I have this. Such a powerful little speaker. Can airplay from any music app if you don’t have Apple Music subscription.

I disagree. I bought one of these for my mum recently. Sound quality was very disappointing to my ears. Perhaps because I'm used to better speakers. I guess you can't get around physics. But it did come with a free 6-month apple music subscription, which was nice.

I was using google mini 1st gen before that. So I guess my ears would be use to that.

        • -5

Can confirm the $20 google mini 1st gen sounds 10 times better than this. Absolute pile of garbage this is.

      • For the size and price you are disappointed with it? Besides this has the usual apple tax on it, nothing really around for the size and price that supports airplay never mind the decent sound that comes out of it… again remember it’s size and price.

I mean if what hifi can give it 5* then I mean hey it can’t be too bad

I just would not want to listen to music out of this given the option. It sounded like something was missing. For comparison, I have Amazon Echo Plus, Google Nest Audio, Google Home Max, Megaboom 3. All sound way better. I guess my hopes were too high given comments that it has good sound for the size.

For reference, I can connect my iPhone/iPad via wifi to Google Nest or Google Home Maxes paired in stereo mode, sound is phenomenal. Full access to Apple Music (if I had a subscription).

@ForkSnorter: Comparing the HomePod mini to larger speakers like the Amazon Echo Plus or Google Home Max is like comparing apples to oranges. The HomePod mini is designed for portability and integration with the Apple ecosystem, not to compete with larger, more powerful speakers. Its compact size and lower price point cater to a different market segment. If sound quality is your primary concern and you’re comparing it to larger speakers, you might be missing the point of what the HomePod mini offers. It’s best to evaluate it within its category rather than against devices that serve a different purpose.

            • @mirridon: I’d argue with “portability”, as it needs to be plugged in like all smart speakers, and wherever you can place a homepod Mini you could also place a Google nest audio or Amazon echo. But you’re right about ecosystem integration, as long as that is more important to you than sound quality, that’s a good reason to buy.

              • @ForkSnorter: You make a valid point about the need for all smart speakers, including the HomePod mini, to be plugged in, limiting their portability in a traditional sense. What I meant by “portability” was more in terms of its compact size and ease of placement within different spaces in the home.

As for the comparison with Google Nest Audio or Amazon Echo, the differentiation may lie not only in ecosystem integration but also in individual preferences, design aesthetics, and specific use cases. While the HomePod mini might not be the top choice for an audiophile, it may suit someone looking for a seamless experience with other Apple products, a particular design appeal, or a smaller footprint.

I own a homepod original, and two minis. With the homepod original, I have never heard a better speaker , I use it for my surround sound system linked with my Apple TV.

      • Perhaps because I'm used to better speakers

        Like what?

        • +2

Larger and more expensive Smart Speakers, so "better".

          • @onlinepred: Google nest audio and Amazon echo are similarly priced, and take up about as much space on a desk or shelf.

            • @ForkSnorter: But they operate through different Assistants, offer different features etc. A pair of minis actually do well with a TV with apple tv, while stereo on my two nest audio's is average at best.

            • @ForkSnorter: I think you unintentionally argued my point for me. Silly comparisons with not much logic to justify, I own a megaboom3 also and I prefer the HomePod mini over it. I’m not saying it is better than my kef lsx or my monitor audio silver surround sound setup but for its size and feature set I love it

  • Been after a good deal on one of these for a little while, got with 30 day free trial. Thx OP.

Use one of these as my home hub so I can control my HA setup remotely, can recommend!
Initially I thought the sound quality was a bit average but for the convenience of AirPlay and having a speaker ready to go whenever it's pretty great for the price.

  • Great price and nice little device if you're in the Apple ecosystem. I have 2 of these around the house and a pair of HomePods as well. No where to put this one otherwise I'd pick one up! The hardware hasn't been updated (except for additional colours) in nearly 3 years, but there are only vague rumours of a new one coming.

Thanks, grabbed 3. Just sold all my Google hubs so perfect timing Just sign up to the Onepass 30 day trial to get the discount

    • Good tip, did the same with trial, thanks!

Great job. You just bought 3, 6 year old speakers after selling 4 year old google speaker hubs.
Great way to update your sound setup.

      • Google hubs came out in 2018, HomePod mini in 2020 so not sure what you mean. 2023 sure does make people think the thoughts they have should be shared, you seem confused someone else’s choices somehow affect you and I needed your opinion, enjoy the -v
