Phone Was Just Stolen, Decided I Will Try out Samsungs Instead of iPhones. Need Your Opinions Please

I'm looking at some Samsung phones, was curious about the A54, S22 and S23/23+ and would like some opinions. I heard about prime day and that it would be best to wait for the deals listed there for price matches. Need your opinions if I should make the switch or just get another iPhone.

Thank you.

Need your opinions if I should make the switch or just get another iPhone.

Give me a few moments while I try to read your mind to understand what's important for you…… lol

    • Well, after using 120hz for awhile, that is definitely important.
I like a good camera but it doesn't have to the be the best of the best… I just take a casual pic or gym pics.
I usually just got iPhones cause everyone had them, and they were more "stylish" so to say, but now that i've matured i've been thinking about Samsungs.
The MOST important is that the phone lasts me 4+ years and the battery is also good.

      • +4

The MOST important is that the phone lasts me 4+ years and the battery is also good.

Almost any phone will last you much more than 4 years, it's a matter of when you want to "upgrade". You could buy a cheapo second hand phone and still get 4 years out of it.

        • +2

Agreed except the battery part - generally the battery degrades after say 2 years for me. No phone truly ever lasts 4 years for me WITHOUT at least a battery replacement.

          • @Ramrunner: Yes, I agree. Husband just replaced battery in nearly 3 years old iPhone (at Apple Store). This will extend its life and performance for another 2/3 years hopefully (and I think iPhone 12 will stop at iOS 20). By then we will probably upgrade.

          • @Ramrunner: my Samsung S10 battery is going strong even after 5+ yrs now. i didn't expect it to last this long either but 2 yrs sounds bit too low for any device.

            • +4

@ameyas7: S10 was released early 2019. How come youve been using it for 5+ years?

              • @Foosa: my bad. you are right. it was indeed this june 19 vivid deal so around 4.25 yrs now but still pretty happy with overall performance including battery life. with wireless charging, usb port(s) in car it does get easier to keep it afloat most of the times even on day trips etc so haven't really tested how many hours it can go on single charge explicitly but haven't experienced any noticeable drops or day-to-day inconvenience with its battery life. if it wasn't for the broken screen (dropped face down on concrete so can't complain), i may not be willing to upgrade for another 1-2 yrs. but if there's a good deal on S23 ultra 512gb, i won't hesitate to switch over.

                • +1

@ameyas7: Yeah my S10 is still going hard, it has been a good phone

              • @Foosa: Looks like I can go 7 am - 2pm with typical usage and still have 24% battery left. If I enable power saving mode now, it's showing another 9 hrs of estimated uptime (with minimal usage of course) which I think is pretty good after 4+ yrs.

          • +1

@Ramrunner: If battery is important I would check when the new European laws come in, which requires replaceable batteries. (It's far easier and cheaper to swap a battery designed to clip in/out.) If it's soon, buy something cheap, secondhand even, to get you by. If it's too far away, ignore, and buy better now.

          • @Ramrunner: My OnePlus 5t is going perfectly without any service for 4+ years now.
What are you talking about??? 2 years

          • @Ramrunner: I dunno how but my wife manages to keep them for 4 years no worries

        • Does OP realise that android and iphone have totally different operating systems????
That is far more important than the things OP thinks are important.
As ssfps above says, any phone meets OPs criteria.

I moved from (Samsung) Android to iPhone 4 years ago.
Didnt take long to adjust to the iOS system

This year I tried to go back to Android and became very frustated.
          So stayed with iPhone.

I suggest that OP gets a cheap or 2nd hand Samsung android phone and try it out before going all out on a new Samsung android phone.
And there are plenty of professional reviews online for almost every Samsung model covering every aspect.

Alternatively if OP doesnt want to fork out for a new Flagship iPhone then go for the iPhone SE3 (2022)
Its an excellent iPhone with great camera running exactly the same iOS as the iphone 14/15 but only for about $600 new

        • An exynos samsung will not last you 4+ years, My note 9 did not even last me 2. My Z fold 3 which has the snapdragon is now lasting over 2 years from launch.

          • @jerjergege: I don't think you can simply generalise it. I believe my S10 galaxy has exynos and still going strong at 4+ yrs now. but ye YMMV.

          • @jerjergege: The Exynos that had issues no longer exists. With the s21 series Samsung binned their Exynos design and adopted the design of the equivalent Snapdragon

Compare the Exynos 2100 to the equivalent Snapdragon 888

            https://www.anandtech.com/show/16463/snapdragon-888-vs-exyno…

The CPUs are practically identical, the Snapdragon is better here because they included more cache. The real difference is the GPU.

With a modern phone like the S23 there would be no practical difference between the two when looking at battery life

            • @greatlamp: That's just what's on paper, but actual usage in the real world seems to speak differently, especially in screen on time, even on the S22 line Exynos vs Snapdragon, you would get more than double the SOT.

Snapdragon SOT 8+ hours, uptime 24+ hours.
Exynos 3 hours, uptime 15 hours.

You will be able to see user complaints everywhere on thew samsung forumns.

      It's the bait 🪤

    • Same, if it was an iPhone, he could use the “find my” app to track it and lock it out?

  • Also something on the cheaper end would be nice. I am aware samsung like to do good deals so. I am happy to be phoneless for a bit.

    • +4

How will you take those gym pics without a phone?

      • it's those "casual" pic OP is really going to miss

Take a look at the newly released Pixels, both 120hz and with longer support than Samsung:

Pixel 8 and 8 Pro will get updates for at least 7 years.

7a is better value but has 90Hz display.

      • +18

Pixels and Samsung use Android as it's OS.
They just have different default apps installed (see: bloatware)

Pixels are best known for their great cameras and long term support.
Samsung's are known for being flagship but haven't really innovated much in the past few years (feel free to correct me)

Worth noting that Google and Samsung aren't the only Android phone manufacturers. Plenty of them out there - some better, some worse.

      • +13

Samsung uses android mate, the same as the pixel lines, except Samsung adds their own bloatware over the top

      • +1

        Android

      • +3

Just about all non-Apple smartphones use Android OS, which is made by Google.
Pixels are designed by Google too.
So Google Pixels use "pure" Android.

      • +8

Google OS right? Not sure if I want to give that a go…

        Grabs popcorn🍿

    • Id even recommend (depending on OP how much prepared to pay) might be able to score a Cheap Pixel 7 Pro, I have one and its brill.

  • iPhone 15 pro max brah

    Phone Was Just Stolen

And your first thought is to post on a bargaining website about switching to Samsung?

Why not try and get your phone back?

    What phone did you have?

    • +2

I've done everything I could. Unfortunately the phone is switched off so it cannot be tracked. It's been 5 days. I don't want to be without a phone for too long

      • -1

Also something on the cheaper end would be nice. I am aware samsung like to do good deals so. I am happy to be phoneless for a bit.

        8 minutes later.

I've done everything I could. Unfortunately the phone is switched off so it cannot be tracked. It's been 5 days. I don't want to be without a phone for too long

        • +2

No contradiction there. "I'm happy to wait for the bus for a bit.." "Oh well I've been standing here for two weeks, no bus has come, I better get a taxi before I starve."

          • @[Deactivated]: No standing for two weeks. Literally 8 minutes later

            • @munecito: Where's the contradiction?

"For a bit" is a shorter time period than "for too long".

              • @OZKap: The contradiction is in the context.

Op is talking about Samsung doing specials. You have to wait for those specials. It isn't like there's one running every week.

So op is happy to wait for those over the already lapsed 5 days.

But then 8 minutes later op states that he doesn't want to be without a phone for too long.

      • +1

iPhone can still be tracked when off, unless you stupidly turned that feature off.

  • +6

The "A" series Samsungs is a budget line. If you're coming from a new iPhone/flagship phone, you may hate the downgrade.

    • +1

      I see, so I'm better off with a S22/S23?

      • +2

I would suggest those 2 over the A-series, unless it's out of your budget. It depends on how you use your phone though.
I've known people who've gone from iPhone to Android and vice versa, and hated the change because everything was so different. If you've never used Android before, try out the demos instore first.

        • Not sure now but i tried the a series and wasnt happy back then (6 years ago)

      • Not sure how you want us to make suggestions, when you've given us zero context on your use-case.

        Here is one shortlist:
        - Samsung xCover 6 Pro (User Removable Battery)
        - Samsung A52-S (great, cheap, 2021 model)
        - Samsung S23+ (2023 flagship)
        - Samsung S23U (as above, with S-Pen)
        - Sony 1 mk V (awesome, no local warranty)
        - Xiaomi Poco F5 (semi-flagship, best value)
        - Fairphone 5 (environmentally friendly)

  • Just wondering if you'd like some advice on what you're having for dinner as well.

  • +8

If you do get a Samsung, go for the Qualcomm Snapdragon powered S23 series rather than the inferior Exynos models found on the A-series and earlier S-series. The Snapdragon processors have better power efficiency (battery will have better endurance).

My S23 Plus with a 4500mah battery outlasts my old Galaxy S21 Ultra with 5000mah battery.

  • +3

If you phone current phone was iPhone, buy a another.
    /thread

      • +8

If you've already made up your mind, then why did you post?

      • Exactly, that's my point. Stop wasting ppls time and go by your iphone, no hard feelings. Which one ? One that you offered.😆

  • How about a Samsung Fold5? I’m in the Apple ecosystem but the Fold5 is bloody awesome.

  • A34 > A54

  • What do people do with stolen iPhones? I figure most handsets will be bricked (and have little resale value) due to iCloud lock and passcode lock.

  • +4

Why not oppo, oneplus, vivo etc.
Samsung is terrible with after sales support

please search for the threads on here bout them blaming customer for the issues

  • +2

I wouldn’t pay the Samsung tax and abandoned bloatware. Get a google pixel phone or any of the clean google1 phones like Motorola or Nokia. You don’t need to go Chinese mb. Don’t pay too much, budget $350 and look for the best specs for the money.

    G50 $200
    G53 $275
    G83 $350

  • +1

The S23/S23+ are great phones. Excellent screen, long battery life, 4 years OS updates and feels great in the hand.

The only downside you may find is the shutter lag on the camera. It's noticeable compared to the Pixel series and iPhones. You can adjust the shutter speed between quality, standard and speed, but even on prioritise speed setting it will fail on high motion shots. The video quality is very good though.

  • +3

I switched from Iphone (it was work phone) to Samsung (cheap on a family plan) now have a Pixel 7 - very happy with the Pixel - will stick with Pixel. At first I regretted switching from Iphone just because it is such a big change - really pleased I did now - so much cheaper and Pixel 7 does everything I need.

  • -1

All "iStuff" is just expensive for what you get, plus then you are locked into Apple. If you go Android, it doesn’t really matter what brand of phone you get. I changed over a decade ago, yet Andriod was just starting out and Apple was better, but now it's the other way around. I bought a Andriod phone (can't remember what brand) and returned it that day as the battery didn't even last 6 hours.

But later Samsung started bringing out smart phones from Nokia, and I've been with Samsung ever since, not that you need to listen to me. Google for the last few years have entered the phone market with smart watches.

I've heard things about Oppo phones are linked back to China, but don't know how much that’s true, I personally wouldn't own Oppo but that’s my opinion, and yours would be different.

I've owned my first Apple phone since they came out, then switched to Samsung and been with Samsung phones (S?, Note 4, S9+, now S22U), but that’s just me, and wait for JB HiFi to have a great gift card sale for signing up to Telstra plan for 12/24 months.

  • i suggest you become more responsible and stop losing your crap. then buy another iPhone. samsung sucks. i attempted what you are doing, and went back to iPhone. sucks too because samsung doesn't hold there value very well and sold at a loss to just to get rid of it.

    • Why not keep both? Both have their merits and handy for everyday situations (recent to latest models). I keep both Samsung and iPhone.

  • Samsung support far worse than apple support.
Android is completely different to apple operating system.
Android phones often not upgradeable and you'll only get a few years before apps cease to work, longer with apple.
The only person I know outside of ozbargain who likes samsung simply keeps replacing his phone so he knows easily how to use the new one.

  • -8

Android is a garbage OS, don’t bother

    • +1

Is it its customisations, increased options and user-oriented experiences that you dislike?

      • +2

Likely the lack of long term support, buggy features, and slow performance.

Fwiw, this has been my experience. Owned a Galaxy, lasted a year before i begun to get call issues.
Mrs had gone through 4 phones with various bugs and slow downs from dropped calls, robotic sounding call quality, consistent crashing apps, randomly turning off. Maybe we have just had a bad run with samsung devices…

I used to enjoy the freedom of options on a phone. Now I would just rather one which continues to function as a phone, and continues to be supported long term.

  • But an iPhone 15 (non pro) - Purchase the Apple care Plus with theft and loss, pay monthly for it. Furthermore, apple iPhones are findable when they are off.

    • Better off adding your phone to your building contents insurance if you can - covering 2 x new flagship phones jacked my premium up $5 per year with nil excess on claims.

  • +1

My Pixel 7 is great, get that or check out the 8.

  • +1

    Pixel are great

  • Apparently the Samsung A53 is the killer mid range spec. Don't bother with 54 but yeah availability is the key.

Go for a pixel, decent specs, good to great cameras and OS updates for a while to come.

Why not just send all your personal info to the CCP whilst you’re at it?

      • best go offgrid then

      • They probably have half of your “oh so useful data” from all the hacks Australia got.

  • +6

The Apple cult is very strong on ozbargain, then again around the world too. Talking to them is like talking to a brick wall

    • I’m an Apple guy but I don’t understand why so many comments are trying to push OP in buying another iPhone instead of giving them the advice they actually asked for!

  • +1

I have been using Samsung S10+ for 4 years now and still happy about it with good battery condition.

The camera maybe already outdated with 2023 smartphones.

BTW did you know about Samsung Dex?
My phone can turn into a laptop. Dont know if this matters to you but iphone couldn't do this till now.

Main reason I moved to Android. I am using Google products mostly and I believe majority are the same. Gmail, Google Map, YouTube, Chrome, GDrive, Google Home, etc.

Recently moved from Android to Apple
Honestly don't really miss anything, i thought I'd miss having a back button on the bottom
Having airdrop really helps my missus since i take the photos

  • get iphone 15 base, its cheap and great all round. dont listen to android fanboys, i was one for 10 years, first time i got the iphone i hated it so much for the firs 3 months i regretted my decision. after 3 months it started to grow on me, now i could never go back to samsung its so much better the iphone in every way. they will never know until they try it out for 3+ months, its such a polished experience all-round that no Samsung can compare to it.

    • +1

      its cheap

I guess for some people $1400 for a phone is cheap.

      • 1500 and yeh its the cheapest one in the 15 lineup,

  • +3

I find that android has slightly more freedom and flexibility, but man that buttery smooth iOS experience of scrolling the home screen just wins me over every time.

Its like iOS is the hot girl with a shit personality but the Android is the fat ugly girl with the best personality. Everyone says its always personality that matters, but man the sex with hot girl is so much better.

  • I've been using iPhone, pixel and Samsung over the past 5 years. I prefer Android not being locked down, often use it for retro emulators and torrenting.
As for Android flavours I love pixel. Very pretty implementation of Android and well thought out, feels like I'm never more than 2 taps away from what I want to do, which isn't the case on Samsung's oneui or ios.
My ecosystem is all apple (macbook, ipad, airpods) but don't feel I'm missing out on much combining it with an Android phone

  • If you have only ever have had iphone I think you will find it annoying going to samsung. I did but never know until you try

  • As far as Im aware, now a days most phone choices are perfectly fine choices, like its very hard to get a phone and just hate it. But I've always been a samsung phone person. Android just allows for more freedom, and I really only use my phone for texting, memes and netflix. So i really dont use my phone intensively. You just cant realistically go wrong with either going Apple or Samsung.

Although I do admit, i didnt like the idea of apple selling other stuff for much higher prices, like the wheels for your computer? I know i wont buy them, but 1000 for 4 wheels? nah thats a level of consumerism that I will never be at.

  • I'd actually consult MKBHD before coming OzBargain

    • he reckon 120hz is must for Android but with iPhone you can get away with 60hz screen.
