Personal Finance Tracker Spread Sheet $6 (Was $8) @ CompiledSanity Personal Finance

2231

Budgeting for the Commonwealth Games can be difficult – with a good spreadsheet you too can deliver a ($65b?) healthy household surplus.

This formula driven and automated net worth and savings tool has been really popular on OzBargain and reddit, and hopefully you'll enjoy it too! The sheet is made to help track monthly finances and provides a bird's eye view of your financial position each month. For me, I saw the light on how much I was spending on PWC tax advice and not enough on watertight confidentiality agreements.

Changes since the last deal – many bug fixes per community requests, improved connectivity with MorningStar and more to come!

——
FAQ #1: Why should I pay money for this?
The sheet is heavily automated, has live pricing and is a one-off payment rather than a subscription. If you're really interested, feel free to join the subreddit where I take future feature suggestions (and have for the past two years) and other users can help you debug and get set up.

FAQ #2: what permissions do I need to give and what information will you get off me?
All information is fully self-contained within and never leaves the sheet. There are 2 versions of the sheet:
- FULL: Sheet contains the full suite of automated features but requires some more expansive permissions as a result.
- SLIM: Does not support email updates, calendar reminders or the migration feature but has more self-contained permissions for those privacy conscious.

Wishing you all a happy tax refund!

  • Is this very useful if you don’t own property or have credit card?

Nice to have a figure of what your personal net worth is but I don’t quite see what this can do that is actually actionable for me. I have ETFs but idk what information would give me tangible benefits

    • +1

One of the best parts about the sheet is that it helps you see everything in one place. Then think about where you want to be in 5 years, set a target, and this sheet is built to keep you accountable to get there.

Also having numbers in front of you is great for the ‘gamification’ of your finances. It is very rewarding to see your finances grow over time and be rewarded by having everything in green when you do well. Not to mention seeing how far you’ve come as time goes on.

That is probably simplifying it, but you don’t have to have a lot of assets for this to be worthwhile. Even if you hold only cash, as long as you are looking to save it will be useful.

  • +1

I don't think I can find the answer but does the sheet link to your bank account or does it require manual inputs to update your overall savings?

    • +2

It requires manual inputs which for some is a security feature since it doesn’t integrate with your bank. I am looking at adding OpenBanking support, of which UP is already supported.

That being said entry only takes about 30 or so seconds each month and is very quick.

  • Thanks OP - just purchased!

  • Is it possible to use the sheet to track Super investments?

    • +2

Yes, it has a super section where you can track multiple accounts.

      • Do you have any way to get live super unit prices?

(Looking forward to when super joins CDR and a standardised API becomes available)

        • Not at this stage unless your super fund uses unit prices listed on MorningStar. Some Supers do this but it depends on who you are with.

          • @CSPersonalFinance: I see, is there a list from MorningStar anywhere I had a quick google and couldn't see anything. Wondering about QSuper

            • @User2049: Not as such, it would rely upon your super fund telling you the underlying funds. Unfortunately most don’t, so we’re waiting for CDR until then.

  • Been using this for a few months its great and is a bargain at full price even if you only use 20% of the features.

Takes a while to set up initially then its a couple of minutes to update each month.

If you are interested in monitoring/growing personal wealth you will get value out of this.

  • Great sheet, I definitely recommend it and it is well worth the miniscule cost

  • Downloaded! Thanks for the generous offer. I am a Ynab user and kinda was working on my own excel sheet to do the same functions instead of paying them $100 every month. However my spouse is now used to the app, it took me 3 years to convince her to use it.

Hi, I continously use credit card interest free offer as finance to allow me to offset my mortage further. Is there any kind of tool that allows me to keep track of this or even show me how much I might be saving, always a difficult discussion with the wife trying to explain my madness.

    • +1

Assuming you are cycling across interest free periods on cards.

But how do you extract the $ from the card onto the mortgage initially? Wouldn't that be a cash advance?

      • I have a large monthly spend so can easily max a interest free on balance transfers and use personal funds as offset

  • Any idea how many property it can track?

    • +1

The sheet can track up to 8 properties

      • Can you track expences for each property?

  • OP - thanks for the great work. Are we able to track investments through trust/company accounts? Which has a different tax rate?

    • Most definitely. The sheet is mostly pre-tax, so how you hold the investments shouldn’t matter.

  • The property tracker screenshot shows up to 4 properties, is that the limit or can it be more?

    • It supports up to 8, they are simply hidden by default to reduce visual clutter.

      • Do you plan on adding more to the limit? Might consider this spreadsheet if so as I'm already close to your limit and planning on getting more IPs lol

        • +1

          Definitely can! Would 12 suffice?

  • +6

This better make me richer as in the short term it appears to have decreased my net wealth by $6.

  • I'm currently using YNAB online. How easy would it be for me to move across to this sheet or is it sort of impossible?

  • +1

I would only feel secure asking this on OzB… can I tax deduct this $6?

    • I would say yes

      • I wouldn’t say yes.

    • +1

If you use it to assist you in paying your tax I don't see why not, how is it any different from buying MYOB or paying an accountant?

  • You got me. Looks like a bit of fun. I am a good saver but never bothered tracking things besides watching a number increase. Looks like I can many numbers increase now.

    • +2

Only an ozbargainer could describe a financial spreadsheet as 'a bit of fun'!

      • Hah. Gotta have a spreadsheet for everything. :D

  • Another YNAB user here. I’m after simple, envelope-style budgeting. Can this spreadsheet do that?

  • -2

There were comments in the page that data between April to July were wiped out overnight. I encountered the same issue. This has not been fixed yet. As data was lost I am reconsidering whether keep using this or not.

    • +1

Could you please explain what you are seeing? It shouldn’t be possible for the script to record to multiple months at one time.

Did you press the record button for each of those months? Please feel free to open a thread on my subreddit and I can look into this for you more personally.

  • Does this support multiple currencies? I spend and invest in multiple countries and need a tracker to monitor both.

Is this a perosnal net wealth tracker, or can inuse it to track spending trends over time (assign expenses to categories and report on this).

    Cheers

    • Yes it does support multiple currencies and live conversion on all assets.

This is much more high level than individual items and categories to allow for ease of entry each month. So it is more holistically looking at your wealth and assets.

  • Last time you posted you spoke of doing an update to automate the pulling of transactions from different banks. Any update on that?

  • bought this last deal, still haven't used it (oops)…but have now resent invite and upgraded to 2.13 :)

    • I did not use it and cant find the emails

  • +1

If we sell shares how do we enter the data to update stock held and calculate capital gain?

  • Just bought. Thanks for sharing!

  • Thanks, will give it a try.

  • Assuming some questions might come up as I start using it, how do i get support if I have a question that’s not covered in FAQ?
Keen to give it a try

    • Best way would be the active subreddit which has myself and a large number of users who can help with any questions you have.

      • Thanks. Purchased and started to populate information already! Finding it really interesting but do have some questions/ confusion that I’ll try to sort out from guide/FAQ. Or will get in contact.

      • Hi
I’ve made a post in reddit 3 days ago, seeking some help. Would you be able to look into it please?

  • Just bought. Looking forward to checking it out! Sounds like a great product!

  • bought. will think about it later how to use it

  • I have paid for the spreadsheet. My paypal account has been charged. When do I receive it?

    • I got the email in my gmail about 2 mins after paypal was processed.

    • You should have received it within a couple of minutes. If you haven’t feel free to send me a PM and I’ll manually send it out to you.

Excellent spreadsheet, I've been using the free version for 3 months, I'd butchered it heavily to do what I wanted it to achieve, however I've bought your paid version out of gratitude.

I do have some minor comments:
    * Under asset allocation, is it possible in the future to include investment properties - or even better, the equity component of these?
    * Maybe credit cards could be further expanded out from a loan type setup.
    * Under cash could there be an option next to the account for it to designated as an offset, and then select a property? Would need to accommodate multiple offsets against a property, this could then flow into the mortgage calculation section.
    * In true ozbargain fashion - this is a dreaming request - tracking loyalty points, perhaps there could be a table with a value per point, with a drop down to select the loyalty program or an option to allocated a value per point, and note an expiry.

    • Haha that last one is truly in ozbargain fashion.

  • Hello OP
How do I track my last order and updates?

    • Do you mean your sheet purchase or something else?

  • Does anyone know if there are similar spreadsheets available for tax preparation, taxable experience tracking etc?

  • Is there any way i can transfer ownership to another email?

i signed up with my main gmail account but due to the permissions it ask for, id rather use my burner account for peace of mind

    Is this possible at all?

  • Hi OP - for some reason I've been charged 4 times for my purchase this morning via paypal and was wondering if I could be refunded the extra 3? Is there somewhere I can contact you for more info? Thanks

  • As a few others have said, this is a true bargain even at full price. Great product. Buy it and support the dev. He's put a lot of effort in to it, and deserves the kudos l.

  • Thanks OP. I just reduced my net worth by $6.

  • Not an expert at this, but hey for 6 bucks I will give it a try, and see if I can work it out..

Thanks for all the effort you have put into this…

Looks confusing when full version first opened…..LOLZ

  • Hi, thanks for this, I've paid for this and looks good.
Question, I use Colonial First State and can't seem to add these managed funds. The AIPR code doesn't seem to be recognised in the sheet. Is there a way to get the pricing synced without manual entry? Thanks!

    https://www.colonialfirststate.com.au/Price_performance/perf…

  • This is so good and useful! Thanks OP! Have you thought of turning it into a website?

  • Might have been answered before, but what level of confidentiality or security does the spreadsheet offer?
Since it does live tracking etc., what is the risk of leaking confidential data?

  • Am I missing something, or is the Budget Sheet the same as Daily Expenses? I know it can't be linked to your Credit Card/Debit Card/Bank account, but in a way, if you have cash in the bank and use it for daily expenses, a manual entry can update all linked cells.

  • I choose Beancount !

  • @CSPersonalFinance

How do you add more row/cells on the spreadsheet?

Example under Cash Tab -> Bank [it only have 10 rows]
    - i need more than rows 10 if i include for wife / kids brokers accont

For stocks, there is an instruction to add moe rows but in other fields, can we also do copy and paste rows?

Same with "Budget" sheet, I need to dd more rows to specify more items

  • For anyone looking for good personal finance software check out Buxfer. I tried everything and this is the only one that got it right.

  • By mistake, I bought twice and sent you a DM. would you be able to refund one of them? I didnt realise I bought one in 2021 using the same email id.

  • Hi @CSPersonalFinance,
    A few quick questions:
    1. Would I need a new copy of this sheet for each month or each year or is it simply forever rolling?
    2. Who / where do I reach out for assistance if required?
    3. Can I track deductions e.g. Kilometres traveled or depreciable assets?
Hoping to hear from you soon,
    Thanks

  • Has anyone bought this ran the netwealth sheet for the month of August and encountered errors?

  • @CSPersonalFinance - I just missed this deal, possible to extend this deal? TIA.

  • Went up to $8
