  • Keen to get a NAS for local media server purposes. Is it possible to download files remotely with an associated phone app?

    • I use a paid app ($15~ once off) called Nzb360 which connects into Sonarr/Radarr if you have those services.

Keep in mind most ISP's use CGNAT which won't allow for Port forwarding as your WAN IP address is shared. You'll have to opt-out of this. Most will do it for free if you reach out to support.

I use NZB360 as well. amazing app. Solved my problem with having a mobile option.

Works with all the usual download and search clients that are typically available for NAS

        https://nzb360.com/

For NAS solution I am currently using openmediavault software with an old HPDiskstation. Have used xpenology which is a version of synology, but found too many issues upgrading etc. Openmediavault now has my loyalty..

Are these any good or should I hold out for sales on Synology

    • Depends on what you want to use it for. The software for Synology is better.

Make your own NAS cloud honestly. It takes quite a bit of fiddling around but after a while you can do it.
There are many ways of DIY method, (depending on various factors like if you need RAID, or often syncing massive files etc.)
if you like synology software then look for getting Xpenology on a CPU, literally ditto copy of Synology software. (just without synology hardware (aka on your own CPU like old laptop or raspberry pi or etc.).

Me personally dont got a lot of need to have RAID or super fast sync speeds for each day doing massive sync's.
So for me Setting up a Private (own) VPN using WireGuard/OpenVpn server (better option if you got Public IP) otherwise Zerotier/Tailscale(free option). and use FTP/SFTP/SMB/WebDAV etc. for syncing outside home is good enough (1 single USB port from/to wifi modem).

Speeds for me are not that much worse than WD Mycloud either (I am saying WD myCloud is crap in other words, so I got low expectations)

        USB port from wifi modem?

    • I haven't seen a good synology sale for at least 2-3 years.

If anything the same range has gone up by about 20%.

      • The ds923+ on Amazon a few months ago?

        • The ds920+ went down to around $620, so for me not that good a price.

          • @garetz: Sorry I meant the ds423+, which was $575 on Amazon

Anyone looking for a NAS for media server like plex and having all *arrs along with cloud storage look at running unraid. Pretty east to install and you can repurpose old hardware. Lots of good youtube videos from spaceinvader one and ibracorp. Setup mine in couple of days and wish had done it sooner. Used my existing hardware.

    • This looks like a good and would fit my need.
      Might do this

      • Have a look at Trash Guides. I followed it and easy to setup. Highly recommended by the community.

  • just curious has anyone got one of these? are they better or worse than a QNAP?

    • +1

Synology and QNAP software is more better with more apps. In terms of hardware and actual functions of a NAS it holds up pretty well.

    • I've got a F2-220 and it's been serving me well for a good few years now. No issues, always worked great. Very happy.
