and sits at "fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes with a 99% Audience score from 10K+ verified ratings

And yet this raises zero tingling of your spidey critical thinking skills?

      • +9

Yeah once I saw groomer I knew we didn't have a genius here.

      • +2

No comment on the 60% fresh critics rating?

        • +1

That’s the Hollywood liberal elite who are part of the trafficking. Don’t you know anything?

    • +23

Ah yes, the 'you're a groomer' remark. Glad to see you can use parroted buzzwords.

The fact it has 99% audience score on RT should make any sane person question its validity, and that goes for any piece of media. No real people agree 80% of the time, let alone 99% of the time.

Child trafficking is terrible and sickening. Don't need a film to tell me that or open my eyes to it.

I'll absolutely watch it with an open mind once it hits the internet, but you couldn't pay me to go and sit in a cinema and watch this with the crowd that's thrown its weight behind it. I don't care if the film is even good or bad, but the 'ground support' this film is getting from average Joes is suss as hell and is embarrassing.

You can want to end child trafficking without seeing or supporting this film. That idea is seemingly lost on people, though.

    • +1

Yeah I’m the same - the movie sounds like something I’d enjoy, but I refuse to support the way this has been marketed and supported.

  • +3

Yeah, Ballard is not only a fraud but a very sketchy guy.

Listen to this if you want to find out why or check out Merlan and Marchman on Vice.

Can we stop importing this QAnon Seppo crap to Australia please?

  • -1

Lol at all the lefties outing themselves by being butthurt about a movie based on stopping "child trafficking". Grubs.

    • +14

They sell the 'saved' children to Mormon families. They steal the kids. The kids aren't sex workers, Ballard and his mates pay for them to be kidnapped and then sell them to Mormons.

You're the grub supporting child trafficking because you're too lazy to look into things before opening your mouth.

      Grub indeed.

      • +3

That’s quite an allegation, is there proof of that?

        • +3

Tons. I hope you have a few hours spare though.

I did a podcast on it, but obviously that means you have to take my word for it.

But I got a lot of the reportage from
          https://www.vice.com/en/contributor/anna-merlan

          and

          https://americancrimejournal.com/category/investigates/opera…

The fact that they don't try and re-home the rescued kids is a complex one which I actually (bizarrely) dug up from a conspiracy website - Ballard was on video saying they assume the families do not want them and do not attempt to reunite them. While in some circumstances the family is in on it, not trying to reunite them and send them off to Utah to become Mormons is a big part of his 'mission work' to convert the world to LDS/Mormonism.

It's a big rabbit hole though. I've spent days on this and barely scratched the surface - the authors and journos around this have been doing it for years.

          • +1

@krunchymoses: Thanks mate, very interesting I'll look into all of that.
Would the alternative, rather than sending the kids to Utah, to hand them over to the authorities be the right way in keeping the Children/ Women safe if the families don't want them back or hard to reach?

What is the podcast that you made? Do you cover human trafficking in general as well?

            • +9

@TheEnvelope: Nah, we are a conspiracy theory debunking/mocking podcast. I used to be well into CTs and then realised they are full of it. But also quite funny.

If the families don't want them or are difficult to reach then you have a problem. And that problem needs a plan - it's all under the umbrella of 'aftercare'. Ballard does this to make content and get donations. He films the 'raids' and posts it alongside calls for money. The aftercare is an afterthought. Most orgs spend most of their money on aftercare. OUR spend it on salaries for Tim, his mates and his family. It's a big old grift.

Some families are def problematic. But in this instance it is alleged that the raids are in random areas where they will flash cash to impoverished people and demand children. Reports are that they would come back with young sex workers but they would demand them to be younger and younger until they were satisfied with their age. This has resulted in the theory that instead of rescuing children, they paid for them to be kidnapped. They created the demand. In doing this, they would then dump the kids with the local cops and fly out. No money, no help. Local services often just let the kids go on their own - possibly miles away from home - as they didn't have a plan for them. Eventually Ballard started a plan to send them to Utah as they would increase their profits by selling the kids to giant Mormon families who believe they are saving a soul by buying the kid. Gee, never imagine that could result in abuse though huh? /s

              • +2

@krunchymoses: Also for the record OUR and Tim have parted ways for various reasons including him being allegedly handsy with the help. There is a lot of dirt here and I think OUR might be trying to pivot away from Rambo style rescues and more toward being a legit org. But I wouldn't trust them either way.

                • @krunchymoses: Did you see that leftist woke media organisation called Fox had a dig into OUR and are still trying & getting blocked about criminal investigations into them by the state of Utah

I am donig a part two of my podcast series and man I have no idea how I am going to keep it to another two hours. Maybe it needs part 3. Paul Hutchinson is next - he's a piece of work. Made his money buying up homes and pricing out families and has the balls to say he's out saving kids with the profits. Piss off champ.

Fact: Child Trafficking is messed up. Literally 99.99% of people already know and think this.

Fact: This movie is not a true story. It has been confirmed to be a complete fabrication with the only "based on a true story part" being that child trafficking happens.

Fact: For some reason extreme righties think this movie is the second coming of Christ and will tell you if you don't watch it then you're support child trafficking.

Fact: The same people who are crying on how "woke" movies are now with agendas being shoved down your throat are failing to see the irony in praising this movie.

  • +1

Why so much anger over this? If you are angry over this, don't watch, otherwise you are just sweeping the issue under the carpet and refused child trafficking existed.

This film raises awareness to those who turns a blind eye or simply have no idea on stark reality.

Speech is free. If it is not for you, move along, go support something else you care about.

    • +7

What awareness??!! Have people been living in caves this whole time?

This type of horrid stuff has been happening since time immemorial, where was the outrage from religious conservatives when children were molested or killed in Churches, convents etc?

Why hasn't there been outage in the child smuggling operations in Northern Nigeria and Niger region by these nutters?

Only when their QAnon handlers shake the outrage tree do these people say, 'see whats happening, why isn't anyone talking about it'?

      Edit

Actually I was wrong, they're not cave dwellers, but bubble suit wearers.

      • +9

Imagine if they promoted Spotlight as much as they do Sound of Freedom.

    • +6

The people down voting are the ones who care about prevention and awareness. This movie gets in the way of that - look up Tim Ballard, he's a grifter and has been exposed for lying

  • +11

Fun fact: Ballard uses a law firm famous for not only covering up for child sex offences but also protecting the abuser and continuing the abuse!

    So yeah, not a hero.

  • +1

This would be a bargain if you could get the pay it forward tickets but change movie at the last minute. Then this is a deal. Seeing a movie on a cooker's dime is a good deal.

  • +2

Free movie tickets is a deal, not my cuppa tea but with all the people so butt hurt that it exists I will probably end up watching it at some point.

Seen MEG 2 recently, as we can't currently explore the entire ocean and know less about it than space they could exist , not currently possible so I'll settle at sharks eat people and they exist but the chances of getting eaten by one is pretty low.

    Just a movie guys 🍿.

    • +3

Most people are mad that I am sharing this deal out to the community 😔

      • +4

It's the Internet bro not real life, possibly not even people lol. I gave up posting on Reddit, Facebook and deleted all my accounts too toxic and I'm either arguing with bots or the insane either way it's a waste of time.

      • +1

Yeah don't worry too much, the MSM organisations went after the film in a big way so it's bound to be divisive. Still plenty of people here who are interested and appreciate

  • +2

    Every comment here seems political.

In the movie itself, was there anything that is actually controversial? That’s the main issue.

    • +1

That’s kinda the point - the movie is just a standard action piece that is based on a true story, but its marketing and support has become very political, and has become successful because of that.

      • +3

After reading quite a few articles, and from experts in the field, seems the events depicted are a very minor occurrence of how child trafficking occurs, sensationalized and altered from the writers own mouth. A lot of danger to how this movie can affect real world cases of trafficking in front of a jury.

  • +5

Seeing a lot of neg votes that don't seem to be with voting guidelines.
The deal is not the cheapest available - It is.
Issue with product - I'd argue not enjoying a movie is not a reason to neg. An issue with the product would be if the movie stopped halfway through.
Issue with retailer - Not seeing any comments about any Australian Cinema Chain

    • +4

Lmao some troll negged you for a valid reason but didn't even bother stating his reason

      • +1

        Welcome to the internet

    • +3

Voting guidelines are examples, hence why the issue with product and retailer sections are broad.

What you want is the verbatim reasons to what classifies an inappropriate negative vote.

  • +13

Getting Kony 2012 vibes from this

  • -1

Imagine down voting a movie about exposing peddos. Really says something about themselves

Mainstream media told them not to like it, and they comply. Social enginnering is a cinch these days.

      • +1

Mainstream media told them not to like it, and they comply. Social enginnering is a cinch these days.

Fringe/non MSM told them that mainstream media told them not to like it, and they complied.
Social engineering is a cinch these days.

Ironic claiming social engineering is a 'MSM' thing, considering the crazy number of 10/10 'fan' reviews the movie get, the amount of defense any negative reviews or press gets, and the majority of its funding model is convincing people to give them more $ than just the ticket price (rather than perhaps donating that money to worthwhile causes that may actually make a difference to child trafficking).

  • +9

You mean they are giving young children to the Mormons? The same people who believe in marrying girls off at a young age. There are a number of comments made that the main guy was Brigham Young. The same mob that will cut people cold from their families if they decide to leave the church.

Also, as others have said, if you didn’t know about child trafficking before this you need to get out more. Rather than just watching the movie do some of your own investigations and don’t go down the QAnon rabbit holes. The rightwing are much more likely to be abusing children than the left. Google how orphans were treated in orphanages run by religious orders. It is pretty sickening stuff. People inherently trusted the churches to do the correct thing because they were meant to be the “moral authority”.

    • +2

Do you have factual articles proving that the kids got sold to mormons?

      • I didn’t say sell. Interesting that you went there though.

        • So that's a no then, got it.

Weird you seem so triggered about an alleged conspiracy theory, yet your response is to invent one yourself and then try and spread it ?

    • +2

"The rightwing are much more likely to be abusing children than the left" that's a big allegation and just says to me you are leftwing bias

  • +19

This seems like astroturfing for reactionary dreck more than anything. Not really sure how paying it forward is a deal either.

Aside from the above reasons for negging, there are now several comments insisting that anyone negging this "deal" is sympathising with pedophiles (a ridiculous assertion). Not really sure how this flippant and dishonest attitude is meant to convince people to watch this movie.

    • +2

You don’t have to pay it forward. That’s optional, the deal is the free tickets to watch this movie if you choose too. When you click the deal you scroll down to claim free tickets on the website

      • +3

Well that's something, I suppose. I still take issue with the motives behind the deal.

    • +8

You're absolutely right. The aim here is to fire up the 'oh won't somebody think of the children crowd' to push sales. There's plenty of awareness around the issue and anyone who claims they haven't seen anything is blind. Mind you, the whole being blind thing makes sense, as the same people seem to have missed the whole child abuse in churches.

    • +2

It's not meant to help people watch the movie; it's just concerning that people are negging this movie because it upsets them for some reason…

Yes this movie isn't 100% accurate to the real story, the 2nd half is made up. But the point of the movie is to spread awareness of child trafficking which I don't get why its controversial and people are soo upset about it

  • How do I book online? I've got the voucher code to use starting with VPASSMX (Village Cinema) but it doesn't come with a PIN.

    • I signed up with email and they sent a barcode to my email with the free ticket, don’t sign up with whatsapp

  • +8

I've watched this movie in a theatre with perhaps ~10 other people. It didn't come across as any form of US propaganda, politics, Q-whatever, or far-right conspiracy.

No idea who financed it, but the acting & screenplay were 'ok/agerage'.

Reading through the comments, it seems as if alomst every person who voted -ve hasn't watched it, so their -ve is tainted by their own misconceptions, based on whatever they're read about it online…

    "Propaganda"
"Not a deal when it costs you your brain and critical analysis skills"
"I will give this movie a go, but once it’s available on a streaming service."
"But this is full of politics"
    "Astroturfing your qanon trash"
"Im not supporting this film and it’s creator’s crazy ideologies."
"It's soliciting support for conspiracy theorists and grifters."
    "Not a deal. Q garbage."
"if a movie is the first time you're learning about child trafficking"
"Paying forward is not a bargain"

    • +2

Reading through the comments, it seems as if almost every person who voted -ve hasn't watched it, so their -ve is tainted by their own misconceptions, based on whatever they're read about it online…

      Slam dunk!

    • +4

Negative votes across the website would pretty much be removed if you want to say only those who have the product can do so.

    • Maybe have a look at my posts.

      • Yes, we understand you are a conspiracy nutter.

        • Mate you just posted an article about the wrong journalist - not gonna take you seriously champ.

      • +2

        Its free. bargain !
Who said the movie helps save children? I suppose in a way yeah, They're not on the streets because they're indoors watching this movie.

        • +11

The description of the deal claims that:

"Seeing the film is the first step in spreading awareness about child trafficking."

          edit:

If you want to help save children from sexual abuse in Australia I'd suggest donating to Bravehearts. Even the $20 that the paid movie ticket would cost would help to prevent child abuse and support Australian kids.

      Money laundering, mostly.

    • +5

It's just money. At the end Caviezel basically tells the audience if they want to stop child sex trafficking people need to see the movie - and you can pay a ticket forward on the website. People are gullible and this movie manipulates them emotionally. But it's not as much about an agenda, but to make money.

A reasonable conspiracy theory would be that this movie is being made to distract people from the real CSA - either in the church (the LDS church where Ballard is from is huge here) and also the 'dirty uncle' that is the majority of this kind of abuse. I don't buy into that though. I think it's just that the Harmon brothers behind Angel are very very smart. They also did this with another movie of theirs which was about Abraham and Isaac and it had a huge impact on their box office take.

      Grifters gonna grift.

      • +2

aha so they are "surfing the wave" so to speak. to the bank

  • +1

I've heard it's a pretty boring, generic thriller without any solid plot and lengthy periods of rambling incoherence.

    • +1

Slow at the start, but it's a decent watch if you like to riff with friends over B-action that's unintentionally funny.

  • +2

'Free', also known as 'we bought all the tickets ourselves in order to artificially boost our numbers, and need to give them away because no-one is actually willing to sit through this rubbish.'

  • +4

I don't remember this much controversy when Taken (2008) was released.. or it's subsequent sequels of diminishing quality. That was Hollywood making money off an action film centered around human trafficking of minors. This is a fairly mellow film by comparison based on actual events and real crimes happening around the world on a daily basis. If anything, the raid was toned down because of budget and casting.

Whatever you don't like about the who and why this film exists, you can leave that at the door to learn for yourself what is happening in the real world, how to recognise it and what can be done to try and stop it.

I plan on setting up a screening using my own equipment with a community church group I volunteer with (I'm not a Christian, I just like to help). The studio won't get a dollar, no one will pay the price except for those who have it coming.

    • +4

Taken didn't (well, it kinda did but didn't) purport to be based on a true story. Much more than that, it did not try to be a participatory experience for people looking to become heroes. If you can't see the problem with this film and its impact on people then you haven't looked.

      • +2

The issue seems confused in the comments though. That money is made from this film. Or that it's not 100% a documentary. Or both. I personally hate any true story or biopic that warps and changes facts for entertainment and pacing, which to my understanding was done as minimally as possible in this instance.

Aside from the movement type following associated with it, many have criticised how inadequately the film handles the audience being able to make a difference. Reducing participation down to merely telling people to see it.

I do see the problem. But I also see the benefit.

        • This film is going to spawn a wave of people going into impoverished locations and kicking down doors to save the children. The last thing we need is Bubba and Joe going to South America on vacation to save the world.

But that's what's gonna happena and it's not gonna be good.

          • +2

@krunchymoses: I'd also agree that's not a good thing, but until that happens it's not a reason to bury the film based on hypotheticals. The inadequacy I was referring to, is during the credits with Caviezel, there's the expectation for him to highlight agencies or websites with more information, to better inform the audience - but that doesn't happen.

At best or most at a large scale, all this awareness will mean people understand it's a very real thing that's happening, put a "how to spot trafficking" poster in bathrooms and some save a hotline to their phone. If that leads to investigations and reducing abuse, it worked. This could've all been done with a documentary, but they rarely get worldwide cinema releases and few would be rushing to see real children in these circumstances.

            • @formulated: It's not really a hypothetical though. It's happening. https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/episode-244-florida-fl…

Producer Paul Hutchinson also admitted that this would happen as a result of the film. It's not just going to happen, it's happening.

Caviezel is an actor and did what he was told - to do a sales pitch at the end for Angel. In a perfect world that would be a call for donations to legit orgs but that was never on the cards.

Posters in toilets and hotlines on phones are more likely to result in mexican families being harassed at wal-marts and people calling into trafficking hotlines with bullshit conspiracy theories. It's cynical, but the wayfair conspiracy theory saw this play out and Vice have reported similar bullshit thanks to chuds seeing this movie and getting misplaced justice boners.

The the closest you'll get to the studios donating, is them reimbursing the costs, if a non for profit holds an event at a theatre with their movie, at least 70% fill said event and also sends photos of them with a sign up. So, just getting more tickets sales really.

Big name organisations are the perfect hiding place for trafficking…Clinton Foundation is a perfect example…Same with the Red Cross, these NGO's have proven time and time again that they cannot be trusted to distribute donations to the people who need it, they feather their own nests and do a photoshoot, pump a bunch of Bill Gates experimental vaccines into everyone then tuck and run. NGO's are basically fronts for Intelligence agencies whose primary goals are instigating coup's, assassination, and trafficking drugs people and weapons, so i take their statements of fact with a large dose of skepticism. I cannot judge this movie as i haven't seen it, but clearly it has people talking about the issue on both sides of the fence so it's job is done.

      • The Republican party has members charged with trafficking and associates of traffickers too. Don't forget that big name organisation.
