The Matow version was popular recently @$24.23 so thought this was worth a post.

These are great if you never mastered how to use a tamper with a handle. It's much easier to get consistent results because of the rebate and depth adjustment.

  • 53mm Adjustable Distributor & Tamper-53mm base designed to work with the tapered Breville 54mm portafilter baskets, including the Barista Express, Pro, Touch, Bambino Plus, Infuser and Duo-Temp Pro.
  • Consistent Brew- Get consistent distribution and pressure every time making it easy to pull your perfect shot right at home, Leveling your grounds before tamping creates a uniform and consistent tamp.
  • Adjustable Depth - Set your desired tamping depth for consistent tamping pressure every time.
  • Dual Head- Distributor/Leveler and tamper are designed in one, double sides are available.
  • Pro Tips-Ensure your portafilter basket is fully dosed with coffee grinds to get the right amount of pressure from the tamper for a tighter pack and richer flavor. For best results, groom the top of the basket with a finger or flat edge before leveling and tamping. Brew with good, filtered water.

Thingiverse has a 3D printable version. Works a treat.

Link? The weight of this is what makes it so nice to use.

        • I've seen that video, it only has the WDT tool.

      • Dont need the weight in any way. Its pre tamp.
Just google thingiverse Breville distributor. Take your pic (i went with the one that sits nicely in the single bean hopper - obviously printed that as well).

        • This is also a tamper. It's all I use to tamp.

          • @theguyrules: Okee dokes. Well the tamp side diameter is wider than 54mm. Makes no sense, but is. So you might want to scale that side to make it a tamper.

Side note, I used to use a Swiss vitamin bottle as a tamp (got a BES870 from hard rubbish). Then bought the proper tamp. Find it a little too small (mm gap right round the outside). Leaves somw coffee on the edge. Swiss leaves nothing. So, a Swiss bottle is better than the proper Breville tamp.

            • @tunzafun001: Yeah it's like 0.5mm too small but I've not found it causing issues. Like you said, so is the proper Breville one.

    • Do you have a link to this?

I couldn't be bother spend time using this especially doing a morning coffee run :)

But still good price for those who need it.

    • +1

      It takes like… seconds.

      • Seconds matter

        • That's what she said.

      • +4

Well it wouldn't be very useful on coffee runs anyways

Will it work on breville 54mm portafilter

Read the description and mysteries will be revealed.

      • Well, that took me a second

        • +1

Don't expect me to read the description until I've had my coffee.

Nice hefty tamper but the distributor idea is a gimmick. It makes the top of the grounds look nice but does nothing to improve the distribution below the surface.

A decent traditional tamper with a handle is so much better to use and does a far better job imho.

    • Yeah I don't use the distributor side but as I said in the description this is much easier to get consistent results because of the rebate when using the tamper side.
I also level the grinds with the back of a knife before tamping.

      • +1

The knife trick is the way

Hmm I tried to post but got blocked for affiliate which was not intentional…

But WDT is what people are doing these days - prior to tamping.

amazing. Just need a custom glove for my finger to press the button on the coffee machine now and something custom to cover the handle of my coffee cup because it all makes a difference

    • I swear coffee making at home is just an excuse for people to get more and more gadgets…

  • Who else uses distilled water on their coffee machines? I use small amount of sodium bicarb to reconstitute.

    • +1

      Reverse osmosis filleted for me

    • +2

I use RO water too, in the hopes that I need to descale it less often.

      • Nice. one would never have to descale as the water I use doesn't have anything that can deposit. Initially I thought I might taste it but I couldn't!

        • +1

I heard it can leech out the copper or whatever, but I figure worst-case I get this cool ring around my eyes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kayser–Fleischer_ring

    • filtered, not distilled. The Barista Express comes with water filter and the instructions specifically say don't put in any other liquid than tap water

      • +1

They do that so you replace the internal water filter.. Just filter your own water and throw out theirs..

It's nice of them to advertise you can have smoother* pouring latte art because of this gadget! What a bargain

  • Yikes

Not good and pricy enough. We want rgb and bluetooth

      • Haha, at that price, it should be motorised with wireless charging. :D

This tamp is very heavy at 500g. It slipped out of my hand a couple of times and almost dropped it on the ground when I was doing my workflow fairly quickly. I have another tamp (just distributor without the flat surface) which is about 250g and that is much more comfortable to use.

  • I have the Matow version, it's well made and functional, but I no longer use it due to 2 reasons.

    1) The distributor side lightly tamps the coffee grounds to level, it doesn't just distribute, almost like a premature tamp. So I only WDT now.

    2) Particular to Breville, their 18g basket is smaller, coffee grounds pile up higher which is fine to use this combo to tamp. But the tamping side doesn't go far enough for slightly larger aftermarket baskets, even at maximum adjustable depth. IMS 18g basket is about 15% larger in volume than Breville 18g basket.

    • So the IMS basket can actually hold 20-21g then. So fill up to the top?

      • But they also have a 20g basket, people wanting 20-21g dose can go for the 20g basket.

I think Breville basket is just too small, it doesn't allow enough head space. Their idea is to use the included razor leveller to get rid of the excess to maintain clearence.

When I first got the Breville machine, more often than not the puck got stuck to the shower screen. People told me that it was because I didn't use fresh beans, later I learned that was a load of baloney. It was due to the 3-way solenoid valve creating a vacuum when the extraction stopped, the puck got suck up due to lack of head space.

That never happened after swapping to a "proper" 18g basket. I also added a puck screen to keep the shower screen clean.

        • My puck does stick to the group head pretty often. I might try a new basket if that is the case.

The puck screen idea is great in theory but it ends up being a bit of a hassle as I have to dirty my hands to pull the screen out from the knock box. I stopped using it after a while.

          • @KaTst3R: I have got a magnet for that, but to my surprise the puck screen is not magnetic. I have seen videos of people using shot mirror to pickup puck screens, so some of them are magnetic.

Anyway, I just flip the portafilter, the puck screen doesn't drop immediately until I push it. Catch it and give it a rinse while knock using the other hand.

        • I just give a quick pulse on the manual button to release the vacuum. Never had a stuck puck since.

          • @miicah: But that's an unnecessary actuation of the pump.

I would just use the portfilter to tap the puck, it falls right back into the backet. Though I don't like the idea the puck touches the shower screen, so would be the best to prevent it.

  • Anyone have experience with the spring loaded tamper and how it compares to the normcore one?

  • What grind setting do people use on a Barista Express?

Im using Grind setting 2. Pressure gauge is at top of the good espresso range. But the extraction is still too fast for my liking.

Did see Hoons coffee recomend using a dimmer dial / fan controller on the pump. Tempted to do the mod.

    • Also curious, mine is on 6 atm but i only just enter the first notch of the espresso range, if I up the fine-ness it just blocks the water from coming through completely.

Also normally a bit of water pooling on top of the puck. So very confused.
