I really like that they added a front dial for the A7C II, that was probably the biggest flaw with the A7C to me (besides from the viewfinder which has also been improved a little). Not a big fan of the pricing but hopefully it'll come down soon enough.

And slightly bigger grip. Plus looks like the grip is a bit more textured. But I picked up the A7C for around $1500ish so will be a long time before I can justify the upgrade at these prices.

    • Front dial is nice but I really would have loved to see higher resolution on the EVF and a small eyecup (like on the A6xxx)

  • How much is the cost of a decent lens for this camera? 1 kidney?

    • +3

24-105/4 G is a solid performer, would be 1500 or so

or if you are more of a landscape person, 16-35/4 Zeiss is about a grand

same story 70-200/4 if you need an outdoor sports or good portrait option, about 1500 on specials

or for about a grand 90/2.8 macro, superb for macro and portrait work

and look at Sigma range for some alternatives sometimes cheaper sometimes dearer

and the star performer one lens to rule them all is Tamron 35-150 2-2.8 but you need around $2k for that

this camera itself is overpriced for what it is tho

      • Add 20-70 F4 to that list for a pretty unique focal range. Also $1500. Tamron is working on a 17-50 f4 which I think will come in a little cheaper.

        • yes 20-70 would have been a huge factor if it was available when I decided to abandon Sony again

      • The 16-35 PZ has been $1013 on an ebay sale. That's leagues ahead of the old Zeiss in every way.

        • yeah I thought about it, just haven't seen reviews as I jumped off Sony system again

sounds promising as Zeiss was good, I had it and loved it

        • I recommend the PZ if you can find it around the $1K mark. Very light and sharp (especially at 35mm). I own the PZ and upgraded from the ZA.

The ZA, if you can find it around $750, is a fine lens too. I used it for many overseas trip and really like it. It's soft at 35mm (my main reason for upgrading to the PZ) but from 16mm to 28mm is a stellar performer. The weight is reasonable and its 16mm performance remains better than the PZ (which suffers from bad barrel distortion).

    • It's not too bad if you are a prime lens user

Depends on how you define "decent".
For me, Tamron 28-200 is sufficiently decent and is the one lens I would keep if I can only keep one. It's only around 1k.
But with FF there is so much potential and the price of lens can go over several grands.

  • Reduced environmental footprint thanks to use of 'recycled materials'. Wanted a A7CR but the price is crap and is more than a A7R V.

    • +1

Yeah the Australian pricing is just way out of whack. All the points being talked about in the other markets about a A7R V in a cheaper body does not apply to our market.

      • Yeah the Australian pricing is just way out of whack.

Blame the Aussie dollar for that

        Usd$3000 = 4640 aud + gst = $5100 aud

        • Our RRPs suck but we actually can get far better pricing than the US ever can when our stuff goes on sale, especially historically with Cashrewards/Shopback e.g. Sony 70-200 GM2 - 2700 AUD after cashback (~1745 USD, 2800 USD before tax in US), Sony A7RV - 3700 AUD after cashback (~2392 USD, 3800 USD before tax in US)

        • Feels like they priced the product at the worst time when AUD is weak. Rather than looking at an average. There is nothing wrong with that since they are building some buffer. But it does indicate a wider possible range of prices when they are on sale.

      • I wish they were more like other countries and just sold it at the proper pricing then max sale price was like $100. Instead they like to mark the price up by $1000 then do a ‘big sale’ and reduce it by $900. Pretty much just a matter of waiting for those sales.

  • For those who were interested in the Sony A6700 but figured they'd wait and see what the A7CII might be like (like me), that's quite the leap in price. I'll just stick with the A6700 now.

    • Yeah I ended up pulling the trigger on the A6700 for $1830 instead (sub $1700 after cashrewards). Was considering the A6700/A7CII for a second body and yeah I know its full frame vs APS-C but the A7CII is not worth almost twice the price to me personally.

      • How do you get this? Can you please share?

      • what did you have before the 6700? how do you find it compared to other cameras youve used?

        • Haven't really had a chance to test it yet. I've owned a few Sony RX100s, the A7 III/IV, A7C, A1.

First impressions are that I like the ergonomics much better than the A7C, front dial makes it a lot easier to shoot manual, photo/video/S&Q mode dial (like on the A7IV), more custom buttons, bigger grip and while the EVF has similar specs, it has an optional eyecup attachment which makes it much more comfortable to use. I've only taken a few test shots with it, AF seems snappy enough and supposedly it has the AF from the A7RV so I would expect it to be potentially more precise (though slower to track) than the A1.

Without even really having used the camera properly those changes alone make it real hard for me to even consider ever picking up the first A7C again…

          • @eecan: thanks for your input. interesting that you rate it over the a7c, despite the huge sensor difference

  • Review/overview from Petapixel: https://youtu.be/1p8SI2aksIg

    • Good review. Shame the improved IS performance depends on having IS sync lenses - bulky and pricy.

  • For those still wanting 61MP at the cheapest possible price, Sony direct store is selling 'refurbished' A7R V's for $3850. Not sure if worth it.

    ebay

    • -1

Price is still turdy for a second hand item.

      • +1

Not sure I'd agree, its not difficult to sell a second hand A7RV in good condition for $4k on ebay ($0 fee with ebay plus) or facebook marketplace. And personally I'd be more comfortable buying from Sony who has presumably done some sort of assessment (and possibly work) to recertify the device for sale vs random private reseller.

Maybe not an amazing price for seconds/second hand but not bad either.

  • Hoping gen-1 A7Cs finally start falling in price in the months to come!

    • RRP: yes
Second hand: probably not I reckon.

  • Sony store price beat by $1, a7C ii black $3298 LOL
