  • does anyone who own one know if it has the auto pan feature
i.e. sweep a room side to side like you see in movies

    • I do that with my outdoor Dahua cameras. I don't think this will do it.

    • +1

TP-Link Tapo C210 can do it. It's called Horizontal Patrol / Vertical Patrol inside the Pan & Tilt settings.

      • ah what the heck i got rid of mine cause i couldnt find that setting damnit

        • C210 also has motion tracking so it can actually follow the subject in its field of view. I noticed when connected to an NVR that when I activate motion tracking, the AI based app notifications for Human detection etc stop working. I tried to work with the TP-Link support but they couldn't replicate the issue due to now having an NVR. Lolz.

      • The c10 doesn’t support microSD.

        • C210 support a 8GB to 256GB Micro SD. You have to push the lens upwards to access the SD card slot. You will have to initialise the SD Card inside the camera itself.

    • +1

I got this camera, it only Pans if it detects movement. When someone walks into frame it will continue following the person until out of frame. But it doesnt constantly sweeps left to right.

      • thanks for that info

sounds like ill have to keep looking

strange cause the Dafang camera had a lab setting for the pan and scan which was great for a wide room

  • +4

Serious question… does anyone have concerns about the potential for spying by third parties with the use of these cameras?

    • +1

Yes. You have to harden your security, have separate networks for IoT, etc etc.

      • Sorry to ask but is there a definitive guide on how to do that?

        • +2

Managed router or switches with VLANs

Best to watch a few videos on YouTube

        • +1

There is unfortunately no definitive guide. It's a whole field of study imho.

        • +2

Have a separate router with its own WiFi but not connected to internet

      • +1

Ubiquiti router with seperate guest network, vlanned and firewall rules to only allow routes to my main server (injests footage like an nvr). Does not have any routes to the internet. All other iot devices are zigbee.

      • +2

And at the very least, change the goddamn default passwords. 99% of these camera hacks would likely be stopped by just doing that.

      • This is not useful advice for these cloud based cameras.
The feed goes via proxies which are operated by xiaomi, there is plenty of space outside your control for nefarious stuff to happen.
If security is a concern, the above advice works if you use LOCAL cameras with no cloud connectivity

    • +1

I sinkhole any outbound traffic on a different model. Any dns requests just don’t resolve, and I have it on a dedicated IoT network with guest isolation.

  • +7

Why not Tapo C210 for similar price, the app is fast and responsive.

Works well with homeassistant too or any other RTSP capable software

Can get from amazon or JB with perks

    • +1

Yep. Tapo C210 is better functionality wise in my opinion.

    • Was unable to connect my Tapo to my Google Nest WIFI due to Tapo only working with 2.4gHz - was very frustrating!

      • it's annoying, but the workaround is to use your phone to set up a hotspot with the same name as your home network, turn off your router and connect using hotspot.

        • Tried everything, including this, bit couldn't get it to actually work

  • Anything similar for outdoor

    • +1

      Reolink maybe

  • +2

Had both this, Tapo c200, currently using eufy 2K.
This c300 had a crucial feature missing for me, you cant set detection zones for motion sense, it takes into full acount of the frame, it spammed notifications to my phone because i have trees/shrubs around the edges. Ended up returning it.
Tapo c200 had stuttering issues both when viewing the live stream, and viewing the recorded clip to the SD card.
Pretty happy with the Eufy so far, the live stream and the recording is so much crispier than the xiaomi even though they both listed as 2K. The app is also alot better and intuitive. But also more expensive than the other 2 options

    • +1

Haven't had any issues viewing tapo stream, is that on wifi or mobile?

      • both. Pulling out the SD card and playing back footage on my pc has the exact stuttering as viewing it live.

  • +2

Xiaomi has a bad habit of bricking cameras outside of mainland China. Buyer beware

    • +2

FWIW the XiaoFang cameras weren't manufactured by Xiaomi, however the various Github projects that revive them with extra functionality is recommended.

Other cameras like the C300 intended for the international market and sold by Xiaomi's AU distributor won't have that problem.

      • +1

        Once burnt, always shy…

        • +2

Blaming Xiaomi for something a different brand did makes no sense to me. Many brands operate under the "Mijia" banner but aren't Xiaomi products as such.

    • Yeah I saw in another thread that once working features were disabled and put behind a subscription. Hard pass for me

  • xiaomi is going downhill with useless geo locking of cameras (it's a camera ffs) .. Lookup Tapo, much better value for money

    • +1

This one is geolocked? Please elaborate.

      • Not sure about this one specifically but i've got 3 seperate models collecting xiaomi dust as they get blocked after connecting to hub. I'm no expert here, hence didn't vote, just a rant

    • I think it is locked to Singapore. I bought two from them and returned. Can't connect to the app.

  • Isn't the 7-day cloud footage a paid subscription?

    • The full continuous cloud recording is a paid subscription. But the free service includes 9 sec recording if a motion is detected for rolling 7 days. The free subscription is enough for most people.

      • Thx, http://mi0.cc/w7VTt1rF says the free service terminates on 30 Apr

        • Oh i didnt realised it was shut off. I just had a look at my cloud storage, you are right it is subscription now.

          • @KaTst3R: Np I didn't even know the free feature exist lol

            • @Meovel: That is one of the main reason why I chose Xiaomi over a TP Link. But now that proposition has gone down significantly.

My biggest concern is during a break in, if the bad guy is smart, they will remove the camera first as it has SD Card storage. Perhaps now i have to explore the network function to store on a SSD attached to the router.

              • @KaTst3R: Wouldn't they remove a camera anyway?..
I did store mi cams to an old HDD attached to router work just fine. Being said that I haven't tried any other cams recommended here, picked mi because having their robot cleaner, easier to manage in one app.

                • @Meovel: same, i got the xiaomi robovac so it is the same ecosystem.

  • -1

Very little doubt that Chinese data dredging doesn't have a backdoor to these models.

    • If your cameras are able to get to the internet, you're doing it wrong imo.

      • How many people know how to isolate them properly? .000001% of consumers?

  • +2
    • Can these detect motion outside through the window?

      • +2

I have my Tapo C210 pointing outside through a window. Motion detection works well during the day but I do get some glass reflection depending on the position of the sun. But I've had to turn off the night vision as the IR LED reflects off the glass. This means at night the motion detection picks up car headlights that flick into the detection zones. I don't use the motion notifications so it still works OK for my use of just marking events in the video timeline.

    • In the video on Amazon it shows them mounting it under an eave outside. Is it weatherproof? And how is it powered? Could I run one of the generic usb small solar panels to it to keep the battery topped up?

Edit: the video was a damn video ad for some other camera, so that's my bad. I'm just looking for a decent outdoor wifi camera that works with Amazon echo Shows. (And aren't Arlo - not happy with our existing setup with that).

      • I have been using a Xiaomi indoor camera outside mounted under eave for the past two years without any issue. Cant remember the model no, but it is definitely an older model. I should think this C300 can be used outside. Anyone has any experience using it outside?

  • How does it difference to TP link c210 l, which is $49 on Amazon.

  • Which camera is better if we compare this with Kogan SmartHome 3MP Pan and Tilt motion tracking camera as that one is for 59.99?

    • You can find the Kogan one on AliExpress under many different names like this where the 3MP is roughly $37. Tuya based and definitely on the cheaper side when it comes to picture quality and app support. Still would do a good job I think.

  • does anyone know why this deal was removed from the front page of the deals? I found this happen on the other deals as well.

    • +1

OzBargain has algorithms in place around votes, clicks, popularity etc and deals will only spend a certain amount of time on the front page.

    • use ozbargain.com.au/deals as your go to link so you see all deals chronologically

  • Dont by xiaomi products, they dont work, they have all sorts of issues. These cameras connect to server in china, extremely slow, and cam stuck at loading at 91%, not wroking, very slow like dial-up. And your privacy will be exposed.

  • I cant find anywhere a spec for how much optical zoom this has. My default is to assume PTZ is used loosely a bit little battery capacity ratings.
Also, does this work with RTSP ? I refuse to install the Mi Home app, waaay too many permissions required.

    • The app permissions make complete sense for the type of devices that use the app. Nothing extreme there. Regardless this isn't going to be the camera for you.
