  • Great price, I've been holding out for the 1.5TB to drop, but more than happy with this!

  • +11

remember ladies and gentlemen… you cannot take their hard drive out of it's case and use it. As the usb connectors are soldiered on. Which also makes this bad if your careless with your items and your likely to destroy the cable connection. You could render it useless that way.

    • +2

do you know if the hitachi touro or seagate drives are soldered in place? I have an old wd passport drive that works well, but i'm thinking of steering clear of them if they cant be removed from the casing.

It is time to visit OW

    • +3

      They won't price match Amazon.

      • +1

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

Their price match policy does say they will match online stores though (with delivery price included of course), and doesn't say anything about the stores needing to be local.

        • +5

Warranties won't be the same therefore OW don't have to price match already.

        • +1

They don't have to, no. However, since their policy doesn't specifically exclude it, some staff members will price match overseas sites anyway.

On the other hand, I've had trouble getting some staff members to price match MSY in the past (which has a store not far from my local OfficeWorks), so it really depends on who you're dealing with.

        • +4

Ask Gerry Harvey to price match.

Australia has pretty awesome consumer laws though to do with warranties and such - in effect, you can argue quite easily that the warranties are in fact the same if they kick up a fuss.

(it's this whole fucked up thing about how what the companies call their warranty is actually not a warranty in accordance to Australian law).

An example would be - you buy the new iPhone which comes with a 1 year warranty. Most other deals come with a 2-year warranty. For that very fact, if your iPhone breaks after 1.5 years due to a manufacturer fault, then Australian consumer law demands that the company consider the phone still under warranty and have to repair it.

In this case, Apple, however, are bitches about this, but if you go in armed with the direct quotations from the law, then they will eventually relent.

Here's the Warranty and Refunds guide from the ACCC themselves:
          http://www.accc.gov.au/content/item.phtml?itemId=322947&node… [PDF]

          An excerpt:
"How long do consumers’ statutory rights apply?
Statutory rights are not limited to a set time period. Instead, they apply for the amount of time that is reasonable to expect, given the cost and quality of the item.
This means a consumer may be entitled to a remedy under their statutory rights after any manufacturer’s voluntary or extended warranty has expired.
For example, it is reasonable to expect that an expensive television should not develop a serious fault after 13 months of normal use. In this case, the consumer could argue the item was not of merchantable quality and ask for it to be repaired, even if the manufacturer’s voluntary warranty had expired."

However, in this example, there is nothing to force the company to sell you the product at the same price as found here - but I would be surprised if they didn't do it as a gesture of goodwill anyway.

      • I was told by this staff at OW if you find it on Internet and it is in stock we will price match even if it is on eBay from another country. I think it is worth a try though.

        • Do you need to buy this HD? Is yes, can you go to your OW and upload the receipt?

        • Sure. FYI if I successfully buy and upload the receipt, you have to go to your local OW for price match on the same day. But if course it depends who are you dealing with some will price match a day or two days old receipt.

    • Who's OW, sorry?

      • Office Works bud.

  • Great deal for AUD 158.69

  • Is it a single 2TB internal drive or a pair of 1TB?

    • I doubt it would be a pair.

    • Very much doubt it would be a pair, otherwise it would struggle to work on many PCs as it would then need double the power requirement on the USB interface.

    • It's a single 2TB drive.

  • if someone does get OW to price match can you post up a recipt
also same issue as gilbrac, office works and msy were fairly local and OW wouldn't pricematch

  • +2

In case anyone is getting one of these to plug into their PS3, they need to be reformatted from NTFS to FAT32.

  • +1

any problem to buy HDD overseas??? considering :
    1) does it have international warranty?
    2) will the delivery guy (both US and AUS) take a good care with the parcel? will they throw in and here and effect the hdd disc with the unexpected careless action?

    • +1

I got one of these from Amazon a few months ago. Delivered in good shape and haven't had any issues with it. A few years ago i ordered a couple of 1TB WD Passport external drives. Both still going strong, no issues at all.
I'd get one of these if they had them in one of the other colours. Got way too many black external drives.

As for the warranty, i doubt its an international warranty. I guess its one of those risks one has to take.

      • was your hdd bubble wrapped or padded in some way?

        • -1

From memory, i think there was some protection, but can't remember exaclty whether it was bubble wrap or something else. Either way, it was delivered in its own box and that box was in another box.

        • They come in retail boxes. There's filler in the box it's shipped.

        • cuz if it comes bubble wrapped or padded it is generally fine. HDD can survive some serious G's if its not spinning. When the drive is active… not so much.

        • They put it on top of a cardboard base, and then shrink wrapped it to the base. The plastic prevents the HDD from moving, but there is no padding. However, there is some plastic enclosure inside the retail packaging that provides a gap between the HDD and the sides of the box.

          It should be safe.

Trying to get OW to pricematch this, will be back in half an hour

I can tell you the outcome right now if you like.

      • what is/will be the outcome?

        • +2

They will be a bunch of cows. Even with valid price matches they come up with so many excuses. stay away from Five dock OW if you want to price match.

      • +5

What will be the outcome?? Anyway got this from ow for 150. Will be home shortly to give a full debrief

        • Pic or it isn't true! :) (and so I can print it and toss it at the OW here :)

Went in with a printout of the amazon checkout. The guy at the counter started arguing that they don't price match amazon bla bla because they don't send tech to Australia. I told him that they do and I actually managed to place an order for this particular product (which I did but cancelled). He went away for 5 minutes, came back and pricematched.

This was at Marion store in SA.

          Cheers for the deal.

        • will office works price match the receipt even for a different state?

        • You got lucky in that you got someone sans clue, I think (or I just got conned).

Official policy is that they WILL match an international shop as long as:

          a. shipping is added
          b. it has a warranty that receives coverage in Australia.

        • thanks also wondering bout the different states, will have to try it out later today
also there seems to be a big difference in price variation between states
in your receipt it says you save round $7 which is still a great price
so SA price is around 165~ (apparently instore)
NSW same one WDBY2000BK $255 (on the OW website)
          just an observation

        • to aznp2pro4u You're interpreting it wrong. SA price is $255 and I've price matched to 158.69 - 5% which is 150. The 5% price guarantee is what you're seeing as $7.00 savings

        • to the discombobul… Yep, I understand this.. but you can definitely give it a try anyway with the receipt.

I did try a couple weeks ago with the dicksmith misprice which didn't work =[ At least this price is still pretty good.

edit this reply thing's not being friendly to me =[

        • o ok yeh just didnt see anywhere on the receipt the $255 price
          i interpreted wrong
          thanks for clearing it up

        • Yeah. Can definitely try your luck. Just saying that when I did I got a big fat splat (and why). :/

        • +1

Thanks for uploading the OW receipt. Can I please get those 2 idiots to unneg my comment?

        • Probably not but I've +ed it if it makes you feel any better. :)

        • +1

LOL that is very kind of you.

Another receipt for the Brisbane folk and only the amazon price matched (not including shipping) $145.34AUD
          http://i.imgur.com/ADb4v.jpg

but was told that I can't use receipts to pricematch (tried with Cubey first up).. or maybe it is just the milton store brisbane.

          Thanks op for post!
          Chongy288

        • that guy is a cockh*#d !. when dse had it for $149.99,
OW Marion store in SA said its not on their website so no go. even showed the OP photo of the receipt…!.
got 1 for $150.76 @ Noarlunga OW in SA. they had 1 in stock, but couldn't find it…!. but they took an order for 1 from another store. just needed to pay first. will upload receipt if needed.

    • What is "OW"?

      • +2

        OW = Office Works

      • +1

        or .. Oh! What a feeling :)

  • Well it's a good deal!

  • +1

Is this the same one at Officeworks? http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dat…

Did anyone get a successful price match?

    • -7

You are kidding right? Asking an Aussie retail shop to price match with an American retail giant seems to be mission impossible.

      • +9

Looks like Cubey should be the new Ethan Hunt then…

      • I just saw that Cubey, (A few posts up) managed to get it price matched and beaten from his/her local officeworks. So it must not be too hard. I might give it a go.

  • Confused. Link says it is shipped to an US address.
How do you get it to ship Aus for free?

    • +1

      You don't. That's why it's $161 shipped to Australia and not $152.99.

  • awesome - ordered two.

  • Do OW price match receipts interstate? If I just showed them a pic on my phone?

  • +4

Price matched at OW to 150.75. I swear retail in this dump of a country will die out in 5yrs at this rate.

      • +2

please read above, someone has already provided a copy of this

  • Anyone have a upload of OW receipt from Brisbane?

    Thanks :)

    • I second this!

      • +1

I'm here to help! just got one from milton, in the process on scanning receipt.

        • You're awesome!

        • let me know how you go, i'm interested to see if they reject your receipt.

    • +4

Ok Brisbane ppl, here is a scan of my buy at milton. the receipt has it for $145.34AU
      http://i.imgur.com/ADb4v.jpg
but i don't know if a simple show of the receipt is good enough.. when i tried with the SA receipt first up they said they wouldn't price match that because if could be fraud (which could be fair enough because i could easily make this all up on photoshop..) but they did however price match the amazon USD price, not including shipping!

if office works won't do it worth shopping around at jb hifi or DS to see if their willing to match the receipt price.

hopefully the Brisbane ppl can meet up at the organised Ozbargain meet up so we can do some more dealing with each other more freely (i.e. pair/group shipping from the states/overseas, exchange of local receipts, maybe even a alternate shipping address if that is a problem, ect.)

      Thanks Op for the post.

Just got one from Buranda (Ipswich Rd near the PA Hospital).

They had one on the shelf (badly damaged package).

I took it to the counter, said I wanted a price match.

Showed the receipt Chongy288 posted on my phone.

The said that it was fine because it was the same day so no questions were asked.

I asked for a better packaged one and they had a heap in the steel cabinets behind the counter and grabbed me one.

        Thanks OP and thanks Chongy288.

        • now i feel like a fool for ordering online

  • Hmm, might call up my local and see if they'll match a receipt from this morning.

  • Does any one think that OW will just drop the price to avoid price matching?

    • They only do this when rival stores like Dicksmith or HN have the cheaper product

  • thanks so much Akula,

I have been going to the amazon site quite often hoping to see a price drop and had actually given up hope but this price is what I was looking for. Just bought two of them.

  • Thank you so much for uploading the receipts.

  • +2

I think the take away from this is that if OW can price match this down from $255 to $145 without losing money they are already placing an obscene markup on these to start with, thank OzBargain for keeping them honest, keep up the good work people!

  • +1

OW price guarantee should work. The only thing they could possibly get you on is if there is a Warranty issue buying from Amazon.
    http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/content/Lowest-price-gu…

The Amazon product is a 2-year limited warranty
The one at OW is a 3 year warranty.

Perhaps I shouldn't have pointed that out?

  • +3

Got one at OW East Perth, they factored in postage but the girl didn't bat an eyelid $150.10

    • Hi rmk, do you remember the girls name? I might head to East Perth now.
Did you just take a print out with u?

      • it was the girl with long dark hair or burgundy colour hair that was standing near the door, I am on mobile otherwise I'd try and put a copy of the receipt up. I did a dummy order on amazon and printed that off, I also had copies of the people's receipt from here but she didn't even look at those.

        • thanks.

  • Tried 2 stores in NSW. Both rejected. One said they don't pricematch with Amazon, the other rejected based on it being a different part number (but was willing to price match with Amazon). That's with the receipts that were posted online.

Anybody having luck with any other OW stores in NSW? Which one? Would really like one of these… !

    • +1

      which NSW stores?

      • Both CBD stores in Sydney

        • I tried after 5PM. Someone came over and said that they'd had >10 people looking to pricematch - and that head office had e-mailed about NOT matching, based on the Amazon version having a North America part number suffix and the local one having the Asia-Pacific suffix. :(

Don't bother with Clarence St Sydney - or post a reply if you DID get one matched there!

        • +1

So OW watching OzB threads? ;)

  • OW North Sydney refused to price match it. They won't price match amazon, only .com.au sites.

  • +1

Makes you wonder if OW sell any at $255?

  • Does Amazon have their own currency conversion rate?

  • +2

    Here, price matched NSW:

If you local OW doesn't price match scream bloody murder.

Any chance you can scan a better copy? Maybe take a photo with your phone and upload? I might try the store in Alexandria as per your receipt.

      • The receipt is pretty crap. That is scanned at 600 DPI, click the link, click again to zoom in and you can make out the details. Alexandria is fresh out though, I bought the last one.

        • Thanks. Just printed and yes you can see the store name. Since you just bought the last one, you just saved me a trip to Alexandria. Might try other stores in that case.

  • Crikey, Amazon say they have shipped mine already.

  • OW Subiaco WA wouldn't do it. Argued it is not an OZ online store. Noted down his name and his supervisor name in case I need to complain so the management can either give those refused to price match sht or give those who price match this deal sht. Good luck to all OW store staff for applying their own inconsistency price match policies/excuses.

  • +1

Was able to get it down to $143.26 AUD in Victoria. Some tips/issues I encountered in dealing with them.

They will say that OW only match to Australian Stores/business:
There is nowhere on the website that states that it has to be an Australian company. Get them to look under their "Lowest Price Guarantee" section "What about online stores?" and show you where does it say it has to be Australian.

Warranty: WD is covered globally so where you buy shouldn't matter.
