      • Did you try to cancel on chat or phone?

      • No go for me on chat trying to do that. They wanted to move me a discounted $59 plan ($49 for 12 months) but cancel the current contract with the $828 charge still lol……

I tried to get the extra $10 discount for 12 months and was a no go as well. Was worth a shot

  • +1

For those that already cancelled and haven't received their P8P. Would anyone know if HN have the power to refuse to give out the phones knowing the Optus plan is already cancelled?

    • +2

I highly doubt it. You paid for a free phone, you paid the fee alongside it. They cannot keep from you what you 'paid' for

    • +1

Fear not, HN can't and won't refuse you your phone.

  • +2

Was gonna go in on the 16th, but after hearing the rumours of the deal shutting down early I got down ASAP. Very glad I did. Thanks very much OP for sharing this one!

  • Would like to know if anyone successfully port out your service and effectively paid the termination fee and got out that way rather than asking Optus support to cancel, keeping your phone

    • +4

Yes, you can do that - it will auto cancel then you just need to wait for the final bill to arrive.

This has been covered multiple times in the comments.

      • +1

Ok cool that's probably better than dealing with Optus support. However I found out something strange you don't actually put in payment details until later, in the app. I wonder if they will charge your credit card on file or send you a separate bill

    • +1

3 days now and I still haven't got the final bill.

    • the gift card plan is how its invoiced for optus’ end, all is well

  • +3

I was told Optus are clawing back $500 from HN for each cancellation which is why HN are pulling this deal early (ie. they lose $500 from each contract that gets cancelled early).

I went in hoping to get 2 new contracts but the staff told me his boss had already stopped the deal that afternoon after supposedly getting notification from head office about the Optus memo.

Seems like every HN is telling a different story as to the reason for pulling this earlier

    • +1

How is optis clawing back $500?

  • So is this deal officially dead then? I was going to sort it out this weekend. :( my nearest HN is like an hour away, so not keen to find out on arrival.

    • +2

Seems so but you could always call up the store in advance instead of heading there to ask in person

      • Novel idea :)

  • Just rang a store and was told it ended early and the bloke didn't know why.

  • +6

I bet you next year pixel 9 deal won't be as generous as this year. They will look into this loophole.

    • +7

Well that's nothing to worry about for another 7 years

Inflation mate. That's no way I would pay $1799 outright for this mid range hardware and solely selling on software

It's not worth it neither I think any flagship should be sold more than 1.2k

    • I don't think there was a similar deal for other Pixels. This could be a one-off.

      • +4

The Pixel 7 Pro ran a similar deal. Unsure about the 6.

        • +1

          I didn't know that. Probably because I wasn't interested in getting the 7 😁

      • +1

I think there might have been one for the 7pro. Probably still listed here under expired.

They even had one with a free 6a at some point when getting a 7

      • there was a better deal last year you got a pixel 7 pro and a $150 harvey norman giftcard.

        • pixel 7 pro was $400 cheaper

    • -4

Yeah all these cancellers ruined it for the rest of us!

Hopefully they offer the same deal next time but make the cancellation payout $1656 :)

      • +9

Yeah all these cancellers ruined it for the rest of us!

It is clearly an oversight by optus/HN, don't know why you'll blame the cancellers. People who cancelled paid out the fee on contract. Blame optus for setting the cancellation fee so cheap.

        • +1

I would think that but they did it last year, I can't imagine they only just realised.

          • +4

@denserham: They didn't care last year cos Pixel 7 Pro RRP was $1,299, most places had it on sale for around ~$1000-$1100 at the time, so the loss isn't great or as noticeable when people cancelled ($828) vs those who stayed on.

This time Pixel 8 Pro RRP has increased to $1,699 and has made more than a blip on their radar.

          • +7

@denserham: One of my best mates works for Optus corporate. Last year a slim minority cancelled, and they were happy taking the loss (there is actually a loss to Optus more so than HN on this) as there wasn't anywhere near the amount of people doing it as it wasn't as widely known, and they gained many other customers who took the 'real' 24 month deal.

This year is a completely different ballgame and cancellations are so high that Optus is in panic mode internally over it, and are blaming HN, initially because they thought HN employes were 'training' customers to cancel for the min ETC, but that's not the truth. Optus were only aware of OzBargain and Whirlpool talking about it long after the first batch customers were cancelling.

It got so bad that they thought there was a problem with their network, apparently (because of so many early term cancellations which usually indicates something is wrong, and automatically informs a real manager to look into it).

I've heard murmurs Optus are trying to claw back a considerable fee ($500 apparently) from HN per cancelled contract.

            • @BradH13: If you skin over the comments here many people did mention being coached by Harvey Norman. There’s a couple comments where they got suggested that if they cancel it immediately they get the discounted phone.

        • -1

I agree, someone at Optus dropped the ball on this. Cancellation fee should have just been paying out the contract, which nobody in their right mind would do :)

      • +1

Yeah all these cancellers ruined it for the rest of us!

        How did they ruin anything?

        Harvey's budget? Oh no!

  • +1

For those of you who are waiting for the phone to arrive and got the $69 issued invoice.

Can we just ignore it until I collected the phone then port out to pay the total including the termination fee?

I don't think I should pay this bill it's not due yet and I don't have the phone yet to cancel comfortably

    • I think someone here said they asked for it to be waived

      • If you request to cancel prior your phone arrival, I think you can waive but not when you are waiting for the phone, and holding onto the plan until you cancel or port out. I believe you need to pay as per above but with reduced amount.

The gamble here is whether they deliver the phone in 3 weeks if not expect to pay this $69 bill. You could argue the phone has not arrived so partial refund or payment to be made, or use that as reasoning to waive.

        I guess YMMV

        • +2

The phone has nothing to do with the plan. It's a SIM only plan. The chat people on the Optus website don't even know you got a Pixel.

          • @BradH13: So that's the reason people cancel before phone arrive. But arguably you should still have the plan before phone arrives, in case you need to chase Optus or HN. That is a personal choice I think

            • +1

@neonlight: I was a 'car park canceller' on Monday and got my phone no issues on Thursday, without any added charges. :)

            • @neonlight: Having the plan still won’t make any difference, as said Optus have nothing to do with the phone. Harvey give you the invoice with the phone on it so if you need to chase them that’s all you need.

      • +1

I tried that yesterday, couldn't do it. Gave up and took the extra cost.

    • -1

You need to pay the bill before/on its due date, no matter what. The phone has nothing to do with the plan, technically.

Once the bill is issued, it's issued. You have to pay it. Your termination fee will decrease by $34.50 once paid.

There's no getting around paying the $69 if they've issued it.

      • Yup makes sense. I will just consider $34.50 as insurance to have the phone delivered while still being their customer.

Sounds like I will have to pay it but the phone is not yet arrived and bill is not due yet there's no reason to do so.

However should I let it lapse if the porting is done before due date?

    • I had my put on hold for a month.
Hoping I can just port out without having to reactivate it first.

      • Putting on hold for month? How do you do that? You mean you are trying to delay the first payment until phone arrives? Not sure how Optus allow that to happen as the service is already activated

        • There's a $5.50/mth fee for pausing but I got it waived as it's outside of my control.

  • confirmed with HV blacktown , aside from the JB HIFI deal are there any other good deals out there ?

  • +6

This deal had been cancelled. At HN now and sales rep is saying Optus has cancelled it early because of all of the cancellations

    • -5

They should have just made the cancellation payout the remaining months x $69 instead of halving it.

I still would have signed up as it's still a good deal.

Hopefully next time they do that

      • +1

Lol how would RRP be a good deal?

        • +3

How is $1656 for a $1699 phone and 24 months of 100GB 5G phone plan RRP?

Show me anywhere else you can get that

I think a lot of cancellers didn't do the maths

          • +8

@chromium: Or cancellers wanted a half-price phone and already had a plan they were happy with so had no reason to stay.

Y'know, that could be it too.

            • +1

@dongltron: Oh absolutely some did the maths, but I think many didn't :)

              • @chromium: Eh. Fair enough.

                • +1

@dongltron: Some are talking like an $828 Pixel 8 Pro plus a $34.5/month 100GB 5G phone plan is the worst deal in the world

                  • +2

@chromium: Meh. Why would I keep a $34.5pm Optus phone plan when my Amaysim plan costs $9pm with 10gb data and unlimited calls & text.

                    • @mandelbrot: Agree with you @chromium. 10GB isn't suitable for everyone however I'm also for everyone finding the best deal possible.

My phone is also a hotspot (for remote work) so this works out best for me. Plus I got a great discount for 13mnths, so I'm happy. Just waiting on the phone to arrive!

                    • +1

@mandelbrot: I've found Amaysim and all other Optus MVNOs default to 4G band 40 whenever it's available.

This often results in horrible upload speeds and very sluggish online experience, meanwhile full Optus customers will use band 1, 3 and 28 mostly and it will fly.

Some might be lucky in certain areas so YMMV

          • @chromium: Yeah but some people don't need that data so the math is better if you cancel

            829+150 for a yearly sim<1656
            829-12*boost sim cashwards cashback profit<1656

            • @denserham: Sure, but this plan + phone is far from RRP

              • +4

@chromium: Yeah i'm glad you found value in the plan.

You said cancellers haven't done the maths, but they have and it works out better for them. I never mentioned RRP.

I think cancelling is better value I haven't spent more than $150 a year for a phone plan and having a postpaid plan is a drag i would rather have the extra $520 over two years than 100gb a month i don't use.

      • +6

No thanks this phone by itself isn't worth the 1.7k asking price. True price would be around 1k if not a bit less.

        • +2

No but if you count the phone as being worth $828 then you are only paying $34.50 a month for 24 months for a 100GB 5G phone plan, which is pretty good imho

          • +4

@chromium: I'm currently on a Boost 12 month prepaid sim with 140GB for $200. Most of my data comes over wifi, so my phone data use is quite minimal and I'd be lucky to use half of it. For me, that works out at less than $12 per month, so switching to Optus for worse coverage (I have 5G with Boost but not Optus in my area) and even more data I don't need, made canceling for my use case a no-brainer.

        • -2

I cancelled my contract for 828 by porting over to belong straight away for $29 a month. Sold the phone the next day for 1250.
So its worth over 1k mate.

      • @chromium You can't change a contract CIS after the fact.

  • +2

Ok this is really weird. Is the Ozbargain app not working for anyone else on the pixel 8 pro?

    • +1

Isn't it an ancient app that hasn't been updated in 3 years? Maybe it doesn't work with Android 14

      • +1

I don't really see why it shouldn't… Only thing I could think is maybe it still runs on 32 bit which Pixel doesn't support since 7, but it runs fine on mine. Not sure where the incompatibility lies…

        • +1

I've never even used the app before, any good over just using the website?

        • I'm running it on an S20u Android 13 and from what I can tell this phone doesn't support 32bit apps.

          • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the Pixel 7 was the first Android phone ever to not support 32-bit apps.

            • @dongltron: I think you might be right, I can't find any good info on Android 13 or S20u refusing 32bit apps.
Damn these bastards why diaable 32bit on 64bit systems, PC's for decades have been backwards compatible with 16/32bit, 32/64bit.

I remember setting up a virtual winXP on a 64bit system to access a 16bit database.

              • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Windows (and affiliated Microsoft companies) prides itself on backwards compatibility. That's why they exist. To Apple, Samsung, Google, etc. this isn't as important. Though the removal of 32bit support isn't a huge loss as any app updated in the past 5 years should be 64bit. 64 bit support on the 7 and 8 can actually be re-enabled with just a few commands though. The chip is fully capable of it, they just disabled it by default for reasons I can't begin to understand.

    • I had the same issue. It's not compatible with A14. I now have a shortcut to the web page on my home screen. Looks just like the app as it is a mobile version.

    • Works on mine

    • Same, doesn't work for me either

  • +4

This sucks. Didn't have time until the weekend to sign up and genuinely wanted to stay on the plan.

I guess holding onto the pixel 5 for another year or two will help me save a bit as it is still a decent phone.

  • +1

Damn that’s so annoying I went to HN on Thursday and the system was down. I genuinely wanted to stay on the plan too. Just went in and it was cancelled.

  • How long did it take you guys to get your final bill after cancelling the plan?

    • I havent recieved mine yet and i cancelled straight away. I think its usually 2 weeks before its due so probably like 15 days after, thats if you cancelled straight away

    • Selling on FB marketplace sounds like quite lucky you didn't get scammers

      • -1

I had about 10 people message me. Most were time wasters. Then some guy who was genuine buyer agreed to my asking price of 1250 and came and collected it. I was also the only person selling the porcelain colour. Moat people are selling obsidian and bay

    • +3

      $828 (cancellation) + $840 (35pm for 24 months) = $1668

      Staying on Optus $69pm for 24 months = $1656

You could have saved more by staying with the plan lol

      • -7

I sold the phone for 1250
        1250-828 = 422
        35 x 24 = 840
        840 - 422 = 418
        418 ÷ 24 = 17.41
So thats 17.41 per month over 24 months
What's even better I'm not locked in to this
I didn't need the plan or the phone. I knew I'd make at least 400 off this which I made 422

  • Out of curiosity, not trying to get technical or anything but wouldnt them ending the deal early be some sort of false advertising considering in the T&C, it had stated that it ends on the 19th ?

    • +1

Usually there's a condition that "ends 19/10/23 unless offer removed early/stock exhausted"

They've changed the website since the deal finished but as an example the current screen says.

      Plan name
      Harvey Norman gift card value
$49 24 month SIM Only plan $100 Available until withdrawn
$69 24 month SIM Only plan $500 Available until withdrawn
$99 24 month SIM Only plan $1200 Available until 10/10/23

      https://www.harveynorman.com.au/optus-byo#sectionVoiceSixtyF…

      • +1

ah okay, they've withdrawn the $69 pixel deal and now added the 'Available until Withdraw'

        • +1

Yep, I think they learnt their lesson and changed a few terms of existing ones haha

        • +2

Looks like ozb is done with HN forever regarding cheap mobile phone plans.

Optus will never do a deal like this again lmao

  • At the moment I'm tossing up whether to cancel or not.

Currently with Felix for $35 per month
    - don't need home internet as I hotspot to everything in apartment
    - am right near a tower so get constant good data speed & never experienced problems anywhere else i go
    - use about >200gb p/m
    - I enjoy the flexibility of knowing I can use as much data that I need as things change eg: visitors using hotspot

I'll see if I can get Optus to offer/match a similar plan. But other than accessing 5g speed which isn't anything needed for my usage. There's not really much of a reason to change.

    Any thoughts?

    • if your usage was on 4g, now that u on 5g i can only imagine u will use the quota even quicker

      • Yeah that's what I'm thinking as well.
        For me 4G is fine.

I only use my phone, macbook, sometimes fire TV Stick - I don't watch TV. It's not even plugged in. It's been like that for 6+ months haha

I'm not a gamer & even don't have a subscription to any steaming services apart from Amazon.

I'll probably stick with Felix but will see if I can get optus to reduce the price & give the new service a try.

    • If you're currently paying $35 a month then it's cheaper to stay with Optus. Optus works out to $34.50/month if you subtract $828 for the cost of the phone.
You want them to give you a free phone and a $35/month plan? Good luck!

        • Ah yeah, that makes sense. So staying with Optus is slightly cheaper, but you won't get as much data. Thanks for the clarification :)

I didn't realise there were unlimited plans. Never heard of Felix, any good? What network do they use?

100GB is massive overkill for me, so no idea why I'm asking about unlimited plans :D
