Sony WH-1000XM4 Noise-Cancelling Bluetooth Headphones $395 + Del (C&C/ in-Store) @ The Good Guys/Officeworks / Shipped @ Amazon

320

Edit: about $20 cheaper using an eBay Plus code, see Hamza23's comment below.

Amazon and Officeworks appear to be price-matching TGG. You could also ask JB HiFi to price match, if that's more convenient for you.

TGG only have the black version on sale, the silver version shows at $439. OfficeWorks and AmazonAU have both colours for $395.

Note that as Officeworks are no longer price matching, you can actually get from them for about $375, as their "lowest price guarantee" says they will beat all competitor's prices by 5%, if you bring it to their attention. Free shipping too from OW, as the order is more than $55.

AmazonAU black colour only link: (white colour expired)

With so many stores, who to buy from? Evaluate who is more convenient for you, for purchasing, and also consider how difficult warranty returns will be if there is a problem. Everyone seems to have free shipping if you want to get them delivered.

Read the comments from the previous deal for these headphones, to see if they are for you.

    I bought this for $300 in 2020 - 3 years ago

Lots of things have been cheaper in the past, historic prices from more than a few months ago aren't useful in making purchase decisions today.

Here's Amazon's price history, it'll give you some indication of how prices have changed over time:
      https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/product/B08F4WX2PM

      • I agree. These comments are absolutely useless and doesn’t help anyone in the present moment. Unless you have a Time Machine, no one cares. Well done on your purchase, we are very happy for you. The price of goods and services change all the time and there are several factors that influence this. Google “inflation”, “supply and demand” or just “economics”.

        • +5

Agreed, can't be mad at OP for posting a good deal for people in the market for quality headphones.

          • @gusk2: It happens all the time and will only deter someone from wanting to purchase thinking it may reach that price again. Who knows? Maybe it will, maybe it won’t. Just buy the damn thing and enjoy it. Obsessing over “getting the lowest possible price” isn’t healthy and borderline OCD.

        • +1

Just economics could be what people are willing to pay for them. Posting $400 as a deal may encourage people to buy it keeping the price at $400. I picked up the XM5'S for under $400 last year as well.

      • Headphones/earbuds are constantly on sale, they keep going up and down all year, I assume the market research shows people buy it on impulse so its never on a constant low, catch a lot of buyers who buy at whatever price

Im shocked this is $395, Im assuming its the new "high" before it goes down to 250-30 in a couple of weeks now that the XM5 is out

I saw the earbud version for $250 a couple of weeks ago

        • +2

The XM5s came out a year ago and its many tradeoffs actually caused the XM4s to maintain their price/even increase.

          • @dogsryummy: Plenty of reviews and comparisons of both.
Similar enough with fairly minor pros and cons.

Sold my xm4 for $270 before they were too old and got the xm5.

Just get the ones you can get the best deal on.

    • Thanks - I won’t upgrade my XM3 unless I spot a bargain.

    • yeah, I'm thinking the same thing , still using my 1000XM2 and there is minor problem may need an upgrade. But the price now has been totally changed.

    • +1

Yeah I got the xm5 for the Goodguys for $415 (called them and asked for best price). Later claimed price protection for $350 when JB had them cheap.

So you should be able to get the xm4 cheaper (maybe refurbished $230-250)

  • +2

As an alternative, probably worth considering the Sony refurbs on eBay, sold by SonyAustralia, which generally sell for under $300

    • are the refurbished ones any good? I haven't had experience with them before.

      • +5

Mostly positive reviews. Personally, I prefer the fit of the Bose QC range.

Based on the number of refurbished headphones sold by Sony on eBay, there is serious reason to be concerned about the reliability of this model. And/or a very high rate of customer returns

      • +3

Mine was practically brand new. The exterior packaging was damaged but the interior was immaculate. Unit was perfect and felt brand new.

      • My XM3's were refurbished and they honestly looked brand new

      • Got a refurbished one for $237 in May 2021. Still running great but just feel a bit hot on ears in summer

      • -1

Just wipe the stains off with a soft cloth and some rubbing alcohol, good as new 👍😛

    • +1

Also, brand new silver and black direct from eBay Sony store are $399, minus one of the various eBay discount codes should get you down to $379 or less.
Or buy from Sony web site $399 - 10%, use the Sony 10% discount code for new account sign up.

I bought a pair of Sony noise cancelling headphones in 2019 (WH-CH700N) and they were awfully uncomfortable. Head and neck pain after 30 minutes. Admittedly they're a different price-point at around $200, but still an extremely disappointing purchase and I'll stick with Bose or nothing in future.

    • +7

totally different headphones, these are mad comfy

  • +3

Sony have seconds XM5's for $ 398 on ebay as an option also
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/285114035521

    Cheers

  • letting yall know your jb can discount the beige ones down to like 370-390. just ask super nicely if they can do it. or ask them if they can fit in an extra care for the ticketed price.

  • I have a pair of XM4 purchased 2 years ago, recently the right speaker started making a hissing/popping noise when noise cancelling is turned on. Has anyone ever experienced this kind of problem with theirs?

    • Probably a dozen reasons, but I had something similar with my XM3s.

Happened a couple of times after I put them on too soon after washing my hair, and some moisture was transferred.
      Does that sounds familiar?

I was lucky in that it cleared up soon after each time.

    • Had this same problem with my XM3's. Only happens with long ANC usage and/or humidity from warm ears/environment. A long term fix is to place a silica packet in the side/s with issues. Here's a reddit thread I found where other users fixed this same problem. Instead of a loose packet which u can hear rattling around, I used scotch foam mounting tape to stick silica balls to.

    • yeah, they replaced the microphone in the right speaker. It took them about a month,
Had thought they'd very quickly replace them with a refurb but no.

    • My XM3 right speaker is popping off as I write this. Common issue with these headphones.

    • +12

You're seriously comparing second hand pricing to new?

        • +4

Not sure which world are you living in where new product is sold at the same price as second-hand product…

          • @edfoo: Must be on some pretty good stuff too lol

    • +4

I got given these so buying them second had at $200 is a joke

  • +1

i'd wait for the new Bose QC Ultra. rumored to announce this month.

They are likely to push down prices of QC700 and the Sony XM5's.

  • Waiting for new Marshall over ear ANC

  • These are notoriously bad for Bluetooth connectivity with windows PC. I.e. trying to listen to anything in a shared office space.

I stopped using them for that exact reason, instead I use my phone, shouldn’t have to do this but it is what it is

  • Got them as "new, with box damage" for $319 ($339 without voucher) just a couple weeks ago, from the Sony eBay store.

  • Spent a few minutes lodging a 28 degrees price match claim, only to realise it's the XM4 on sale, not my XM5. :(

    • I thought all those price protection schemes had been stopped. Did you apply for yours long ago, and have you somehow kept it running?

      • +2

They are still going but not for new customers.

  • Just bought a refurb of this model 2 weeks ago from the Sony ebay store for $279 using an ebay+ coupon.

Absolutely loving it so far. The noise cancelling is brilliant, especially for things like load fans or consistent background noise. Headset feels very comfortable and folds up nicely, which I've heard the XM5's aren't able to do as well.

Also if you get a USB bluetooth adapter for your computer it pairs quite nicely with a desktop. Transitioning the headset from being paired with your phone to the desktop and back is super seamless. Well worth your buy.

  • I bought some XM3s about 4 years ago - and they still hold up great, the investment was worth it. Just curious how these are better. Battery life ? Sound quality ?

    • Yes. Those are quite old now but if they are working then maybe you don't need to upgrade. Could always try some on at JB hi-fi.

Everyone bangs on about the XM5 not folding up as small but the cups turn and they sit flat - the case is a different shape but not really much bigger. The xm5 sounds a bit more natural, I'd say more comfortable (less pressure sitting on top of head), better microphones for calls. The XM4 were already great so only about 15% better.

  • got some xm5 after my xm4 finally broke. much preferred the xm4

    • I'm sure someone would swap you :P.
Sounds like people just like throwing them around loose in their bag and don't even use the case.

  • I got these for $300 back in 2021 and sold for a profit.

I do feel somewhat guilty charging more, but had to somehow justify pulling the trigger on the jb xm5 price error 🫣

The only really noticeable improvement in the 5's was the lack of popping while noise cancelling in cars and busses.. I guess there's a reason I see so many 5's selling second hand for the same prices as 4, and I can only assume it's for aesthetic reasons.

    • Same, cheap upgrade :)

    • PS. I'm not usually a fan of playing around with EQ by nature but have been using these settings for the XM5 and they sound a lot better. Worth a go if anyone is interested, can save under a custom preset.

$373.15 on their eBay store with ebay plus code SEPT15.

    • Still too much I paid 415$ for the new ones from Goodguys, just have to call and ask. At the time JB wouldn't budge at all from RRP, but claimed when they had that pricing error of 350$. Guess it's ok if you desperately need some.

    • Or about $375 using an Officeworks "price beat", with free delivery.
