Not to be confused with TLC.

Now now. Don't go chasing waterfalls. As we don't want no scrubs.

      • These phones don't holla at you.

        • They ain't no hollaback girl

  • +9

Shame there's no custom rom scenes for this, looks like a great deal hardware wise

  • low screen nits, will struggle for visibility in ozone layer free Australian sun.

    • +18

My phone is 450nits and handles the Aussie sun. I think 700nits will be fine. It's certainly no iPhone 14 bright but it's also $800 cheaper 😜

    • +4

I have one of these phones and it's fine. I've had no problems with it since i got it.

It's only a shame that it's stuck on Android 11 with no update.

      • How's the responsiveness of loading apps like the camera or spotify?

        • +1

The Camera app seems to load up within a second. The picture quality from the camera doesn't seem too bad either. I don't use Spotify so i can't comment for that.

    • Since when is 700 nits "low"? Cmon man that's plenty

  • +4

Finally a cheap Chinese Android with wireless charging and NFC? Can anyone confirm?

Also does anyone know if it comes with a case and screen protector?

    • +5

      with wireless charging and NFC

      Apparently Yes

I bought one of these a few months ago and can confirm it comes with clear silicone case but no screen protector.

      • I chucked the silicon case out.

Instead i went with this TUDIA shockproof case for it. Apparently it's military grade shockproof which that low quality silicon case just can't provide. I can confirm it fits the TCL 20 Pro 5G perfectly.

        https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B098D218W4/ref=ppx_yo_d…

Also i found that the smartphone doesn't seem to even get any scratches on the screen. The screen seems real solid.

        • That's a nice case. I got a glass screen protector thinking just maybe it might work but the case gets caught on it and screen presses fail occasionally. Wish I knew what the equivalent non-curved model is for a perfect fit, but you are correct, the screen seems pretty good and case should save most drops.

          • @dmbminaret: Yeah, i've had the phone for about 6 months and so far there has not been one single scratch on the screen. I wonder if it might already have a built in factory screen protector. I think usually a flagship model phone already does?. I'd reckon that it does so you have no need for a 3rd party screen protector.

          • @dmbminaret: Actually i can tell that the TCL 20 Pro 5G already has a built in screen protector from the factory by the glossiness of the screen and the feel of it. So there's no need to put an extra screen protector on it because i believe that it already has one on it out of the box.

    • +1

Yes it has 15W wireless charging and NFC. You can also use a 10W wireless charger with it.

Actually i use an Alogic 10W wireless charger that i got from Harvey Norman to wireless charge my TCL 20 Pro 5G. Works a charm with it.

      Actually it's this charger.

      https://www.harveynorman.com.au/alogic-alpha-10w-wireless-ch…

And i also use the INUI 15W wireless charger which i got through Amazon. It also works brilliantly with the TCL 20 Pro 5G.

bog standard feature set if it was 2017, but in 2023 this is top tier stuff, better than almost all flagships except sony/asus except the missing water resistance.

    wild.

    • Do you mean flagship specs of 2017 becomes standard features in 2023.

      • +5

no, flagships have lost a lot of features since 2017.

        • Which flagship phone from 2017 is the peak?

          • +3

@Moral hazard: it was just a ballpark year but imo the S7-S10 (and their competition) were peak.

also reminiscing about LG trying out wacky form factors, and Nord and Xiaomi were actually amazing value.

            • @xrailgun: So Xiaomi no longer good value? I thought their poco series still popular…or maybe red mi

              • @neonlight: by MSRP, they're still good value, but for ozbargainers, hard to justify vs samsung's/pixel's aggressive discounts/trade-ins.

  • There seems to be a few different opinions about whether the OS has been updated to 12 or not but the specs suggest that it has a good screen and decent hardware. Positive reviews at US$250-300, seems like a decent buy for $255

  • +1

Break screen = chuck in bin

    • +1

Yes a flip case would be a good investment.

      • Yeah been there and done that with TCL :(

        • It's not repairable compared to others?

    Absolute bloody bargain

  • How would this compare with Oppop X5 Lite?

    Security Update Until?

    • +7

Already ended - June 2023 based on TCL website

      • +3

And it's stuck with Android 11 for the operating system. I got nothing more than that on my TCL 20 Pro 5G.

        • +1

My Poco X3 Pro is stuck on Android 12 and last year's April security update. There's been an OTA update a couple of months ago but my phone doesn't wanna get it :/

          • @CVonC: Shows the security patch level of 1 July 2022 on my TCL 20 Pro 5G and it's got all the updates ever released for it. So yeah this one is last years July security update. I guess they gave up supporting this phone some time ago.

      • +5

        Already ended - June 2023

        WTF 🤷🏼‍♂️

It's bizarre that there's no regulation around this scenario - the seller doesn't even have to show a warning that this device is no longer patched and is a giant security liability !

        • +12

          Giant security liability haha

As apposed to the 100's of millions of old phones still being used?.. Security on phones starts and ends with people NOT clicking on links that take them to fake sites that they get scammed on…

NO amount of security patches or virus software will help these people. SAME goes with PC's both windows and mac's…

          education is the best protection

            Opposed to ?
Nope, these are also a giant security liability. If it's unpatched then it's unpatched !

Security on phones starts and ends with people NOT clicking on links that take them to fake sites that they get scammed on…

            education is the best protection

I agree, so what's your plan for training everyone who is going to buy one of these phones ? If you think the security issue isn't an issue with education, then let's hear the plan to educate the buyers.

            • +2

@Nom: People need to educate themselves if they want to be secure online and rely less on corporations to protect them… They can barely protect themselves from hackers just look at Sony and Optus.. ext.. Windows patches also do very little when the bios needs to be updated to fix CPU flaws.. . Better to be up to date with security fixes but they will not protect you or anyone online from being stupid

          • @vid_ghost: How many educated people do you know that are still completely clueless?

Knowing what to (not) do and THEN (NOT) DOING IT.

            • @Sinnerator: That's why Australian get scammed 100's of millions of dollars each year :)

        • +6

Wait till somebody tells you people are still running win xp boxes…

I'm running android 7 and there are no security issues, it's just marketing nonsense. What are you going to do in your bootloader locked non-root sandboxed device to (profanity) up the security? Gotta plumb the depths of the dodgiest shit to (profanity) that up.

          • @ssfps: I wish I was. I couldn't keep up with all the convoluted patches of modules ripped from eftpos terminals so was forced onto Windows 10. Windows XP was the best they ever made and it only went downhill from there. I absolutely detest Windows 10. NOTHING works the way it should or how you expect. It was more frustrating than going from PC to Apple. It doesn't even have a button to take you to your @$%^% desktop! I finally found it but it was this narrow invisible LINE that 80%+ of the time you have to click 7 times to finally hit. I had to install some third party utility to give me a wider blank button that sits down near the clock to save the hours wasted per month mis-clicking it. It's ridiculous! Just finding where files are is a nightmare too which was much simpler (and faster) in XP. Everything most people need or want is turned off by default, the most simple and common sense things like displaying file paths. You can search for a file then click it to open it, but Explorer doesn't show where the file is located unless you change those settings. It took several months to change enough settings just to get it to function half decent so I wasn't angry with it every day. Oh and who knows how I'm supposed to install a new internal SSD… because they gave a free upgrade from Win 7 I think, but now I have no install codes, and they don't provide an installation CD-ROM. You can obtain some code by installing another utility but I entered that code on the MS site and it isn't the one required to download a Windows 10 install image. One day my SSD is going to fail, I'll lose everything, and have no way to install Windows 10 on a new drive. Then the forced upgrades, which you say "no wait" to because they've been known to crash your computer, which ignore you and upgrade anyway while you're asleep because you don't get to see the popup with a countdown timer to your incoming BSOD landmine. Half the time those upgrades which 98% of people don't use what it "fixes" anyway, kill the audio drivers so I have to uninstall and reinstall. Lucky I remember the fix or I'd have no sound. Fkn fools!

            • @[Deactivated]: Ok IT boomer

            • @[Deactivated]: Stick with Win7. XP is way too old now. I agree though. Win10 is annoying to use and the updates keep failing on my PC so i just have to ignore them.

              • @Windows7forever: Oh yeah I forgot that gem… bought a new SSD just after buying my Win 7 laptop… MS updates keep nagging me to upgrade, saying I could always go back to 7 if I wanted, but time for free Win 10 upgrade was running out… So I did the update, hated 10, went to go back - and it refused saying it couldn't revert!

  • +1

Bought it for my mum thanks

  • Thanks OP .. i ordered two for work :)

  • +4

I have one of these I bought a few months ago for $313 from memory.

    Cons:
-Fingerprint scanner on screen rather than on the back or pawer button
-Curved screen which is annoying when you touch the edge holding the phone. You can change the settings but not the nest overall.
    -Still on android 11.

    Pros:
    Good camera
    Micro SD
    5g
    Good size and profile
    Good specs for price.
Although not officially water resistant it seems to be fairly resistant and has rubber gaskets so I suspect they just didn't want to pay to get it certified.

    • +1

Does this come with a rubber case?

      • Hopefully it does, it'll be needed

  • +3

If you are buying this smartphone then i recommend to get one of these military grade shockproof case for it. You'll be kicking yourself if you drop and break it without the protection. I once did that with a phone and i regretted it. It's only a $25.90 investment.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B098D218W4/ref=ppx_yo_d…

    • +1

I think it comes with a clear rubber case (Free) in the youtube reviews

      • It's only a silicon case that it comes with but it offers no drop protection at all. So the free case is useless for any thing other than scratch protection.

That's what those military grade hard cases are made for to protect from accidental drops. The material it's made of absorbs the shock.

    • +1

Curved screen is hard to protect unfortunately

      • +1

It's only the very edges of the screen which is curved down (it doesn't curve up). The rest of the screen is completely flat. So it's not a curved screen panel as such. It's classed as Curved Edge Display which is a flagship phone screen panel feature. So it's easy to protect as there's no upwards curve at all.

It's got a really nice quality AMOLED display however it's limited to 60Hz. But a higher refresh rate display only draws more power to flatten the battery faster.

        • So like a mild curve like the Galaxy S3 had?

          • +1

@Fobsessive: I think a bit more curved. The curved edges are bit more like what was found in Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was was another flagship phone. Actually it looks extremely similar. I guess all the manufacturers at the time was copying what Samsung was doing with their flagship phones.

  • +5

    Shame about that curved screen..

    • +4

I was thinking of buying a Samsung when some design nitwit thought ugly curved screens all the way to the edge might be a good idea. I looked at it in JB HiFi. It had only been on display two days. It was irritating to hold (slippery), had a weird fishbowl effect around the sides, and an amazing amount of scratches all around the screen edges! I mean, how many people can pick up a display phone (and only during business hours) and scratch the hell out of it in just two days!? My phone made in 2015 has a very slightly raised edge meaning the screen doesn't touch the surface when placed face down. I've dropped it on rough concrete and slate tile floors several times but it's screen still looks like new. Eight YEARS vs just TWO DAYS.

    • It's not a curved panel like you find in curved TV or computer monitors. In fact there's no curve in the whole display other than at the edges of it and that's curved downwards, not up. It's a Curved Edge Display. It's only the edges which curve down and that only starts at the very edges of the panel. The rest of the screen is completely flat.

In other words it's a flat panel with downward curved edges. I should know as i own one of these phones.

It's one of the smartphones which feature Curved Edge Display. Note how it says edge. Believe it or not that the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was also one of these phones which feature it. Yeah you've got that right this phone has one of the features found in one of the most popular flagship phones. Yep it's a feature only found in flagship phones.

      https://www.smartprix.com/bytes/phones-curved-display/

      • Yes. That's the problem

  • +5

I bought the 10 pro for $200 but that was 12 months after it was released .

Screen is nice but the curve sucks . Much prefer a flat screen .
    Headphone jack FTW .
Camera is crap in anything but good light and then it's still not great .
I like the very vanilla OS . Runs smooth enough .

It had 2 years of updates and that was it with no custom roms .

I'm not convinced this a bargain at $250 as it has no security updates as it was released 2 years ago . Maybe at $200?

I was tempted to get the Pixel 7 (bought my wife one ) but this damn thing is still perfectly adequate .

    • 10 pro / 20 pro …. do you feels them very premium built just by holding it on hand ?

      • +2

10 pro does have a nice solidness about it .
Much nicer than previous mid range Motorola's . It is a bit slippery and could do with some added texture .

    • +1

The only part of this screen which isn't flat is at the edges of it.

Why are some people thinking that this screen has some thing like a curved TV panel. It doesn't. It's actually a Curved Edge Display panel which is completely different to that.

  • Anyone find a solution to install APK files with this phone, been searching all over the net and can't find a solution to install APK outside of Google Play store.

    • +3

It's just like any Android phone, anything specific you are referring to?

      • Trying to install YouTube Vance or Newpipe, but the system doesn't allow me to do it.

        • +1

Did you enable "install from unknown sources"? This is the first I've heard of any phone completely blocking APK sideloading.

    • I had no problems pushing APKs via ADB

  • If there is no update meaning you can use a maximum of 2-3 years how’s that good?

    • +1

$255 every three years is better than $2500+ I guess.

  • How does this compare to Motorola g62?

    • +5

This has a larger screen with AMOLED, faster CPU/GPU, more RAM, more storage and better cameras. The Motorola G62 has the advantage of being newer with more Android updates, a 120Hz refresh rate, larger battery and stereo speakers.

    • Be sure to get the right one (read from "grey market"): https://cybershack.com.au/reviews/motorola-g62-5g-everything…

  • +1

Featuring a 6.67" AMOLED curved 1080x2400 display with 700nits brightness, Android 12, 6GB RAM, 256GB storage (expandable), Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G CPU with Adreno 619 GPU, Widevine L1 DRM, NFC, 4500mAh battery with QC3 charging & 15W Qi wireless charging, 48/16/5/2MP rear camera, 32MP front camera, 5G/4G connectivity, Dual SIM, 3.5mm jack, WiFi ac, Bluetooth 5.1 and in-display fingerprint reader.

How to get 12 on it in Australia?

    • +3

You tell me. I will change it.

    • sometimes the wait for upgrades can be a year for Australia… sometimes never. it sux.. but it happens with other brands too

    • This Australian model doesn't have Android 12 and never has been given it, it's Android 11. It's the T810H model (more specifically T810H-2BIZAU12) that we've got here in Australia. That's the model which my Australian model of this phone comes up as saying T810H. I did get this phone from Allphones but the one from Mobileciti would be exactly the same model.
