Portable pc + portable type c 4k monitor = fap machine!

    • +8

      AHEM

      portable* fap machine

      • +4

So when you say "fap"… is that what I think it means, or is it some new tech term?

        • +35

New tech term. It stands for Fibreoptic Aliasing Processing. It's a new type of internet routing technology

        • +4

So when you say "fap"… is that what I think it means, or is it some new tech term?

You're correct, it's a "For Academic Purposes" PC which means that's targeted towards research and educational usage, otherwise known as "fapping".

          • +2

@Gnostikos: Sounds great! Tell us all the places we can fap?

            • +3

@Not Applicable: The best place is the library. Make sure to use the public computers too.

              • +3

@reloxation: Bring your own desk wipes because someone may have (academically) fapped there before you.

              • @reloxation: Be sure to announce your intentions to your desk neighbours so they know to avoid breaking your concentration.

  • Realistically what games can be played ?

    • -1

      Minesweeper

    • +2

CS:GO, LoL, Rocket League, Genshin etc.

Might be able to emulate some older consoles, can emulate Android.

      • +8

Can emulate fine up to PS2.

        • Good to know.
          Cheers!

        • +1

Actually some PS3 games work fine as well.

          • +1

@boxall: Emulates Switch games just fine too… most of the big ones at least.

      • what kind of FPS with CS:GO at 1920x1080?

        • 1280×960 stretched only

    • +2

It can play pretty much anything

      • -1

How well is the real question.

        • +4

If you're unable to watch the video I linked then you're probably unable to actually play games in the first place so it doesn't really matter?

      • All this really confirmed for me is that Valheim is just so terribly optimised.

    • +1

I can play GTA5 at lower settings @ 1080 getting 40fps on my slower 5300u.

  • Pro vs max?

    • I was wondering the same thing.
It is not immediately obvious what the difference is.

      • +4

The main important difference I believe is the MAX runs at 54W TDP, from AMD default 45W TDP for the chip. Whilst that sounds good, you are increasing max temps by 11deg and increased fan noise with effective increase of only 3-5% performance. Probably not great for long term, but more importantly not worth the premium in price IMHO.

Also you get the nicer power brick and a newer system fan design and a newer case design. Again not worth the 30% plus price premium for that.

        • I think the max was around 480 the other day after a discount and then a $70 off coupon. Seems to not be the case now so this would be the better buy.

Might wait for them to drop in the $300s

          • @Fergy1987: Wow, really? You should have posted it, that would have been a real bargain if a 5800H model ever dropped into the 300s. Never seen it before though at that kind of price. Anyways I pulled the trigger as it is the lowest I've seen and good price for me to give it a go :)

    • Link to max?

  • +2

Wow. Thought my 32Gb one was a bargain at $559.
For those that are happy with 16Gb get this!!!!

Like mine, newer versions come with DP and HDMI and not 2x HDMI.

    • +1

      DisaPoint

  • Ozbargain post states Win 11 but on the amazon.com.au link I cannot find any reference to Windows being included.

    • Reviews suggest its preloaded.

    • Its stated in the About Item. First dot point paragraph:

【Tower performance & powerful processor】Equipped with AMD Ryzen 5800H, 8C/16T, 3.2 GHz, up to 4.4 GHz, you can transform your desk into a powerful workstation by simply adding a keyboard and mouse(The mini pc does not include keyboard and mouse). It comes pre-installed with W-11 and has no bloatware whatsoever. Beelink SER5 mini pc can be used for video and photo editing, office tasks, design applications, 4K video playback, virtualization work and games.

      • Thanks for that info. I didn't think to expand the About Item section.

    • Can confirm Win 11 is preinstalled and activated out of the box.

  • How are the thermals? Does it run hot? A downside of the i5 8th gen NUC I have is it runs hot under load, and the tiny, cheap fan that Intel uses is very loud.

    • +1

This would likely be better in that regard
Better cooler and the amd chips are very efficient

    • +1

I have the same. You can adjust the fan curves in the BIOS and it makes a huge difference. The default settings let it get too hot before kicking the fan in, and then ramp it up rapidly. If you run the fan at a slower quieter level when the CPU is not yet overheating, you can usually keep the heat in check before it gets out of control. I went with something like 80 Celsius, 40% (maybe 35%?) duty cycle, 5% increment per degree Celsius. You can read more about that here: https://community.intel.com/t5/Intel-NUCs/NUC8i7BEH-high-fan… .

  • I wonder how this plays as an NVIDIA type pc. I do have a 3080 in my PC room but would love to remotely stream in 4k the game.

  • What's so special about this Mini PC? Is it worth getting?

    • +4

It's small and more power than you need for a HTPC.

      • +1

Perfect for running Linux + Plex and *arr containers

        • Would it be powerful enough to transcode H265 footage or only H264?

  • Diablo 4 compatible?

  • +1

Does this come with the power supply or do you have to buy one separately

    • Aus power.

  • I currently have two monitors daisy chained to my laptop. The port on my laptop is a Thunderbolt type USB-C. Looking at the specs for this mini PC didn't seem to have a Thunderbolt port.

Can someone confirm if it can support a daisy chain setup for 2 x 4k monitors?

    • +2

      Not daisy chain no
Can do 3x 4k monitors at 60hz, via HDMI, do and usb-c

  • Does anyone know if it is Win 11 Pro or Home?

    • Home. But let me confirm when in front of it.

      • Just checked. It is Pro. :-)

  • -1

do wish this price is for the unit with 32gb ram :(
    well, money saved.

    • the negger… sorry for your mom, sb.

  • +1

What is the advantage of this over the numerous cheaper refurbished business grade micro and mini PCs that come up all the time?

    • +1

      Size, processor. Win 11.

    • +4

Both more powerful and brand new for an extra $200. Would definitely rather save for this then buy those refurbs.

    • +1

The Ryzen 5800H is a really powerful CPU for this price, so in terms of bang-for-buck this would be a much better purchase.

Plus, it's brand new, includes W11, it's easily upgradable, it offers better I/O and nicer cooling and fan profile out of the box.

  • Can this replace a laptop and can I use Photoshop on it?

    • +1

      Photoshop is a yes, easily.

Replace a laptop… well it depends on how often you need to move around. For me I just sit and work at my desk, so this is perfect.

  • Seems like the $50 code no longer work

    • Yup same issue here

  • Can this display over USB-C? The image says it does but just wanted to confirm.

    • Can confirm it does and also for downstream power but your monitor or c type source needs to have enough juice to cover it's power draw for the latter. Don't know the technical but my monitor does 90w and I use it with that.

      • Thanks but I was too late to buy it with the discount. Better luck next time!

  • How’s this go vs steam deck in docked mode?

    • +1

Steam deck has better GPU onboard
This is better in pretty much every way performance wise

      • damn, pretty happy with how SD handles red dead 2 and cyberpunk - but wouldnt want to dip any more…
but also want an easy to use media pc option maybe will wait it out a bit more.

        • Steam deck is portable, this wouldn't be portable.
For home use, just use a laptop/PC?

This is more for work PC with limited desk space?
          Not really for gaming.

          • @congo: Just something low power I can keep connected to my projector in lounge.
            I
I have a gaming pc but it’s in my home office.

I have a steam deck but I keep it in my backpack or downstairs

I have a laptop but it’s my my home office or office too.

            • @Jimothy Wongingtons: Yeah, I have been trying to think of a use case for this.
I wouldn't use it for gamming for office as I have PC & consoles for that.

I have Nvidia Shield running plex server in the lounge room, so I could swap that out for this as it would be more powerful.
But the Shield is doing alright.

              • @congo: I should prob get around to setting up a plex server…. Only been saying that for like 10 years

  • +1

I bought this a few months ago as I have precious little space and to replace my laptop which I barely use other than at my desk. I have since been trying to question if there are any drawbacks.

It runs flawlessly for most home office tasks, runs cool and quiet and I play some age of empires on it (AoE 2 DE on a 4k 27in monitor) Best part it takes even less space and my monitor is able to power it directly so you pretty much put it away like a laptop when done.

  • Would this be good for home assistant?

    • +1

You could, but its honestly overkill for that. Depends on what your exact usecase is, but you'd do just fine with a $50 Rasp Pi for most automation tasks.

    • +1

I have been running HA on a pi 4B for years and it’s been flawless. As I expand, something like this comes in handy. Format it with Proxmox, install HA in a VM and run Plex/Jellyfin, TrueNAS etc in other VMs as run it as a small home server.

    • +2

If all you want is HA, pretty sure a raspberry pi would be a better choice. Lower price and power consumption.

  • i got this for my kids school work and it works great.

  • Coupon is back up.

  • Its back baby!!!!

    • its down again

  • Coupon is back again!

  • Coupon is gone

  • I'm in the process of putting together a desktop arcade emulator and am planning on using an old Raspberry Pi to get going.

I do want to consider something more powerful though in the future and had been considering finding a mini pc off Facebook marketplace… something like a Dell optiplex micro.

Would I be better off getting something like this?

    • +1

I went down the Raspberry Pi method - got too annoying and didnt have the power. I've seen a few vids on Optiplex micros that will get you to around PS1

This would be better if you want to get to PS2 - potential PS3 and maybe want to do some basic PC gaming.

    • Yes, cost to performance on these things is pretty nuts, especially considering the low power draw. Depending on the top end of your emulation needs, you could potentially go cheaper as well to keep costs down.

    • I have a RPi4 and gave up on it as it couldn't handle most of the stuff I wanted it to do. If you're happy playing games up to and incl PS1, then a Pi4 'may' be ok. Any console newer, don't bother.

I saw this 5800H mini PC on Amazon, but decided to spend a bit more and get the newer SER6 7735hs. The APU is much more powerful and has double the RAM, just wanted to future proof myself a little.

  • Probably the wrong forum for this question but does anyone know if this will support Dolby Vision if I buy this as a Kodi box?

    • No, this has no Dolby Vision certification unfortunately.

    • I believe that there is no pc Dolby Vision solution. At least for the "full spec" (the movies that look purple and green). I can play the "hybrid" ones though on PC.

      HLG, HDR+, PQ, HDR10, a gazillion different DV profiles…. HDR is such a flustercluck….

  • Code stop working?

  • Code isn’t working anymore :(

  • Code came back but I missed it :(

  • Anyone had experience running esxi on one of these beelink boxe? , I am looking to down size my home lab.
