4

Not a deal, information about welfare payments.

  • +1

Good to know where my tax is being spent…

  • Brilliant initiative if it reaches the right students.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Tried to enquire about earlier this year but catholic school weren't helpful staff knew nothing about it. Went to MP office staff didnt know but reached out to nbn which have now sent them a voucher. Finally can get a fixed line nbn connection other rather than depending on 4g. So now need to decide which ISP to go with that has the best modem? I think its a toss up between Superloop has the Zte and eero 6+ modem with no credit check a referral program and Vodafone have the hub 3.0 modem with 4g sim backup.? Both are wifi 6 however not sure if the Vodafone modem is sim card network locked and they may do a credit check? Btw Does anyone know how many of the 30k spots have been taken up? I have 3 x boost sim data packs to use so i wonder if i should risk waiting to redeem the voucher since offer ends 30 September or i might miss out if the take up is nearing the 30k limit?

    • does the free nbn offer run out in september

  • Yes ends sep 30th. Another one know if covers the new development fee?

  • extended to 30 April 2024

  • Extended to 31 Dec 2025

  • I got my voucher.
The choices in my area are
    - Superloop with free amazon aero modem (rrp $250)
    - Activ8me
    - Vodafone with wifi hub and 4G backup
    - Aussie broadband
    - Belong
    - Exetel

Not sure what model belong, exetel or aussie broadband provide.

What provider do you guys recommend?

    • Would definitely put Aussie broadband up the top. You get a Netgear mesh router. They’re a premium provider, and would be cheaper to switch once your voucher runs out. But they are good quality.

      • Which netgear router?

Im seeing they only offer netcomm ones

        • Yeah definitely a typo, sorry. NF20MESH. Still ~$200 worth.

          • @SirPumpkinator: Thee superloop aero (wifi 6, zigabee hub) seems a better option than the netcomm though

would be cheaper to switch once your voucher runs out

If the program is not extended, the nbn provider has to give notice and options, already asked the guys before i got the voucher. But likely to get extended though for election votes.

    • how did you get the voucher? did you contact anglicare? or the nbn? did they ask you about your financial situation income etc?

    • Someone else asked a while back, but looks like their question got overlooked, so can you please outline how you got the voucher and which agency / organisation nominated you for the scheme?

Presume you have school aged kids to qualify and some background validation check is conducted? Did you also have to disclose your financial situation to qualify?

I chatted online with the support team but didn't get to ask these questions, as they realtime checked the NBN system and said I wasn't currently eligible for the scheme, as it showed that I still had an active connection (apparently you need to disconnect for at least 14 days).

  • +1

Well i went with superloop with eero plus router.
Not really fussed about support as i am able to troubleshoot 99% of the problems.

  • +1

noice. went with Aussie Broadband, got it free till end of 2025. was a smooth plug and play

  • Weird. Service not activated on superloop superhub but got the internet working last night with a google wifi router.

  • Update on superloop.
Getting constant 50/20 full speed in my area. Seems SL is not popular where i live.

Also anyone know if the amazon eero plus from SL is locked or can be used with any provider. Decided to just use a google wifi that someone gave me for free and sell the eero.

    Cheers

    • I think SL is a good choice since they have the speed boost option. I was told you can only use the voucher once and you will need to apply again if you port out of it. Still a good choice if 50/20 is enough for you but I still prefer getting free 1000/50 by hopping around.

    • Did you manage to sell the Amazon Eero… if so, what's the current 'street value'. Assume it isn't locked to SL?

  • signed up on Monday, received modem and got connected today. happy with that.

  • Full steam ahead for me here, SL with a new Eero

    • Why’d you not pick abb(premium) or voda(4g backup)?

      • I looked at info on all six providers… interestingly, ABB's (which you flag as a 'premium service') typical evening speeds are actually lower than the competitors (49Mbps down & 16Mbps up vs 50Mbps down & 17Mbps up).

Yup realise very little difference, so whether this actually translates to any real world performance difference I'm not sure (probably not), but seems ABB certainly do a good job at marketing themselves as a perceived 'premium' Tier 1 service provider.

  • +1

The requirements have changed - you can ask for nomination:

Contact the National Referral Centre, on 1800 954 610 (Mon–Fri, 10am–6pm AEDT), www.anglicarevic.org.au/student-internet. Callback, webchat and interpreting services also available.

The National Referral Centre team will check your residential address and ask your some basic questions to determine if you qualify for the School Student Broadband Initiative.

If you qualify, you will be issued a voucher which can be redeemed at any of the participating internet providers. The National Referral Centre will also be available to assist with contacting your chosen internet provider or providing follow-up support.

  • So which NBN companies are more likely to honour the deal or give a great offer to you when the free NBN finishes at the end of 2025?

    On the website it says:
When signing up for School Student Broadband Initiative there are no lock-in or automatic rollover contracts. At the end of 2025, your School Student Broadband Initiative service will end. You will not be automatically rolled over to a paid plan. Closer to the end of 2025 your chosen internet provider will get in touch with you to provide further information.

  • +3

I got my voucher today. I called Aussie Broadband and she said that all the people already on the scheme got their free NBN extended to 30/6/2028.

    • +1

Out of interest, when did you sign up? Was the process easy or lots of hoops to jump through?

      • +1

Depends if you are trying to sign up via an agency or self-refer. Also if you are genuinely eligible, as in have school-aged kids, don't currently have NBN connection, have actual financial support need for scheme, etc.

      • +1

I self referred last year but did not qualify as my child was in preschool/ kindy. Every other state it's accepted but not in NT and ACT. I called them on the 2/1/2025. They found my referral from last year. I had done the phone questionare in July and my circumstances haven't changed.

I work but I'm low income and get the tax benefit A & B. It's not much but anything helps.

I went with Aussie. No credit check or payment details required. Got the modem & plugged it in & it worked straight away.

        • +1

I was going to go with ABB as considered a Tier 1 provider (therefore most expensive plans) but ended up going with Superloop as they offer the 5 free speed boosts per month (theoretically good for when all the kids are simultaneously gaming & media streaming on weekends).

If you successfully qualify for a voucher, always good to check out the Point of Interconnect (POI) CVC graphs (if publicly available) prior to signing up (given you can't churn to a different ISP whilst on the SSBI scheme)… just to ensure they have ample current (and hopefully future) capacity to avoid potential evening time congestion (especially given only 50Mbps plan).

Just for everyone's info that may be applying… I tried to combine the Vodafone "free speed boost to the next NBN speed tier" promo with SSBI, but got a firm NO (others may have better luck depending on who they speak to).

    • -1

Hey @koplik8 could you please cite your source for the extension of the program? Everywhere I see it says ends end of 2025. Would be nice to see something on record. Cheers.

  • +1

Thanks OP! Only 2 questions asked: 1) are you struggling financially?; 2) do you have school aged kids?

    • Don't forget "do you have a current NBN connection?". If their system shows you do, then that's a showstopper!
