    • +13

Scandia Ash- It's for vacuuming burnt IKEA furniture

  • Still in stock here at local bunnings (north of perth). Do I need one though lol.

    • Got one. Might be good for firepit.

  • +1

I've picked up several discarded vacuums of this type from the side of the road over the years. Does anyone know why so many brands suck at… well… sucking!? I'd like to get a garage vac instead of sweeping dirt that lifts up into the air then gets into your nose and lungs. But I want to understand first why so many different brands still run but are absolutely HOPELESS at vacuuming, so I don't by a useless piece of junk. Even when you remove the round paper air filter underneath thinking it must be so blocked there's no airflow, they still struggle to pick up dirt - you can see it falling back out of the nozzle.

    • +13

Hmmm - maybe that's the reason they're at the side of the road..

      • No, don't be ridiculous. Can't be something that obvious!!!

      • +2

I've found only about 40% of the time discarded appliances are broken. I check things over, repair if necessary, then give away or resell cheap to cover parts cost. The most common reason people toss things is boredom. They get the itch for the dopamine hit of buying something new. I see someone putting something on the footpath, ask them what's wrong with it, "Aw nuthin' mate! Just got sick of the wife nagging me to buy a new one. Take it. Saves me calling council to pick it up! I'll be buying again in a couple years but this will probably still be going fine." The number of times I've had a conversation just like that amazes me.

If I take three 1980s/90s washing machines home I'll get at least one working one, if not two, because at least three brands had the same or interchangeable parts with only cosmetic changes like a different plastic face with the controls moved around.

But for some reason the same has never been true with garage type vacuums. (Mind you I bought a new Vax from Bunnings and it was a piece of rubbish from day one.)

    • +3

Probably the brushes in the motor. The motor inside most vacuums is tiny. It can fit in one hand and it runs super fast to generate the suction.
If something happens to partially short some of the windings, it will run but at reduced power. You could probably fix them by opening them up, cleaning out debris and replacing the brushes, but it's generally dirty and a lot of work.

I'd also be careful when picking up second hand vacs. Never know when the previous user has decided to remove some asbestos, use the vacuum to clean up the dust, then chuck the whole thing out.

      • Thanks. I guess I'm more concerned when buying a new one, preventing the same thing happening. I bought a new Vax house vacuum from Bunnings with hopeless suction, but didn't realise until the warranty expired because the wife was the only one using it. So yeah, I wanted to understand why they become so consistently weak to avoid the same thing happening with a new garage vac.

No cyclonic filtration. The filters will block up after a couple of uses. Faster to just use a hand shovel and a bucket.

    • It's $25

    • +1

You can buy cyclonic filtration add-ons for normal vacuum cleaners. I used to have a cheap Hoover with one and I used the same filter bag for years.

    • +1

Yup, seems much safer and easier to use a simple scoop than risk stirring up ash with a machine like this.

I use a cheapo brush and dustpan - each time the kitchen bin is emptied, fireplace is checked and maybe once a month a few scoops go in the bag before it hits the wheelie in.
      Only takes a minute.
No mess, no ash in the air or filters to manage.

  • I've been using Dyson DC19 for my home use as well as for those heavy duty tasks such as cleaning up my home renovation messes. It has been working perfect for over 10 years and the best I've ever own.

Though I do have a ryobi wet/dry vacuum only for wet tasks.

    • Likewise.. my DC19 is still going strong after well over 12 years I reckon. Never had to replace anything on it.
But for $25 I grabbed one of these to save tempting fate on the Dyson :-D

  • +2
  • Ordered and ready for collection at Castle Hill NSW. Still stock.

  • How long could the hepa filter really last when vacuuming ash. Surely it would block up after a single use. Are the re-useable? The filters I mean? Disregard. Its right there in the description. "Washable". :)

    • Washable apparently.

    • Who even keeps the filters in when using them as shop / ash vacs anyway …

      • +3

        I'd like to lock in
"A. Anyone with lungs they'd like to keep using"
        Eddie.

    • It says cloth filter which is not ideal for long life IMO

  • Any idea how well this would work for plaster dust and sawdust?

    • I think a cheapo shopvac with a meshed cover over the thing would work.

  • cool, can use this for my coffee grinder clean each morning

  • can i use this for regular around the house vacuming? my regular house vacum cleaner is about to die..

    • possibly not it has no wheel on its base. how could i move it around lol

  • +1

Thanks a lot. Do not know why I need it still bought one. Further detail from official website: https://www.scandiastoves.com.au/products/accessories/miscel…

  • website not found.

  • +2

Link has changed, product still there for the same price though: https://www.bunnings.com.au/scandia-ash-vacuum_p0248499

Edit: I don't know WTF is going on. Sometimes the link works, sometimes it doesn't so not sure if Bunnings website is playing up or what. Just use the search function on the homepage to find it though

    • Thanks, was able to find and buy a few. At this price its silly not to. The filter costs more on its own.

  • Whats the circumference of the base? I picked up a ducted vac a while ago, but it was missing the base on it. If this is the same size it could really be worth getting.

    • +2

      You mean the girth?

      • Diameter. ;-p

  • +2

None anywhere in ACT where we still use fireplaces….

  • I never thought of vacuuming my ash, figured it would stuff up my vacuum. Makes sense to have a cheapo just for that purpose, instead of getting black feet whenever I walk outside bare foot.

  • +1

Works as a blower too! Great for charcoal bbq's and firepits!

    • Airflow isn't adjustable - you'll most likely blow the fire into nearby trees with the volume of air it delivers.

      • Sounds like more fire to me then!!

  • Just got the last one at Notting Hill. Lady said 7 of them gone in the last hour.

Issue with Bunnings website is it still says 'in stock', same on the powerpass app, even though there are none left at that locale.

  • -2

only richy rich have fireplaces in their massive masions, so they can suck up the ash with their $2,000 dysons.

    • +1

I'm no rich but a poor man with a charcoal bbq. Was looking into a decent ash vac for deep cleaning and did not want to spend more than $50 for it ;)

  • +2

Damn! Tarneit Bunnings, the guy showed me to the shelf and the last of 5 units were bing carted away for on-line orders! arrived 30s too late! Ozbargained!

  • :( mine cancelled and refunded too.

  • Manly west had them for $12.50. Not sure if any left.

  • +2

To the guy outside cockburn hope my instructions help you snag one

    • +2

Was this meant to be sent on Grindr?

      • haha maybe ;)

the shelf was cleared and the extra stock was all the way ontop so if you didn't look up you'll miss it

and cockburn is a real suburb!

        • +4

Yeah, I don't normally wind down the window and call out to men I don't know but glad I spoke to you
Saw you walking out with 2 and thought you'd taken the last - wouldn't have found them without your advice
          Cheers

  • +1

I didn't know vacuuming your fireplace was even a thing. I have mine going all winter and only have to clean it once at the end of the season. I just use a shovel and scoop the ash in to a tub.

Do people just use this on open fireplaces I assume?

    • it'd be handy for my outdoor firepit. It's kind of a 1m diameter sphere with cut out shapes around the sides. On a night with friends over we can go through a lot of firewood, so the ash can be quite a lot of work to clean out by hand.

  • How ironic. I was looking at this last night to buy but wasn't aware that it was on special. Now out of stock in most places !

  • +1

    Just picked one up…damaged box $15 :)

  • Good for picking up crumbs off the dining table? :)

    • Great for the kids too… to chase the cat while mum is out shopping. Which I absolutely did not do sucking its tail into the pipe sending it screaming from room to room in a nervous mess with the plan to say I was only getting rid of its fleas when I was 9.

  • +2

Picked mine up from click and collect.
Even better , my store had these on clearance for $12 so the difference has been refunded:)

    • Which store is that . It says out of stock pretty much everywhere

      • This one is out of stock now also.
        Newcastle region

        • I ordered one for click and collect at Kotara tomorrow, will I get my 13 bucks back?

  • Hmmm don't need this at all…and I will be buying it.

  • 800w don't bother for any sort of cheap dust extraction

  • 5 at my local-ish Bunnings. Bought 1 by Click and Collect.

    What are my chances?

I can't get the link to work, even when searching for it.

    • Same

      • Looks like it's been removed now. Man that 404 hit a snag page is making me hungry!

  • +1

    Order was cancelled :(

  • All get when click is a burnt snag

  • +1

I was able to get a one finally! The lady asked me why everyone is buying these. She said there's so many orders is it on special or something? :)

  • Any feedback on these?

    • It should do the job. Very simple design which I like and has a prefilter which can be washable. Doubles as a blower too. It's noisy tho.

    • Collected mine from Bunnings today - have not actually used it for my intending purpose yet - but I did switch it to see the extent of suction it can do. It is actually quite good. I was pleasantly surprised. Not sure if this actually works for sucking up saw dusts on my mitre saw but i think it is quite positive.

  • Anyone in Brisbane wanna sell one they dont need or want?
