I used to love this PB, but I find it to be getting dried out very quick as of late.

    • +33

Have to stir it up very well on the day you open, so you don't "use up" more oils at the start and there's none left at the end. Really dig it up (dry stuff) from the bottom and mix it well.
And every now and then you might need to do it again.

      • +45

I stock up when half price and store my jars upside down in the cupboard. The oil floats to what was the bottom of the jar / the new top. Means you don't have dry PB at the bottom of the jar when you come to use it. Unopened jars never leaks by the way.

        • +1

I tested this now and I'm switching to this strategy as well 😅

        • Tried that with Tahini but didn't work.

      • +2

I do exactly this when I first open and always thought I was overdoing it with the stirring but good to know it works.

      • Storing it upside down in the pantry makes distributing the oil much easier.

Good but pics is better and so is bega simply nuts

    • +10

I place Pic's only very slightly above Mayvers, with the exception of mayvers dark roast which is the pinnacle of mass produced peanut butter. I find bega much too oily and runny.

      • +1

Agree with the comment.about Bega. Barely stays on the toast because it's so thin, doesn't seem to matter how much you stir it. Tastes good, but not the right consistency for peanut butter.

        • Bega is so thin they have managed to put it in a squeeze bottle. Which actually works pretty well!

      • +1

That Dark Roast is making me fat(ter). It's sooo good. Try making a satay sauce with it.

        • I can believe that, I wouldn't have it too often..
A gram of fat has 9 calories, carbs has 4 calories yet everyone is carb phobic.

          • @G-rig: I go through a jar of the dark-roasted smooth every 2-3 days (just me) and I'm sure there are others who have even more than that. It makes my protein smoothies with frozen bananas the absolute best.

          • @G-rig: Carbs are much easier to binge than fat. You hit satiety much quicker with fats. Most can easily eat 300-400 grams of cooked pasta for 1200 to 1600 calories. Most people can't eat 130 to 160 grams of peanut butter in one sitting.

            • @brandt: A lot of its mental if you are sitting around bored on the couch. Crisps are mostly the fat oil and salt that's addictive and can't control portion control.

Fat people shouldn't be buying dense things like peanut butter and cheese..

All the Atkins crew are just calorie restricting in general. Drink more water and stop eating before full, have to allow 15 min after eating to know you're full.

    • I like Fix & Fogg too.

    • +1

My favourite is fix and fogg along with ABC. No longer a fan of Mayver’s.

  • +2

Tried one of these again lately after noticing the "100% Australian" on some of them.

I don't feel like they're quite as good as before but they aren't as bad as when they were sourcing nuts overseas.

    • +3

If you're after 100% Aussie, I love the Ridiculously Delicious brand. I exclusively use their chunky one after I discovered them :)

      • +1 to the Ridiculously Delicious chunky PB. They are one of the best tasting PB but I never find them in any supermarkets around Sydney!

        • +1

The IGA at Wynyard station has it (under George Street)

      • These are so good but expensive. I suppose you get what you pay for!

  • oo just in time to satisfy my peanut butter cravings

  • +3

Time to stock up on the Dark Roast!
On a side note, the new Pic’s ‘Smoochy’ version has the best consistency and doesn’t dry out as quickly.

  • +11

OMG, thank goodness for this! Onto my second last jar now, cutting it pretty fine..

    • +7

My brother in Christ, I am down to my last few teaspoons of my last jar. This couldn't be more timely.

    • My brother in FSM.
I'm also into my last jar. Perfect timing.

    • That amount would not last my family until Wednesday

    • +1

Haha, glad to see a few of us on the same boat..:) imagine having to pay full price for a jar, that would be sacrilegious…

    • Yes it's been a long while since Mayvers was half price.

    • I'm like Barney Gumble with peanut butter.
"After this jar and the next jar, there's only one more jar left!"

      • Burp, Hey Homer!

  • Time for another 18 jars 👍🏻

    • +1

Only 18? 😇 pfft, I get 30+ across multiple supermarkets

      • Oh wow - ”We’re all walking, and you’re flying, mister”.

    • Only took 12 jars yesterday, but as I was doing so, I overheard a little boy (must’ve been 3 or so) in a nearby trolley telling his mum, “He’s taking everything!” 😅 Had to re-assure him that I’m leaving some for others…

      • Panic shopping or an ozbargainer.
I'll probably get two max they don't keep that well.
Still got an unopened Pics, don't know if that crap any good but Mayvers hasn't been half price for what seems like over 6 Months

  • +2

What happened to cacao super spread? It’s normally a little more expensive and a smaller jar - but it seems to have been replaced with chocolate peanut butter…

    • this was my go-to. can't find it either ):

  • Still gone up 15% from the "good old days"

    • Dont you have 20 cents?

  • +1

Mayver's used to be good but now i find Bega natural PB is better.

    • +1

Yeah nah, the only ingredients should be peanuts and sea salt.

      • +1

How fresh are the peanuts matter. I had Mayver bottles that tasted the PB were made with stale peanuts. Bega on the other hand always smell and tasted fresher.

        • Unlucky.
          Maybe check the used by.

          • @G-rig: Not unlucky, had the same experience for a few times in the last 1 year which leads me to conclude a change in quality or probably cost cutting measure.

            • @KaTst3R: Could be, Plenty of different types with different textures.

      • The Beqa Simply Nuts (Glass jars) are just that.

I find they're a good benchmark and taste better then Mayvers currently too.

The old Mayver's dark roast with aussie nuts use to be my fave, but after changing suppliers to overseas it picked up a nasty after taste.
I'm willing to try their range again as they slowly swap back to aussie nuts but the one I've tried so far hasn't impressed.
At half price I can't complain though..

  • Whats everyone's favourite? First timer, looking to get a few jars!
