Not quite there yet….$800 for 256gb and I'll bite ;)

    • I'm not sure how people can live with 128gb and not expandable storage.

      • +11

People who don't store lots of stuff on their phone? I have 128gb storage and it's only half full

      • +3

Yep, it's like 2 videos in 4k of your kid.

      • +16

        Ummm…probably cloud storage

Storing everything on your device is pretty old school and pretty silly based on the risk. Lose your device, lose everything. Cloud is better for SO many reasons

      • Those don't take photos/videos

      • +4

Porns now all online so I don't have to download much

      • +1

It's easy enough when you have all your photos/videos uploaded to Google Photos.

Even better since I get unlimited storage for a low price of one $100 payment*

*OG Pixel required, price may vary

        • Do you transfer files to the pixel then they go to the cloud?

I don't like the idea of paying subscriptions. It only costs the company like $10-20 for that extra storage.

          • +1

@Caped Baldy: Yep it syncs to my Pixel 1 first then it uploads it to Google Photos.

Only manual task I really have to worry about is clearing out space on the Pixel 1 periodically

            • @Bottom G: Thanks for confirming.

I had thought of this at the time but procrastinated.

      • I've been using the same phone since 2019 with 64gb of storage. Just checked and have 10gb free. I think everybody has different needs.

    • If this was an apple then I could understand you wanting a bite….

    • hell yea!

Officeworks have dropped already … $987

  • +8

Would probably suggest waiting until P8 Pro is out likely in the next month or two. The preorder offers are usually pretty good too

    • +1

Typically $300 voucher, so same price at best, but you get the new hotness.

      • Yep. Same deal price and better everything quite likely. Plus, the P7 Pro has been lower than this before so once the 8 is out, you could probably score one below $999 anyway.

In short, probably worth the wait to see what the P8/8 Pro deals look like and I'm not usually someone who says 'wait for X' because you can play that game forever

      • Depends how crafty you are. I plan on selling the new Pixel 7 Pro I'll be getting in the mail, keeping it in perfect nick, selling it for a grand and using the $300 credit I got on the P7P for the new Pixel 8/Pro.

Whether or not I get the Pro depends almost entirely on if the regular 8 has 120Hz or not. It had better. Also if the Pro has flat sides I'm out. That shit feels bad.

    • +2

Absolutely! And based on the "leaks" so far, 8 Pro will be an upgrade over 6/7 Pro, not just an update.

    • Agree. Likely 2 months to wait still though

  • HODL till <$900 since Pixel 8 is about to be released

    • Pixel Pro 6 seems to be <$675 on Mobileciti eBay, so I guess the Pro 7 will get there over the next 12 months or so

  • +1

128 is not enough these days. So hold

    • 128Gb phones have been on the market for almost 10 years now!

      • +5

Minimum 256, we are in 2023

        • +2

Minimum 256GB doesn't mean that you will be paying the same minimum price. The starting price will increase too.
Leave the option open for people who don't keep their entire audio video collection on their mobile phones in this day and age of streaming. We are in 2023.

          • +2

@Secret ID: I don't think people are filling their phones with dodgy downloaded torrents these days.

Personally, I have a Samsung S10 with 512Gb. Yes, I love the fact that I never have to think about it running out of space. Maybe it's because I got sick of it happening on all my previous phones I've ever owned. Sure, I use the cloud for photo backups, but I also love the fact that I can do full res photos and videos and never have to worry about it filling up. I can also have a decent music collection in my phone for when I'm on a plane (with no wifi)

            • +3

@PhilToinby: All valid reasons for your choice of storage. I've been using 6 Pro 128GB since launch and still 50%+ storage available. I move all my photos and videos to NAS.
Everyone has their use cases and choices of what storage they buy. Forcing 256GB to be minimum with jacked up starting price, no one gets a better deal.

            • @PhilToinby:

I can do full res photos and videos and never have to worry about it filling up. I can also have a decent music collection in my phone for when I'm on a plane (with no wifi)

This exactly. Got the 512GB version of the P7 Pro and after so many videos and photos taken at full res, plus so many media files, documents etc I'm still at 64% (yes I also have 2TB Google One). The extra space was great when I travelled overseas, especially when I downloaded a bunch of videos from YouTube Premium to watch on the plane.

          • @Secret ID: Really agree with this, but at the same time, storage is cheap these days, and the premium shouldn't be as high as Google is passing on.

            • @onlinepred: Pixel 7 Pro costs additional $150 for storage upgrade to the next higher capacity (128-256-512).

              S23 Ultra costs additional $300 for 256 to 512.

iPhone 14 Pro Max costs additional $200 for 128 to 256 and an additional $320 for 256 to 512 upgrade.

Don't forget, starting prices of the Samsung and Apple phones mentioned above are already 50% higher than Pixel 7 Pro's starting price.

I'm not sure why you think specifically Google is passing on higher storage premium.

              • @Secret ID: Because this is a deal for a google phone. Never said others are not. Is google passing on unrealistic prices for small increases in storage? Yep.

                • -3

@onlinepred: In that case I fixed your original comment :)

"Storage is cheap these days, and the premium Google is passing on is cheaper by at least 50% than others."

                  • @Secret ID: No, my point still stands, Google shouldn't be charging the huge premium for storage that it is.

              • @Secret ID: They're charging too much across the board. Should just scrap 128GB so they're forced to appeal to buyers with 256GB at a reasonable starting price

                • @SpainKing: 256GB for the same price of 128GB? I'm in!
But unfortunately that's not how these companies work.
Reasonable is subjective and mostly it's, Competition + Whatever Sells = Reasonable. When there's no lower benchmark, comparable in the market is considered reasonable.

                  • @Secret ID: Not what I was implying but that is how it works to a certain extent, otherwise we'd still be seeing 32GB phones on the market

The lowest storage variety is where people are going to anchor their mental prices because it's the first they'll see and there's normally a nice $…99 or $…00 that catches the eye. Eliminating the lower storage option forces them to appeal to people at the next available option (256GB).

It's my newfound opinion that companies should only make one model of each generation of phone, with a reasonable amount of storage that isn't charged at a premium 5x what consumers can get them for. It's obvious at this point that different storage sizes are a ploy to gouge customers and inflate their profits by making them pay as much as they possibly can for a modicum of extra storage, otherwise they'd still include some form of SD card reader

                    • @SpainKing: I know 32GB model is exaggeration but 128GB isn't bad as long as photos and videos are offloaded regularly.

I agree with you except the part where relying on the companies to make prices attractive. As I said, if the price is comparable in the market, it's already attractive and we can't expect the companies to lower it even further out of their goodwill.

If 32GB phones were on the market these would be $800.
                      64GB - $950
128GB - $1,100 that's where we're now and it kinda validates my point. The person who wants 256GB storage is still paying the same higher price. Someone who needs only 128GB shouldn't have to fork out another $150 to get the 256GB base model.

One company stopped putting chargers in the box and increased the prices. Now it's normal across the board because we're still buying their phones. These companies are no one's friends. Having a lower pricing benchmark will keep the competition from going up and above year over year.

I think SD card reader may have a speed issues with today's demanding video recording. The cards that support H.265 are expensive. It might not work for majority of the consumer base as majority of people aren't tech savvy having to match the phone's recording rate with the memory card to buy. Companies don't want bad reviews about their phones based on a third party product/limitation. They rather provide "plug and play" devices. As the iPhone users say a lot, 'It just works'. :)

                      • @Secret ID: 128GB would be fine with External SD card and they do not provide one as their Google Cloud service is that SD card they want you to subscribe. its the same business model as Apple.

Not everyone likes to offload photos that often. Partner has 90GBs worth of photos and videos and its taking more than a week to get to NAS storage via Wifi with third party synology app

                        • -1

@neonlight: If it's taking more than a week to upload 90GB over WiFi then you should look into your network setup.
You and your partner can have 1TB phones and not offload at all, doesn't bother me. But as per your logic, take away the 128GB option because your partner has 90GB worth of photos and videos.

In case you didn't get my point which is, I don't want to pay $1450 (256GB) for a phone when I can have the same phone for $1300 but with 128GB.

                          • -1

@Secret ID: lol its not the wifi that's causing the transfer. the app needs to analyse every single video photo timestamp and meta data and categories them

Bottleneck is not wifi its the app and NAS.

I don't need people to tell me my network setup. I'm not here to get lectured. We are here to discuss GB storage on phones. Just cause i tell you some minor issue and you think i want big storage. Gosh Ozbargain makes me laugh!

What's next? A lesson on NAS? How about buying a subscription on iCloud then follow by a tutorial? Then no need for any discussion!?

Better yet manually solder on a sdcard external slot on motherboard using ifixit kit to expand storage rofl
You know how to use a soldering iron yes?

Oh yeah let's talk about modding phones and custom roms what else to trim down your Google OS. Yeah google photos cloud app let's pay that instead no worries

                            • +1

@neonlight: Getting rid of 128GB models will solve all your problems lol.

                • @SpainKing: They essentially copied Apple's pricing model giving the absolute minimum on base model and then rike in higher prices for more storage, forcing people to use their cloud servoice

        • +1

Minimum 128 plus micro SD support

      • +2

I guess computers used to have less than 30Mb disks in the late 80's, so around 40Mb should be fine today.

    • I can't wait for 128MB, still running 32GB on my Samsung :-)

      • Lol. Good old days when flagship used to cost $700 with the charger and handsfree included.

  • I haven't really kept up to date with Android news recently but what makes this phone worth $300 more than my s23?

    • +7

Show me where you can get an S23 for $700, without a bull$it trade-in or a 12 month phone contract

      • +10

His opening statement is he hasn't kept up to date…, In his defence he doesn't know what he's talking about lol

      • -3

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/772202 back in May, about $700 for the 256gb version.

Why disqualify it for being a trade in? I just never sent the phone in. It's still a bargain like this one right?

So again I ask, is this phone better than s23? And if so, how much better is it that can justify a difference of $300 in price?

        • +1

Trade-ins are actually worth something. I don't sell my car for $20k and then brag that I paid $50k for a $70k Tesla

          • -2

@PhilToinby: I said I never sent the phone in?

            • +1

@bumluffa: Might as well start stealing and then ask for comparison saying my s23 was free lol. You're hilarious!

              • -2

@Secret ID: Imagine trying to gatekeep deals on ozbargain and thinking it's a valid argument… crazy. People will do anything not to admit they're wrong on the internet. Even if it makes them a complete hypocrite

                • +1

@bumluffa: You got the phone at that price by scamming Samsung and violating the terms of the deal.Just because they didn't come after you for an odd case doesn't mean that was the deal. That is not the deal or the price of the phone.

It is not the people on the internet that is wrong and don't want to admit, it is what you did is wrong.

                  • -1

@tjoy: You guys must be new to the site and not sure how it works

That deal has over 6000 clicks and filled with comments about people not sending in their phone.

Also the deal itself specifically states it's more worth it and more of a bargain to not send in your phone and instead just re-sell it on ebay or something.

No reports on that deal and it's still up/not taken down.

You're either new to Ozbargain or simply have cognitive dissonance trying to prove an invalid point. Hence the tone of my previous comment.

Scam on Samsung or not, nobody here cares. The bargain was for a $700 s23 without needing to actually send in your phone. This deal is a bargain, yes, but using the benchmark of this previous s23 deal, my question is how is a the Pixel worth $300 more than the s23?

If you still don't get it, I'm going to assume you're just salty you missed out on the deal. Extremely poor form.

    • -5

The bigger question is why would you buy an Android phone at all at this price?

You know Google is going to drop you like a hot potato a couple of years out. You know the ongoing hardware support sucks. You know the resale value two years out is rubbish.

Yes I have owned a Google phone once, not impressed all round.

      • +3

You can buy the iPhone at $2k+ and enjoy the higher resale value of less than $1k after two years.
Let me have fun with my Pixel Pro at $1k and I'll be happy with rubbish resale value of less than $500 after two years.

        • -2

Nah, I can’t support a company that doesn’t support its products after a couple of years …… at best.

They don’t want to know you after that, no OS or hardware support. It’s ridiculous for a company to do this for supposedly a premium product.

          • +8

            @Grok: pixel security updates for 5 years . ……

            • +1

@Drpepper666: Lol I know but I didn't bother with the details. Musky seems like go with the flow kinda person. No research or logic.

          • +5

@Grok: Nah, I can't support a company that charges $1000+ for a set of desktop wheels. Enjoy the OS upgrades and hardware support for these.

      • as said before, Pixel has 5 years of support.

I assume you are comparing with iPhones, they do have better resale value but are also more expensive.

I switched from a Pixel 3a to an iPhone 13 Pro, and in all honesty: I preferred photos taken with the Pixel! (Video is a clear win for the iPhone though).

One nice thing to know with the iPhone: the resell value seems to track well with a 3-year contract. For example, if I am to sell my iPhone at any time during my contract, I earn enough to pay off the device fee. In other words, with an iPhone you can upgrade at any time you want!

      • Mostly because iOS is horrible to some people.

  • +1

Any Australian pixel owners here got any comments about them?

I see a LOT of bad warranty and support posts on Reddit about them (IF you need hardware support of course)

I'm thinking of moving over to the pixel 8 Pro.

I know Apple support is ridiculously good and I hear Samsung can be fairly ok nowadays for phones (not home appliances, AT ALL)

I also dealt with Huawei support and was frankly blown away how good it was.

    How's Google especially here?

    • I had my pixel 5 returned and got refurbished but then I got it from Google store. How does one deal with JB after first year without paying extended warranty? Mine was 1.5 years when it went bootloop

      • Unfortunately I have a heap of JB cards to offload, reducing the cost at least ten percent for me.

You raise a good point though, sometimes support is better direct. (Though I hear Sony direct is terrible for PlayStation support vs retail)

      • +1

Is a bootloop the best invention for Google's Pixels?

    • +1

I've had 5 Pixels over the last 8 years, Google support is generally pretty good, but you have to wait for product mailed to you, and then send your old one back. I did this MANY MANY times. It got very annoying. Samsung have dedicated stores, but I have found them to have very slow turn around, but at least they have dedicated stores. Apple on the other hand has been nothing but a pleasure to deal with over the last few years, I honestly wish I switched earlier. My partner can book in for phone repairs themselves, and Apple makes it very easy to do, and generally will fix the phone on the spot when possible, or give you a lender phone while your phone is being fixed. Prices are reasonable/high, but the work is guaranteed and will ensure water testing etc.
The main thing is up front cost, given you can get a pixel for less than half that of an iPhone you have to deem where the value lies in each. If you upgrade a lot, stick with the Pixels. If you don't have any Samsung/Apple stores near you, then Google method of posting your phone away would work

    • My Pixel 4's speaker shit itself after I used hand sanitizer rather excessively Got replacement in mail and had to send the broken one to Hongkong, postage paid. Smooth and easy.

Pixel 7 Pro is absolutely the best phone I have used yet. The only issue I'm having is a smudge on the front glass that appeared after I had some spicy food for dinner. But I don't know would have it happened to any other brands oleophotic coating?

      • +1

Sounds like a case and a glass screen protector would serve you well :).

        • +1

Yes definitely, but I normally don't put a protector on any phones that have a curving screen.

I cannot live without a case though, theres no grip to any phone without a you case :D

    • +1

Bought Pixel 7 Pro for the camera. Photos are dull and it struggles to focus. The zoom is very disappointing. Maybe mine is a just a dud. My old Pixel 3 was much better.

      • +1

I have heard many camera complaints about Pixel 7, especially the front camera, my primary reason for upgrade is to get a better one than my 2018 phone.

Mind you I tried a Samsung S23+ and the macro picture was /worse/ than my phone, embarassing.

    • +2

I'm in the middle of an RMA for the wireless charging stopping working at the moment, and it's a very easy process.

Put in a request for a callback, which arrived within 30 seconds, spoke to mate on the phone for about 5 minutes, no, I'm not doing a factory reset, given it's a hardware fault (phone didn't charge even when turned off), and he put the request through.

Replacement phone arrived Sydney to Melbourne within 7 hours via Startrack, which is unheard of, and currently making sure all my apps work before sending my original phone back.

I'm pretty picky on hardware, and I've scrutinized the replacement, which I understand are factory refurbished units, and I can't pick a single thing with it…

I've had Huawei and Samsung phones in the past, and Samsung were a bloody nightmare to deal with, with a known issue with the Bluetooth chips being burnt out when using GPS, claiming I shouldn't ever use the phone for navigation (say what?)

The only thing Google don't have is company stores like Apple do, but I've never found the need to go to an Apple store aside from buying a couple of iPhones for my wife over the years, and an RMA for one of hers when the screen died, which they dealt with on the spot, full data transfer, model upgrade and walked out without spending any money…

    • +1

If within warranty, absolutely fine. My Pixel needed a screen replaced. I had to send it interstate (Vic to NSW) to Google’s preferred repair centre. They repaired the thing the moment they received the parcel, and I had the phone back via courier the next day. In less than 48 hours done and dusted.

    • I've owned all the Pixels in XL/Pro format except for the 4 & 5. They've all been absolutely fine - and since I usually just pass them on to family or friends when I upgrade, I know they've all lasted very well.

I have had only one interaction with Google support. My Pixel 3's phone connection suddenly died (assuming radio or antenna fault) and Google sent me a warranty replacement with zero fuss. They even do the exchange where they send the new phone first so you aren't without a phone and can do a direct data transfer.

I have nothing but good things to say about Pixel devices. They aren't usually the absolute fastest, nor do they usually have the best battery life, but they work smoothly and reliably, they don't have the maddening bloat that Samsung devices have, they get better over time as Google rolls out new software features, and their cameras make me look like a great photographer despite a total lack of talent or skill.

  • How this compare to oppo x5 pro

    • I considered the two recently and ended up with the Oppo Find X5 Pro 256GB $865 from JB. Oppo has way faster charging, higher screen res, and better battery life. Whilst the Pixel arguably has a better camera, the reported average battery life was a deal-breaker for me. The X5 Pro still has a great camera btw.

      • I have both and i was shocked to see for night shots X5 pro just smashing through Pixel. I am not coming back to Samsung or Pixel after trying the last oppo honestly speaking.

  • +1

Decent prices, stack with discounted gift cards!

    256GB @ $1149
    512GB @ $1299

    Maybe add to post OP.

Also, Google Store will price match - you order from them, contact them for price match, and they refund the difference once the item ships.

Good to stack with 10% back with Google Store 2TB plans…

  • Pixel 7 Pro is using a curved screen. Seen a lot of post about the LCD issues. I had note9 and S9, both also suffers the same fate, so guessing there is a connection with curved screen and LCD issues. In my personal opinion, better to go with the regular Pixel 7 as it is using the flat screen.

    • +3

      The PP7 screen is fantastic.

  • Bah,… i still want a pixel 7 i missed out on because testras ID check dosnt work,

    • Pro or non-Pro? I have an unopened, sealed Pixel 7 Pro 128GB I bought at the EOFY. Willing to beat this price if you're interested?

      • It was Pixel 7 @499

Not a good deal. Only consider Google when it's heavily discounted, the quality is just not there yet.

Pixel 7 is the worst pixel I've ever used. Switched to S23 Ultra. Battery life was terrible and occasional signal issues made it even worse.

I was eagerly waiting to switch to P8 but as soon as I found out that the P8 would also have the Tensor chip, I switched to Samsung.

I miss some Google features but I'm less frustrated now.

    • You can't compare a mid range phone with a flagship double it's price lmao At least compare 7 pro with S23 ultra which is still $500 more.

If you had the money to spend on S23 ultra why didn't you buy a 7 pro, larger phone = larger battery = higher battery life.

      The modem could improve, true.

      • Typo, I missed the pro part, I was referring to Pro.

Still it's apple to oranges. But I was trully happy with Pixel 5 than 7Pro despite pixel 5 being mid range phone.

  • The Pixel 7 Pro 128GB for $678 on release with slight mucking around with the HN/Optus deal ended up being a steal (immediate contract termination strat), definitely the best possible phone on the market for me at the time too, very happy. Though now I'm not sure if I'll ever be as satisfied buying a new phone again unless I magically manage a similar saving level.
