I have this, if you don't have a soundbar, its 10000% worth it at this price. Mainly because clear dialogue feature is awesome… no more quiet talking and then LOUD action/music scenes.. Bass is also solid given it's size and no sub… 10/10 would recommend!

    • +2

      thanks for the review.

    • Would you use it to play music?

      • +4

yep, the bass is not bad at all and doesn't get muffled at higher volumes

        • +1

          Bought 1. Cheers

    • +3

I have this also and echo all the comments made by mortgagetightass. Great value for money.

      • +9

I'll jump in with a 3rd recommendation, it's awesome for the money.

Just don't teach your 3 year old how to use Alexa, or she will sign you up to Amazon Music through the sound bar and you'll pay $75 for 6 months before realising… ;D

        • +1

I don't believe this version has Alexa built in

    • As someone who has been using my inbuilt tv speakers for years, would you recommend this for gaming? (dont really use my TV for anything else)

      • +3

Yep do it, you won't look back

    • Agree. Bought this when we had a cheap Hisense TV with absolutely awful sound and it made world of difference.

    • Do you know if this is any good for gaming on console?

    • also + 1 on this deal and speaker have one plugged into my pc always quality

      • Do you use it for business apps like teams, zoom etc? If so how does it go?

    • Much appreciated.

    • Can it be mounted on a wall? I just have my Tv on the wall and my sound bar is the off Tv bracket without out a Tv cabinet underneath

  • Does it come with optical port? Cant see it in the product reviews/features

  • +9

This or ‎SR-C20A for $9 extra.
This one has 120w speaker whereas ‎SR-C20A has 150W speaker.

    • I pulled the trigger on the SR-C20A… I hope it’s just as decent.

      • +3

Me too! Having an analogue input with the 2 optical ports, sealed the deal. The fact it's 30cm shorter is a bonus.

Here's the review of the SR-C20A.

        • +6

me three… the black colour sealed the deal as white on black tv wasn't going to be approved by the boss.

    • Jumped on this one too. Thanks for the heads up.
Hopefully it’s a good choice for the secondary TV.

    • +11

You might want to check the spec sheet from other sources as well. From what I found SR-C20A have smaller speaker with max output 100w whereas SR-B20A have bigger speaker with max output 120w. It kinda make sense since B20A is bigger overall. I think the sound quality difference between the 2 are negligible but I'd say B20A should have more power.

      In summary
C20A have AUX input and its smaller
B20A have more power and have 3d surround sound feature(not sure if it works properly for soundbar at this price point)

    • Bit the bullet on the C20A, from a quick few searches it seems to generally be more favored

    • Thanks for the idea and bit the bullet.

Comes in black for the cheap price.

    • +1

Do you have a link for this?

    • Thanks anamui, also ordered a SR-C20A for its more compact size. It only has less powerful 100W speakers though, not 150W like you said.

      • It says "Speaker maximum output power ‎150 Watts" in the description. I have checked other websites and they mention 100W normal output. Not sure about the normal and max bit.

        • Right, if you mean maximum output power, then both SR-B20A and SR-C20A have same 150W in the description. Not 120W in the SR-B20A like you have said.

          • @edfoo: You are right, I missed that bit from the app. Cannot edit my comment anymore.

            • @anamul: That's cool. Thank for posting about the SR-C20A.

        • You have posted incorrect information.

I own the SR-C20A, and it's output power is only 20 watts per channel, plus 30 watts for the sub.

    • link lease as i see it as $90 extra not $9.

      • Black colour only at the cheaper price

  • Yes it does

  • Excellent bang for buck. You won't be disappointed by the lack of a sub. Review here: https://www.whathifi.com/reviews/yamaha-sr-b20

    • +1

Good to know! I just bought this with a view to put in into the living room. So we dont want to setup a full sub etc there. Its just for occasional TV and playing music from bluetooth devices.

  • +1

How many video streaming platforms use DTS:X? Serious question.

    • Outside of DVDs not as many as they should tbh, dolby is dominating unfortunately. I have yas-109 and it has dolby digital (not atmos) so that's a bit more useful in my case.

  • looks very similar to my yas108b
    worth upgrading?

    • Thinking same, I have yas-107b, looking to give to in-laws and buying this newer model for me, specs all seem similar just a few new compatible sound codecs…

Seems the "YAS" series are now discontinued? (Last being 109)

I'm assuming these are the model that replaces it, with 'c' being the compact version?

      • I have a similar soundbar with a Yamaha subwoofer attached and I would say no regardless of application.

Want clearer speech? Consider a mid to high range soundbar with channel i.e. 3.1 channels or more with enhancements ($400 and above). I also have a soundbar which has a discrete centre channel and also preset software enhancements that can be adjusted in four different levels (low, medium, high and night mode) for clearer speech and the vocal boost is more subtle without detracting from the rest of the frequency range too much.

Want clearer music? Consider a well rated bookshelf speaker system for the sound stage.

If you are in Sydney, I would recommend the Life Style Store at Northmead or similar as a starting point.

A visit to a dedicated store with proper setups can be an ear opener to the nuances of lower bass frequencies and crossover, less bright setups, punchy midranges, etc that your basic soundbar can only give you a glimpse of. It will also give you a feel for how large or small you need to go for the specific room and intended purpose. Some stores will be more than happy to audition different speaker systems for you.

        • +2

This is not a bad idea but most older people won't be able to tell the difference. Especially as hearing gets worse. Cheap speakers FTW.

  • Would appreciate if someone who knows could explain if the sound on this could be controlled by Apple TV remote rather than the Yamaha remote.
I have the latest version Apple TV and a sony tv with an Arc hdmi port.
My current sound bar is connected via optical to the tv so I have to use a separate remote for volume
    Thanks

    • I'm pretty sure you can configure the apple tv remote to control your yamaha setup. I think it has a 'learning' mode so that the volume buttons control the receiver instead of the tv through arc

    • +1

If you're current soundbar and tv have HDMI eArc ports you then connect this to your tv using 1 HDMI cable only (assuming your sound bar is Arc compatible also?)

The ports on both the tv and the bar would show "Arc"… once you have that connected, enabled it in the tv settings to turn on "arc" and then all your sound is automatically diverted through the bar, 100% controlled via the tv remote.

Assuming you're Apple remote is programmed to already control the Sony volume (I have chrome cast) then yes, the remote will in turn also control the sound bar volume (the sound bar and the tv act as one unit - turns on and off with tv also automatically - enable 'cec' also)

    • It’s controlled via eARC. I have a Yamaha soundbar with Apple TV. No issues. Apple TV remote does everything. I only use the tv remote for installing updates on the tv! Sound bar turns on and off with the tv automatically, and volume is adjusted using the Apple tv remote.

    • My older tv has only one hdmi which I already use for Apple TV. Does anyone know how to connect sound bar in this setup? Maybe via Apple TV’s Bluetooth?

      • +1

The optical port on your Apple TV should work right?

      • the soundbar need not be connected via HDMI, it can also be connected ONLY via the optical cable (reference manual or man page)

        • Super helpful, thanks guys! Unfortunately latest Apple TV no longer has optical connectivity so I will get hdmi to hdmi+optical splitter
          https://amzn.asia/d/0pMcshh

Probably remote won’t work, will see

    • yes it can

  • Bought one! Thanks 🥰

  • Great deal, thanks OP
The olds were just complaining they couldn’t hear dialogue from their tv speakers, this should fix that nicely

    • +4

      Eh!?

      • Didn’t know my olds were on ozBargain!

        • What age is olds these days? is 40 the new 20?

          • @Skullytor: when it comes to hearing I think 20 is the new 40

  • Is this an improvement on the A80J speakers? Noting the sound is rated quite well on the Sony TVs

    • +1

A soundbar is always going to be better than a TV's inbuilt speakers.

  • just purchased, thanks OP. Won't know myself with subtitles turned off.

  • -1

Thanks OP, bought for pressie, did click through shopback hopefully tracked for 20% cashback. https://www.shopback.com.au/amazon-australia

    • +3

Electronics (Includes Bluetooth Speakers, Headphones, Speakers) 0.00%

      • Anyone have any luck finding cashback to stack with this? Best I could find is 1.75% cashback on Amazon giftcards via Shopback

      • Dunno that, oh well good price anyway..

  • would be too overpower for work from home office room? ie. with 34" monitors and playing youtube/music while working

    • Went with the SR-C20A for exactly that.

  • -1

If it is Yamaha it is Yamaha. Buy Yamaha without waste of time to compare to others.

  • this one or bose ?

    • +1

      Which Bose for 169?

      • +1

Under $100 actually during the Bose Amazon midnight sale.

  • Thanks, bought the SR-C20A

  • Can you pair Echo Dot to this and play music via Alexa (using voice)? I know I can pair my phone to echo dot to use as bluetooth speaker but don’t know if Echo Dot can control bluetooth speakers

  • +1

Link for the SR-C20A at $9 extra cause i see it as $90 more, thanks

  • +1

Is there a subwoofer out for external sub?

  • Noob question.
besides the brand, how does this compare to "Kogan 2.1 Channel 180W Dolby Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer" ? $144
    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-21-channel-180w-dolby-sou…

  • I get the impression that this is a sidegrade to the usual Polk Magnify deals posted on here.

Yamaha probably better for dialogue, but Magnify perhaps better for music and movies, albeit less feature rich.

  • Another newbie question - currently got a PC connected to my TV. Do I just run another HDMI cable from the TV to this to get it running?

    • +1

If your TV has a ARC HDMI port you plug this into that.
