  • How much was this before

"Was $49.50 as Per Price Hipster" (title)

      • +3

yeah that was updated after the question.

I wonder which one is better, aldi or bunnings.

  • edger

  • In for one!

  • +6

I bought one of these a while back. Goes alright, but because it doesn't really remove any material like most powered options do (just pushes in and cuts), you'll be going back more often than you would using something powered. Would still be a handy tool for a tiny yard though.

It would also work a treat if you needed to cut a new edge for a garden or something… but so would a shovel.

    • +4

I was gonna say how is this better than a straight edged shovel

      • +7

Being round, it's easier to push then the entire width of a shovel or spade. Also it has tooth, you can rock it side to side.

But if you have loose soil, appropriately sized shovel or spade will work fine.

        • Yeah, its works really great for clay soil, which if you use shovel it gets right back at you, I learned after sometime that its better to cut the clay than digging :)

        • it's easier to push then the entire width of a shovel or spade

What if you insert your shovel on an angle?

          • @1st-Amendment: Then you can't use your body weight to push it down.

I have seen videos of people using spade at an angle in place of edger, they all have loose soil.

Ask them to remake the videos on clay soil, see how they go.

    • I have the Ozito motorised edger and it basically just pushes in and cuts. Still need to whack away at it with a shovel later to knock the grass out. Should have got the Ryobi edger, or just a whipper snipper.

      • +2

I have that ozito edger. How is the Ryobi one better?

I can see how it doesn't necessarily move the dirt out but it does loosen it. I use a blower to clear the new cavity created. In my experience, on not particularly thick grass, it also trims it at the same time. The biggest benefit is that it can be rested on the wheel and therefore does not require the same level of concentration and strength as a whipper snipper which you need to suspend and walk very carefully to cut clean lines.

      • I think they are all like that the first time you use them. Some of the grass will be attached to the concrete strip (assuming you have concrete borders) and need to be shoveled up. They do create a nice clean line though and are better after the second cut onwards.
I have the Ozito PXC one and its powerful enough for the job and seems solidly built.
I can't really see how the Ryobi would be massively different or better

Hmmm maybe I should try edging more. I shouldn't even be doing it in the first place, the owner of the house's son was meant to be doing it while he's away. I wish I could afford to just move out of here.

Nothing like some good old fashioned edging

Actually paid $49.50 a couple of weeks ago, it will be going back, just ordered another.

    • -3

      What excuse will you give?

      • +4

        You give an excuse?

        • -3

If I'm going to break the law, I'm not gonna have an issue lying about it.

          • @Ulysses31: What law?

            • -1

@Simon Wright: Fraud/obtain benefit by deception.

              • +1

@Ulysses31: What deception? Bunnings explicitly permits change of mind returns. Someone can change their mind that it was worth $49.50 and that's perfectly within the bounds of the law and Bunnings' returns policy.

  • So what is their profit margin.
Even at this price thay are making a profit.

    • +1

For such a simple tool and bunning's buying power, there's still profit in this for sure.

    • +2

Even at this price thay are making a profit.

      How do you know?
      Loss leaders are a thing.

    • +1

these are worth $10 max, $50 is a joke

    • they make profit on other shite

this ruse is just to increase floor traffic. more floor traffic, more sales. that's the way it works

naturally not everyone flocking in for this fancy apocalypse weapon will buy anything else, but there's a chance

  • Just bought one as I am doing some work on my lawn. Thanks.

  • +9

I'm waiting for the full moon version.

    • +1

this made my day mait! XD

  • +1

I have one with whell mechanism: totally useless without enough pressure to cut the weed roots.

    • Makes sense, went to local Bunnings only couple half moon left compared to a stacked wheel type shelf.

  • +6

    I follow this - https://youtu.be/5QI9bEVpKt4?si=goDzIzVn-CkP8SKJ

At least with a spade shovel you can dual use for other garden chores.

    • +1

100% agree. We bought this edger and were pretty disappointed with it. We have what I'd call regular soil, maybe even a tad on the sandy side. We also have buffalo grass and really, our shovel does a better job than this edger (& we're pretty full-on when we do any digging/trimming).

  • Love a low tech bargain

  • +1

Bought one this morning, used it already, works like a treat. $20 well spent. I am a happy man. :)

  • +2

This one is sharp and does the job, incl. buffalo, etc.

    11" OOS but 7.8" is $11.19.

  • Bunnings showed stock at box hill and Nunawading. Went there sold out at both. This is harder to get than the Cole’s gift card fml already on the deal with petrol wasted.

  • +1

It's oos everywhere. I've placed many delivery orders and all got cancelled. One pass delivery is not helping here.

  • What's the difference between this and a whipper snipper? Neater cut?

    • +1

You would use this edger to create a garden bed, i.e. cutting into the lawn to create shape lines. It's not for trimming lawn edges.

      • Ah ok. Definitely do not need. Thanks

  • Thanks OP. was planning on getting one of these at full price next weekend.

  • Seems to have gone out of stock. Bunnings chat support said it has been removed from the website due to stock issues. No ETA on restocking.

  • Expired, back to full price.
