  • Deals look good. How do you find out which planes are doing this route?

    • You could check flight tracker websites based on the flight number

    • It looks like they're using a Boeing 787-9

      https://www.radarbox.com/data/flights/ANA881/1531139750

    • At least for the sydney one, they are flying Air Japan, a no frills budget ANA off shoot. So yes 787 but different config. How disappointing.

    what about melbourne = =

    • -1

No one wants to fly into the bad weather lol

    • +4

ANA don't fly direct to MEL

      • hummmmm.. make sense

      • -1

they have perth but not MEL? tf

Melbourne-Tokyo obviously would have greater demand compared to Perth-Tokyo but there's already 2 airlines serving the route(Qantas, JAL).

Rather than compete, ANA probably just decided to focus on an unserved market that has enough demand instead.

          • @Mamba Mentality: A bit of a shame, more competition on direct to Japan routes would be welcome. My guess is if Zipair (LCC for JAL) ever decided to open routes to Australia, they'd also just do Sydney (maybe the Western Sydney airport)….potentially Avalon for Melbourne?

            • @Ventak: If Qantas already have the route from Melbourne, wouldn't the government say no to any other airlines who wanted to compete?

              • @bonezAU: Maybe, but that's why I suggested Avalon rather than Tullamarine - Qantas doesn't operate there. I believe it's just Jetstar only right now - AirAsia moved back to Tullamarine.

            • @Ventak: I'd reckon they'd go to Melbourne Airport anyway in that scenario.

Avalon seems to have difficulty attracting airlines. Even the domestic LCCs(Jetstar's operations and routes there are very small for example). It's on the same side of the metropolitan area(relative to Melbourne CBD) as Melbourne Airport so Avalon's location is really only convenient for Geelong.

I agree, the more competition for Melbourne-Tokyo the better. Although personally, I'm hoping that Melbourne gets a direct flight to Seoul. Since that seems like a very noticeable hole in the network out of Melbourne.

Wow didn't know there were direct flights tp Tokyo from Perth, thanks OP

    • +1

It was a very recent thing. We did have it pre COVID.

  • eat natto

  • @IWantThatFlight is the a way to search for one way Tokyo to Perth only? I can't see the option.

  • How's Japan with kids < 3

    • depends on the kids

      ferral? not so good

    • +7

Japan is a very quiet, organised, clean, and tidy place. Even Japanese kids follow suit.

If you have kids that run around, throw food, and wail, you'll stand out a lot in Japan.

    • In terms of safety, activities to take them and food, it’s brilliant. There is a lot of walking involved though, so you have to plan around this. And as others have said, Japan is very quiet, organised and clean. So you’d have to make your kids follow suit.

Just be careful booking on the suggested website to purchase your tickets. For example the $1002 Sydney to Tokyo price is offered by Cheapoflyt, which looks legit, but after a quick google you can see bogus 5 star reviews on Trustpilot (you can tell because every review mentions the 'consultant' by a ridiculous sounding western name, and always their full name (e.g. Scionn White, Sharon Williams, ) and all 1 star reviews on ProductReview.

From reading the ProductReview reviews, Cheapoflyt seems to operate similar to other scam websites I've seen, where you can pay for your flight online but they let you know the payment didn't go through and you need to pay $200-300 more over the phone to secure your booking as the allocation has been exhausted.

    • Always book direct with the airline, use these tools to find the cheap flights/dates then book direct for slightly more money.

      • Flight centre used to price match, but then they stopped that. If there was a big discrepancy with the airline I'd sometimes haggle with fc and they'd occasionally meet half way.

Absolutely never book with these shonky online sites.

      • Yep just did exactly that - booked with ANA for $1101 AUD each. Worth the extra $100 to ensure I'm not getting scammed and not be able to get stitched up by getting ping-ponged between the 3rd party website and airline to resolve any issues.

    • "it has been a great experience working with Scionn White ( travel consultant) with all my bookings so far. Highly recommended. Had no issues so far with bookings or other concerns I had."

"Lovely experience booking through Cheap Flyt with the lovely Sharon Williams who successfully has me flying to see my beautiful daughter in the The UK for Christmas! And with requested Aisle seat allocation, couldn't be happier! Thanks Sharon :)"

Had to check this out myself LOL

      • Lol yeah. It's almost as if online reviews are garbage. Scammers will find a way around everything, airline tickets, review websites, Amazon, and concert tickets lol.

  • Looking for cheap flights to Seoul, Singapore or Hong Kong (prefer from ADL) -Oct/Nov

  • I checked Sydney to Tokyo 1/5 - 15/5 on Google Flights and it is showing JAL even cheaper for the same dates at $978. One advantage of ANA is they have day time return flights though. The overnight flights home are not fun.

    • I actually like the overnight flights. More play time in Japan.

  • last time we went to Kyoto in Feb it froze my R soff - frozen pools of water, snow on the windscreen of the rental car [shudder], so cold we gave up at the freezing cold wind-blown entrance to USJ and sought a warm restaurant instead to get out of the wintry blast - just generally nasty

so unless you're hoping for snow (skiing, etc.) which may or may not eventually after the Japan summer heat wave we experienced (Tokyo ? "too damn hot !!!"), I'd be checking the weather before wanting to commit to another trip there over Nov-Feb

Booked Perth flights yesterday. Was pretty excited to see an even better deal for the same period having missed out last time. Paid $980 return through the website directly.

Ana also have a fare price hold if you need a few more days to think about it! (Since the deal ends tomorrow)
