      Got this thank you!

      • Did you get a tracking code?

    • -1

Anyone willing to chime in on the real performance value of getting a 4090 (or 3070 vs. 1650?

Would a 4GB 1650 play AAA games at 1080p at a reasonable frame rate?

  • Can anyone speak to how good these are? I was thinking about getting a Lenovo Legion Pro 7i with a 4080, but this seems better than that with the 4090. Am I missing something?

    • +4

I actually purchased it when it first came out, rediculously good price back then which was actually below this one. It's pretty great. Extremely good for the price.

There's a fair bit on it in previous threads.

      Just be aware that:
The cpu doesn't actually use the newer architecture. Probably not actually relevant in most use cases.
The laptop 4090 is more in keeping with a desktop 4070ti

It's an older chassis - eg 1 thunderbolt and no other usb c, 16:9 screen, etc
It has a really bad keyboard layout (weird placement of delete and power keys, messed up nav cluster, no numpad on a 17 inch)
      - I mostly use an external keyboard but it really bothers me if I have to use the laptop's keyboard
      - the pseudo mech keys are actually quite nice otherwise

It does have an m.2 slot spare which isn't mentioned on the hp website
      I don't think there's actually a muc switch

That said, very hard to beat at this price. Despite all these draw backs would still go for this and the "4090" over a newer chassis and a 4080.

      • Did you mainly get it for gaming? How's the battery life?

        • +2

you are not going to get any battery life out of these chunky laptops. an hour at best

if you check reviews they will probably pitch it at 3-4 hours which is a load of bs because synthetic battery benchmarks means f*** all and does not represent real life usage in the least

          • @Brrrrt: Well I plan to work on this as wellllll. So like if I can disable the RTX using a mux switch or something and lower FPS Can go 3-4 hours?

And this would be the same in Legion Pro 5 I'm getting? It has an 80w battery lol.

            • @DrDan: From a technical perspective, so long as you don't play games and can disable the RTX4090 you should get OK battery life, but it depends on the size of the battery. NVIDIA has Optimus iirc, which should help?

        • Mostly got it for gaming and to use as a desktop replacement I could carry while on business trips.

Battery is shockingly bad. Even disabling the 4090 it's not great.

That said it's much nicer to do work on than a more portable laptop due to the extra screen real estate. If I need to take notes or something I'll bring my tablet.

if you have the money, this is well worth it. a 4080 mobile is 50% faster than the 4070 and 4090 is another 10% on top of the mobile 4080.

big differences to warrant the price hike.

          • @Brrrrt: Yeah man I was looking at other 4090's they start at freaking 4k. Can defs afford this.

          • @Brrrrt: The problem with 4080 is its still 12GB when you are paying so much.

        • How'd you get $2074 with 3yr onsite warranty?

    • This one has 16Gigs of VRAM.

  • +1

Awesome find. Got it on the last sale. Nothing to complain given the price.

A bit of correction/addition to your post:

    • this is 150w 'TGP', but nvidias dynamic boost adds a 25w on top and we usually refers to that as the full wattage for mobile chips, and this chassis is good enough to sustain that 175w as well

    • mobile 4090 only lose out to 4070ti in FHD and QHD, as long as you have an UW or 4k monitor to hook it up to. this will be better.

  • -5

Got this and NOT impressed what so ever.

      Share more my guy!

      • -1

I would, but been down voted so comment is not visible. Now no point sharing what's happened with this machine and the issues.

        • +1

          bitcha*s behaviour

          • -1

@DrDan: Sure is, multiple issues with the machine and bricked just out of warranty. But fanboys who can't even afford the machine down voting comments when there's legit quality issues. So sucks for whoever bought it.

            • @LowRange: The 4090 isn't even a year old. How can your laptop be out of warranty?

              • @Guybrush57: I have the 3060 card in mine. The issue isn't the card, it's numerous other problems. Take the screen for instance, flimsy, poor blacks, dead pixels https://ibb.co/kG3CpmL

It freezes watching videos, but sounds keep playing regardless of driver updates, different browsers like Brave etc. Keyboard backlight randomly works or only some light up.

Currently now the main board has failed. Tried 2 new Samsung M2 drives and Windows 11 still can't find a drive to install on. Number of other issues, this is on a $3k device which has never been used mobile.

HP have only 98% feedback on Ebay, and others in this deal have had issues too. You could say it's a bad OMEN.

Oh and when I bought the laptop I also bought a $3k desktop and HP screwed me around for 2 months getting orders delivered.

                • +1

@LowRange: Try looking for a driver to load during Windows installation to help recognise your SSD. I hadn't had to do that since XP but for some reason my ASUS laptop needed needed it to allow Windows 11 to install.

                  • @Guybrush57: Thanks mate, and yes it needs the Intel RST driver extracted and added to the USB made with the Windows media creation toolkit.

(In case somone comes across this post via Google the process is here https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_4859717-4859823-16 ).

The 2 drivers get found but the machine just loops showing no drives in the Windows setup. I've tried adding a new Samsung 980 and a 970 and even combinations of 2 drives including the original Samsung mz-vl21t0a drive. She's shagged.

                • @LowRange: Should get HP to replace your laptop. Seems to be something wrong with the hardware causing issues.

          • +2

@DrDan: Well what do you know, looking through the comments and there's people saying:

            • Power supply died after 3 months and has been swapped out (new one arrived in 2 days - quick) - Just keep the plastic cover that the power supply is wrapped in. As THAT wrapper has a tiny sticker on it which is the part number ID (with a QR code) that HP will ask you for. It's designed to be removed, but luckily, just didn't get around to it.
            • Touchpad left button stopped working. Quick call to HP Support (answered in 2 mins) reset the touchpad config and all was OK again.

Then there's multiple others saying the machine freezes up, people having to under volt it. The dead pixels, poor display, now saying there is no hdd despite putting 3 new ones in, power brick like a ball and chain.

            For over $3k it's a steaming pile.

    Why wouldnt i just get a ps5?

      Or just an avocado.

      • Thats a steal

I was very much interested in this and was thinking about ordering this and cancelling yesterdays 7800X3D. But my legs were in 2 boats.

Should I just conisder portability - use at desk with a larger monitor and later take it outside or to bed surfing lazily and continuing where I left off.

    OR

Should I just keep using the desktop, which is cheaper but chunkier, upgradable and my 3080Ti is already this powerful but cant use anywhere else.

Now its OOS, but anyway for those who switched from desktop to laptop, any thoughts?

    • If you can use a desktop then stick with that for the upgradeability. I got this because I travel and a desktop is not a viable option. No complaints so far playing all games on ultra. Does get a bit loud but that's about it.

  • +1

I got this laptop earlier this year for the magic price.

Great machine, congrats to those that got one.

It replaced my desktop and haven't looked back for its portability and performance.

I use it on a 4k lg tv..playing Diablo 4 and baulders gate at max .. smooth as butter

    Damn it missed out again….

    • Yeah same, and I was specifically looking for a sale on this laptop last night. Then a couple of hours after going to sleep I get ozbargained hard. :P

    • Looks like there's stock again @On1

  • Is it!? Still says out of stock for me

    • Yeah, can't see any stock either.

      • Still says available if you use eBay App on Mobile :) @On1 (others saying the same below).

link to the video overview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnSJXwVmJ5k
90 min review, unboxing, how to undervolt, overclocking and a bunch of performance stats (before/after undervolting).

Laptop is bundled with "HP Omen Gaming Hub"
    - contains dedicated Fanatical page
    - launcher page of any installed games (Steam, epic, etc)
    - games/merch deals, giveaways (Omen exclusive: Hogwarts Legacy currently with a 30% discount to $64.99 through Fanatical)
    - access to GeForce NOW games library (1400+ games)
    - Light studio (extended RGB config tool)
    - wallpaper gallery - 6000+ wallpapers
    - HP optimizer (games booster, customisable cleaner (memory, files))
    - Cam and Voice enhancer
    - Omen 17 containing
    - - system vitals
    - - undervolting
    - - network booster
    - - lighting
    - - performance control
    - - graphics switcher (via Nvidia software: Auto select, NVIDIA GPU or optimus modes) and
    - - macros
Other (bloat)ware: express VPN, LastPass, the usual windows/xbox apps, MyHP and HP QuickDrop

Note: Screen brightness says 300nit, but review testing was closer to 380 (HP scores own goal). Good for indoors and have it usually connected it to an ext monitor and its better.

Documentation about the 2nd SSD from HP states it has a 500Gb limit, which is weird as the primary can take a 1tb SSD - have never tested it and keen to hear if anyone knows any different. Note that the US specs for the same laptop can have a i9 processor, bigger 2TB SSD, not available in Oz.
The power supply is 330W to run that "4090" laptop graphics card - be prepared for it to be heavy with a square form factor (not a cube).
Nice to see a SD card reader.
Normal web browsing is very quiet and as expected, fans spin up with graphics card use. Vents are side mounted, so your mouse hand can get warmed up. I have it on a laptop cooler, which doesn't spin up as often.

Have had it from from the last deal for about 5 months. So far:
    * Power supply died after 3 months and has been swapped out (new one arrived in 2 days - quick) - Just keep the plastic cover that the power supply is wrapped in. As THAT wrapper has a tiny sticker on it which is the part number ID (with a QR code) that HP will ask you for. It's designed to be removed, but luckily, just didn't get around to it.
    * Touchpad left button stopped working. Quick call to HP Support (answered in 2 mins) reset the touchpad config and all was OK again.

    Hope this has helped.

    • Legend! I have a Lenovo legion Pro 5 order but decided to get this and will cancel that as not shipped yet. Just because of what I've heard with Lenovo warranty!

  • And we are back!

  • More stock available.

It doesn't proceed past the buy it now if you click buy it now it says out of stock

      • I bought one and post the comment. It was showing 9 available when I posted.

        • Yeah I missed the boat on this one too, was distracted with family. Please anyone, ping a comment if you notice it in stock again!

  • 16gig of vram for mobile 4090, no thanks.

    • Uhhhh… you'd prefer 4GB VRAM maybe?

      • No I prefer 2gig of vram with 22gig additionally.

  • +1

I envy the people who can afford to buy a laptop at this price point. One day I will too when inflation makes a $3K laptop appear affordable.

    • Wait, your wage is going up with inflation?

      • Nop, the 3K in absolute terms is coming down with inflation but I get your point. Thanks for bursting my bubble.

  • Anyone got a tracking code?

  • My omen 4090 from last deal would stop responding after 1-2 hrs using. Not every time but around 30% which is frustrating. I have already updated drivers, uninstalled omen gaming hub, restored my windows but none helped. Did a HP hardware diagnostic and results are passed. Anyone experienced same problem?

    • Go back to HP for warranty support.

    • Can you reinstall windows rather than restore?

      • This is actually after reinstallation of windows. It works fine in the first month then one day it was suddenly frozen. I restarted it by holding power button but it will restart again and again every few seconds and cannot even get into Windows. It was like a system corruption thing. I contacted HP and did system restore, windows repair as they told me but eventually I had to download the windows recovery image from HP and did a fresh installation of windows and lost everything in this laptop as I did not have a 2nd ssd.

Now it has this random freezing issue. It is very hard to reproduce the problem as it might run 3A games for 4-5 hours without any problem but die while I am typing comments on Ozbargain,

        • I bought this same laptop a couple of months ago and I experience the same random system freezes.

Similarly, it hasn't happened when gaming, but has happened several times randomly in past month during non-graphics intensive stuff like browsing (Chrome)/youtube. About a month ago, I cloned the original 1TB SSD onto a Samsung 980 Pro 2TB to use into the PCIE4 NVME slot, so I thought it might've been SSD related, but diagnostics seemed fine.

Windows Event Viewer doesn't seem to help with finding the root cause aside from "critical kernal-power" related messages (prob. because of the forced power button needing to be used when it freezes).

And this happens with no undervolt applied, sometimes freezes would happen within half-hr of powering it on, sometimes a couple of hours,

Recently, it's been a bit less frequent (and I've got a 0.090v underclock applied)

The only thing I haven't tried is a fresh install of Windows (with no pre-installed HP stuff) as I've read OMEN Discord/Reddit with people suggesting this might help

Would be nice to find out what keeps causing it

So far, it hasn't been frequent enough to immensely frustrate me yet, but I'll prob. give Windows re-install a go and hopefully that solves it…

          • @keepingtrack: I did a clean installation last night. I used windows 11 image from Microsoft directly. Nothing from HP anymore except a few from Windows update. And it freezes again just now. It must be a hardware issue.

            • @dddd2: Try get it replaced under warranty. I think this should qualify. It's just hard to replicate… If you have video of the crashes it might help.

              • @Circly: Thanks @Circly. I will contact HP and see what they say.

        • Add me to the list of people having the same problem, as well as other issues. Mine froze, corrupted Windows and would not boot, could not recover Windows lost a bunch of stuff.

Reformatted Windows, same problem kept happening. Now it won't see the drive at all. You could say it's a 'bad Omen' seeing others having issues on such an expensive machine.

          • @LowRange: Did you call warranty and get it replaced or something?

  • is the $1500 difference vs the 3080ti deal worth it?

    • bit late, but for next time: 4090m is easily 60% better performance in games and more. more than worth it

      • thanks yeah dont really game that much. but $3k pus laptop is too much for me.

  • I still haven't got a tracking code etc, opened a claim on eBay. Any ideas? Contacting HP directly will help?

    • I also haven't got a tracking code. Try to contact them using their website chat.

      • Just got off the call with lady, she will get back to me on my email. I pushed for a discount, she said let's see I will get back to you.

        • I'm also waiting for an email from them. I contacted them a few hours ago.

          • @sail: Ayyy nice. I raised the case via eBay as well. I'll keep you and other updated here

          • @sail: Just got a reply saying it's 1st Sept now

            • @DrDan: Did you get any discount?

              • @sail: I replied back let's see

              • @sail: Did you get a response?

                • @DrDan: No, I haven't got a response. I will call them tomorrow.

                • @DrDan: I just got a tracking code.

                  • @sail: I might just cancel it and get Legion i7 pro. 4080 almost same price much rounded package.
